Sorry for posting this, then deleting it right away. Perry noticed that I didn't lower my music audio in the review section, thank you. Always grateful for those of you who choose to watch the review first, since you catch those kind of things that I end up forgetting to do. (Still don't know how I do at this point, but oh well.)

Anyway I totally forgot what I said about this in the first post aside from this is what won the 80s Comedy poll, so all I'll say right now is enjoy! Looking forward to your comments. [Direct link here.]

Peter Graves, who plays Captain Clarence Oveur, is the actor who originally played IMF leader Jim Phelps on the original "Mission: Impossible" TV show. He didn't like the idea that his character would become a turncoat, so he declined to reprise the role in the first movie and the character was recast with Jon Voight. I'm waiting for a concert to start, so I can't watch yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing if you caught the one-line appearance by a future TV legend...

I just want to tell you good luck, we're all counting on you

Favorite fun movie fact: The lady who keeps trying to put on her makeup is the mother to 2 of the directors. She actually makes a cameo in other movies they have directed.

Regarding the Naked Gun, I recently watched all 3 of them for the first time in preparation for the new movie. They are definitely worth checking out, but in my opinion the TV show that preceded them and that the movies were based on, “Police Squad” is better than the movies. It’s a fairly short series, (six episodes) that has a lot of “Airplane” style-humor.

This movie is definitely a comedy classic. Loved the reaction. My favorite jokes were the guy in the cab and the we're counting on you joke.

In addition to the Jaws parody, there are a couple other movie spoofs in this. Many notice that the dance scene where Ted and Elaine meet is a spoof of Saturday Night Fever (1977), but I think almost nobody these days recognizes the beach scene where they're being rocked by the waves as a riff on From Here to Eternity (1953), and even fewer know that Leslie Nielsen's final inspiring speech is spoofing a baseball movie called Knute Rockne, All American (1940) -- not that knowing matters. Also, the entire movie is a scene-for-scene remake of the forgotten 1957 film Zero Hour. At this point, I think Airplane! is probably significantly more famous than Zero Hour!, and for good reason, as it's an incredibly boring movie. Still, entire scenes and some of the dialogue are straight lifts. Almost all of the cast members, including Peter Graves, Leslie Nielsen, Lloyd Bridges (Jeff Bridges' father), and Robert Stack were all famous as serious actors. Bridges kept asking about his character, and Stack had to tell him: "Lloyd, we are the joke." The two voice-over announcers at the airport were the actual LAX announcers, who were married to one another. The dialogue about abortion was taken from a novel by the same guy who wrote the script for Zero Hour!. You are correct about the sound of the plane: the filmmakers intentionally put in the sound of a propeller plane for the exterior shots. The "He thinks he's Ethel Merman" joke is just literal: that is a cameo by the famous singer Ethel Merman. The "Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home" was part of a then-famous TV commercial for coffee. The woman who plays that character in the movie is actually the same woman from the commercial, Lee Bryant, and the directors had no idea when they cast her. That is James Hong as the Japanese soldier. Hong's first credit is from 1954 and he has over 450 credits in film and television. I liked that Greta Gerwig seemed to have slipped two Airplane! references into Barbie. When she first tries to drink, she pours water on herself just like Ted, and later when she's arguing with Ken, he puts a second pair of sunglasses on over the ones he's already wearing. Looks like I misremembered, Jonathan Banks has more than one line! (I only remembered the Radar Range bit.) There is a sequel to this, which some people like. Main thing worth knowing is that the writing/directing team of Jim Abrahams and David and Jerry Zucker did not come back for it, and in fact have stated they have never even seen it.

The woman who offers to interpret ‘Jive’ is the TV mother in the sitcom ‘Leave it to Beaver’ .. the joke is that such a wholesome family figure is of course familiar with speaking ‘jive’..

On August 1st.. the movie ‘Police Squad’ (2025) opened in theatres with Liam Neeson now playing the role of Detective Frank Drebin.

Leslie Neilson (the doctor) was a serious actor who feared his career had been reduced to grandfather roles.. when offed this comedy part.. jump started his career in an entirely different comedic direction with the ‘Naked Gun’ movies.. The producers originally thought of Dom Deloise for the doctor role.. you might remember him from ‘Smokey and the Bandit’

RegalEagle

Oops.. if you haven’t seen the ‘Naked Gun’ movies.. Frank Drebin is Leslie Nelson’s character..

I set up to watch your review. it's kind of odd, I started up this page, and I got a double sound coming out of it, which was odd, as the video was paused, but one of the soundtracks was still making noise. This could be a problem with my computer. I did click on the direct link, and there were no problems with that, but when I clicked back to this page there wasn't a problem with the double sound, one which pauses when you pause the video. I've always loved this movie, and I hope you do as well. Looking forward to enjoying you reaction tonight.

If you had two tabs open, one on YouTube and this post here on Patreon, it's possible that both videos were playing at the same time. Enjoy the reaction!

Maybe. Police Squad was an 80's TV show that the network never really understood. The Airplane! Producers asked for the rights to the series, and the network gave it to them thinking that it wouldn't go anywhere. Later the Network was asked "Why did you cancel the series after only 6 episodes?" The Answer? "We thought the jokes came to fast for our viewers to keep up." The producers used the material from Police Squad to make The Naked Gun Movies. Check out Police Squad! it's a very funny show. Lots of word play, and great gags! You finally caught on to many things, but the one that I noticed you didn't seem to react to was Striker saying, "It's an entirely different kind of flying, All together." Where the blonde stewardess and Leslie Neilson repeat that back to him. And before you watch The Naked Gun, please watch Airplane II. The word play in that is brilliant as well. And I did enjoy your reaction.

One other thing, the John Candy Documentary will be played next month at the Calgary international Film Festival. I hope you enjoy it.
