DW DXD Remastered Chapter 20 Sakura’s Day Out (Patreon)
Content
22nd of November, Saturday, Kuoh Town
The crisp November air carried the gentle rustling of fallen leaves, dancing across the pavement as Issei Hyoudou walked through Kuoh’s bustling streets. The town was bustling with life as couples walked hand-in-hand through the shopping districts, children darted between arcade entrances with rhythmic sounds echoing behind them, and office workers hurried toward the station, eager to trade their suits for the warmth of home.
Issei, bundled in a sturdy brown coat, navigated the crowd with practiced ease, holding Sakura snuggled comfortably in his arms. The little girl was a bundle of colors as she was dressed in a warm red coat and matching mittens, kicking her legs excitedly, as her purple eyes were wide and sparkling as they reflected the signs and colorful storefronts.
"Waaah~! Everything looks so different from home!" Sakura chirped, her head swiveling to take in a towering digital billboard. "Papa, look! That giant TV is bigger than our whole house!"
Issei chuckled, shifting her slightly to give her a better view. "Yeah, well, welcome to my town, kiddo. Hopefully it’s not too loud for you."
Walking beside them, Misuki, Tamamo, and Yuuka formed a striking trio that drew more than a few curious glances from passersby.
Misuki’s gaze was calm and analytical. Unlike the others, she wasn't looking at the flashy displays; she was observing the flow of foot traffic and the density of the commercial district with a sharp, business-minded focus. "The infrastructure here is remarkably efficient for a town of this size," Misuki noted, her breath hitching in the cool air like a faint mist. "The commercial zone is dense, yet it maintains a welcoming atmosphere. It’s an ideal environment for a long-term investment."
"You really never lost your mind for business did you, mom?" Yuuka remarked, stuffing her hands deep into her coat pockets. She looked around with mild curiosity, though she seemed more interested in a nearby bookstore. "It’s a nice enough place, I guess. A little too crowded for my taste, but at least the food smells good. I’ve seen three different crepe stands in the last two blocks."
"Ufufu~ That’s because this town is just teeming with youthful energy, Yuuka-chan!" Tamamo giggled, her eyes dancing with mischievous amusement as she watched a flustered high school boy try to win a plushie for his girlfriend in a nearby game center. "Look at all these darling couples! The air is simply thick with the scent of budding romance. I can’t help but admire it." But then a mischievous smile crossed her face as she leaned closer to Issei, her shoulder brushing his. "Though, of course, none of these boys have half the charm of my Darling."
Issei felt his cheeks heat up, partially from the cold and partially from the Tamamo’s proximity.
The group continued through the streets, passing cozy cafes where the scent of roasted coffee beans drifted through open doors, and groups of teenagers chatting loudly about the latest video games, everything about Kuoh had a sense of liveliness.
But this wasn't just a sightseeing trip, they were also on a mission that was important for Misuki.
Following Sherri’s directions, they were heading to a particular building—one that Misuki had requested for Sherri to locate for her.
"Sherri," Misuki asked. "Are we approaching the place I requested?"
A soft hum resonated from the Dimensional Watch on Issei’s wrist. “Affirmative, Misuki. Proceed two hundred meters forward and take a left at the intersection. The target building is a prime commercial property currently listed for long-term lease.”
Misuki nodded, her expression joyful with excitement. "Good."
Issei looked at Sakura, who was now trying to catch a stray leaf in her mitten. "You ready to see where we're going, Sakura?"
"Mhm!" She nodded vigorously. "If it's for Aunt Misuki, it's gonna be super cool!"
—--------------------------------------
After a few more turns, the group finally arrived at their destination: a modest two-story building tucked between a bustling shopping street and a quieter residential area. It wasn’t fancy, nor was it in perfect condition, but it had potential.
Misuki came to a stop, arms crossed as she surveyed the property with a sharp, business-oriented gaze.
"So, this is the place?" Yuuka asked, tilting her head as she took in the slightly peeling paint and the dusty windows. "It looks like it’s been ignored for a decade. Are you sure about this, Mom? It’s a bit of a fixer-upper, even for you."
Misuki nodded firmly, her eyes never leaving the structure. "Sherri found it for me. It’s really cheap because of the damages, but the location is great. It has high traffic from the shops, but enough distance for a calm atmosphere. "
Issei stepped forward, rubbing his chin as he kicked at a loose stone near the foundation. "Looks… sturdy, I guess? But it’s definitely going to need more than just a mop and a bucket of paint.”
