Yeeaaah you know what time it is! Indeed, this week we will be hosting DF Direct Weekly with Rich, Tom and John on the panel to answer all your burning Steam Deck, Elden Ring and Gran Turismo 7 questions! And with that said, let's not waste any time, let's get those questions added below!

Do you feel like games with bad performance and optimization, like Elden Ring, can deserve the 10/10 "Masterpiece" label?

Seansnake

Are there any specific in game achievements/trophy/accomplishments that you guys are particularly proud of? Rich this does not include the Crysis 3 Platinum trophy.

Ray

Jon, what do you think about the idea of a 1080p 120hz mode in GT7? I feel like if they can pull off native 4k 60hz with TAA, then there is a good possibility that it could perform competently in a 1080p 120hz mode.

GreenSwede

Hello DF! I'm waiting impatiently for my Steam Deck to arrive in Q2 and I'm wondering: how many settings are there for calibrating the display? Is it more traditional in a sense like a monitor with settings such as sharpness, gamma, color temp, and more? And now after you've had the Deck hands on for a while, do you feel the LCD display matches your expectations or is there still more Valve could have done to improve it further?

To start with Congrats on reaching over 50 Episodes (51 Now), it feels like only yesterday you did the first one. The question I want to ask is around the fact that thanks to the new Nvidia leak we have confirmation of both DLSS support and the T239 Chipset for the next generation of Nintendo console. What I'd love to know is what's your current take on all of this, do you have any expectations for what the T239 will be (based off its Jetson AVG bigger brother) etc?

ConcreteLlama

From Software make some incredible games - some of my absolute favourites - but the fact we're still seeing performance related technical issues in their games is concerning. Is there any indication as to what is actually causing the poor framerate in Elden Ring? It's almost as if they left some debug settings or weirdly expensive setting on and didn't think to turn it off. At this point I feel like From should just make their games then when they think it's finished, get a 3rd party to immediately remaster them.

How hard and abruptly do you think GPU pricing will fall in June, when Ethereum switches away from GPU mining?

RealTime Shade Thrower

beyond the obvious desire to play my entire Steam library on the Steam Deck, I thrill to the thoughts of playing my collected ROMs and perhaps some GoG games on the system. How disappointed am I going to be?

MittenFacedLass

Not to beat a dead horse, but any chance you'll cover GRID Legends? Also apparently the GTA definitive edition trilogy has gotten some quite large patches full of fixes. Would be curious to see how much has actually changed with that situation? Unfortunately I've not anything to ask actually exciting. Sorry! D:

I’m really curious about the Steam Deck acoustics. Several reviewers mentioned the fan is loud. Do you think the Deck passes the “significant other couch test”, meaning the fan and buttons are quiet enough to play sitting next to someone else? Thanks!

I've tried getting into PC gaming a few times as I find the potential there compelling, however I have always found that there's just too much friction (+ I sit at a desk all day working with software, last thing I want is for my hobby to feel like an extension of my job). I've always preferred a more curated console like experience because you pretty much just launch a game and it works, and recently it seems a lot of PC games are getting released with issues just not present in console games. Do you foresee a time where we can get a more curated PC experience with less fiddling and more actual gaming - build a powerful box then shove it under your TV? I think it would be pretty great to be able to build a PC but basically just have it boot into the Xbox dashboard - all the power, none of the complication (for the end user.. I get that it's not quite as simple to actually implement).

RealTime Shade Thrower

the feeling I have is that Valve is trying to build towards just such a future, particularly with some of their earlier (failed) experiments...

ctg867

I really enjoyed Rich's Steam Deck analysis. It's a fascinating machine that I'm considering buying, but I had some lingering questions. What happens when you insert an aftermarket NVMe or install Windows without proper drivers? Also, how good is it at emulation? If you have the time and interest I'd love to see your findings. Thanks!

In an interview, From Software claimed that they felt pressured by Bluepoints succesful take on Demon's Souls, in terms of graphical fidelity. Since the release of Elden Ring, the graphics as well as the performance aren't up to par with Demons Souls remake. Should From Software have reached out to Bluepoint to inherit some of their expertise? Is it common for studios to collaborate on such a project?

MittenFacedLass

I'd almost argue they maybe deserve it even more? If the game is so good that people still think it's revolutionary and exceptional to that level despite technical issues, doesn't that mean it's truly at another level, at least to them? The fact that it still gets 10s, is even more impressive, /because/ of the technical issues. That said, i can understand the argument against. But I think it's also not uncommon for games that are remarkable to sometimes be pushing the edges or struggling because of all they're trying to do? Think say, Shadow of the Colossus, Breath of the Wild, etc. All had technical issues and limitations, sometimes quite bad, but were lauded despite that. I think that speaks to them still deserving that recognition, since they were able to shine through despite their faults. But if you consider 10/masterpiece to be something that's perfect, then sure, I can see how you wouldn't count them then.

