Hello everyone! The week flies by fast, and that means we are already prepping a brand new DF Direct Weekly! But to finish this delicious cake, we need the most important ingredient, your questions! This week, Rich, John and Audi will discuss a bit more Switch OLED, we'll talk about Assassin's Creed Infinity, TIE Fighter Total Conversion and more.

Leave us your comments and questions in the comments field and see you on Saturday!

@Rich : You don't seem to be such a retro enthusiast. What's your personal take on retrogaming?

Bryan McIntosh

Is there any interest in doing a DF Retro on 3D positional game sound cards of the 90s, specifically the Aureal A3D and Sound Blaster Live! series of sound cards? I think it would be a neat comparison to listen to, especially with era-appropriate games and hardware.

Do you guys think OLED screen in a Switch will be pentile matrix and how much would it affect picture clarity with such a low resolution and PPI compared to phones?

Art Vandelay

Hey DF! You often mention the "VRR window" and, while I understand the concept, a few questions remain: is this part of the HDMI 2.1 spec? And if so, what are the min and max values? In addition, can it vary from TV model to TV model? And finally, what would you consider to be optimal values?

Thermopyle

Will you be looking at the Plague Tale current-gen update? Alex's original version coverage back in 2019 is what prompted me to play the pretty fantastic game (tied with Greedfall for my favorites of the year, which also got a current-gen and DLC release within the past week, but that sadly never got DF coverage.) I'm pretty curious about your thoughts on the updates, and whether those updates lend themselves to any expectations for next year's sequel Requiem.

Following on from the announcement of the OLED Switch, when a true successor comes out, will it even need to be significantly more powerful if it has DLSS? Could games already feature higher level visuals by lowering the resolution to save gpu time allowing for higher graphics settings, then using DLSS to upsample to a higher resolution than current Switch games?

Hugh Franck

With the abundance of Wii U ports to the Switch why haven’t we seen 3DS conversions with higher resolutions and better performance? Differences in system architectures? Popularity of 3DS compared to Wii U? Price gap of original software - $40 vs $60?

Jonas Taghizadeh (Taggen86)

Why does the switch not provide 4k upscaling and HDR given that the tegra SOC supports it?

Hello DF! If it’s been more or less “free” for modern GPUs to hit 16x AF for many years now, why do you think so many console games across all generations are continuing to use 4x or 8x? And even if it did have a bigger performance cost, wouldn't the visual benefit still outweigh, say, slightly better shadows or LODs, given how many games have environments that turn to soup just a few feet away from the player's perspective?

Kjell Bjørvik

Hello DF. Is it posible to have ray traced shadow only on the main caracter? When i checked out the Shredders trailer and gameplay i looked like the snowboard was hovering a little and i think this could be fixed with ray traced shadow. But if the budget is to big, maybe they can focus on just the main charakter.

Some rumours have stated that this rumoured Switch Pro will use a customised Tegra Orin SoC. Looking at the specs released so far of that chipset, it would be a massive upgrade. Do you guys personally think a Switch Pro would use that chipset, or would Nintendo reserve that for its actual next generation of hardware? The Nintendo playbook is often to repurpose old tech in innovative ways, not use the latest and greatest internals available to them. It doesn't seem like they would need Orin-level performance to get Switch games to a standard that leveraged DLSS well for its current generation. I would love it, but let's be honest, the Tegra X1 was already 2 or 3 years old when the Switch came out... What would realistically be used for a potential Switch Pro upgrade?

Leo S. Luna

Greetings DF team. Do you consider the Switch Oled as a safer move than releasing the rumored "Pro version"? I somehow feel that pro version is going to complicate things for developers considering they have to build new versions of their games or probably leave a handful of games only available on a Pro version, just how it happened with New 3ds xl and Xenoblade Chronicles. Plus, I don't see Nintendo doubling costs on pandemic times for a pro version, but maybe an oled could feel safer.

The 40fps patch on R&C is a great middle ground for me to play in. Many performance modes of games lose a lot of visual fidelity, and depending on where those cuts are made, really bother me. In R&C for example, the particle effects are very pixelated. In Control UE, the SSR creates a lot of weird motion on surfaces. Way back, I couldn't watch rear projections with a color wheel because I would see rainbows every time my eyes shifted. All this is to ask: what visual anomalies or performance-motivated fidelity cuts, are you sensitive to that can break your immersion in media? Cheers!

Hello Gentlemen, with most of the big developers/publishers moving towards service based model, What do you see in the future for "closed" single player and co-op games? With Nintendo sticking to Mario and Zelda, do you see Sony being the only platform focusing on these with new innovations/storylines etc.? Also how does this shift to service based games impact Retro Gaming in let's say next 10-20 years? From preservation to re-playability perspective. Also btw. Its pronounced Neon Vee ;)

Working on games as you do, you’re often forced to look at games you might have otherwise passed up, sometimes having to look at them multiple times over. Are there any games, particularly frequently released ones, that you feel you would have loved if you’d been able to leave that series alone for a few games prior? For example, would Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey have been less of a slog if you hadn’t played since Brotherhood? From Cliptacular

Dylan

That was my exact trajectory for AC. I imagine I wouldn't have finished Odyssey had I been keeping up with the series.

What game / franchise that pushed tech for its time do you guys want to see brought to the modern day?