Tamamo hummed thoughtfully, circling a nearby pillar with a graceful stride. "Ara~! But with the right touches, it could be quite charming indeed. If you’d like, Misuki-san, I can use some simple spells to clean the place up a bit and then place a few subtle enchantments once the physical labor is done. Something to make the air feel more accommodating and keep the customers lingering just a little longer."
Misuki ran her fingers along the wooden frame, noting the texture of the worn exterior. "Yes, some maintenance is needed, but it’s not beyond repair. And thank you, dear, those enchantments would be a wonderful edge to have." Her eyes then narrowed slightly in thought as she began mentally mapping out the floor plan. "Now, I just need the right gimmick to sell, but at least I have a foundation to work with."
She then tapped her temple as she was deep in thought before she leaned toward Issei’s arm. "Sherri, can you locate a reliable group of workers to handle renovations?"
A soft, calm voice responded from the dimensional watch. "Understood, Hana-san. I shall cross-reference local contractors with high efficiency ratings. I will have a shortlist and all necessary arrangements ready as soon as we return home."
Misuki smiled slightly, a rare look of pure satisfaction crossing her face. "Good. That saves me a significant amount of trouble."
Yuuka smirked, keeping her hands tucked in her pockets. "You work fast, Mom. You haven't even signed the papers and you're already hiring a crew."
Misuki shrugged, her expression returning to its usual calm. "Efficiency is the key to success." Satisfied, she took a step back, looking at the building one last time with a calculating gaze.
For the first time since arriving, it felt like they had taken a step toward building something stable for them to live by.
—-----------------------------------------------------
With business matters settled, the group transitioned into sightseeing. They soon stopped by local street vendors where Tamamo was the first to stop, her eyes sparkling as she held a skewer of sweet dango.
"Mmm, the glaze is divine! Darling, you must try a piece," Tamamo insisted, holding the stick toward Issei’s face.
Yuuka, who claimed she didn’t want anything, was currently proving otherwise. Every time Issei looked away to check on Sakura, Yuuka would lean in and casually tear a piece off his fish-shaped taiyaki.
Issei, holding Sakura on his shoulders, finally noticed the rapid disappearance of his snack. He squinted suspiciously at the black-haired girl beside him. "...Are you seriously eating my taiyaki after saying you didn't want one?"
Yuuka, caught mid-chew with a flake of crust on her lip, blinked at him with wide, feigned innocence. "Huh? I have no idea what you’re talking about."
"So the crust on your lips came from nowhere?" Issei retorted, though he simply sighed and decided to allow it.
Above them, Sakura happily munched on a small anpan while swinging her legs against Issei’s chest. "It’s yummy, Papa!" She chirped, crumbs decorating her chin.
Tamamo, noticing Yuuka’s subtle "sharing" of Issei’s food, decided it was time to reclaim her territory as she stepped in and locked her arm firmly with Issei’s left side. But not to be outdone, Yuuka’s competitive streak flared instantly, and she latched onto his right arm.
The air between the two women crackled with static as they engaged in a silent battle for Issei’s attention. To any bystander, they looked like a lucky young man out with two beautiful companions. But for Issei, it felt like being the rope in a very intense game of tug-of-war.
Tamamo, pressing closer, let out a soft giggle, her voice dripping with mischief. "Ara! Walking together like this makes us look like a true family, doesn’t it, darling?" She gently squeezed his arm, pressing against him just a little more as her eyes darted toward Yuuka with a triumphant glint.
Yuuka’s eye twitched, and her grip tightened until Issei let out a small squeak. "Tch. Don't get ahead of yourself, fox. I’m the official 'girlfriend' in the public's eyes, so obviously, I get priority." She then pulled him slightly toward her side, trying to create distance between him and Tamamo.
Tamamo tilted her head, her smile never faltering. "Fufufu! And what am I in your little hierarchy then, Yuuka-chan? Surely a 'wife' trumps a 'girlfriend' in any world?"
Yuuka’s smile sharpened into something dangerous. "In this world? You're an annoyance. A persistent annoyance."
Tamamo gasped theatrically, her free hand fluttering to her chest. "Oh my! How cruel! My heart is practically breaking! Does that mean you wish for me to let go and leave you two alone?"
