Hello everyone! Wednesday is here and that means the boys are putting their pants on for another DF DIrect Weekly. Bit of a special week this week, Rich is out on secret assignment for his first travel in over a year. But no worries, DF Direct Weekly rolls on as usual. Leave your questions and comments below and we will pick a selection of them to answer for all to enjoy!

Why are Sony so reluctant to support 1440p resolutions?

Vasyl Baran

Do you think that GPU price/supply situation will come back to normal within the next 2 years? P.S. love your channel =)

Jonas Taghizadeh (Taggen86)

Considering that rt is included in all major game engines you would expect that most cutscenes that are not generated in real time to be path traced in games today. Is this the case? If not, why?

TransTechGirl

What games do you play in your own time and if you had to choose one game to play forever what would it be?

Sloth

Many of the reviews for the latest Super Monkey Ball mention that the older GameCube games still have the best controls of any platform. Is this a software issue or do you think the GameCube’s analogue stick design (e.g. flatter, wider stick with octagonal gate) offered more precision than those used on modern consoles? Would you like to see future consoles return to a GameCube-style analogue stick or do you think there were disadvantages to its design?

d0x360

Alex..could you quickly revisit DEATHLOOP on PC? using the new beta. It's the 3rd update to the game trying to fix bad frame pacing and the obvious stutter. If they don't do it after 3 tries, what's the issue? Why didn't it use UE4.. or even UE3.5? Thanks guys.

Hey guys. I’ve loved your content for years now and I can’t wait to see what you all come up with in the future. What are your thoughts on the consolidation of studios by major companies?

ShwaMiller

Howdy Team DF! It feels like it's been ages since AI in a game truly wowed or surprised me. You guys have spoken at length, many times, about the lackluster CPUs in PS4/XBone gen, and YouTuber Raycevick's Halo 4 Years Later video was pretty scathing on what he presumed were AI cut-backs in favour of pushing Xbox 360 to the limit. Now we have more CPU on the table than we have had for a while --and yes, it's of course awesome to see all these particles and gorgeous visuals -- have you seen any sign that another 'woah' moment in game AI is coming? In any capacity -- i.e. Left4Dead Director, enemies, friendlies, RTS units... And do you have a moment of interaction with game AI that you'll never forget?

Is Rich rich? And does Audi have and Audi?

OnlyWeeklyShow

Recently EA Sports spokeperson said FIFA 22's Machine-learning based animation technology is going to beacon to a future with massive ML application in games. You guys have been covering how machine learning improves image quality with lower resolution rendering (spell D.L.S.S.), but not much on ML actually becomes part of game itself. Which aspect do you think the application of ML will go to?

Luke

@John which brand are your speakers? Thanks!

Dubuc Nathan

Would it be possible, with FPS games or even TPS games to have your weapon, or your character, be rendered in a second pass, so that they do not occlude anything for the SSR ?

Allan Lindqvist

Reposting just because I'm curious: Why do you think so many games have frame pacing/frame rate cap issues? (Caps especially) Is there some non obvious technical difficulty or is it just not a priority for developers?

Anonymous

I've heard Audi mention he's a fan of fighting games before, is there any chance of a DF retro video covering them? Series like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat get a lot of coverage, so maybe it could focus on the not as well known games like the SF clones from the likes of Data East, less popular Neo Geo games like World Heroes and Savage Reign or perhaps early 3D games like Star Gladiator or Bloody Roar.

bjorktribe

After last weeks question picking revelation, and now that Rich is away; what questions would you pick to gaslight him to “return the favor”? Is he even gaslightable?

AGSMA

Question for Rich: could you imagine Digital Foundry as a whole exist in other formats 15 years ago, prior to YouTube's existence and reliability? Such as Eurogamer switching to or forming a video-centric website similar to GameTrailers, or even in TV channels like G4 (highly unlikely). Is it possible that DF's main focus could find an audience in the landscape of gaming journalism at that time.

The MGS HD Edition (MGS2/3) was just on sale in the Xbox store and I couldn't resist the $5 price tag after seeing you guys talk and cover MGS2 in past Retro content and more recently with the 4K E3 trailer uprez. With the rumors of Konami's MGS remakes just this past week, how well does the 360 port fare among the original PS2 release and the lackluster OG Xbox version? Is my money well spent??

