Yay for season 3!
Anne is a pretty good episode, but it’s not one of my favourites. I like all the character focus and interactions in it, and all the Sunnydale stuff, but the MOTW parts just aren’t so interesting to me. Did you notice the long, continuous-take shot in the school at the beginning of the episode? Trademark Joss Whedon scene :P It’s weird because I’m not sure they explicitly mentioned in the episode where Buffy ran away to, but she was in Los Angeles. I guess maybe it’s assumed that people will figure out where she is based on the beach location in her dream and the streets we see in the episode… because I’ve definitely seen reactors mention Buffy being in Los Angeles when they finish watching this episode. And yes, that shot you recognised was used in the Angel intro… presumably because Angel is set in Los Angeles too, and they’d already shot that footage, so they used it when they put together the Angel credits.

Kirsten (Heavenli24)

Oh, also, I've never actually thought about how much time passed while Buffy was down in 'hell'... I've always assumed that her scenes take place at the same time as everything in Sunnydale and that no time passed. Just doing some maths: if it is the case that 1 day on Earth = 100 years in hell, then that would mean (if my calculations are correct) that 1 day in hell would be only 2 seconds on Earth. Assuming Buffy was only in hell for a few minutes of 'hell time' (she spent 7 minutes of the episode there), then actually that would mean only about 2 microseconds would have passed on Earth.

Chas Summers

Time passes quickly down there. Not back in our reality.

Shaun Houghton

Well, well, well, look whose jump on board, although reluctantly, the S.S, Cordy and Xander.

Shaun Houghton

Such good work, somehow your maths seem mathier then normal.

Shaun Houghton

I dunno, have you seen a Domi reaction, time just flies by.

Domi E

I feel like given the fact that I lived in Los Angeles I should have recognized it but I totally didn’t... Oops! 😂

Domi E

Oh damn yes that makes so much sense!!!

Domi E

Aw that’s such a flattering comment thank you Shaun!

Domi E

And oh that makes a lot more sense Chas! Of course I’d get worried for things that have no probability of happening 😂

Kirsten (Heavenli24)

Oh, no, wait - just realised I didn't actually finish the calculation. 2 microseconds on Earth would be 1 second in hell, so 7 minutes in hell would be 0.01 seconds on Earth.

Domi E

I already have my life jacket on though, ready to jump anytime 😋

Tim Pierce

In all fairness though, Angel wasn't supposed to end. The WB got a hair up their ass and when Joss wanted an early renewal, Jordan Levin felt like they were backed into the corner and pulled the plug. Supposedly, if Angel hadn't been cancelled, the season would have ended with Fred turning into Illyria.

Domi E

I know they were rushed into finishing the show but they knew it was ending while filming S5 right? God I would have loved it they continued because I wanted to see Fred again sooo badly!

Negative

It's funny how people always get the time thing backwards in this episode, thinking Buffy may have disappeared down there for a really long time when in reality it was probably not even a full minute on Earth. I always liked this episode, Buffy in Los Angeles just trying to get away from her old life, and a nice monster of the week to just bring her back to herself. Plus she seemed extra badass in this episode with the nonchalant way she rips the phone off the wall, or her "fuck you" attitude to the demon guy. Good stuff.

Tim Pierce

Idk at one point during the final season it became the "final" season, but yeah they never intended for it to end.

Domi E

100% she was so badass this episode!!

Tim Pierce

28 straight episodes without Darla. Yes, this is going to be a thing.

palisade

So basically you're saying she was in the other dimension "not very long" (check my math baby) 😉

Steve Quast

Ohhhh. So you want to change your prediction after you cheated. Got it! :P

Steve Quast

"I've already spoken too much." Nah. No such thing. Well....unless you spoke a 3 hour intro. That might be a little excessive....

Ron Fehr

I don't mind your intros, no matter how long they are. It's interesting to hear your views. And in this case I understand. You're starting a new season of Buffy. Like you said, you had some time to think about last season. You just wanted to air your new thoughts.

Kirsten (Heavenli24)

Lol - yeah, that's about it :P. It's the scientist in me that has to work it out exactly and then double-check it to make sure.

Domi E

28 episodes of Domi being a fool waiting for her to come back

Domi E

In my defense, it’s only so that I’ll win!

Domi E

Okay gotcha I’ll make sure to remind myself to stop once I’m 2 hours and 59 minutes into the intro 🤓

Ron Fehr

And it would be a lot to edit for YouTube, I would think.

