Oh… ‘Empty Places’. Probably the most hated episode after ‘Seeing Red’. It’s certainly mine.

Ron Fehr

You're wearing my favorite Buffy shirt. Or at least the most memorable one.

Ron Fehr

It seems like th Buffy/Giles relationship has kind of switched from a student/teacher, child/parent one into one of equals. Yes, they're disagreeing more, but they still respect each other.

Alison

So many emotions with this episode. I love Buffy but Faith, Willow, Xander and a few others had valid points about not wanting to rush into the vineyard again. Xander lost his eye and Buffy didn’t spare a few minutes just to let him know she cared. It’s not so much it could end badly again but like Faith said you got to give them something to fight for.

Just Jayy1

You’re wearing the same shirt! 😂

Just Jayy1

The whole town leaves for higher ground but the Bronze is still popping off

Michael

Yes SMG was sick at the time but in filming schedule there’s no sick time off especially if you’re the main star , unless it’s an extreme reason there is hundreds of thousands on the line when filming is on the line and they were on UPN a network that was so bankrupt they eventually had to merge with The WB

Superplin

The inscription doesn't say she has to be alone to use it, it says "she" (unspecified) is the only one who can.

Keenan White

Every since you started this season I’ve been waiting for you to react to this very episode, if we made a top ten of Buffy episodes that really pissed the fans off, this one is number two at the very least.

Steve Quast

"It is not for thee. It is for her alone to wield." Interesting how that's a Latin inscription written with Greek letters. While I do think the potentials were right about some things, like not wanting to be led into another death trap like last time, that they should have been allowed more input for their next move, the fact that they kicked Buffy out of her own house was as absurd as it is infuriating. Buffy has proved herself over the last seven years. She's even proved herself to the newcomers this season. So yeah, I'm very much team Buffy with a few minor caveats. Hard to believe there are only three episodes left. I'm very much looking forward to them, but beforehand we have to finish out Angel season 4, which should also be fun.

Kazz (Charmed4lifekaren)

The potentials and Scoobies piss me off so much in this episode, especially Anya and Dawn. I'm also a complete Buffy apologist about this. Especially considering it's BUFFY'S HOUSE, she is the only one we see paying the bills (we have no in universe info that Willow pays anything) and they just kicked her out, what the hell? So, I am also completely on Buffy's side about this, so you're not alone.

StephanieB

Suffice it to say you are not alone in your outrage over the treatment of Buffy in this episode. It is insane. How could Dawn tell Buffy to leave her own house?? Funny, I never rewatch this episode on my own but I love to see reactors watch it. Nine times out of ten they flip out and come running to Buffy's defense (as they should). There are levels, though. Some are fully on her side and others can see shades of grey, at least for the potentials. It is a super frustrating episode for sure.

Ron Fehr

It kind of comes back to Buffy's confession to Holden Webster in Conversations with Dead People, where she sometimes felt superior to others. In this case, perhaps the others felt that Buffy was treating them as interiors.

Ron Fehr

Anya did have one point, though. It was luck that made Buffy the Slayer.

Kazz (Charmed4lifekaren)

I'm not sure I completely agree. Yes, it was chance that made Buffy a slayer, but everything that comes along with it couldn't be called Lucky.

Ron Fehr

In the end, it looks like Buffy was okay with giving Faith a chance to lead, telling her not to be afraid to do so. What I can't understand is why she wouldn't stick around. It was only earlier that's she seemed against it, and her attitude, at the question of following, kind of led to the others asking her to leave.

Thom Purdy

The scene in the hospital with Xander and Willow reminds me of Teacher's Pet, when Willow panics about the fact that the She-Mantis bites of her mates head, because that's where his eyes are.

StephanieB

It’s funny you say that because I have an interpretation of Anya’s “You didn’t earn it” speech as her actually expressing Buffy’s own inner thoughts and insecurities. Buffy did in fact tell Webs “I have all this power.. I didn’t earn it. I don’t deserve it.” So when I’m feeling more forgiving, I choose to view Anya as representing Buffy’s own inner monologue and conscience.

Ron Fehr

Clem was such a likeable character that it was nice to see him just once in awhile.

Dee Aitch

Yeah, Xander had the excuse that he was high on painkillers during the mutiny. Everybody else was just written ridiculously out of character. So many good episodes in season seven but so many missteps as well.

Florence

I was worried you weren't going to take Buffy's side after you said Faith was the sane one in their conversation about the Bronze. Only a couple of episodes earlier Giles had a big go at everyone about how they don't have time for fun and dating and yet here Buffy's meant to be ok with the choice to let the potentials have fun. Giles also told Buffy she was the only one that could stop the first, and the rest of them could only help and yet her decisions are constantly being questioned. Bless Buffy's soul I don't know how she isn't full of rage.

Ron Fehr

I think Andrew doesn't leave because he doesn't want to leave. And the others are just too soft-hearted to ask him to leave.

Captain Hammer

I'm curious if anyone would volunteer to go back into the vineyard after the last massacre with only a hunch and no additional info on how to fight Caleb? I think the mutiny was 100% realistic for a group of frightened people (mostly green) that just epically lost their first battle. I think there's a lot of wrong to go around in the episode but I never had an issue believing it would actually go down like that.