Kevin Dickson

Hi Dfers, Since working on DF have any of you guys been approached by a Dev trying to headhunt you, and if you were to hypothetically move into development what studio would tickle your fancy and why? Kev Cheers!

Brian Anthony Seals

What are the visual similarities and differences between frame pacing issues and an unstable frame rate? Is it a situation where the trained eye can separate one from the other, or do you have to rely on your tool set to pry them apart?

Revenant

Theoretical Question: If you went back in time to the launch of the 32bit generation, and were going to write in one of the major gaming magazines, which would it be and why? Rich, you have to pick a different magazine than what you worked for at the time.

Bryan McIntosh

Is there a piece of retro hardware or software that you regret recycling/throwing away/giving away? What's your personal "one that got away?" I regret recycling an old 486 DX2/66 that had a Paradise VLB video card and an AWE64 that I should have salvaged, but I was moving out of the country and didn't have the foresight to keep those parts.

andre surles

Linus just did a tech piece on a dedicated AI graphics card. Could this be used in the future to power more DLSS type features in PC gaming?

Hi guys, I'm currently trying to get my hands on a CRT display to use primarily for modern consoles/PC. I live in the UK so all the TVs here are PAL but I have seen some that are capable of 100hz. Do you know if 60FPS content could even be displayed on a 100hz PAL display? I understand it wouldn't be perfect due to uneven frame persistence so am I better off avoiding PAL all together? (For reference the tv I saw with 100hz was a Toshiba 32” CRT TV 32ZP18Q) Thanks!

Matthew Santa Maria

This goes out to everyone in the comments also. Are there any big name games you've never finished? due to corruption or maybe an accidental save file delete? I'll start first. I've never beaten Banjo Kazooie because a friend's little brother deleted my save. I was towards the end and never went back. It was 9 year old me's first time experiencing exhaustion with a collectathon. I think about it everytime I see him, he doesn't even know. LOL

Matthew Santa Maria

If you could go back 25 years in the past, whats the 1 game you would show to people, so they can see how far we've leaped.

StrugglingShader

Question for Alex: Can you use DLSS to upscale the image from 6K (or 4K) to 8K and than use SSAA to downscale it back to 4K (or lower to match the pixel grid)? If so wouldn’t that kind of upscaling and downscaling method be prefereable over DLAA?

Pol Kallamata

Hey guys. I'm wondering about how all of you feel about "Digital Foundry said it" becoming an increasingly common meme in online discussions about video games, as a means of deferring to authority and shutting down a conversation. Have you come across this in the past? And do you generally find it amusing and flattering? Or is it more so annoying with regards to things that Digital Foundry never actually said?

Matt Hargett

In John's Switch OLED review, his performance comparison didn't include exploring if the upper limits of overclocking CPU/GPU/bus clocks are different, or if the minimum resolution in DRS titles have changed. Will those details be covered in a separate video?

TransTechGirl

Yes or no... Chromatic aberration? Film Grain? Vignette? Motion blur (camera, per object, per pixel)?

Hello DF Crew! I recently returned to the handful of "Last Gen Revisited" articles you produced in late 2014. Just a year into the generation, the differences in visual fidelity in games like Call of Duty Advanced Warfare and Dragon Age Inquisition were night and day. Extreme upgrades in lighting, post processing, texture quality, scene geometry, etc. We are now at a similar point in this generation, but the only major differences I notice in many games between even the base PS4/X1 and their next gen equivalents is resolution and select use of ray tracing. Is this an example of focusing more on high framerates, diminishing returns in new hardware, or are developers not leveraging the power of the new machines at a similar level to last time?

Tatsu123

THIS x 1000. I’d love to see John and Audi take on the fighting genre in DF Retro. We got MK but MK low key sucks.

Tatsu123

John x Audi? Where the bloodclot is your DF Retro episode on Ranger X???? We suffered through Zool! SHEESH! 😝

Tatsu123

It was an AI accelerator. Not really a graphics card, but I’d love DF to tackle this, too!

Somatyk

I'm saying nothing🤣
