It feels fab to return to the adventures of The Man With No Name. Clint Eastwood is just too good. Ennio Morricone's score is just so epic! I'm excited to discuss this one with you all. Thank you so much for watching with me. 🥰

A remake (unofficially) of Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo, which is itself an homage to many of the hard-boiled American noir novels of the 1920's and 1930's, perhaps most specifically Dashiell Hammett's Red Harvest, this movie kicked off the Spaghetti Western craze (at least in America) and made Clint Eastwood a star. The story itself (almost an exact replica of Yojimbo, swapping out samurai for cowboys) has been retold many times, including the not-so-great Last Man Standing (starring Bruce Willis), the original Django by Sergio Corbucci (a very loose adaptation), and a few others, most of which are silly, have bad production value, or just don't work. This one works because: a) Sergio Leone was a goddamn master who brought his own visual flair and style to the flick, b) Clint Eastwood is perfect in the role, and c) everybody involved seemed to understand the necessities of the project. It's pure cowboy-noir fable, and it's holy-shit spectacular. I think most people go for The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly as their favorite spaghetti western--and it's a damn good movie; but, this one is still my favorite. And now I'm done rambling. Gooooooooooooooooooooood shit.

This is a perfect trilogy. Clint Eastwood is possibly the coolest man alive (he's still alive, right?). And I'm going to reiterate the other chap in the comments that GBU is a lot of people's favorite, but I prefer this one and I prefer the score for A few Dollars More. Also, if you would like to watch a super low budget British western by first time director Edgar Wright (yep, that one), I highly recommend A Fistful of Fingers. It's relatively difficult to find (it might be on YouTube in North America), but it was a theatrical release, short, funny, and worth a watch.

Toho ultimately sued over the fact that this was obviously a remake of Yojimbo, and as a result, Kurosawa got 15% of the global profits from the film and the rights to release it in Japan, where he pointedly retitled it The Return of Yojimbo. He later said he made significantly more from A Fistful of Dollars than the original movie. Another famous example of this is famous western The Magnificent Seven (1960), which is based on Seven Samurai. Decades later, Clint Eastwood would direct the Academy Award-winning western Unforgiven (1992). In a fun bit of turnabout, in 2013, Unforgiven was remade in Japan (albeit by a Korean director) as a samurai film instead of a Western.