Ron Fehr

I think one point that Anya was trying to make was that it was dumb luck that made Buffy the Slayer. She did nothing beforehand to deserve that title. It was only after she was chosen that she proved to be a great Slayer. And Anya seems to feel that Buffy has let her superior abilities get to her head, that Buffy feels she is better than others just because of that.

Ron Fehr

I wonder why Buffy wouldn't stick around, even if it was just in an advisory capacity. Let Faith have a turn in charge, but be there if ever she asks for your help, Buffy. Try to follow, because you never got to before. Maybe you can better see things from their perspective.

Ron Fehr

Don't worry, Buffy. Dominique is still on your side.

HuntingSwan

I think this is a cool twist and brings a lot of interesting drama to the show but I wish it had occurred earlier in the season just so it could be given more space to develop.

HuntingSwan

Also Xander is the heart of the group and his serious injury has affected not only him but the stability of the group as a whole. If he hadn't been hurt this way things would never have gone down this way - notice in the previous ep when anti-buffy sentiments arose, he squashed them immediately with his speech.

Ron Fehr

Good idea, but I don't think that Buffy could cosplay the First, even if she was completely convincing. The First was incorporated, and all Caleb would need to do was try to touch her. How could Buffy convince him without letting him do that?

Ron Fehr

Had anyone in the group gone with Buffy to the school, that person would have heard the conversation with Caleb. And in doing so, Buffy could mention what she had figured out (after remaining consciousness of course). The perhaps she would have had someone one her side.

Ron Fehr

Andrew was able to read demon languages, and this wasn't, so it's possible that he wouldn't have been able to do so this time.

Alex Wright

Well bad luck, arguably a curse. But yes.

Alex Wright

I do think some of the Scoobies were acting a bit out of character in the final scene, but I do still like how it shows Buffy's military/political authority ebbing away and how quickly power dynamics can shift - perhaps especially in such a scary, stressful situation.

Alex Wright

Yeah totally. Even more so now what's basically a conscript army of frightened teenagers - who've been convinced to accept the Slayer as a general - now has a potential alternative leader they can transfer their loyalty to.

Alex Wright

I think Scoobies were perhaps written out of character, but a mutiny like that by the Potentials in itself was fairly realistic in such a stressful and fearful situation.

StephanieB

A little trivia: The band still sticking around in Sunnydale and playing at The Bronze is Nerf Herder, the same group that does the show's theme song.

Pauline Robertson

1. Faith said you gotta give me something to fight? Caleb? The bringers? no? lol 2. Anya's speech: All Anya did was turn her ex into a troll and she got her demon powers, is that all she had to do to 'earn' her powers? 3. Giles and Robin acting like they didn't try to push Buffy into testing the potentials and accepting casualties? 4. Thank you! Faith asks Buffy can she follow? no cause shes a leader exactly! for seven years she leads them, Giles saying it all rests on you, 'Joyce' saying her friends have always put too much pressure on her. 5. Willow and Xander with guilt at the hospital, they want her to lead but also sit there and play games when she is facing the biggest fight of her life, also she clearly feels awful over what happened to Xander and can barely face him. Anya's been bitter about Buffy this whole season (people can say well she did try to kill Anya? but Anya even says they both knew it would come to this because they both have a job to do) Buffy then saves her the next episode and tells her she doesn't want her friends to be alone? Willow is clearly upset about what happened to Xander, Giles and Robin are bitter about the whole Spike thing and Dawn is still inwardly pissed about Buffy not "choosing her" so decides its best to kick her out? I understand them all being scared, but as Xander literally said last episode " you didn't come here to fight plaque". Giles brought the potentials to Buffy and just lays all this responsibility on her about protecting them, then as I said, telling Buffy that everyone is expendable??? They all had personal reasons for how they acted with Buffy, they were all bitter and pissed, with the exception of Faith (except number 1 ?), so it wasn't all about going into battle imo.

Koz

It's the kind of situation that arises when someone wants Buffy to face having to be all alone, so the other characters have to do something they normally wouldn't to facilitate that isolation.

George Baxter

Except its not a normal situation... tensions have been brewing up across the season, the house is filling with girls that dont know or trust buffy, terrible mistakes have been made and the threat is worse than ever before. This confrontation is a very realistic escalation in a pressurised situation, even with people that usually love and trust each other. Do you act rationally when you're tired and hurt? Buffy is desperate, even if she's right the issues haven't gone away. And she's self-isolated more than ever before, ignoring emotions around here. Most leaders in a democracy are forced out for their mistakes in the hope someone else can do better. And this group for the first time ever has a candidate! We care for Buffy, we see her perspective but its not hard to empathise with this group and the situation here is written realistically if painfully to reflect that

George Baxter

Also Anya isnt above petty behaviour and in reality the pair more tolerate each other more than actually like each other. Anya was a vengeance demon after ll. She's grown but the love of her life was just skewered for no real reason and that's not exactly easy to get past

George Baxter

Agreed. This confrontation isnt out of nowhere, people have valid arguments.
