In the same way that sometimes I'll say "Sorry I didn't comment or express much during this reaction." for certain movies, for this one I am saying "I feel like I couldn't shut up or not make faces during this reaction!" 😅

I hope you have a good time with this one! Looking forward to your comments. [Direct link here.]

Ahhhh!!! Yes!!! The time has come! Omg I’m so pumped for this one! Will be watching immediately! LFG!

How do you open a movie? With Philip Seymour Hoffman being the most terrifying motherfucker on the planet. Good shit.

Wednesday season 2...M:I-3....Wednesday S2....MI3... Impossible to decide, mission failed LOL

WastedPo

Oh man. With MI 3, they *finally* understood how to make Ethan Hunt someone you want to root for: By making him an extreme underdog who is perpetually getting his ass kicked. It's kind of the same reason people loved Indiana Jones and John McClane. The Ethan of the first and second movies was a little two suave to really be concerned for. (The opening of the second movie where he's risking his life without a care in the world is the epitome of "why should we be worried about this guy?") But starting in MI 3, Cruise plays the character totally differently. Now we get the sense that he puts himself at risk out of duty, not for fun. He's way more emotionally and physically vulnerable now. I'll also say that this movie's approach to the infamous mask was perfect. The MI mask has always been pretty silly, almost magical. And MI2 abused it so much that it made it impossible to take what you saw on screen seriously. But MI3 at least tried to make it seem like a semi-plausible technology, while also understanding that it's a gimmick best used sparingly. Heads up for the next movie, "GHOST PROTOCOL": It's the first live action movie directed by Brad Bird, who is most known for directing animated movies. ("The Iron Giant" and both "Incredibles" movies for Pixar.) I mention that because I honestly think that sensibility comes through even in live action.

Movies with KL

Yeah, great point! Opening with him terrified sure hit different. And I agree, I definitely preferred the way the mask was used in this movie. I enjoyed that a lot. OH WOW I had no idea Brad Bird ever directed a live-action movie, very cool. The Iron Giant is one of my favourite animated movies of all time. Seen it way too many times to count!

RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He really could pull off any kind of role.

Movies with KL

Absolutely. I still think my favourite is Dusty in Twister, but everything I see of him I just love.

Chris Thom

Some other fantastic, more offbeat performances of his are Magnolia, Capote, and Synechdoche, NY. Capote he won the Best Actor Oscar for.

Turnt SNACO

One of the best MI movies, but they're all great in their own ways from here!

A couple of versions of this movie were developed but didn't work out. David Fincher almost directed the film, but ultimately left the project. Although I avoid linking actors and projects for your sake, I will say that this is actually a reunion for Cruise and Hoffman. They worked together on a highly-acclaimed project for both of them (by a filmmaker whose work you've liked, as well!) and Cruise wanted to work with him again, so he invited Hoffman to come on board. Another "reunion" (although they share no scenes in the other movie and are only seen together out-of-focus here with one of them turned away from the camera) is Hoffman and Billy Crudup as the traitorous Musgrave. You saw both of them in Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous, where Crudup played Stillwater star Russell Hammond. Simon Pegg had only recently made the jump from television to film, with a movie he co-wrote and starred in. The British press, accustomed to their local talent leaving UK's industry behind in order to chase international stardom, asked Pegg if he planned on going to Hollywood. Pegg scoffed, and said, "Well, look, it's not like I'm going to jet off to America to be in Mission: Impossible III." Shortly thereafter, unaware of this, J.J. Abrams got in touch with Pegg to inquire if he wanted to be in Mission: Impossible III. Speaking of Abrams, this was also his big jump from TV to film. Although he contributed to the screenplay for various movies before this, his big break was the television show "Felicity," and this movie marked his feature directorial debut. Since I can't imagine it being on the channel, I will break the actor rule and say that Keri Russell, who plays Lindsey Farris, was Felicity on "Felicity." Abrams also put her in The Rise of Skywalker as Zorii Bliss. It's funny that Aaron Paul says "It's all good, man" in his brief appearance here. Although there are some exceptions, between about 2010 and the present, Cruise's career has moved in the direction of four-quadrant blockbusters with big budgets, which have a tendency to be more about spectacle than drama. However, from the beginning of his career in the early 1980s through to 2010, Cruise worked with a wider range of highly acclaimed filmmakers as he honed his craft. Big-name directors that he worked with include Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ridley and Tony Scott, Ron Howard, Oliver Stone, Stanley Kubrick, Cameron Crowe, Steven Spielberg, and Paul Thomas Anderson. If you liked seeing Cruise flex his acting muscles, there are so many great movies, especially in the '90s, where he gives committed, emotional performances that I can't wait to see your reaction to. Obviously, one doesn't want to become the Tom Cruise channel, but he really has a great filmography. As for the series continuing, I feel like there used to be an unspoken assumption that a third film would be the end of most franchises. Whether or not that was the intent here, I have no idea, but it was just before this movie opened that Cruise went on Oprah and jumped on the couch, and he turned into sort of a celebrity punchline for awhile. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol ended up being a key turning point in terms of him regaining his stock with the audience, and set the stage for where he's at now, which is leaving Mission: Impossible behind, and hopefully returning to the kind of acting he was doing back in the first part of his career (which is of course not a slight against M:I, which I love, I'm just also happy to let things wrap up and see more variety in his projects).

jimmy2k4o .

