This is a compliment about the movie: I'll never watch it again. 😅 (But I do think everyone should watch it at least once.) Version watched is the theatrical version: 2h27m

Looking forward to your comments! [Direct link here.]

It's been a long time since I saw it, but I do agree that it is a film everyone should see. I also think I agree with the "only once" sentiment. It's a hard watch.

Chris Thom

Such a darkly beautiful film to look at. Gorgeous cinematography. Very hypnotic kind of film. FFC is one of the best directors we've ever had imo.

Chris Thom

Admittedly I fast forward through the hardest scenes. But I do like to rewatch it for all the beautiful shot compositions and music and such.

Christopher simeon

Random question have you seen the TV series Buffy the vampire Slayer?

Steve Mercier

If I have a top ten or a top twenty or a top whatever movie list, it's constantly in flux. New movies are added, my tastes change (or are perhaps refined) as I get older, and so on. But my top three movies have pretty much been the same for a long time--though they switch places too. This one is in the top three. Based on Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, with a healthy dose of Homer's The Odyssey thrown in, all beamed through the spectrum of madness that was the Vietnam War...this is for me one of the greatest movies ever made. It haunts you: yes. Because it gets it right. Remove the boundaries, the consequences of civilized society, and what do we become? Definitely watched this one more than once, but I don't mean that as some stupid brag. I fucking love this movie. Going to eat breakfast while I watch this.

Hypnotic is a great term to use to describe this one. And yeah, very gorgeous film. The scale is crazy.

Movies with KL

Not often I feel that way about a movie, but sometimes that will pop up for various reasons. This one was just sooooo heavy. Even heavier for me than films that emotionally wreck me.

Christopher simeon

The first time I heard about this movie is a reference from there. Great series though it is a bit long like AOS. They are both Whedon shows. Joss did buffy and his brother Jed did AOS.

Movies with KL

I've heard it's very good, but yeah 7 seasons is quite the commitment. But I'll definitely consider it in the future whenever I want to tackle long TV series.

Chris Thom

That last shot of the boat going into the dark sunset before they get to Kurtz' camp gives me chills every time.

Chris Thom

It is. But I think the hope lies in the fact that we (US) came to our senses and got OUT of there eventually. It also may help with the heaviness if you remember that it's based on a novel that a lot of HS students are required to read. The literary aspect helps me except it more for some reason.

Books are such a different medium, that reading and viewing/hearing the same thing can result in different experiences, at least for me!

Paul Howard

One thing I do like is that we have 3 different, but all worth watching, Vietnam films that tackle it in different ways. This, Good Morning Vietnam and Full Metal Jacket

Movies with KL

Paul, I definitely want to watch those at some point soon. I know FMJ is a rough one too, but in a much different way than AN.

Paul Howard

FMJ is well worth the watch and a masterclass of filmmaking, especially when you realise it's all filmed in the UK which somehow was transformed into all the various locations for the film. All because Stanley Kubrick hated air travel so pretty much only filmed in the UK from the 60's onwards.

Sam

Great film. Great reaction. My favorite part of your reaction was when you said, "This actor's really good", when referring to Dennis Hopper's monologue. I couldn't tell whether you knew it was Dennis Hopper and was being low key about it, or whether you genuinely didn't know it was Dennis Hopper. Either way, that reaction was very cool. And just a note on that monologue—"the man is clear in his mind, but his soul is mad..."—there is an excellent film called Nil By Mouth (it'll probably never show up on your reaction radar, but if you like super bleak British indie films, I'd highly recommend you give it a watch) which has a scene where one of the characters is watching Apocalypse Now and recites Hopper's entire monologue while it's playing on the tv.

Movies with KL

I've only seen Dennis Hopper in Speed (just checked) - definitely don't know him!

Sam

Well, that just makes your reaction even cooler.

Chris Thom

Hopper totally sucked me in with his performance. Perfect addition to the cast and the overall tension of the movie's climax.

Chris Thom

Think it's in my top ten as well.

Chris Thom

That really seems to have a major cult following. Gets brought up quite a bit on every reaction channel I've seen. I've only seen the movie myself.

Christopher simeon

The movie is a poor representation. The TV show is much better. Up there with the best of them.

Chris Thom

I've been getting Buffy, Angel, and Charmed mixed up for so long. Not sure if there's any overlap in the story and characters? Actually Angel I'm 90 percent has something to do with Buffy because I remember all the photos with dude and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Guy Gordon

Easily one of my all-time favorites. I've seen it many times, in its various edits. I don't always agree with doing the theatrical version of films over later director revisions, as I prefer many director's cuts (and in some cases, they are absolutely the one that people should see for their first viewing), but in this case I think doing the theatrical is a proper first experience. I personally prefer The Final Cut, as I think the Redux version adds too much back in and The FInal Cut finds a happy medium. But the theatrical cut is a perfectly good cut to go with and prefer. FWIW, this is arguably the most difficult movie ever made, production-wise (ones like The Abyss are up there, too). It was an insanely challening shoot that had so many difficulties and setbacks, with the last act morphing and eventually pretty much being figured out on the fly, after everything else had already been one of the hardest film productions ever. It was pretty much Coppola putting himself on the line, risking everything, and is kinda one of the biggest and most insane independent productions ever. One can scarcely know where to start when talking about how difficult a production it was. The Cinema Tyler YouTube channel has, for the last 5 years or so, been cranking out SPECTATULAR episodes breaking down and analyzing all the parts of the film & production and has, as of today, 27 fantastic episodes of the series of videos about the making of the movie. It's nearly complete and is the greatest "making of" analysis of the making of a movie that I have ever seen. For anybody interested in the production fo the movie, I can't possibly recommend the series of videos enough. It's a heck of a deep dive into all of the insanity of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIGAcW86ZJ0&list=PLGciYgiR4atEUey1J37g4Bjy7rI2wzPi3&index=1

Christopher simeon

Buffy is main show. Angel is a spinoff. Charmed is a show about witches not connected to Buffy at all.

Movies with KL

Thanks for sharing that! Definitely interested in checking it out.

Chris Thom

I keep forgetting about the director's cut. Think that had some extended scenes with the French house? And the Playboy bunnies or something?

Guy Gordon

Redux has the most put back, including the French plantation and more with the bunnies. The Final Cut keeps the French plantation but removes the extra bunnies scene. There's also stuff like Willard stealing Kilgore's surfboard and other extra stuff.

Chris Thom

I can't remember if I ever heard the audio commentary before, or if there even is that extra feature. But I want to.

Clay F

Excellent reaction. I thought you talked a good amount. You slid in strategic comments instead of being chatty that would be a distraction to us and divert you from absorbing the content. I thought Robert Duvall did great -- he was nominated for an Oscar. Agree that the handing out speeding tickets at the Indy 500 is a great analogy. You had already alluded to that sentiment. Also agree that Martin Sheen is an excellent narrator. His son Charlie does a decent job narrating in Platoon (1986) (another Vietnam War movie on the AFI Top 100). The war genre is one of my favorite genres. Apocalypse Now is one of my favorite war movies.

Movies with KL

Thanks for your thoughts, Clay! The war genre is becoming a favourite of mine too and I still have a lot of major movies to see.
