"I have faith that we're going to be meeting Faith." Okay, Liam :P By the way, you look nice with your glasses on.

Steve Quast

Fast food workers in Sunnydale should definitely make a higher wage. LOL

Ron Fehr

I did the job for over 15 years. No disagreement here.

Ron Fehr

Yes she does, Liam.

Domi E

Not sure which one of the Liams you mean, but a flattering comment anyways haha. And thank you!

Steve Quast

Kakistos: possibly a variation or derivation of the ancient Greek word κακέσχατος (kakeschatos), which means "extremely bad." Fun little fact if you're a dork like me!

Ron Fehr

Obviously the gang knew that Buffy had killed Angel, but they didn't know that his soul had been restored. I think that Giles had already known earlier that Buffy hadn't told them everything. Hence the ruse about the binding spell. To get Buffy to open up about her experience.

Nica Marie

Fab Filippo as Scott Hope was such a treat for me the first time this aired as I was already a fan of his. First saw him as Bizzy's older bro on the Showtime for kids show Ready or Not, then on my fave ep of Nickelodeon's Are You Afraid of the Dark? And after Buffy he popped up on the Showtime series Queer as Folk (most definitely not for kids this time).

I've been looking forward to this one..😊 Faith is definitely my favorite supporting character in the Buffyverse and honestly I might like her more than Buffy. Fun fact: there were several possible additional spinoffs considered in addition to Angel. The one that came closest to actual production would have featured Faith with Wesley as her Watcher. Unfortunately it never happened. Probably because at the time Eliza Dushku was working on other projects. Fortunately much of the proposed storyline ended up being used in the post series comics.

Steve Quast

The scene at the end where Buffy finally opens up and Giles says, "There is no spell," always gets me. So yeah, between "The Witch," "School Hard" (Spike's intro), and this episode (Faith's intro), episode 3's have a good track record in Buffy so far. This is a great episode and it does help us to get over the events of season 2 and prepare us for the journey that is season 3. We've now begun heading in that direction.

Steve Quast

Regarding the three slayers, I tend to look at it this way. Kendra is very traditional and proper. She's deep into studying, isolating herself, very shy around boys, and following procedure. Faith, on the other hand, is more of a wild child. I think we've seen that in just this episode. She's more ruled by her emotions and doesn't seem as concerned with following proper slayer etiquette. Buffy is like a balanced medium between the two. Not as proper as Kendra, but not as crazy as Faith.

Steve Quast

I mean Liam Duke, since he's rather famous for his puns lol.

Steve Quast

The episode title, "Faith, Hope, and Trick" is probably a nod to the three attributes "faith, hope, and love" from 1 Corinthians 13.13. Of course Trick isn't love....but I love Trick, so it works.

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

About Buffy's attitude to Faith, Buffy was not keen on Kendra at first either - admittedly Kendra was trying to kill her and Angel lol This time it's more extreme I guess because with Kendra it was only Giles who Buffy thought liked Kendra more, this time it's everybody who really likes Faith so Buffy is super defensive from the start. She was jealous of Kendra though until she talked more to her. The title is great, Faith (the character and having faith in Faith), Hope (as in Scott Hope and Buffy hoping to be able to start anew or Joyce's hope that Buffy could give up the slaying), Trick (as in Mr Trick and in Giles tricking Buffy into opening up). I really like the Giles trick :) because, no, they didn't know anything except Angel was gone and then whatever Buffy said when she got back (evidently not the truth). And you're not wrong about the parallels between coming out as a slayer and as gay. There are many essays about how being a slayer is kind of an analogy of being gay, Buffy is different, it wasn't her choice, hiding her identity from all but a small group of fellow 'misfits', coming out to her mum, she tries to deny it in season 1, twice, accepts it in season 2 etc Faith is such an interesting character, looking forward to you finding out more. :) It was pretty funny listening to you completely misunderstand the Angel return but I am also sure you're not the only one to be confused by that. Also, I'm sorry, you raised your hand on the 'ew' line about Giles?!? Way to disrespect Miss Weekend's taste in men ;) And the Giles impression - where's he from again, New York? lololol

Domi E

oh that’s awesome!!

Domi E

Yes yes Giles is very smart! I just didn’t realize they didn’t know he was Angel again!

Domi E

oh that’s awesome!! he’s a pretty great actor!

Domi E

Omg the watcher/slayer dynamic I have been BEGGING for haha I love it!!

Domi E

Heck yeah! So excited, let’s go S3!!

Domi E

Yep it does seem that way! An interesting comparison since Buffy (without the comparison of Faith) does feel pretty “wild” haha

Domi E

Lol knew I shouldn’t have tried the Giles impression the moment it came out of my mouth haha. And man the different meanings of the title 🤯🤯Love it

Richard Ashton

Angel: I want to apologise for brutally murdering your soulmate. Giles: Call for dinner, we're having stakes.

Steve Quast

I didn't know he was on "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" I used to watch that show, but it's been a long time.

Domi E

LOL giles is gonna have a hard time forgiving

Steve Quast

Angel: Giles, do you forgive me? Giles: Would you like me to answer that? Or should I just glare?