Curious if you guys have tried the steam remote play feature on the steam deck for games that are not validated to play natively on the Deck. How has performance been for that? Any better than using an iPad/hacked Vita/etc?

sj33 (Jake)

I think the Steam Deck looks excellent and I can't wait for mine, but is there a danger that PC developers will be held back just as we're finally beginning to move out of the cross-gen period? We all hope the Steam Deck will be a big success, but that success will presumably see PC developers more obliged to provide compatibility. Scalability only goes so far.

The Dressing Gown

What are your thoughts about the no doubt inevitable push for 8k next gen? (As if resolution is all that matters with games 😑) Do you think we would/should ever push for 8k given the extremely high detail of 4k? I personally don't see the point in going above 4k, I'm not even sure most would notice the difference. Though admittedly I've never personally witnessed 8k. I'd rather this not be the point we start focusing on detail, framerate and Mr Battaglia's favourite ray tracing 😂

Sloth

A lot of shader compilation issues are left to developers to mitigate in DX12 currently. But are there more things companies like AMD, NVidia and Valve can do to help improve the experience for users? For example, more ways for pre-calculated shaders to be shared among players with the same card and drivers. Or Valve requiring that games integrate shader compilation with Steam so players can queue up and compile shaders in advance through the GUI in a similar manner to the Downloads window.

Hey guys. I am really curious about the upcoming Samsung and Dell QD-OLED monitors. It seems that they are at a 1440p resolution. I have a gaming PC but also a Series X. My question is, how does up- and downscaling work with a Xbox Series X? Games like Control and Cyberpunk seems to be 1440p anyways, but will I loose to much visual fidelity in comparison to using my old LG C6 OLED?

AFC Steve

Question for John, I know you're also a fan of ultrawide monitors and whats your thoughts on the new QD OLED 34" ultrawide coming at the end of month with a quite modest price for what you're getting? Is this a turning point in the PC monitor space? There should be much competetion now at even better prices and finally Pc HDR can start getting better support.

I'm still a little disappointed about the lack of VRR on the steam deck as a stable 60 FPS seems to be a little hard to achieve in some games. Which got me thinking about what Alex said a couple times about the fact that most PC monitors can be set to a 50HZ mode and consequently run games at 50 FPS with even framepacing. Do you think it would be feasible for Valve to integrate the functionality of a 50Hz mode in the Steam Deck via a software update? I think a slider in the overlay for 60/50/30 and even 25 FPS would be a great feature to have given the limited power and batterie. As far as I know most panels aren't build for 40Hz or could that also be an option? I would love to hear your thoughts! PS: What about Switch?!?

On DF Direct Weekly #29 (54:03), John mentioned the Dolby Atmos latency issue on Xbox Series X effecting everyone. Any updates?

What are your thoughts around so many people calling Elden Ring “Best Game Of All Time”, “10/10”, “Masterpiece”, etc? With all of the obvious technical issues (PC/Console Performance as a huge one) how could that be realistically true, looking at the whole picture? Do you think most people don’t notice these problems or assume that issues like these will just “go away” over time with bug fixes and patches (and thus should be ignored when writing such “fantastic” reviews)?

mrtnptrs

With games and emulators being notorious for having many issues with AMD GPU-drivers, do you think this will negatively affect games/emulators in the future on Steam Deck? Also regarding support, because AMD most likely produces a special driver for the Steam Deck that could be updated a bit later than the regular AMD-drivers thus potentially getting fixes later than the PC-platform... Does SteamOS 3.0 allow automatic updates of the AMD GPU driver, independent of OS-updates itself or does Valve first have to approve it (QA-testing etc.), thus potentially delaying the release of the driver?

Doc

Hey team, I recently discovered that Xbox Series' fps boost is still available on a game that was installed from disc and not updated (tried with Recore vanilla). Could that open possibilities on your analysis in the futur ?

Anonymous

Elden Ring is the latest game in a long series to feature shader compilation and other stuttering on PC. On the user’s end, what can be done with hardware and software to mitigate this in lieu of a proper fix? Would better CPU, memory, or SSD performance help? What about playing with double or triple buffer Vsync? Or capping the game’s frame rate?

someone

To John and the team: do you think that GT7 was held back by its cross-gen nature? And to what degree? Talking more generally, we have seen some great cross-gen scaling in titles like Forza on Xbox and Horizon on PS, but that's purely on the graphical side of things, what about the actual core design and gameplay of cross-gen games that have to run on the weak CPUs and mechanical hard drives of last gen? Coming back to gran turismo, fans have been asking for more cars on track, but GT7 brings no improvement in this sense if I'm not mistaken. Possibly a PS4 CPU limitation? Thoughts?

The Wooniest Woona

We've seen a lot of cross-gen games over the years. What would you consider the high points and low points for cross-gen games? No need to limit to this current transition.