Ron Fehr

The ending always causes me to tear up, seeing Buffy and Joyce reunite.

Steve Quast

Winner and still champion!

Steve Quast

2 hours and 59 minutes sounds perfect.

Domi E

It really was such a heartwarming scene!

Steve Quast

This is probably the best season intro we've had so far.

Steve Quast

"It wasn't horrible seeing Cordelia and Xander getting back together. It was kind of cute." I'm sorry, I didn't catch that. Could you please say that one more time?

Steve Quast

Yeah, I have to say I wasn't very satisfied with the series finale of Angel. The show deserved a lot better. It's a shame they didn't get at least one more season. And what happened to Fred, especially after the loss of Cordelia, was almost too much to bear.

Ron Fehr

I especially liked the part just before Joyce opened the door. It seemed like she could sense that it was Buffy.

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

Season 3 :D A bunch of people have explained the 'almost no time passed while she was in the hell dimension' thing so I won't repeat. But I think summer holidays in the US are about 3 months so she has been gone a long time. I also think that they were all focusing on the start of the school year as an obvious time for her to return and when she didn't it hit them all that she might not be coming back :( It kills me that Joyce has been beating herself up all summer BUT she did say the thing! However, you're right, I completely understand her wanting to throw the blame on to somebody else. But blaming Giles felt a little like kicking a puppy :( On the other hand what she said was true, he has had a relationship with her daughter behind her back, no wonder she's pissed off! And Giles is partly to blame because he didn't let Buffy tell her mum who she was, which meant that Joyce found out at the worst possible time. Although I would say that it's pretty much the only rule Buffy has gone along with so I kinda think she was all on board the not telling mum anything - like a normal teenager ;) Still, what gets me about that scene is that I'm sure Giles is blaming himself for not being able to find her but also for her leaving. Angel seems to be gone, he was pretty sure Acathla had been activated in 2x22 so he's probably presuming Buffy killed him. That's certainly what they were discussing in 2x22 at the end and given the time that has passed it can't be 'Buffy is off with Angel having fun times' lol. And who gave Angel the information to activate Acathla and so force Buffy to kill him? Giles :( Also, how amazing was that one shot all the way from Willow and Giles in the library to the awkward first meeting after the summer of Xander and Cordelia? And then the terrible silence as it cut to Buffy sitting on her own eating from a can :(((((( You're right that she had to be the one to decide to come back. And she kicks some major ass before doing so! :D I'm not in it for the fight scenes but that one was so beautifully shot. Bad thing though, no less than three shots from Passion in the opening credits. I still find myself yelling 'really?!?! you thought we'd want to be reminded of THAT every freaking episode?!?' ;) Plus, I very much appreciate you throwing down with the jealousy on behalf of Jenny when she can't. Can you imagine how she would have reacted if she'd ever seen anybody making a move on Giles last year? lolol And I love the new set up! Great reaction as always and you talk as much as you want :)

Jordan Haddow

Actually, Ghiles didn't stop Buffy from telling her mom. Buffy did that on her own. Trust me, I can't say more, but at some point in the mists of time the reason why comes up, just not before now.

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

Hmmm...OK, I am interested to find out. :) I was just referring to Passion when Buffy said she should tell her mum and Giles told her no.

Ron Fehr

A couple more comments. Firstly, things in the hell dimension happened pretty quickly after Lily and Buffy got there, That would explain why not much time passed once they got out. Secondly, just so you don't rack your brain over it, that was just one of the teachers. Snyder is still the principal.

Jordan Haddow

One of the things I really love about the Buffy series is how they can take some obscure character like Chantrel (Lily) who play a tiny bit part and bring them back and make you love them. It's like how the seemingly random story element of Dander becoming a soldier for Halloween ended up being crucial later on with regards to stopping the judge, Here Lilly's knowledge of who Buffy was allowed her to push past Buffy's defenses to trigger the protective slayer in her so she could escape her self implosion. Thanks for another great reaction and can't wait to see you watch what's to come.

Domi E

It was a pretty strong episode!!

Domi E

Thanks for all the comments as always RJ ❤️

Domi E

Oh yes I figured that out by the following episode when he appears :)

Domi E

Thank you Jordan!! And that’s very true. It’s so funny that when I saw her I didn’t recognize her but I just thought “Damn she looks like Darla” which was my first comment after originally meeting her haha!

Ron Fehr

Was he in I Only Have Eyes For You?