Yuuka didn't hesitate. "Yes. Preferably to another country."
Tamamo’s grip didn't budge an inch. "Then I shall stay right here! A wife must support her husband through all trials, especially the grumpy ones."
Issei, trapped in the center of the mounting pressure, let out a long, suffering sigh that seemed to drain his very soul. "Can you two not start this in public?"
But it was far too late as a group of Kuoh Academy girls passing by had already spotted him, and their eyes widened in unison and the whispering started.
"Wait… is that actually Hyoudou?" One girl hissed, clutching her friend's arm.
"He’s walking with three gorgeous women… while carrying a kid on his shoulders?!" Another whispered back, her voice rising in disbelief.
"Don’t tell me the rumors were true… does he already have a secret family at sixteen?!”
"I heard he’s a high-level criminal!" A third chimed in, looking scandalized. “Maybe this is his secret family?!"
“And here I thought he was just a harmless, scrawny pervert!"
Meanwhile the men who caught sight of the scene were experiencing a different kind of suffering as their faces twisted with a mix of envy and bafflement.
"He’s… he’s got two of them?" One guy muttered, his voice cracking.
"Two?! AND A KID?! That bastard is living a dream we didn't even know was possible!"
"I don’t understand how… What is his secret?!"
"Look at how they’re clinging to him," Another added, shaking his head in defeat. "That man is an absolute legend."
Issei gritted his teeth, the heat in his face reaching a boiling point as he dragged his hands down his face. "Why? Why does the universe keep doing this to me?" he moaned.
Tamamo, completely ignoring his suffering, as she giggled behind her sleeve, her eyes sparkling with delight. "Ufufu~! Word spreads fast in a small town, doesn’t it, darling? It’s almost like we’re celebrities!"
Yuuka, equally amused by the chaos, smirked smugly as she tightened her hold on his arm. "At this rate, by tomorrow morning, the whole town will believe you’ve got a dozen wives and a private island. Honestly you should be thanking us for the reputation boost."
Issei let out a hollow groan. "I can literally hear them inventing new chapters of my life as I walk," he said, his shoulders slumping in total defeat. "I just hope this doesn’t create even more ridiculous rumors when I get back to school…"
His prayer was ignored by the heavens as the rumors had already taken on a life of their own, mutating and growing with every step he took through the streets of Kuoh.
————————
Despite the chaos of the day, there was still one last stop: Sakura’s future school. The small elementary school building stood nestled between tall trees, their red and gold leaves drifting lazily in the cool autumn breeze.
As they approached the front gates, Issei gently set Sakura down, letting her stand on her own two feet before her soon-to-be school. He smiled, ruffling her hair to ease the tension. "Alright, kiddo. This is the place. This is where you’ll be learning and making friends soon."
Sakura stared up at the building, her small hands gripping the hem of her coat until her knuckles turned white. Her purple eyes scanned the playground and the colorful windows, taking in every detail. She didn’t speak right away; instead, she simply gave a nervous, tiny nod. It was a quiet, soft acceptance of what was to come.
Tamamo knelt beside her, brushing a few strands of hair away from her face with a touch as light as a feather. "Are you nervous, little one~?" She asked, her golden eyes warm and radiating a motherly comfort. "There's nothing to fear. You'll be the smartest little blossom in the garden."
Sakura lowered her gaze, her fingers tightening slightly on her coat. Then, in a small but steady voice, she spoke. "…No. Papa and Mama said I gotta learn, so… I’ll do it. I want to be a big girl for everyone." Her tone was quiet, but underlaid with a surprising spark of determination.
Yuuka, standing with her arms crossed, arched an eyebrow and let out a huff that might have been a hidden laugh. "Good attitude. Better than Issei’s, at least."
Misuki, ever practical, stepped forward and adjusted Sakura’s collar, nodding approvingly. "She will begin on the 1st of December. That gives us exactly eleven days to prepare her properly with a uniform, supplies, and the basics. We won't have a child of our house looking anything less than prepared."
Issei patted Sakura’s head, his grin returning. "You’ll do great, kiddo. Just, uh… try not to start any trouble, okay? Keep it low-key."
Sakura shifted slightly, her hands still clinging to her coat. Then, in a tiny, fragile whisper, she looked up at him. "Even if… they’re mean to me?"
