Carl Johnson

Punisher has always been an anti-hero. In his first introduction in the comics he was hunting down Spider-Man. It was when Spider-Man was framed and the Punisher thought he was a bad guy.

The cinematography and camera work seriously elevate this show so much. It's not even that there's awesome action, which there is, but the way it's shot is incredibly beautiful and dramatic and even haunting at times. I agree, it's awkward especially now that Foggy knows and Karen's the odd woman out. Foggy's an incredible friend but it's also a lot of pressure being put on him. Sure, it's nice for Matt now that he has his best friend to talk to about this stuff but who does Foggy talk to? Who does he have to vent to when Matt's missing or going after someone as dangerous as Punisher? Foggy's literally in the position Matt was when he first started crime fighting. Secrets, lies, and alibis. From one perspective, I understand the whole "protecting the ones you love" aspect but as we've seen from other heroes' stories, they're going to be in danger regardless so shouldn't they at least know what's potentially around them so they're more aware? "Hm, Matt is Daredevil and I have a thing for Matt, maybe I shouldn't cut through the dark alley to get home anymore." 2 episodes is, what, an hour 50 minutes total? This is why some movies can't work as well as shows can because these two episodes alone have built up so much regarding Punisher and the clash between him and Daredevil. A two-hour movie has to rush through the build-up and the extra details to cram everything into a shorter runtime. Season 1 of Daredevil, even season 1 of Jessica Jones, I could see how it could be shortened into movie length. But Daredevil season 2 needs its own trilogy, spin-offs, and novel tie-ins and this is only episode 2.

The Punisher vs Daredevil has been amazing so far. The fighting has been thrilling and we see glimpses of Punisher's own morals in the shop. The deaf scene with Matt is so terrifying. You are blind and rely on your hearing so to have it go away even for a second makes you a prisoner in your own head. Unable to process anything at all. Reyes appeared in the finale of JJ

Richard Flores

It does say something about Jon's acting that you already recognize the silhouette. It is just that walk when the shop scene happens and The Punisher enters, but he's in the background and out of focus, and you gleefully say "Here he is!"

So...a reminder (because it's been a minute and you watch a lot of things)...Matt didn't choose to tell Foggy. Foggy found him bloody from his fight with Nobu. Him choosing to tell Foggy on his own might have made him a halfway decent guy and that, frankly, wouldn't be in keeping with his usual character. So I'm completely transparent here...I can't stand Matt. To me, he's a sanctimonious man-child who hides behind religion to give him a moral code...because without Catholicism, I'm not entirely sure he has one. He's a broodier budget Batman (and I fucking HATE Batman.) I suffer through his series for Karen and Foggy (and 2nd Season for the Punisher, primarily) and he consistently undervalues their friendship...even though this is twice now that Foggy has saved him. Revisiting the Jessica Jones Simpson-esque toxic masculinty...see also: Matt Murdock. His ego drives him to think that he alone is capable of stopping all of the crime in Hell's Kitchen and he won't entertain even a whiff of someone implying that he doesn't know everything and is capable of being wrong. To him, it's not possible that he could be partially responsible for a more violent vigilante (to be fair to him, Punisher gonna punish...I don't think for a moment he was inspired by Matt...but the point is, according to Mahoney others HAVE BEEN...and Matt refuses to take any kind of responsibility for it). To him, he's good because he doesn't kill (intentionally...but he's not exactly stopping and checking vitals/providing any sort of aid most of the time...it's only a matter of time before someone dies of their injuries at his hands) but he enjoys inflicting pain. He likes "letting the devil out". Bruh. That is not "good" by societal standards, my guy. He's a whole-ass mess of a human, IMHO. I prefer my anti-heroes as being aware that they aren't great people...not trying to hold themselves up as pillars of piety. Suck it up, Matty...you're flawed and broken and your friends deserve better.

Rat MacKay

Jon Bernthal was born to play that role (to be fair, I've yet to see him play a role where I didn't think he embodied the part completely... he's a fantastic actor that will consistently be overlooked because of the parts he plays...much like Cillian Murphy was for the longest time... I'm looking forward to the day the world recognizes what a talent Jonny B truly is)

Christopher simeon

Yep matt does have flaws that you pointed out. He is a complex character but I would not call him a man child. He struggles with his morality and what he does constantly. We saw him last season almost kill Fisk. He still has some lessons to learn of course.

Nathan Jasper

I had to take a day to really think about this. I didn't want to fly off at the mouth. And then I realized... There's my answer. We all use something as a basis for our "code" in life. Matt uses religion. I use guilt. You apparently use disdain 😂 we all base our desire to be better people on some aspect of our lives. As the Doctor says: "Good men don't need rules. Today's not the day to find out why I have so many." As far as ego, nah I don't agree. If that's also part of why you hate Batman, I would argue that no one else was going to step up. Batman literally lives in a town of crooks and villains and Commisioner Gordon was too blinded by doing things by the book that his code didn't allow for him to act outside the law. Hence why Batman's needed. Back to Matt, his situation is slightly different. He lives in a world of heroes BUT those heroes are so focused on the big bads that they don't see what's underneath. Iron Man even said Vulture was under his pay grade. He helped cause he cared that Peter cared. Otherwise, probably wouldn't have bothered until it was too late. Matt, at least in his tiny section of New York called Hell's Kitchen, IS the only one stepping up. Spider-Man can't do everything. Even a one-man army like Punisher can't do everything. Spidey and Punisher aren't solely focused on Hell's Kitchen like Matt is. He cares about his community and he wants to do his part. As far as the liking the violence type thing, yeah, it probably does feel damn good to beat the hell out of a child trafficker or a rapist. While I do align more with Punisher when it comes to disgusting people like that, there is merit to what Matt's trying to do. People make mistakes, a good bulk of them deserve a second chance. Anyone that hurts kids and abuses or kills for the fun of it? Nah, put them down. Anyway, we're all hypocrites. It's part of being human. And we're all stubborn in our own ways.

