It's in the background, but the letter Jayne reads from his mother mentions that he sends money home to help with his sick relative, my guess is his sister, so his previous obsession with money is more than banal greed.

I'm sure you recognize the actor of Tracy as the same one who played Knox on Angel, and the Vampire Psychologist from Buffy S7E7 "Conversations with Dead People", Just before the filming of the funeral scene at the end, the cast had found out they had been canceled by FOX, so the acting was tinged by the sadness of reality.