A couple of weeks ago John mentioned feeling a sense of awe when he got his 3dfx Voodo. My question for everyone is do you get this sense of awe from new hardware or software often and are there any stand-out examples? I ask because my farther (born in the 60's) can only recall feeling this twice - when he also got a 3dfx voodoo & then again when he first experienced VR. Whereas I was born in the 90's and I find myself awe-struck at least once or twice per console generation though not necessarily on consoles. (Thanks)

Alex - Can you do a video on “The Future of Raytacing”

Sven Dahlin

Alex, do you think that rasterisation performance will be less important in the PC GPU space in the future? With a 4K canvas becoming the norm (it's hard to see 8K becoming a thing) and diminishing returns on frame rates above 120/144Hz (except for niche competitive gamers), pushing more pixels than 4K/144Hz doesn't make a lot of sense and we are almost there already with high-end GPUs. Maybe the increased transistor count in future GPUs could be used for other things; more ray-tracing, geometry processing, tesselation, AI geometry generation, etc.?

Anonymous

In your opinion(s) is the Steam Deck fundamentally different than all other handheld gaming devices because, unlike Gameboy, DS, PS Vita, et al., its gaming library will never be 'taken offline'?

Lou Kolliver

Hi DF. Performance has always been a function of both computing power and game code efficiency. However, with the disappointing performance of recent titles such as Elden Ring, Halo Infinite and GTA Remastered, is it fair to say that raw compute is becoming an increasingly less relevant factor in the performance equation? To put it another way; as hardware becomes more powerful, can we expect to see more games with technical issues (such as random stuttering and frame drops) that can't be easily attributed to hardware constraints? Alternatively, will we see a brighter future where more powerful hardware smooths out most of the bumps we see in current gen games?

Robert Brown

Would you consider an enhanced PS5 that’s more XT than pro to be worthwhile? The full 40 computer units, higher clocks and faster ram but using the same die as the PS5 slim. Even with the current generation consoles some game still seem to end up in the frame rate no man’s land. Is slightly more power of the answer or do we need a solution like VRR.

Timothy Pecoraro

Would John consider doing a Gran Turismo retrospective video? His Gran Turismo 7 video was so good, it really intrigued me at the possibilities.

Homunculus

The open-source Wine project seems to have finally found its calling in Valve's Proton game compatibility layer. As the Steam Deck impressively shows, most modern games work well enough, offering decent performance. Why do you think is Google's Linux-based Stadia not using Proton to bolster its game library?

Homunculus

With Elden Ring, we once again see a AAA game performing a fair bit better on PS5 than on Xbox Series X. What exactly makes a game benefit from the PlayStation’s higher GPU clock speed, despite having nominally fewer TFLOPs than the Xbox? Is this just poor optimisation on FromSoftware’s part or is there a technically justifiable reason?

Bishop Nelson

Perhaps you've covered this and I missed it so forgive me if you have but I'd be interested to see a performance comparison between the 2080ti and 3070 exclusively in regards to ray tracing. They touted double the RT performance so I'd love to see if that was true. The raster performance is almost a match. Unfortunately the RT core count isn't but it'd still be interesting I think. Cheers! Und auf Wiedersehen!

Jordan Spano

As Microsoft pushes for more and more scope in terms of their software output, (as recent acquisitions suggest) does their increasing ubiquity in that space push Sony further into developing their hold on the hardware? Because as I feel like as Microsoft tries to adopt a position in gaming similar to their position on PC of being the main OS/Publisher of software the push to streaming seems to abstract developers from a target set of hardware to work with, a void Sony could potentially fill.

Anonymous

With the release of the Steam Deck and consoles having multiple performance options, do you think PC games should start to allow players to save separate configs for graphics settings? This would greatly improve quality of life if you're switching from say a 4K TV, Steam Deck or 240hz Monitor. Thoughts?

kingpenumbra

Elden Ring would be a DX12 game on the Xbox Platform of Consoles, which all use DX12 anyway, so why doesnt it seem that any of them suffer from shader comp issues in any game really?

tod weitzel

What would your gut reaction be to a hypothetical acquisition of Valve by Microsoft?

Mark Smith

When Gran Turismo 7 goes "end of life" in time, do you think Polyphony and Sony will make the game still playable offline in some way for people who still own it? Older Forza Horizon titles going back to the original are still playable in spite of their servers being shut down many years ago. Would a company consider it a disadvantage to allow a game like this to be able to be played in some form after the developer has ceased supporting the game? Thank you for the awesome content and very informative reviews you always provide. Cheers!

Have you considered expanding your technical analysis to include a game’s HDR implementation? I think this would be a great area to expand to as games have become better here, but too many are still over the place or doing SDR in an HDR container (FF7, Cyberpunk). Analyzing whether the game actually uses Wide Color Gamut and the HDR luminance range + best settings would put games under the DF microscope and could spur improvement in this area as the only people I know that do this are Vincent and Evil Boris, but on a limited basis. You also don’t need to present the video in HDR to do this, which I know is a pain with YouTube. Or are the costs of proper HDR analysis tools too prohibitive still to do this?

Myles C. Maxfield

How come you haven't mentioned Amazon Luna in your various streaming videos?

Slurpy Beckerman

It's a good question and if it doesnt get answered check the latest Gran Turismo vid, John brings this up!

digitalfoundry

We don't have access to it in the UK, I believe, and Amazon has not approached us at all about coverage!
