My conclusion from this episode is that Buffy is too good of a person and I will protect her from pain at all costs, the poor girl.

Of the many reactions I’ve seen to this episode, first, I want to say, yours, as often, was the best. One thing I think you missed, however, is that given your recognition last season that the show would start to be about more than one evil at a time that needs defeating, this episode had that, with a spin. There was the evil of the emotional turmoil and there were the zombies. The genius of the episode was how they collided. Willow says, “Talking about it isn't helping. We might as well try some violence,” and they are rescued by the Zombie’s crashing through the window. Everything returns to normal. Xander tells Buffy, “I’ve got your back.” The two evils mesh to bring about the resolution, the life they have learned to share. Without the monsters how long would the problems have continued? There is probably much that can be drawn from that – but your observation about the two, or more, evils per show (your understanding of “Bad Eggs” is sheer genius) helped me to see this one in a different light. By the way, you say that Joyce says that “it kind of feels worse” having Buffy back but she doesn’t say that – she says that “in some ways” it seems worse. There’s all the difference in the world in those two things. *In some ways* I’m sure it was. That doesn’t mean that she wasn’t happy to have her daughter back. Your understanding of every person having a legitimate perspective is great. You said you felt more for Buffy than the others. This could have been called “When They Were Bad” – in “When She Was Bad”, Buffy’s perspective is harsh and unfeeling, but we forgive her because of her PTSD. In this one we are more on her side than on theirs because we have seen what happened to her. They don’t know – they don’t know that she killed Angel, and not Angelus. Given their lack of knowledge, their lack of understanding makes more sense.

Yeah, Buffy's friends aren't the best in this one and it's not many people's favourite episode. Got to love Giles though.

Domi E

That’s true, Giles probably has the maturity to understand Buffy a bit better!

GenU

The Hootenanny idea was a terrible one, but what do you expect from kids that think a good time means a wild party? They should have listened to Giles and realized that it was an invitation to an intimate gathering.

Domi E

Totally! They misread the situation very badly!

ThatGuy11200

Always good to see another reaction. 🙂 It's just a shame I don't like this episode. 🙁

Domi E

Can’t blame ya! This one kinda really hurt my freaking heart, I must say

Ron Fehr

Shindig and hootenanny are actual words, although I don't recall the exact definitions. Hootenanny makes me think of old fashioned country music. But that's just my feeling. Shindig I'm uncertain about.

Kirsten (Heavenli24)

Just looked them up: - Shindig (informal, US, UK): a noisy event or situation, especially a large, energetic party, celebration, etc. - Hootenanny (informal, US): an informal gathering with folk music ... which actually implies that a shindig is more chaotic than a hootenanny

Kirsten (Heavenli24)

Not one of my favourite episodes... actually, it's my least favourite episode of season 3, mainly because I just don't like the whole zombie MOTW plot. However, there are some good moments in it - I like the beginning few scenes, up to the one with Joyce and Buffy in Snyder's office, and I also like the Giles/Snyder and Buffy/Willow scenes at the end, but I can pretty much take or leave the rest of the episode... even the emotional arguments at the party fall a bit flat for me.

Ron Fehr

I like Buffy's nickname for Snyder. His Uglyness.

Steve Quast

"You've got the wrong house, Mr. Belvedere!" lol 80's kids would understand.

Steve Quast

"Do you like my mask? Isn't it pretty? It raises the dead!....Americans!" While this isn't the greatest episode, it's home to one of Giles' best lines in the series.

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

Not my favourite but I certainly don't hate it and I think they do a good job of addressing everybody's emotions. I side with Buffy in this one but that is at least in part because I know what happened to her at the end of season 2. However, none of the characters do. It is true that Buffy could have let them know she was all right even if she didn't come back at that time, but I also think it would be so difficult, I mean, what do you say?! I understand why Joyce is upset, of course, but having that argument in front of everybody, no! And unfortunately she is the one who said Buffy shouldn't come back. I think it's just that these emotions have been bubbling away for three months. Still, not cool Joyce! I do get that Willow is upset but we know that in reality her problems pale in comparison to Buffy's. And bailing on her and not letting her know? No, Willow!! I do understand though. Xander is being typical Xander tbh, he's hurt so he lashes out. It's not pretty but it's in character. Oz shouldn't have suggested making it a big party, but I think he's mostly got good intentions and certainly doesn't say anything hurtful. Cordelia is actually trying to help, just in her own way i.e. without a shred of tact lol I don't think it's a coincidence that the three who seem to be angry at Buffy end up with her upstairs fighting the zombies, while Oz, Cordelia, and Giles are together downstairs. I know it seems like Giles is avoiding her (and it hurts me that Buffy thinks this), but I'm actually going to defend him here (what a surprise ;D). He was the only one to say 'welcome home' and to look nothing but relieved (he said as much) throughout the episode. Yes, he didn't arrive on time for the party BUT he was researching, plus I really don't think he wanted to be at something like that, with a bunch of students who are going to wonder wtf he's doing there. I think there might be a tiny bit of wanting to avoid being at the house but I don't think it's to avoid Buffy. Basically, he's the only person (as far as we know) who has taken off like that. I suspect he dropped out for longer than three months, I bet he didn't tell anybody where he was, and he did a lot worse while he was away. I think he knows how hard it is to come back and wants to give her space and time to adjust. tbh I think he comes off as the only one out of Willow, Xander, and Joyce who is NOT being judgemental. Plus, he almost punches Snyder in the face so that is a LOT of points to Giles :D

Ron Fehr

Hey Domi. I hope you got a kick out of watching Shan (AfterShowReacts) and her response to this episode.

