Happy Friday movie lovers! I have to apologize - this week has been a lot on the personal side of my life, so I wanted to make a change in the schedule with the scary movies. I'm releasing The Fly for the second scary movie instead of IT Chapter Two this week. Thanks to those of you who voted for this in the Scaretober Poll!

Man, this movie/story was way more heartbreaking than scary/creepy? 😅 Yeah, it was gross. I knew it would be that going in. But damn, I sure wasn't expecting to have all kinds of emotions and feels inside me. I am pretty sure this is my favourite performance of Jeff Goldblum now. He really acted his... fingernails off. 😉

I think watching The Thing before this one set me up for what to expect with 1980s grotesque visuals and practical work - oh, the practical work!

Anyway, please enjoy this reaction. 😊 Looking forward to discussing it below. The edited version will appear on YouTube in a couple of weeks. [Direct link here.]

Can't wait to watch this later. Now that you have been introduced to David Cronenberg, please put his Scanners (1981) on your list.

You don't necessarily have to do it for the channel, but the original Fly from 1958 is a fun watch. Aside from the delicious voice of Vincent Price (swoon), the original is more mysterious and chilling than scary, but that end scene still lives rent-free in my head.

I'll def want to check it out someday! Yeah, probably not for a reaction but down to check it out on my own time.

David Cronenberg's son, Brandon, is also a horror director and has done two of my favorite films of the decade, POSSESSOR (2020) and INFINITY POOL (2023). Both have wild concepts, but they go...far. Definitely not for everyone.

No matter how many times I've seen this movie, I always ball like a baby at the end. Seth was such a sweet, charismatic, and yeah, a little awkward, but as the Fly took over, I felt like giving him such a hug, regardless of what limbs fell off in the process.

No thank you. I’ve seen this movie twice before. This isn’t for me. I honestly prefer the original black & white that I saw at too young an age and need to revisit. Glad you made it through and got something out of it.

Just watched this over on Popcorn in Bed, so I'm going to give this reaction a bit before I watch again. Even so...love this movie. Practical effects...yes! Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis...yes! David Cronenberg's disturbing visual style...fuck yes! imploded baboon guts...yes! One of the greatest remakes of all time (just slightly behind The Thing, at least for me).

Will have to wait to watch this but you may have noticed the Brooksfilms credit at the beginning. Much like David Lynch's The Elephant Man (1980), this was produced by Mel Brooks. I guess he has some interest in horror, and also in helping filmmakers like Lynch and Cronenberg navigate the studio system, which can easily crush the visions of more unconventional filmmakers. There is a famous story of Brooks backing up Lynch on The Elephant Man: when the film was completed, it was shown to some of the investors, who made the suggestion that some of Lynch's more surreal moments ought to be cut out of the movie. Brooks's reply: "We are involved in a business venture. We screened the film for you, to bring you up to date as to the status of that venture. Do not misconstrue this as our soliciting the input of raging primitives." As Brooks had a reputation for being a comedy director, he asked for his actual name to be left out of the credits of the movie, so that people didn't think they were going to see something funny.

Check out Adam Resurrected for a Jeff Goldblum performance in the opposite direction, but just as magnificent!

This movie finally made me understand why Ian Malcolm had such a problem with the biological experiments happening in Jurassic Park