Steve Quast

*crickets use Morse Code to repeat what Domi said*

Domi E

Okay now that’s just unfair Steve!!!!

zerofk

Don't forget she was down there long enough to get knocked out, be dragged into a cell, and wake up. I'd guess it was anywhere from an hour to a day (in Hell time).

If you were to fall off your chair and die from the heat I should take it somewhat amiss. I might even be cranky. I think this is my favourite season opener on the show. I like the stark contrast between the normalcy of the scoobies in school and the sadness of Buffy in her hotel room or on the street with wide-angle shots to emphasise the loneliness. And of course there's the pivotal moment where Buffy quite literally takes back her name and with it her power. But most of all I like that they brought back Chantarelle/Lilly/Anne. When we first met her she was just a tiny character with a few lines but now she's shown to be more. And I love that there are hints to even more that we probably will never know about; things like "I know how it is when you gotta get lost." and the silence after "What do they call you at home?" She's such a tragic character but none of it is spelled out - the show trusts its audience to understand with what little we're given. And despite her meek demeaner in the end it's _her_ who pushes Ken down. Like Buffy took back her power, Lilly shows a promise that maybe she too will find hers. Sometimes the best part of a story is what's implied rather than what's shown.

Domi E

Very true! Being subtle sometimes is everything!

UTU49

Upgrades. They shot seasons 1 and 2 on 16 mm film, which, as you probably know, is the film stock that the cavemen used. For season 3 they finally upgraded to 35 mm film, like the rest of the world. They also re-recorded the theme song. It's considerably cleaner and brighter.

UTU49

You mentioned that people never talk about Buffy seasons with statements like: "Seasons 2 and 3 are great and it's all down hill from there." There are at least 3 seasons that people frequently state as their favorite. Even better is the fact that every season has some great episodes and great story arcs... so even in my least favorite seasons, there is lots of good stuff.

Domi E

ah that’s great!!!

Domi E

yep exactly! it’s why i’m so excited to keep watching!!

Ron Fehr

Thanks Richard. I thought that was him.

Justafox305

ooh when you said that call about a girl fighting off vampires in oakland. i never noticed that before. it probably was faith

Carl

Your face when you first saw David in the opening credits was priceless. Also did the end to the credits grow on you after watching the episode? Thats kickass Buffy to the max! Also it's very easy to get mixed up with time and that portal They said that it takes 100 years in that dimension for one day to go by in Buffy's reality. So that said, it was instantaneous. As far as Buffy's reality is concerned, she never left.

Carl

Ok that last part was already addressed Sorry!!

Dan

But if you die during filming, who will edit the video?! If you want to get really fancy with lighting you could put a lamp on the floor behind you, too. I don't want to get spoilery but when it comes to making predictions based on what they must/can't do in the plot - based expected story arc, where they are in the season/series, etc. - realise that Joss Whedon knows that you know this. And occasionally, from time to time, Joss Whedon is going to screw with you.

Domi E

it did grow on me but i kinda still prefer the original s1 harvest one because i love it SO much 😭

Domi E

i love the concern 😂and yes the three point lighting would be ideal but i don’t have a lamp that could stay there unfortunately. but i’ll try and figure something out! and hehe that’s true i’m sure he will.

Antonio

"I didn't puke so that's progress" 😂 Haha glad you're back Domi!

Jordan Haddow

Not to spoil anything, but you were mentioning trying to predict characters based on the intro credits. I just wanted to say that the intro credits are not stable in the least with respects to this show. They can and do change at any point in the season when the decide an action big enough to require it is necessary. I won't say when or in fact how many times it happens, but this show definitely does one time custom intro(s) for episode(s) Love the reaction and so happy the new season has started. YAY!

Jordan Haddow

RJ, good find. I forgot that one. Still, I stand behind my previous statement. (There could be an argument for some watchers protocol to not tell the parents, but i) Kendra's parents new when she was a small child and ii) Buffy doesn't necessarily listen to her watcher some(much) of the time.) All i can say for sure is, at some point between now and the end of the series, an episode will touch on the subject.

Domi E

Oh interesting, thanks for the warning!!!

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

Also, pretty much every season would have a significant number of people saying it's their favourite while other people say it's their least. It's impossible to tell with new viewers what they'll think tbh. I doubt there's many who think it was all down hill from season 1 but there's probably someone out there who thinks that :)

UTU49

@RJ. For every opinion -- no matter how strange -- there will be at least 0.5% of the population that will hold that opinion.