Hello from Canada, i'm curious as to the backgrounds of both Audi and Alex. Both are excellent additions to DF and i am wondering what they were involved in before joining the team.

Pol Kallamata

If Nintendo were to make a generational shift to a Switch 2 in a couple of years, how capable do you think the handheld tech might be at that point compared to the current generation of consoles? Assuming Nintendo would follow a similar pricing model to the original Switch.

Oliver Mackenzie

One thing I noticed while playing Doom Eternal is that the RT reflections seem to be antialiased, unlike other games with RT reflections I’ve played. Is there anything special about Doom Eternal’s rendering that makes this possible? Or is it just a question of performance?

Robert F

Greetings all, regarding the Switch Oled announcement. We are aware of the chip shortage do you think this had any effect on the products release form? Do you think Nintendo is waiting on Nividia for newer silicone that has not yet been released for a larger upgrade, or is this product really just Nintendo as usual. This product release reminds me of the Russian politician Viktor Chernomyrdin who said "We wanted the best, but it turned out the same as always".

Liber McKee

You've hinted in the past that on your tour of Microsoft last year(or 2 years ago now time is weird now a days) you saw them doing some kind of resolution boosting to old games in a similar manner to how they are implementing FPS boost. Are you at liberty to discuss this and with the recent rumors of MC developing AI upscaling techniques do you think this is what you saw at that time? Do you think they will take an approach more similar to NVIDIA or AMD?

Jason Guffey

That Next (Current) Gen on CRT video was very cool. As someone who acquired an FW900 because of you guys, I'm curious if 120hz, even at 720p, is possible with the new systems on the FW900. Also curious how Richard was feeling about his CRT purchase now that some time has passed.

Question for John. After your in depth episode covering Quake, which was fantastic btw. Are there any other games that you’ve already covered that you’d like to revisit and give a similar treatment? Keep up the great work.

Dissecta

Given the almost supernatural performance of IDTech 7 compared to other engines in the current gen console versions of Doom Eternal, how likely is it that, given the theme of DOOM, ID made a deal with Satan to achieve this…?

Joe Esposito

America recently celebrated our annual gross Hot Dog Eating Contest. How many hot dogs could each of you eat in 10 minutes?

Eric Hurst

Why does it appear so much more complicated to port games from last gen to current gen on PS5 than on Xbox? Doom Eternal was a nightmare to get to PS5 with a totally new download that didn’t work at first and then didn’t carry over any saves. On Xbox, it was a simple patch to the game I already owned. What is Sony missing that would allow upgrades like this to be as simple as they are on Xbox? This is not the first game that has had a smoother update on Xbox (ie COD Warzone with the 120 Hz update).

Rip Van Winkle

What is your biggest pet peeves in terms of graphics tech? For example, for me it would have to be TAA that is overly blurry.

SweetMini

Aloha DF :) If you had a day in an imaginary arcade with every game that ever reached a location test available, all on Free Play, from vintage pre-pinball machines to the very latest arcade games, which games would you spend most of your time on ? If you don't have a specific names, which corner: pinballs, prize crane machines, pachinko, pachislot, dancing games, rythm games, shmups, racing games, brawlers, run and gun, "lightgun" games, VS fighters, etc) ? If you were given the option to greenlit a full body re-release alongside consoles and PC port of one of them, which one would it be ? I would love to release Marble Madness 2: Marble Man for example.

Sonicx9

With the Switch OLED model announced when do we expect a Switch successor?

Anonymous

Hi everyone. I hope you are doing well. Do you foresee Microsoft going back to increasing the resolution of some Xbox One games or do you believe they are solely focused on FPS boosts? Thank you

Lee Yarker

Hello DF. With the continued updates to DLSS and the performance and visual improvements that come with it, do you think hardware upgrades will become less and less necessary for future game releases? Or is DLSS' potential limited by current GPU and CPU performance?

Jay Fischetti

With all the resolution reconstruction, DLSS, checkerboard sampling, etc. going on, do you think there will be a point in the future where people "rediscover" native resolution? Or will running things at native res be the new retro?

digitalfoundry

This arrived too late for today's filming but it is a good question! Native resolution will always be the best presentation for certain applications and I'm pretty sure it will always be a thing in the PC space!

digitalfoundry

More performance is always a good thing - it's just that the power will be used on quality of pixels rather than quantity!

OnlyWeeklyShow

Same question as the post I wrote on the community section, do you guys feel that the mid-gen upgrade consoles (PS4 NEO and XBOX Scorpio) "spoiled the fun" of hyping up the new generation consoles?

Kris Graney

Hi all. With the release of the series X|S and PS5 Doom Eternal patch, I was hoping for RT on the series S. Alas, it was not to be. John and Rich state this is likely to do with the insufficient RAM of the series S. Do you expect this situation to persist for this generation with the Series S or can we expect some with games that were designed from the ground up to take advantage of RT on the Series S? Is the latter just a pipe dream because it's very unlikely to happen due to the Series S being a lesser selling console and therefore not worth the development investment and better to target X and PS5? Thank you!

Kris Graney

Hi Eric. I'd say it's down to where Sony focused their development, and didn't forsee this to being such an issue. Smart delivery is great, but maybe Sony decided to focus elsewhere rather than something that would (hopefully) only be required once.

How possible is it for DLSS 2.2 to be implemented in Cyberpunk 2077?
