I miss River Phoenix. I think Leonardo Di Caprio got a career boost when he passed, looking and acting so similar. I have a pretty long story about River Phoenix from when I was in the 9th grade and my family went to the same campground vacation spot as his family. He was with his parents and siblings, right after he finished filming Stand By Me. My friend and I spent several hours running around resort grounds with him. Sneaking off to smoke cigarettes.

So glad you enjoyed it! So I have a few things to share along with this that adds to some of the weight behind it. River's agent didn't want him to do this film. But Keanu believed in it and wanted so badly to do this with River that he drove on his motorcycle from Canada to Florida to hand deliver the script to him. AND to add to that, River rewrote the campfire scene. That whole brillaint discussion of "I can have sex with men for money but a guy can't love a guy... but I love you Mike" - that was all River, straight from the soul. His narcolepsy acting was based on the novel Silas Marner where the character had seizures and a crime would happen while he was having the seizure. River also didn't do any reading or research for street hustlers because he basically lived it. Living with a group (or cult depending on how you look at it) and being introduced to drugs at a young age through that group, living on nothing, basically that nomad life... he had all the experience he needed. I may think of something else by the time it's posted but yeah this is a film that is kind of like the flipside of The Children's Hour. On one hand you have two women forbidden to be together by the social standards of the time and the other hand you have two men who are afraid to be together because love is transactional and Scott didn't want to "buy" his friend. It was definitely risky for its time. Hell, there were boycotts against Brokeback Mountain a decade later. There's always going to be some group that will hate something honest.

So good Nathan thank you for this

I've been curious about this one for so long. It was mentioned a lot after River passed at the Viper Room in the early nineties. There's an interesting doc on Hulu about that bar and Johnny Depp's connection to it, and that overdose that almost destroyed it. Or maybe it did end up closing. Don't quite remember.

That's a fun memory. He seemed like a really sweet kid. Just going off of what I've seen in interviews and docs and a few of his movies. He was set to be a big deal in the movie industry, I think.

Goddamn, this movie was incredible. So glad I didn't know what to expect. That campfire scene with Mike and Scott was by far one of the best scenes I've ever seen. We really lost someone special in River. What a performance from both him and Keanu Reminded me a lot of me and this guy friend I had a crush on when I was a teen. I never told him because I was pretty terrified how he'd respond (and I knew I was not his "type"). We kinda drifted apart over time, hardly seeing each other in the last couple years of high school, but I do still think about him sometimes, wonder what he's doing. ...anyway, spilling my guts over here. Great movie. 10/10. Awesome pick, Nate

Oh that's right about the cult. I keep forgetting that Joaquin and River grew up together and had a lot of the same experiences. J was even there when he passed.

Glad you enjoyed it! It's natural to think of people, think of the what ifs and what could have beens. I hope this movie gave you some peace of mind.

It gave me the feels, that's for sure. I wasn't crying or anything, but damn, those memories and feelings came at me like I was deer in headlights during the campfire scene. Definitely one of the best movies I've seen so far this year.
