Classic FPS Remastered: Lost Planet 2 (Patreon)
Content
Let's go back once again, this time to June 2010, where our journey through the DF archives brings us to Lost Planet 2, using a revised version of Capcom's MT Framework - a technology that performed well enough on Xbox 360 but - once again - had profound issues on PlayStation 3.
Capcom seems to have achieved close parity in terms of art, texture detail and features but it looks like MSAA (remember that?) gets pulled back to 2x on Xbox 360, while the older quincunx implementation on PlayStation 5 is removed completely here, giving a very raw look. By 2010, the generation was in full swing, but clearly even the most talented developers were having issues.
This is born out by the performance level - far from a locked 30fps on Xbox 360 (Capcom uses the double-buffered 'lock to 30, tear beneath' formula we saw throughout the generation) while PS3 get a triple-buffered v-sync approach which did nothing to address some pretty fundamental performance problems.
These days it's rare to find tremendous performance differences between platforms. Shifting resolution targets and dynamic resolution scaling paper over any cracks quite effectively. Back in the day though? A completely different story...