The humor drained from Issei’s face as his smile softened into something more protective. He then crouched down to her level, looking her straight in the eye, his voice gentle but firm. "Especially if they’re mean. You don't have to be like them. But if anyone does mess with you, you tell the teacher immediately, okay? And then you tell me. I've got your back, always."
Sakura lowered her head slightly, processing his words. Then, slowly and with a bit more strength, she nodded.
Yuuka, watching the exchange with a softened gaze she tried to hide, smirked slightly and nudged Issei with her elbow. "Look at her trying to be brave. She’s really taking after you, huh? Stubborn and surprisingly earnest when it counts."
Issei sighed, standing up and brushing the dust off his knees. "Let’s just hope she doesn't inherit my bad habits along with the stubbornness."
Tamamo giggled behind her sleeve, her golden eyes shimmering with affection. "Fufufu! But isn’t she just perfect exactly as she is? A little blossom growing stronger every day."
Sakura peeked up at Tamamo, blinking quietly as she processed the words and after a brief moment of contemplation, she nodded with a small, radiant smile, clearly happy from Mama Tamamo’s compliment.
"Fufu! Such an honest and sweet child! My heart simply melts!" Tamamo sang, looking ready to scoop the girl up into another hug.
Sakura glanced at Issei, then reached out tentatively, her tiny fingers tugging at his sleeve to get his attention.
Issei looked down at her, his expression softening instantly. "What’s up, kiddo? Did you see a cool bug or something?"
Sakura hesitated for a moment, her gaze drifting toward the colorful shop windows down the street. Then, in a soft, hopeful voice, she asked, "…Can we go somewhere fun? Just for a little bit?" Her tiny hands tightened on his sleeve, her expression uncertain, as if worried that she was asking for too much.
Issei felt his chest tighten with a pang of guilt and affection. 'This kid… she really didn’t ask for much back in Fuyuki, and she still barely asks for anything now,' He thought. His smile turned into something genuinely warm, and he reached out to gently ruffle her hair. "Yeah. You've been good today, Sakura. Let’s go find somewhere fun."
Sakura’s lips curled into a small, shy smile that reached her eyes.
Yuuka watched the scene and let out a long exhale, though her smirk remained. "She’s quiet, but she definitely knows how to play you like a violin, Issei. You're a total softie."
Tamamo giggled, looking immensely proud. "Of course she does! That’s my daughter, after all~! She has the charm of a goddess in the making!"
—-----------------------------------
With Sakura’s school visit finished, the group wandered through town. Sakura remained quiet, her small hands clutching Issei’s sleeve as they searched for something fun to do. She rarely asked for anything; the only moment she had ever been truly "selfish" was the brave moment she told Issei she wanted to be his daughter. Even when she saw something interesting, she would just stare for a moment then look away, as if convincing herself she didn't need it.
That’s why, when they passed a bright arcade and her gaze lingered on the flashing neon lights just a little too long, Issei quickly noticed as he smirked and then nudged her playfully. "Hey, kiddo. Wanna check it out?"
Sakura’s eyes widened slightly, but she quickly looked down as if she had been caught doing something wrong. "…I-I don’t know… Is that okay? Isn't it expensive?" She asked softly.
Issei ruffled her hair, his smile warm. "Of course it’s okay! It’s 'Fun Day,' remember? Let’s go have some fun!"
Tamamo clapped her hands together in delight. "Ara~! A wonderful idea, darling! I do enjoy modern entertainment! I hear the rewards can be quite… charming."
Yuuka huffed, shoving her hands deep into her coat pockets, though a small smile tugged at her lips. "Tch. Don't get too excited, Issei. You’re probably just gonna get your butt kicked by a claw machine." She glanced sideways at Tamamo. "And you, you’re just gonna cheat using some weird magic, aren’t you?"
Tamamo smiled sweetly, her eyes gleaming with mischief. "Why, Yuuka-chan! Whatever could you mean? A goddess would never stoop to such… methods!
Yuuka rolled her eyes. "Yeah, right. I'm watching you."
With that, the group stepped inside, and Sakura’s quiet world expanded as the arcade buzzed with life. The air was thick with the sounds of flashing machines, clinking coins, and the excited chatter of other students. Sakura stayed glued to Issei’s side, her small hands gripping his coat while her eyes roamed over the towering cabinets in quiet wonder.
