Face/Off (1997) Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Comments

Christopher simeon

Don't remember this movie but I know I watched it and it involves someone's face coming off lol.

Jonah D Jackson

This movie is absolutely bonkers. My friends and I were huge John Woo fans and actually waited in line to see this one when it came out. I cannot wait for this reaction.

RichieRich

Wild movie in the best way. Crazy plot, sketchy science, over acting, chases on planes cars AND boats. A very fun movie and one of my fav action movies.

Tyler Foster

Glad you enjoyed it. I worried a little that maybe the fact that M:I-2 was not a great John Woo experience for you would color how you reacted to this but I shouldn't have. The doves are a John Woo signature. He loves doves, he puts doves in every movie. Originally, the script was set in the future, which sort of explains the absurd face-swapping technology and the magnetic boot prison. Woo thought it would be easier for the audiences to relate to the characters if it were set in present day, so he had it changed. Cage and Travolta spent a few weeks working on their characters together, and settled on certain things they could both do to make the performances more consistent. Cage almost turned the movie down as he didn't want to play a bad guy, but changed his mind when he was told he'd spend most of the movie playing the hero. Proposed castings during the movie's development stages included: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone Michael Douglas and Harrison Ford (Douglas ended up producing the movie) Bruce Willis and Alec Baldwin Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal Denzel Washington and Wesley Snipes Robert De Niro and Al Pacino Back in 2023, writer/director Adam Wingard was developing a script for a sequel to Face/Off, which both Travolta and Cage would have returned for. Wingard hasn't updated on the project in awhile, which went on hold due to the WGA strike, but I'd be interested in hearing what they came up with. Last but not least, while I won't reveal his casting by telling you the title, there is one other over-the-top, iconic Nicolas Cage '90s action classic to complete the triptych alongside Face/Off and Con Air...

I think I already know that one.. The Rock? 😉 Def need to check it out one day.

Rat MacKay

I love The Rock and Con Air both in an almost unhealthy way. I could probably quote both from start to finish, but this one? Meh. I really don't like Travolta, so makes it hard to enjoy fully.

Tyler Foster

Oh, I almost forgot: you were correct about the siblings. The two actors involved, Nick Cassavetes and Gina Gershon, improvised the weird brother-sister kiss just to make their characters creepier.

Death Lego

Totally high octane ridiculousness. Gotta love it. Another one to consider for the future, is Broken Arrow with Christian Slater and John Travolta.

Saw this at a way too young age of 10 but it’s one of those quintessential 90’s movies that everyone should see at least once. Nic Cage being Nic Cage is always a treat. Great reaction and I’m glad you enjoyed it.