Rat MacKay

Logic. I'm primarily driven by logic, not disdain. I express myself a variety of ways...disdain is just what shines through when talking about someone that I dislike...sorry if me disliking a character puts you in your feelings about it. And, no...that's not what I dislike about Batman. I dislike everything about Batman (which is on par with the bulk of DC. Characters are 2D, no nuance.) I align waaaay more with Punisher and have no problem with someone beating the crap out of or killing people when it's justified...but I DO have a problem with them continuing to act like they are morally better than damn near everyone while they get enjoyment out of some of the same things as the "bad" people do. There's a lot I can't say for spoiler reasons, so I feel a bit hamstrung at the moment. I will say that a religious lawyer who cares about his community has a LOT of ways that he could ALSO be helping that community but the thing he devotes most of his time to is the one that gives him a chance to beat on people.

Nathan Jasper

No it doesn't hurt or "put me in my feelings", just enjoy some friendly debate every now and then :) your take on it is interesting and it made me actually take time to think and ruminate. I enjoyed that, the challenge of it. You have interesting thoughts on it!

Rat MacKay

My bad...having my "code" reduced to merely disdain apparently had me in my feelings first thing in my morning ;) I took it wrong, mea culpa.

Rat MacKay

I don't expect anyone else to view him the same way as me, but I say man-child because that's how I see it. It's gotta be HIS way and he isn't above throwing a little tantrum when it isn't. And, without getting spoilery, I can't give examples. To be fair to him, I don't think it's all entirely his fault on an emotional level... he's got metric fucktonnes of trauma that he hasn't worked through and it's the sort of thing where he had to grow up really fast...but emotionally didn't so much. He's an adult now and should hit a therapist's couch instead of turning to a priest...not that Father Lantum doesn't have his best interests in mind and all, but spiritual work isn't the same as emotional work.

The award for best jump scare since Pennywise grabbed Beverly in the bathroom in IT goes to…KL picking up an empty water cup. I literally laughed out loud and when the episode was over, rewatched that moment and laughed again. Regarding the episode, I feel that name dropping “The Punisher” in this episode, taking into account the information available to the characters seems…forced. I think we could have gone a little longer and organically come up with the name. For all they know this could still be a criminal trying to take out the competition. “Punisher” implies admonishment for an infraction. Seems like a leap. Anyway. Beyond that, I am literally afraid to comment about anything else the for fear of spoiling anything. I’ll just say I love your enthusiasm for this series.

Onno Smits

I don't have anything of substance to comment, just wanted to chime in and say I'm having a good time watching this with you! I didn't remember a single thing about these two episodes, so this was like a first-time watch for me as well.

Nathan Jasper

You know there's something else I was going to add and this is a perfect time to do it. In the Ben Affleck Daredevil movie, Matt's always there either in the late late hours or early early morning. The priest acknowledges this and says that Matt isn't there to confess he's there because he enjoys the solitude. And I know they're two different adaptations but maybe that carries over a little bit? He's just there for the solitude and to talk to an unbiased friend? I don't know I could be completely wrong but just a thought. But I do agree he needs to talk to a professional therapist not someone that's going to feed into his religious stance.

Nathan Jasper

Also I'm very sorry if I offended you in any way. I'm always truly impressed by competent arguments rather than the typical hatemongering on the internet and you had multiple paragraphs of competence and I absolutely loved that. I love the challenge of defending my viewpoint against people that actually know what the hell they're talking about. So maybe disdain was the wrong word to use but I was thoroughly impressed by your points.

Rat MacKay

The media didn't come up with the name, ADA Tower said that their people working on a profile for the shooter gave him The Punisher as a codename.

Rat MacKay

I didn't watch the film version because the character doesn't interest me enough (and I can't stand Affleck) to want to see other iterations, so I can't speak too much to it. As for the rest...it's all good. As first it felt a bit like you were debating the person not the point, but it's likely just tone not coming across ideally via text. It's all good. :) i enjoy having spirited discussions, just not so much when it feels like it's more about me than my opinion. I'm glad my ranting and rambling is at least mostly well-received...even if not fully agreed with.

Bryan Dempsey

Thanks for pointing that out. I edited my comment. The name still seems premature in this episode. To me anyway.

Rat MacKay

If I were a profiler and someone who had been spraying bullets ALSO took the time and effort to hang some of the people on meat hooks, I would think it was definitely deeper than just taking out the competition (not that it HAS to be, necessarily, but my mind would automatically search for more meaning) so I can see them settling on something similar...but I agree that the audience didn't need that reveal this early...but i get why they did (but won't go into for spoileryness)