Phoenix Dawn

Faith didn’t say she came to Sunnydale because of something bad rising, she said she came because her watcher was on a retreat and she wanted to meet Buffy.

Carl

Not a big deal but in episode 3 you might want to rewatch from about 10:30 to 12:00. Your shock over them not knowing that the spell worked tells me some of this went over your head. Again not a huge thing but it ties things together and would have made that later scene make more sense. .

Jordan Haddow

Nice reaction. I don't want to accidentally let a spoiler slip, so I'll be brief. Don't worry about not getting that Angel returned. You're not the only one that didn't catch on right away. It was so random. I mean, Ghiles nor Willow did any magic and the only thing anyone else did was Buffy moving on. Also, you have to love Ghilee. Back in season 1, he was like a fish out of water with Buffy. Hadn't had a clue as to what she was thinking. Two seasons later and he can see right through the masks she put up to the pain she was feeling. His letting on that the spell was a ruse is always such a shock the first time.

Reference of the week: when Buffy says "I'm the one being single-white-female'd" she's referring to the 1992 movie Single White Female where a woman takes in a new roommate who ends up impersonating and eventually trying to kill her. The best part of this episode in my opinion comes down to just one line: "There is no spell." Giles never told Buffy she needed to talk about what happened, never pushed, but quietly led her to open up in her own time. And the way this is shown in just a few seemingly throwaway scenes throughout the episode is simply wonderful.

CeNedra

Okay 🤔 I'm interested to see your reaction to season 3 as despite it being a big favourite for most fans it isn't a favourite of mine 🙄🤣 bet you're really surprised at that 😊 tbf it has 2 of my top 10 episodes but other than that I generally skip the rest. I think it depends on how much you like Faith as to if you like season 3 😂 btw only season 1 is below season 3 for me.. Okay, rant over 😂

CeNedra

Literally every reactor needs the single white female ref explained, makes me feel older than when reactors say 'back in the day' 🤣

Shaun Houghton

I shall ponder the implications of that revelation.

Shaun Houghton

His return was due to the power of the one ring.

CeNedra

😂😂😂

Devon Martin

Eliza Dushku is such a badass in this show! She's such a complex character that adds another element to the slayer lineage. I so want to get "five by five" tattoo :) lol...Joyce is every mom coming to terms with their child being different <3, i love her for that. I came out to my family almost 7 years ago. This show has such a way with real life themes.....Season 3 is when i feel like these characters are in their element. I think you''ll enjoy this season :)

Ron Fehr

Just remember, Domi. Nobody knows that Angel is back yet. It could still be interesting.

Ron Fehr

It's probably mostly the dark hair, but does anyone else think that Domi looks a little like Faith?

KT

You're in such a good position in regards to Faith, already knowing how great she is but not knowing anything about her. I'm excited for everything to come.

Kirsten (Heavenli24)

I got excited over your excitement for this episode :P. You're in a unique position where you already know of Faith, but haven't 'officially' met her yet, so your perspective on her arrival to the show is different to any other reactor. I love that Giles makes up a whole spell just to get Buffy to open up about what really happened with Angel. He doesn’t try to make her talk, just nudges her in that direction until she feels comfortable enough to tell him and Willow what really happened. It is interesting that they brought Angel back so soon… I guess that because DB was still a regular and not a guest star, he had to be in each of the episodes… but showing him only popping up in Buffy’s dreams would probably have become weird and boring if it had gone on for much longer.

Domi E

Yep I totally kinda missed that when I watched originally, and only noticed on my rewatch while editing. Sorry!

Domi E

I’ll def rewatch it, cause it for sure went over my head. That’s why I was telling y’all I need to start posting a bit slower, unfortunately I’ve been missing a lot of small details 😭I’m sorry

Domi E

For sure, his relationship development with Buffy is incredible and I love it! Great point!

Domi E

So subtle and beautiful, I love it! And I hadn’t gotten the reference so thank you, haha ❤️And hey CeNedra, no feeling old on my Patreon it’s not allowed here!!!

Domi E

Very interesting! I thought it was a consensus S3 was better than S2 but I have to say, I’m hearing different opinions, so I’m excited to watch for myself!!

Domi E

Thank you Devon ❤️🌈And you should totally get that tattoo!!

Domi E

Yeppp, for sure!! I’m so curious!!!

Domi E

Omg I totally don’t at all but since this is such a flattering comment I’m gonna stick with a THANK YOU!!!!

Domi E

Yes for sure!!! I’m so excited!!!

Domi E

Aw yay!! And yep that’s true, using him in dreams would get boring, I’m just so surprised at how quick this storyline is developing.. but we shall see!

Justafox305

If you ever saw the movie "Bring it on" the first one. Faith is on there as well.

Carl

Don't be sorry! It's easy to miss especially when you're reacting and analyzing.

UTU49

In the episode, Giles said that "Kakistos" translates as "the worst of the worst". My guess is that you and Giles were talking about the same word.