Tamamo, meanwhile, was already practically vibrating with excitement. "Ufufu~! Such a lively atmosphere!" She mused, her golden eyes scanning a row of prize-filled machines.
Yuuka watched her like a hawk. "I'm serious, Tamamo. If you're caught cheating, I'm leaving you here."
Tamamo giggled, ignoring the threat. "Mikon! You have so little faith in my delicate touch~!"
That was when Issei noticed a sudden, suspicious glow coming from Tamamo’s general direction. She was already holding a massive stack of arcade tickets, and she hadn’t even touched any of the machines yet.
Issei facepalmed, dragging his hand down his face. "Tamamo, did you seriously just conjure a stack of tickets with magic?"
Tamamo pouted playfully, sticking her lip out. "Maa! Why go through so much effort when the prizes are already within reach, darling? I'm simply speeding up the inevitable!"
Yuuka crossed her arms. "See? You’re literally the reason people tell stories about 'trickster fox spirits' being a pain in the neck."
"Fufufu~! But I am a trickster fox spirit! It would be rude not to live up to my reputation!" Tamamo admitted cheerfully.
Issei let out a long sigh. "At least pretend to follow the rules for five minutes so we don't get banned from here."
Tamamo smiled brightly, bending down to offer some of her "earned" tickets to Sakura. "Here you go, little one~! Pick out whatever you like!"
Sakura blinked, looking at the tickets and then at the nearby machines. She hesitated, her grip on Issei's sleeve tightening. "I… I think I wanna win one myself… like Papa said."
Tamamo’s expression softened into a genuine, proud smile. "Oh my! How admirable!"
Issei chuckled, placing a steadying hand on Sakura’s head. "That's the spirit! Alright, then let’s start with something easy."
—----------------------------
After showing Sakura the basics of some of the machines, Issei and Yuuka drifted toward other games. But then what started as a casual match quickly spiraled into an intense showdown; as their rivalry had been simmering ever since their first arcade visit back in Yuuka’s world.
At first, it was just some trash talk over a racing game. "Is that your top speed, Issei? I've seen turtles with more hustle," Yuuka taunted, her fingers flying over the controls.
"Just wait for the final lap, Yuuka! I'm just warming up!" Issei shot back, leaning into the turns.
The escalation was immediate. On the air hockey table, Yuuka was a blur of efficiency, scoring five consecutive points before Issei could even decipher a defense. "Five-zero," She smirked, tapping her mallet against the table. "Want to quit while you still have some dignity left?".
"In your dreams!" Issei growled. He then managed to dominate the light-gun shooting game shortly after, though he only won because Yuuka spent half the round shouting at him for 'stealing her kills' and 'blocking her line of sight', promising to herself that she will one day get much better.
Their momentum was briefly halted when they tried a dance rhythm game, only for Tamamo to step in and casually dominate them both. Her performance was so flawlessly graceful that half the arcade stopped their own games just to watch her move. "Fufufu! You children are so energetic, but you lack rhythm!" Tamamo giggled, not even breaking a sweat.
By the time Issei and Yuuka moved to the basketball hoops, they were both breathing hard, their eyes locked in a state of silent warfare.
"Tch. Nothing but lucky shots so far, Issei," Yuuka panted, wiping a bead of sweat from her brow.
"Hah! Admit it, Yuuka, I’ve got natural skill!" Issei countered, though his own arms were starting to ache.
Yuuka huffed, tossing a ball with practiced precision. "Fine. Believe what you want. But look at the scoreboard, I’m still winning the overall points for the day".
"Like hell you are, I'm taking the lead on the next one!" Issei barked.
Meanwhile, while they bickered, Sakura stood quietly nearby, clutching the hem of her coat. Her gaze had shifted toward a nearby claw machine, and her tiny fingers twitched slightly as if she wanted to reach out, yet she remained frozen, never uttering a word.
Issei, catching his breath between rounds, turned and noticed her immediately. She was standing perfectly still in front of the glass, staring at a small, fluffy white cat plushie trapped inside. She didn’t move, didn’t ask, and didn’t even reach for a coin.
Issei stepped away from the basketball game and crouched beside her. "You want that one, kiddo?" he asked gently.
Sakura fidgeted, her eyes dropping to her shoes. "…I don’t know how to play the grabbing game…" she admitted with a soft, hesitant whisper.