Steve Quast

This is one of my least favorites of season 3, so at least we have that out of the way. While I understand Buffy's friends being upset with her, they went about articulating that in exactly the wrong way. They could have listened to Giles' advice to have an intimate, personal gathering, rather a shindig or a hootenanny (both real English words, though not commonly used). That way they could have had more of a calm, rational discussion rather than this nonsense of acting stand-offish until they decide to unleash their feelings on her in all their fury. But, the writers felt the need to create drama, so drama we had. Still, this episode does have some of Giles' best lines. In addition to the one I mentioned above, the part at the end where Ripper comes out when he's dealing with Snyder....it's almost worth going through just to watch that scene.

Steve Quast

I guess you know you don't have to sue the writers since you've already seen episode 3....but maybe you should anyway lol.

Tim Pierce

Buffy had episodes throughout it's run where you could remove any supernatural element and still have an incredible story. This is one of them. You wish they could have just dealt with the aftermath.

Tim Pierce

Annnnnnd 29 straight episodes without Darla.

Tim Pierce

Ok, I suppose I've teased Domi enough. I just thought it was funny how every few episodes she was sure Darla was coming back.

Domi E

buffy, always teaching me new things!

Domi E

that’s totally valid!! it was def not the best ep, but important regardless!

Dave Ford

It's Pat I feel for in this story - all she does is be a good friend to Joyce Summers, and what happens? When Joyce's violent, delinquent daughter comes back after breaking her heart, they have an out of control party, wreck her house and Buffy murders Pat by putting a garden fork through her face. No wonder the school doesn't want her back and the police think she's trouble. RIP Pat.

Domi E

LOL gotta love giles!

Domi E

you’re so right, giles and cordy def were the most sane ones this episode (other than buffy, of course!!)

Domi E

haha i feel bad for how much she suffered

Domi E

very true, oh these writers and drama.... i wonder why 😋

Domi E

i’ll add it to the lawsuit i’ll be filing once i finish s7!

Domi E

Yep! But the monsters do make it even more Buffy(ish)!

Domi E

I love it Tim!!! I’M STILL WAITING!!! And now I gotta add Spike/Dru to the countdown... waiting for those two!!

Domi E

Well when you put it that way 😂😂

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

lol the actress is amazing though, she REALLY makes you hate her! I think my favourite line is when Pat and Buffy are at the bottom of the stairs and Buffy yells 'MOM!!!' :D

Tim Pierce

Pat's death is certainly tragic, but imagine, if you will, how the events may have played out if Buffy hadn't come back and Joyce had still hung up the mask.

Steve Quast

You'll have quite a lengthy suite by then.

UTU49

Tim... FAN FICTION!!

The Value of Life

Like most Buffy episodes, I like this one for it's wise real life advice. When you're in a situation where your relationships with your friends have become awkward or strained, you call them all together, schedule a good old fashioned zombie attack, fight for your lives side by side, and presto, the bonds of friendship are re-established! Works every time.

CeNedra

I was going to skip this one as I get angry every time I watch it 😂 but as it's you reacting to it *sigh* here goes... 😘

Justafox305

I also watched Legacies and notice some silimarities (the training with the father like figure, the monster of the week) and also other things on Legacies that haven't happened on buffy yet, so i won't spoil it.

zerofk

The Summers' house really got beat up this episode. First Joyce puts a hammer through the wall, then the party people put trash everywhere, and then to top it off zombies literally break the windows and doors down. That's got to be expensive.

Domi E

*takes notes* okay great! now i know what to try next time!

Domi E

aw you’re too sweet, especially after i’ve also made you suffer through a part of bad eggs haha

Domi E

yep! i could feel that so many of the stories were inspired by buffy even without seeing the later seasons yet

Domi E

poor joyce, another problem to add to her endless list!

Chas Summers

One of the few episodes I can't stand. The "dump on Buffy" part of the party both feels out of character for everyone and the dialogue sounds like dialogue and not actual conversation. I only like the part that ends after Giles' house.

Domi E

The reunion with Giles was one of my favorite moments for sure!

UTU49

"It's Pat I feel for in this story" It's Pat was a pretty good movie.

Phoenix Dawn

Really? I really like their dump. Imagine being Willow, your best friend leaves without a word! And Xander is always eager to speak the “truth”. He has deep, delusional self importance. Cordy was self involved and doesn’t like Buffy anyway. Her mum was frustrated...I don’t understand how any of this was out of character.

KT

I definitely think all the lighting choices in this episode were intentional, to convey the sense of uneasiness and evasiveness everyone is feeling. But I will also note that the Buffy "vibe" that you're used to will continually evolve for the entire series. It's one reason the show is so timeless.

Domi E

I think it makes sense rationally but some moments were a bit too much, but then again I think it makes sense, cause they’re just frustrated teenagers, but it hurt to watch

Domi E

That’s a great point!!

litafanforlife

I understand that Buffy's leaving affected her friends, but they and her mom made me mad, especially Xander. I feel so bad for Buffy in this episode.

XavierMX

I wasn't going to comment, because I usually just ignore negativity on these videos... but I have to say since no one has said this yet.... this is actually my least favorite episode of the ENTIRE SHOW. So, I know about not giving expectations and spoilers, but I don't think this comment is a spoiler. In fact, from what I've seen, your opinions of the show mirror mine almost exactly, and you should take this as good news that almost 95% of the rest of the show is better than this episode. Most people find good in this episode, but I can't deal with the way Buffy is treated after such a traumatic event. Great comments as usual. Cheers!

Domi E

I really do too!! Poor Buffy

Domi E

Thank you Shaun!! I’m glad our opinions are so alike!!
