During Weiss’s pregnancy in her first trimester.

Issei collapsed onto the sofa of their shared apartment, letting out a heavy sigh as he stared blankly up at the ceiling. He was completely worn out.

Ever since Weiss had entered her sixth week of pregnancy, his life had turned into an unpredictable emotional roller coaster. Her mood swings were unlike anything he had ever prepared for.

Within a single hour, she could cycle through illogical rage, uncontrollable sobbing, bubbly cheerfulness, intense possessiveness, and sudden, ferocious bursts of affection. Not that Issei had any complaints about that last one, in fact, he considered it a massive win but the sheer unpredictable chaos of everything else had left the Red Dragon Emperor running on fumes.

Looking back over the past week alone was proof enough of what he was up against.

It had started on Saturday morning.

Issei had quietly slipped out of bed early, careful not to disturb Weiss while she was sleeping. Wanting to pamper his pregnant wife, he spent nearly an hour in the kitchen carefully preparing a lavish breakfast: A tall stack of golden, fluffy pancakes, fresh berries, whipped cream, and a warm mug of hot chocolate. Proud of his culinary achievement, he plated everything neatly on the table.

“Weiss! Breakfast is ready!” Issei called out gently.

When Weiss emerged from the bedroom, rubbing her eyes and wrapping her robe around herself, she walked into the kitchen. But the moment her ice-blue eyes landed on the breakfast table, she froze.

Her lips trembled. Her lower lip quivered. Then, her eyes brimmed with tears that began streaming down her cheeks.

Issei instantly went into full panic mode. "Whoa, whoa! What’s wrong?! Are you in pain? Is it morning sickness?!"

"...They're..." She sniffled softly, dabbing at her eyes with the sleeve of her robe. "...they're too round."

Issei blinked, completely thrown off. "...What? Why is that a problem?"

"Because they're perfect!" She sobbed, bursting into full-blown tears and covering her face with her hands. "Mine never come out this nice! It’s not fair! How are you better at this than me?!"

Issei spent the next fifteen minutes pulling her into his lap, wrapping his arms around her and whispering gentle reassurances against her hair, holding back his own laughter so he wouldn’t accidentally trigger a brand-new outburst.

Ten minutes later? Weiss was sitting at the table with a bright, sunny smile, happily devouring the entire stack of pancakes with whipped cream on her nose as if the meltdown had never happened at all.

—----------------

Then there was the incident late at night.

It was 3:00 AM, and Issei was finally drifting off into a deep, well-deserved sleep when a sharp nudge to his shoulder yanked him back to reality.

"We need pickles, and there are none in the fridge," Weiss demanded flatly, crossing her arms over her chest and staring down at him with an unyielding glare.

Issei blinked sleepily, trying to focus on the bedside clock. "...Now?"

"Yes, now."

Without a single word of complaint, Issei threw on a jacket and sprinted out into the cold night air to the only 24-hour convenience store open in the district. Determined to make sure she had options, he bought out their entire shelf, returning twenty minutes later carrying six full jars of pickles.

Weiss’s face lit up with a brilliant smile the moment he walked back into the apartment. "You found them!"

She eagerly unscrewed the lid of a jar, pulled out a pickle, and took a single bite. Suddenly, her expression twisted into a look of absolute disgust. She looked at the pickle like it had personally insulted her. "...I don't want pickles anymore."

Issei stood in the entryway, holding five remaining jars of pickles, staring at her in stunned, silent disbelief. "Then... what do you want?"

"Ice cream," Weiss answered smoothly, looking at him with complete confidence, knowing full well her loyal husband would fetch it for her without hesitation. "And we're out."

Issei let out a long, quiet sigh, set the jars on the counter, and reached for his coat. "...Ice cream. Got it."

—------------------

Then Monday arrived.

Issei was geared up, standing near the front door as he prepared to head out for a brief local security detail. "I'm heading out for my assignment," He said softly, turning back toward the living room.

"...Okay," Weiss replied quietly from the couch.

He then turned the door handle, but just as he was about to step outside—

"...Wait."

Issei stopped in his tracks and turned around. Weiss was staring down at her lap, her fingers nervously picking at the hem of her sweater.

"...Can you stay today?" She asked, her voice small and vulnerable, refusing to meet his eyes. "I know it's important… but I just don't want to be alone today."

Without a second thought, Issei pulled out his scroll and fired off a quick message cancelling his participation in the deployment. He tossed his gear aside, walked over to the couch, and wrapped a warm blanket around them both. They spent the entire day curled up together watching movies.

Later that Tuesday evening, as the sun began to set, Weiss rested her head against his chest and murmured, "I'm sorry... I know I was being unreasonable earlier."

Issei smiled gently, kissing the crown of her head. "I wanted to stay anyway."

—------------------

Of course, not every moment was quiet. On Tuesday afternoon, Issei committed a fatal error: he accidentally ate the last slice of cheesecake in the fridge, entirely unaware that Weiss had been mentally reserving it for hours.

When she discovered the empty plate, the explosion was instantaneous.

"I can't believe you!" She yelled, her Aura flaring with a sudden burst of frost that chilled the entire kitchen. "You ate it?!"

"I'm sorry! I didn't know!" Issei raised his hands defensively.

"I hate you!" She shouted.

The words echoed sharply through the room.

Silence fell over the apartment. The phrase hit far harder than Weiss had intended.

Issei’s shoulders sagged slightly. He slowly lowered his head, his face unreadable. "...Okay," he said softly. He grabbed his coat off the rack without another word. "I'm going to buy another one."

The moment the front door clicked shut, the weight of what she had said hit Weiss like a physical blow.

"Oh no..." The guilt crashed over her instantly. ‘How could I say that to him after everything he does for me?’

For the next twenty minutes, Weiss paced back and forth across the living room carpet, wringing her hands, her eyes burning with fresh tears of regret. When she finally heard the lock turn, she didn't even wait for him to step inside.

The moment Issei opened the door holding a bakery box with three fresh cheesecakes, Weiss practically tackled him, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.

"I'm sorry!" She cried into his shoulder.

"I know," Issei murmured softly, holding her steady.

"I didn't mean it! I don't hate you!"

"I know."

"I love you so much!"

"I know," Issei smiled, wrapping his arms securely around her waist and resting his chin on her hair, holding her close until her breathing slowed and her tears subsided.

—------------------------

And then, there were the nights where Weiss had complained about being freezing cold, swaddling herself in three thick blankets until she looked like a small white burrito.

Five minutes later: "I'm hot." She aggressively kicked every single blanket off the bed onto the floor.

Only for Five minutes after that: "I'm freezing again."

Through it all, Issei silently leaned over, picked the blankets off the floor, and gently draped them back over her shoulders without a single whisper of complaint.

—-----------------------

Back on the couch in the present moment, Issei let out another long breath. It was chaotic, exhausting, and completely unpredictable.

He heard soft footsteps coming down the hallway and looked up to see Weiss walking into the living room. She looked down at him, her eyes softening as she took in his tired frame, before quietly climbing onto the sofa and curling up directly on top of his chest an eager hot expression was shown.

Issei immediately wrapped his arms around her, holding her close as he knew what they were going to do next. Despite the 3 AM errand runs, the tearful pancake breakdowns, and the constant temperature fluctuations, as he felt her warmth and thought about the little life growing inside her, Issei couldn't help but grin.

She might be a handful... but she was his handful, and he wouldn't trade a single second of it for the world.
