Thank you to Buster for the unique request on my Reactr page. This is a reaction to the pilot episode of the series, Miami Vice, which is called Brother's Keeper. It was requested because it was made like a movie and with a budget like a movie. It can definitely be watched on its own without continuing through the series as I believe this is what inspired the series in the first place. This even released on VHS as "Miami Vice: The Movie".

Amazon Prime here in Canada has the episode split into two parts, so this reaction reflects that. Buster said that it may appear as one continuous video online on Prime in different countries or on other streaming platforms. For syncing purposes, I let the credits of the first part roll right to the very end of the video. Then in the second part, there is syncing time at the very beginning of the episode, but since this part had the TV intro/opening credits included, I provided 15 seconds of syncing time after that in case this was left out of the combined version. I just want to ensure that however you're watching along, you can make sure your copy is lined up with mine!

I'm looking forward to your thoughts on this one! I have a feeling there might be many of you that haven't watched the series at all and can enjoy a first watch to this with me. Let's talk about it!

PS. I mentioned this in the schedule post, but I'll re-iterate here that this reaction doesn't mean that I'm now accepting requests to react to pilot episodes of TV series, even if there is no expectation to continue with it. I decided to go ahead with this one precisely because of the fact that it was made like a movie and can hold pretty well on its own as one.

Brother's Keeper: Miami Vice (1984) [Pilot] | Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

The box copy on the back of the box appears to be marketing spin. While the first two episodes did air as a movie-length premiere, they were always intended as the first two episodes of the show, and there was no meaningful gap between the first two and third episodes, which aired on September 16th and September 28th, 1984, respectively. I have no idea how widespread this phenomenon was, but this is not the only television pilot I've heard of being repurposed into a movie. If you ever react to "Twin Peaks," the pilot episode should run 1:34:03. However, in other countries, since the show wasn't going to air internationally, the pilot was re-edited to conclude the entire show's story in a single, movie-length episode. This alternate international cut was released overseas as a film and runs 1:52:55. Much of the show is built around a mystery, and that mystery is solved in this other version (and I've never watched it, so I don't know how and when it was created and what that version of the pilot's answer to the mystery is -- for all I know, it's not the same as the full show!). "Miami Vice" was created by Anthony Yerkovich, who worked on a previous popular crime show called "Hill Street Blues." However, Yerkovich ceded control after only 8 episodes to the other executive producer, future Heat director Michael Mann. These days, I'd say the show is more associated with Mann than anyone, who helped bring on notable guest directors and actors. In 2006, Mann returned to Miami Vice with a film version, which updates the setting to the present day and cast new stars as Crockett and Tubbs. It received mixed reception upon release, especially when it came to the divide between fans of the show, which clearly gets so much of its DNA from the 1980s, and fans of Mann's cutting-edge aesthetic, as he had by then switched to using digital cameras in order to shoot more material and because he liked the stylized look it created. In the years since, though, it has built up a massive cult following and is a huge favorite now on "Film Twitter." FWIW, although I recently got the Blu-ray set of the show for very cheap, so far I have only seen this pilot and the movie, and I liked both (I preferred the movie, but I think I'll like the pilot more once I see it again; on first viewing I was surprised by how different it was from the film). Just a few months ago, a new Miami Vice movie was announced, and right from the start the filmmakers have made it clear they're returning to the aesthetic of the original show, with the new movie being titled Miami Vice '85. Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) is directing and it has two big-name stars locked in for the leads. I'm interested to see how it turns out next year.

I had the full length hour-and-a-half version in my set and it seems there were a few moments that are extended in that version. The intro is longer, the conversation in the car between Sonny and Bail Organa (LOL) on the way to the parking garage, a longer shot of Sonny looking through the diner window, etc. So there were a few sync issues for me because of that but nothing a little pause-and-unpause couldn't fix. I could've just switched over to Amazon Prime and made it easy on myself but, eh, keeps me on my toes lol This was a fun reaction! It's been a while since I've actually went through Miami Vice and this brought back a lot of great memories of watching cop shows and westerns with my grandpa.

The pilot of the original Battlestar Galactica was in movie form as well, though admittedly I don't know if it started as a movie first then became a series or if the movie was made post-series.

Never missed this show. I had similar fit as Crockett but I couldn’t wear shoes with no socks, my feet would stink lol. The 80s night life was amazing. You could go to night clubs and just enjoying dancing and meeting new people. I believe u would having loved the 80s. I might be biases since that’s where I’m from. Hope u decide to watch the rest of episodes, they have great new characters and the guest actors were amazing 🤩
