We're still coordinating final admin on the Eurogamer side of things, but here's our first Horizon Forbidden West video of the week. This should be going live for everyone a bit later today, once all the text side of things has been signed off.

Unfortunately, limits on the amount of footage we post means that our more in-depth platform comparison has to wait until launch day. However, the key points on how PS4 compares against PS5 - plus screenshots - will be in the Eurogamer article we post later today.

I’ve been waiting for this and wondered how much earlier we’ll be able to get the review, thanks! That’s my lunch break sorted!

Thanks guys, saw reviews from other YouTube channels going live like 2 hours back, but this video is of course the real one I was waiting for :P

Shame the ps5 doesn't have universal VRR support. Id love to have seen fidelity mode run unlocked... Even more interesting would be if it got to nearly 60 most of the time. They should have done a 4k30, dynamic res 60. I know the perf mode is already dynamic but I mean same detail settings, draw distance etc as fidelity mode but at 60 with DRS from 4k down to 1440p... Or lower if they needed. Seriously Sony... VRR needs to happen.

I'm not sure VRR would have made a big difference here, to be honest. To lock to 60fps, the game drops to checkerboard 1800p. That's effectively around one third of the pixel throughput of the quality mode.

Oh... Then I heard wrong, watched a review that said it was rendering at 1800p not 1800p WITH checkerboard upscaling. I haven't watched your video yet I was just about to. Still though you gotta admit having VRR would be nice. I'll play perf mode until it's released on PC then I'll play again lol

Give it a go, but John and I both ended up settling on quality mode as the visual quality is vastly improved.

Awesome video! I think you should start putting the "watch this video in HQ" on the beginning of the videos btw, I always feel like it's stupid to put them at the end when the videos are already consumed. Most people don't want to rewatch the video they just watched, even great videos like this one.

Isn't it an advert for the DF supporter program, though? We have the downloads links posted for us at the bottom of the page, so for us at least, they're already there. It's up to you if you download the file or go straight to YouTube.

Sure, I just felt quite stupid after the "You've watched this video in the wrong place" reminder at the end of the video. A "there's a better place to watch this" reminder at the start of the video would make more sense.

I'll try but... I think I've become a frame rate snob lol. The last 2 years have been great on console and on the PC side I have a 5800x, 32 gigs ddr4 4000mt CL14-14-14-34 and a 3080ti FTW3 Ultra. All hooked up to a HDMI 2.1 Atmos receiver with working 4k120 HDR VRR ALLM etc etc. 3 inputs!

How long have you been a member? I had a hard time remembering at first but I think if they put it up front it would be annoying to non members more than having it at the end might be to one of us

I have only one gripe with this video - it wasn't in HDR, not even for supporters! 🤏😭 Other than that it was top-notch though!!! 💪😎 Can't wait to play it on PC in 3 years! 👏😂

Great review from John - as always! One thing that puzzled me though is your preference to play the game at 4K@30 over the 1800p checkerboard presentation that gives you 60 fps. I would have thought that Horizon is exactly the kind of game where the greater framerate justifies some visual sacrifices. Guess I‘ll have to see for myself.

The image quality in the 60fps mode is surprisingly poor. The TAA doesn't clear up nearly as much shimmer as solutions in other games. Surprised this was the best solution. A native 1440p could have honestly been a good alternative