Issei’s heart twinged at her hesitation. "Well then," he said, rolling up his sleeves with a determined grin. "Let’s win it together, yeah? Team Hyoudou versus the machine".
Sakura’s eyes widened, and she slowly gave a small nod. Issei inserted the coin and carefully guided her tiny hands onto the joystick. "Okay, kiddo. You just move it like this… yeah, that’s right! A little more to the left… steady… now press the big button!"
The metal claw descended, clamped onto the cat's head, but slipped away as it rose. Sakura’s shoulders drooped instantly.
"Hey, no long faces! That was just a practice run," Issei encouraged her, dropping in another coin. "Let’s try again".
And again. And again. Until on the fifth attempt, the claw secured a firm grip. Thud. The white cat tumbled into the prize slot.
Sakura’s eyes lit up with a brilliance Issei hadn't seen before. She reached into the slot and pulled out the plushie, holding it with extreme care as if it were made of glass. She turned to Issei and gave him the softest, most beautiful smile he had ever seen. "…Thank you, Papa".
Issei’s breath caught in his throat. His heart clenched with a warmth that filled his entire chest, a feeling of pure, uncomplicated happiness he hadn’t even realized he’d been missing. He reached out and gently ruffled her hair. "Anytime, kiddo. Anytime at all".
Yuuka and Tamamo had been watching the scene from a few feet away and exchanged a knowing glance.
"Ara! How truly adorable!" Tamamo whispered, her voice uncharacteristically soft and sincere.
Yuuka crossed her arms and huffed quietly, trying to maintain her tough exterior, but there was no hiding the way her expression had softened into something undeniably kind. "He's a total goner," Yuuka muttered, though she didn't look like she minded one bit.
—------------------------------------
After spending way too much money, winning way too many prizes, and dealing with more of Tamamo’s chaotic shenanigans, the group finally began the trek home. The evening air was cool, but the atmosphere among them was warmer than it had been all day.
Issei walked at a relaxed pace beside Sakura, watching as she practically buried her face in the new white cat plushie, hugging it to her chest as if it were the most precious treasure. He nudged her lightly with his elbow, catching her attention. "So, be honest. Did you actually have fun, or was the arcade just too loud?"
Sakura looked up at him, her purple eyes shimmering with a clarity he hadn't seen since they left Fuyuki. Then, without a hint of the hesitation that usually ghosted her movements, she smiled brightly and gave a firm nod. "Mhm… I did! It was… really loud, but I liked winning with you, Papa".
Issei exhaled, the tension he’d been carrying in his shoulders for days finally evaporating. "Good. That’s what I like to hear".
Tamamo leaned in from his other side, her eyes soft as she watched the pair. "Ufufu! It seems the 'hero' of the arcade has finally found his greatest reward, hasn't he, darling?".
Yuuka, walking slightly behind them with her hands behind her head, let out a short, amused huff. "Tch. Don't let it go to your head, Issei. You still owe me a rematch for that basketball game. But," she paused, her gaze drifting to Sakura’s happy expression, "I guess today wasn't a total waste of time".
Misuki walked ahead of them, her pace steady and her expression happy to spend time with her daughter, though she slowed down just enough to let Sakura stay within reach. "We should make this a regular occurrence," She noted calmly. "A balance between work and recreation is essential for a child's development, Issei".
Issei just smiled, looking back at the small girl at his side. Because at that moment, nothing else mattered but Sakura’s happiness. And for Issei, that was enough.

Takamagahara
In a realm impossible to reach by mortal hands, the heavens of Takamagahara stretched infinitely, a land of golden clouds and sacred serenity where the Shinto pantheon resided and thrived beyond the comprehension of the human world.
Within the halls of this celestial domain, where the prayers of millions gathered and reached her divine ears, the Goddess of the Sun sat in deep thought. Amaterasu, seated upon a platform of radiant gold, her long flowing raven hair shimmering like the first light of dawn, let out a soft, rhythmic sigh. Her crimson and gold kimono, draped elegantly around her with delicate patterns of the rising sun embroidered along its fabric glowing faintly with divine energy.
Yet despite her celestial beauty, despite her unrivaled divinity, something troubled her. She had been having dreams. Dreams that should have been impossible.
"Amaterasu-sama?" A gentle voice broke the silence. A celestial attendant bowed low, her form shimmering. "The spirits of the harvest have arrived for their blessing. Shall I tell them to wait?"
