The Black Mirror vibes are stronger for me now after this episode. I don't feel confident about any of my theories so far, but I can't wait to keep watching and learn more!

I love following characters through mysteries and being alongside them as they question and try to figure things out.

Please enjoy my reaction and I'm looking forward to your comments! [Direct link here.]

Ugh again?! So sorry. 😭 Idk why it's taking forever to process again.

Crazy stuff. Yea I am still confused as well but I like the mystery. Random question was Miss Selvig hitting on Mark when they were having cookies. Felt a weird vibe.

Hmmm I feel like I'd have to watch that scene again. I can't say a hit on was super obvious to me, at least. But I might have been a little oblivious!

Just so you know, I don't talk about anything you haven't seen yet. Part of the re-watchability of the show is seeing how much everything said, how it's said, what they choose to show us in cinematography, everything are clues. I was locked-in the first time watching it and there's still no way you can glean what's going on, exactly, until they want you to know. I know that I'm STILL not catching everything. It's like having a 10,000 piece puzzle and every episode they give you about 10 pieces (obvious ones and many other less obvious ones that mean little to you at the time), so there's no way to fully grasp the story. This is building lore through a mystery. I think of it as a parallel universe, since they said Lumon has been around since the 1800s, so that made me try to pay attention to the rules of THIS world we're in. If you remember the dinner/not dinner party from the last episode, every one of those people were unclear what Lumon does, exactly. I'll just say, it's good to theorize, but you will miss clues (overt and covert) if you take the time to theorize while watching the episodes. I haven't watched Black Mirror, even though I was psyched to watch it 'cause I kept seeing younger people talk about it like how people of my generation talked about "The Twilight Zone," but I didn't get past the first episode. I cannot tell you how PISSED OFF that episode made me and I was like, "If this is the quality of the writing of the stories, this ain't no Twilight Zone and fuck this show." People have told me that it gets better after that one, but that's another thing, they chose that one to kick off the series? This was them putting their best foot forward? BTW, I didn't have a problem with the subject matter of the episode, so don't think it's because that turned me off or anything. It's the writing of the ending of it that felt lazy and unsatisfying. But, I should give it another shot since it's an anthology and therefore will have different stories with different writers. Man, thinking about it to this day still pisses me off. 😂 Mind you, if I watch the 2nd episode and I feel the same after it, I probably won't go any further. Since it's been, about, 5 years or so since I watched that first episode, I should keep going because I know some people talk about how some of the eps are absolute bangers. So, I may give it 5 more episodes to win me over.

Black Mirror Is a show you do not have to watch in any sort of order. I'd strongly recommend watching San Junipero and White Christmas. They're the episodes I show when I am showing someone Black Mirror for the first time. I definitely don't like that episode you're talking about and I never rewatch it. I'm already excited to rewatch cause there are things shown that make zero sense to me right now, but I know they will later. This is gonna be fun. 🎉

Thadman

That makes me feel better about jumping back into Black Mirror. Thanks.

You're welcome! Have you seen True Detective? I haven't but I've been told each season has separate characters, story, and actors. Black Mirror is the same except it's every episode.

Watching along with you for first time too. I have put off watching this one, despite loving everything I have seen Adam Scott in (Party Down, Parks and Rec, the Good Place.) The only thing I knew or thought I knew was it was about a stressful corporate job and he got a procedure because he did not want to remember it. As someone with a stressful corporate job, that did not seem like something I wanted to watch in my spare time. But obviously it looks like it is much more than that. And maybe his job is a chance to get away from his stressful life instead. I am very intrigued! Love the direction and visuals too! Glad these reactions inspired me to give it a shot. Excited to see where it goes.

Ooh interesting theory about escaping the "outie" life. I am definitely eager to learn more about how the world works outside of Lumon.

I watched the 1st season, which I LOVE as one of my favorite seasons of TV ever. Didn't hear much good about S2 of it but I did hear good things about S3, which I haven't watched yet, but that's mainly 'cause of the state of things that I just been mainly focused on things that make me feel good and not focus on downers. I'm depressed enough as it is. Perhaps when I finally find another job (was let go in December). But, with the trajectory of the world, it may be a while 'til I'm feeling better.

The state of the system is putting a real damper on things lately, I feel that. Definitely understand sticking to more positive stuff.

The thing about Dylan's theory, I think that was Ben Stiller and the writers trolling us because they knew what they had and they knew that there would be some crazy ass theories. It's kind of like how we sometimes mirror people to be part of the group so Dylan talking about his own theory and Irving's Theory, I think, is what really kicked off the theorizing. It was an invitation to join in the party. That's just how I interpret it. Anyway, I am so so excited for your theories as we go!

Thanks Julian! I have wanted to watch it for a while, but just had other priorities before now. Better late than never though! I'm glad you're enjoying the rewatch with me!

That's a great shout! Very excited to keep theorizing here.

These first few episodes made my mind go totally nuts with possibilities for the plot and potential future concepts. I've seen both seasons now and my mind is still racing, but as it goes on, you do get a feel for what the show is truly about and where it might be headed. Fantastic show. VERY rewatchable.

I bet! So excited to keep continuing and for the eventual rewatch.

This show sent me back to Black Mirror as well. Think the writer Dan Erickson has mentioned it as one of his biggest influences on the show.
