This is the episode where most watchers wonder why River slashed Jayne. Jayne himself was not the actual target. It was Jayne’s shirt that River was going after. In the episode “Shindig”, River was tearing off the labels off of cans of food. There is a connection to these cans of food and Jayne’s shirt. In the Firefly ‘Verse, the “Big Bad” is the Blue Sun Corporation. Think “Two by two, hands of blue”. Blue Sun is a mega-conglomerate that basically makes everything: Including canned food and t-shirts. This corporation has gotten so large and powerful that they are much more powerful than the Alliance government. This is why the Blue Sun guys have no hesitation to kill Alliance Federal officers. River really, really hates the Blue Sun Corporation. It seems reasonable to derive that Blue Sun was behind the Academy that tortured her. When River saw the Blue Sun logo on the cans of food, she ripped off the labels. Jayne was wearing a Blue Sun shirt, so she destroyed the shirt. The importance of the shirt to River’s attack was underlined by Jayne telling Simon that he is owed a replacement shirt.

Just remember what Jayne did to his partner that lead to "Jaynestown" and how he came to be a member of the crew in the first place.

My not so risky prediction: You will love the next episode, and have other reactions as well.

Ok, this is how I read the Jayne situation in this episode. Most of it I guess it could be considered hint-based headcannon after many many rewatches of the show: -Jayne cold-hearted mercenary character is somewhat a mask. He enjoys being that, and being an ass, but we can see several times that he is protective of most of the crew (especially Kaylee) -Mal didn't handle the knife situation particularly well. From Jayne's point of view, nothing was being done about it, so he took the matter on his own hands (I don't even think the money was the main factor here, but getting rid of the safety problem for himself and the crew members he cares about). We can see that he planned the betrayal in a way that no other crew member would get caught or involved. -I think that when Simon was explaining what happened to River, Jayne had a change of heart, and that's why he decided to hurry up and leave as soon as possible, maybe hoping that the trap wouldn't be set yet. Anyway, I might be gaslighting myself about it because I enjoy his character so much, but he's one of the characters that benefits the most from rewatches, because most of his depth or growth is barely hinted in the background (except for "Jaynestown", when its upfront but covered in hilarious moments).

Great episode - but on a technical note - is it just me or is the audio on this video really, really low? I had to crank everything on my laptop to 120% to be able to properly hear it.

Your pre-viewing prediction was right. There was a seduction. Jayne was seduced by money.

Rewatching this episode made me wish for the episode in lets say season 4 where Jayne does "turn" on Mal or maybe just find a better job.

Found it amusing that Simon explained, in layman's terms, how they were going to get into the hospital, by pretending to be corpses. River responds that she understands by using medical terms. Usually it's the opposite.

The way I see it, Jayne spent a lot of time memorizing his line, and he wasn't going to let that time be wasted by not getting to say his line.

Ron Fehr

Zoey, you're supposed to say "clear" before you zap them. But in this case, I don't blame you .😊

Ron Fehr

Well Domi, you were waiting for Jayne to do something sketchy. The waiting is over.

In the end, though, Jayne was still hoping he would get his money/reward. It was only when he was denied it that he decided to help make a break for it. You might be right about why he ended their session early, but when he saw the police already there to make the arrest, he was still willing to turn them in.

Ron Fehr

Jayne was right. The day the money was good enough turned out to be an "interesting day."