Amaterasu didn't look up immediately. Her fingers lightly touched her own lips, as if searching for the ghost of a smile. "Tell them... I require a moment of solitude," She whispered, her voice like the chime of a silver bell.
The attendant hesitated, sensing the unusual weight in the air. "As you wish, Great One. Is there a disturbance in the mortal realm that troubles you? The prayers have been quite... standard lately."
"No disturbance," Amaterasu replied, her crimson eyes narrowing. "At least, none that should be a problem."
As the attendant withdrew, Amaterasu let her mind drift back to the impossible. She saw a home, a home that she had never stepped foot in, of a mortal existence where she was not a revered sun goddess, but simply a woman.
A woman who smiled, laughed, and teased a mortal man. She felt the phantom sensation of an arm draped around her, the heat of a kitchen, and the distinct, sharp annoyance she felt toward another woman who was constantly trying to steal his attention. The woman smiled, laughed, and loved. A woman spending her days with a mortal man, teasing him, embracing him, sharing a life that should not belong to her.
And stranger still, she saw herself with a child.A small, shy girl with soft features, her tiny hand grasping Amaterasu’s, looking up with eyes filled with admiration and warmth.
"A daughter," She breathed, her hand moving from her lips to her chest, feeling a warmth there that had nothing to do with her fire. "My daughter."
She had spent centuries in Takamagahara, her presence in the mortal world was minimal. This was not a vision of the future, nor a fragment of the past. It was a life she had never lived, yet the satisfaction of being held by that man felt more real than the gold beneath her. The emotions she felt within those dreams. The warmth in her chest, the satisfaction of being held, the annoyance at the other woman constantly trying to steal his attention. It all felt so real.
The strangest part of all was the man himself—he was no one special. In these dreams, he was not a legendary hero, a revered king, or even a mighty warrior blessed by the gods.
"He is simply a boy," she murmured to the empty, golden air. "A mortal with a plain face, brown eyes, and a perversion so obnoxious it should be beneath my notice". And yet, in the visions, she did not shun him or cast him aside as unworthy. Instead, she indulged his antics, teased him, and loved him with a ferocity that made her divine heart ache. Even now, a flicker of heat rose in her chest, a warmth that had nothing to do with her essence.
Her fingers curled into a tight, white-knuckled grip over the silk of her kimono. "This is absolute absurdity".
A goddess of her stature yearning for an idiot mortal? The thought should have been laughable, yet jealousy twisted inside her like a serpent. A deep, nagging resentment flared at the realization that she was not currently at his side, sharing in the mundane details of his life. The mere thought of another woman occupying that space made her divine form tremble with irritation.
"I am Amaterasu!" she declared, her voice echoing through the silent halls. "The embodiment of the sun, the crown of the Shinto pantheon! I have no need for such petty, flickering mortal emotions!".
And yet, she could not stop dreaming of him.
"Why is this happening?" she asked, closing her eyes to seek clarity. She searched her divine memory, finding only the ancient history of a mortal vessel she had created long ago to experience human life. But that vessel had perished, its feelings sealed and forgotten. She had no memory of creating a new one, certainly not one with the traits of a fox spirit. There should be no connection, no ties to the human world. Yet, night after night, fate pulled her back to his side.
"This mortal... who are you to me?" her voice whispered across the halls of Takamagahara, unanswered by the other gods.
A long, heavy silence followed until that familiar warmth bloomed in her chest once more. Amaterasu exhaled sharply and stood, her crimson and gold kimono shimmering like liquid fire as she walked toward the edge of the celestial plane. Her gaze pierced the divine veil, focusing on the mortal world far below. For the first time in centuries, a longing she had never known burned within her. As the sun began to set over the horizon and her brother, Tsukuyomi, prepared to wake, a small, dangerous smile curled her lips.
"I will find you, mortal," she promised the fading light. Her fingers brushed her lips, recalling the lingering sensation of a touch that had never happened, yet felt more real than her throne. "And when I do... you will explain why my heart refuses to forget you".
She didn't care if it was impossible, or if it meant shattering the laws of the divine. She wanted that life; she wanted to be with him. The Sun Goddess had made her decision, and her light never faded, it only grew until it found what it sought.
Done. Tell me what you think and if I made any mistakes.