Thiis movie to me sets the tone of the rest of the series. stylistically 1 and 2 are night and day. but 3 doesn't go for a over the top tone. it's much more conventional, and i think the rest of the movies follow that tone and also, i'm sure you've heard but MI is special because it's the franchise where the films get better with each sequel. MI 1 and 2 as good as they are are very standalone, you could enjoy one completely unaware of the other's existence. but MI 3-8 are much more episodic, they follow on from each other and it's clear they're parts of a bigger story.

Sam

This might be the first time I have commented before actually watching your reaction to a movie.... But, this has given a silver lining to an otherwise cloudy day :)

Tyler Foster

Brad Bird directed two live-action movies: Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011) and Tomorrowland (2015). The latter was a critical and commercial failure (although it has its fans), and Bird returned to animation with The Incredibles 2 (2018). His next movie will be Ray Gunn (2026), something he's apparently been trying to make since before The Iron Giant. He turned down the directing chair for Incredibles 3 in order to make Ray Gunn, although he still wrote the script.

Chris Thom

I do miss the DePalma style a bit. Maybe mostly because of nostalgia.

Movies with KL

Ffffff, I knew that I recognized the name Billy Crudup but I didn't recognize him enough to realize that I knew him from Almost Famous! 😂 It def feels like both JJ and Joss Whedon made their shift from TV to film at the same time. After Mission: Impossible is over I definitely need to check out more of TC's other movies. Thanks Tyler!

Tyler Foster

I figured you wouldn't recognize Crudup. Probably because of his hair! JJ and Whedon definitely followed a similar trajectory, working as screenplay writers for hire and doing script doctoring before hitting it big. In a weird way, Abrams feels like he jumped to movies first even though Whedon beat him to directing his first feature. Since Whedon's directorial debut was Serenity, that ends up feeling less like a "jump to movies" as it was an extension of his own show and he was also therefore an obvious shoo-in for the gig. By the time Whedon made his second feature in 2012 with The Avengers, JJ had already followed up Mission: Impossible with Star Trek (2009) and Super 8 (2012), and was busy making Star Trek Into Darkness (2013).

Miles is Editing

One of my personal favorite MI movies. Best opening, scary ass villian, and the franchise finally getting a groove for the formula.

Chris Thom

Crazy the amount of big franchises JJ has been a major part of since this. This was a major bump in his career.

Chris Thom

My first thought was that he was a fan of the Olympic break dancer. Lol

Tyler Foster

Is Ghost Protocol posted yet? ;)

Movies with KL

If you can time travel to sometime next week, then yes.

Nathan Jasper

Post-reaction, I anticipated you would love this one, it basically reset the series and gave us a new direction and holy shit did they launch us right into it! My only criticism is in the final fight with Davian - when he picks up the gun, he stands at the ready looking down at the gun waiting on Tom. Once you notice it you can tell it's Philip getting ready for the tackle. Davien would have and should have had that gun cocked and been on his way to Julia not just standing there bracing for impact you know? Small criticism in an otherwise perfect film.

Movies with KL

Ahh yeah that's a fair one. But yes overall awesome movie! Had so much fun.

Movies with KL

You probably missed me saying this in my review of the first movie, but I did specifically say that I didn't want to be spoiled on whether or not these movies were connected. I probably should have made that clearer in the actual post instead of only saying it in the video. Anyway, not a big deal, I will just have to disclose that I know this now in the intro for Ghost Protocol. Please be mindful of spoilers moving forward. ❤️

Onno Smits

I really like what he did within The Hunger Games. Very intricate performance of a small role.

Onno Smits

I completely agree with your ranking of the three MI movies so far. Looking forward to more! A small thing no one else has mentioned yet that I quite enjoy about this film: During the rescue of agent Lindsey Farris at the start of the movie, when she asks Ethan to toss her a pistol; The plan for filming that was to have that be a CGI shot. They asked to film a plate where Tom Cruise just tosses the gun to Keri Russel, she pretends to catch it and shoot, and then they have that as reference for when they do the CGI shot. They nail it on the first take! She actually catches it perfectly with the finger on the trigger and everything, and follows through acting and completing the shot. Cut, print, saves them tens of thousands of dollars in post-production. Keri has gone on record saying she has terrible hand-eye coordination and they could've done that shot a thousand more times and she would've fumbled every time. Keri Russel and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (the Irish IMF team member) headline in a movie together called "August Rush" (2007), with Robin Williams in a supporting role, that I have really fond memories of. One to add to your long list of suggestions! 😅

Sam

I did

jimmy2k4o .

I’m very sorry. I’m sure with the tone of ghost protocol that of all the three MI movies, GP is closest to 3. There are still stark differences. As there are with all the MI movies. Perhaps a small part of me thinking this is because the first time we get confirmation that these films are definitely connected, is in ghost protocol when they reference Julia. So unlike the previous movies this movie acknowledges the previous one and tries to explain what happened inbetween. It can’t be mistaken for an attempt at soft rebooting the series.

Movies with KL

You left this comment before I watched Ghost Protocol though.

jimmy2k4o .

Yes I know I left it before ghost protocol, I’m not excusing the mistake just trying to say that they get better from here is all….. and when I said the first comment I mean stuff like Julia being addressed or benji showing up again. Comparatively small stuff Nothing big about plot or anything. But still it’s still a spoiler, I’m sorry 😞. I remember well any time I’ve accidentally spoiled something. I hate it. But that’s all I was talking about, and they’ve been outed, so I haven’t spoiled anything else.
