Back in the day, when computers were wood-fired, I had no idea that this was considered a replacement pilot. Here in the UK, the episodes were broadcast in the correct order but (and I can't remember well enough to be certain) I thought that the real pilot was shown in two separate parts.

Not sure if you just read discord or if you read these, but I think there's a decent amount of an argument for doing "The Train Job" as the pilot. There are quite a few reactors that called "Serenity" slow and boring. And if you step back and look at it impartially, the first hour of the two hour pilot is pretty much just world building, letting the characters feel each other out, letting Mal deal with his situation with Badger. Until the call is made by the mole, the energy is pretty low key. And that's fine for people that were loving the interactions and the world-building, but for people that want a nice normal energetically paced show, it doesn't work for them. So Joss and Tim spend a weekend writing a high stakes episode that, oh, by the way, introduces the crew and their relations perfectly in a much quicker manner, and has action and tension throughout the episode. And since they're masters, they do it so it's seamless for people that have already seen "Serenity" (and they'll do it again for the movie, because of course they will). The only real question is why they ever showed the first pilot, as it really has nothing to offer the viewer who already knows who's on the crew, what was in the box, and who the mole was. Of course this was after they'd given up on the show, so it really doesn't matter. Everyone blames FOX, but part of the blame is on an audience that no longer craves westerns. So many people were turned off by the western aspects, and had to be shown that "no, this is quality TV" before they finally accepted it for the genius it was. IMO.

River's technical description of the spaceship was just another way of showing the audience what Simon explained to the crew in the original pilot episode. River was lifted, or as he said, a gift.