Ron Fehr

What I meant to say was that some of your features remind me of Faith. Namely your dark hair and the way it looks when you wear it down.

Ron Fehr

You're welcome Domi.

Steve Quast

Yeah, pretty close anyway.

CeNedra

It isn't a popular opinion, season 2 is my second favourite season .. season 3 has some amazing episodes but ... I'll explain why I don't like it when you've watched it 🙂

UTU49

Holy moly. Your reaction was a stark reminder of just how enormous an episode this is... so mission accomplished! During this viewing, I was really struck by the fact that they didn't simply introduce Faith in this episode and be content with that. No. In this ONE EPISODE, we see both Faith and Buffy go through enormous personal journeys. These were journeys that were multi-faceted emotional upheavals that take them through multiple stages. They also start forming their relationship. And Angel (sort of?) returns… right after Buffy tries to emotionally let him go! Both Buffy and Faith are wrestling with issues from the past… and issues in the present. That is a fuckton of story for Faith’s very FIRST episode. (I try not to swear unnecessarily, but I stand by my choice of the term “fuckton”, lol.) I’ve seen entire seasons of other shows that didn’t do anything as significant as this one episode. And it’s episode 3! Once again, I have far more thoughts than I can do justice to, so I’m just going to share a couple without being perfectionistic about how I prioritize topics. The Buffy writers were ambitious and decisive. They rarely delayed things to milk them for dramatic tension. In general, in the Buffyverse, the dramatic tension comes from what IS happening, not from what is NOT happening. In other words, the dramatic tension is not frequently generated by what the writers are withholding from the audience… the way we have all seen on other shows. I loved hearing all your thoughts, even the ones that included incorrect guesses, assumptions, or interpretations. To be one of my favourite reactors, you don’t have to get everything right (or remember that you intended to take your glasses off ^_^). The main thing that is important to me in a reactor is that they care about the characters and are invested in the story. Domi, you are awesome to watch, simply for caring so much about the characters, and being invested in the show. Everything else is just minor details. I’m glad you didn’t find out about your misinterpretation in time to edit out the inaccurate statements that you made, because once again, hearing your (sometimes inaccurate) thoughts, does a fantastic job of immersing us in this particular point in the series. I just love hearing so many thoughts from someone who has only seen episodes 1 – 3 of Season 3, and none of the rest of it. These are thoughts that we could not be exposed to any other way. We are completely incapable of having all the thoughts you did because we have seen it all multiple times. Um… when I like someone’s content, I have a weird habit of sometimes going overboard on the praise… almost as if I’m trying to embarrass the person with praise. Did I do it again? A little bit? I want to very briefly (and very vaguely) address the Season 2 vs. Season 3 comparison. Like most comparisons between any two things, Seasons 2 and 3 share some strengths, but they each also lack some of the strengths of the other. Your assessment of those strengths will be your own. Obviously, that’s obvious, but it’s my way of saying, “I don’t think anyone will be upset if you like one season better than the other.”. Lots of us like both seasons. There really aren’t any Seasons of Buffy that I dislike. I thoroughly love many of the seasons. The remaining seasons, I love large chunks of. I’m not entirely certain how coherent this is because I’ve been sleeping extremely poorly recently. Anyway, it’s going to be fun to watch Season 3 with you. ^_^

Domi E

Oh yes I heard about that!!

Domi E

Aw this comment is so incredibly kind and it just made me smile so hard so thank you ❤️and don’t be so apologetic, you make perfect sense!

Bri

I've watched this so many times and today was the first time I noticed Willow's response to Faith's Giles is hot line/Buffy's Ew. 🤭😉

The Value of Life

18:02 Domi: Ok, let's go Faith, please show up. 18:03 Faith shows up, unrecognized, in the background. That there is reactor gold! BtVS is all about subverting expectations. You expect a major character to have a dramatic entrance, so the show introduces us to Faith as just an anonymous person dancing in the background, then gradually nudges us to pay more attention until we realize she's someone important.

Domi E

100%! They did a great job with it!

UTU49

Yeah, Briony, I've always thought that was a fantastic detail.

The Value of Life

Wow, I've probably seen this ep 5 or 6 times and never caught that.

Phoenix Dawn

Yeah, Willow does NOT raise her hand, it is brilliant!!!

cruzinbosco

Yes! Finally, we meet Faith! I've been waiting for you to get to this episode since you started the series. Faith is my favorite character in the Buffyverse other than Buffy herself, which is obviously saying a lot. Since you uploaded your first reaction, you've reminded me of Faith, or Eliza I guess. Just your general look and mannerisms, and I just love it. Basically, you're freaking cool! Very excited about this season, it's definitely one of my favorites and it's a great ride with a lot of strong episodes. It might actually be my favorite but honestly, I haven't been able to decide on an actual favorite season in my 20+ years of watching and rewatching this series. I just know you're going to enjoy this season and I'll enjoy watching you watch it.

Domi E

Omg I am totally the most uncool person ever but that just made my day I’m so flattered by this comparison so THANK YOU! I’ve been looking forward to meeting her and I can’t wait to get more and more into S3!
