I think that the word Beauty in the title may not have referred to a particular person, but was intended as a synonym for attractiveness.

Tim Pierce

Domi, you should know by now faculty at Sunnydale never survive after being nice to Buffy.

Domi E

Tim, you should know I’m big on denial 😜

Steve Quast

That's why Snyder's so mean to her. He knows what's up.

Steve Quast

There is a LOT going on in this episode. It's hit or miss for fans and reactors alike. Some like it, some not so much. Personally I hold it as one of my favorites of the early part of the season. Maybe they could have waited longer to either have Buffy meet Angel, or for Angel to come back to himself (or both), but for what we got I think they did it pretty well. And it was epic seeing Oz wolf out at just the right time to turn the tables on the scumbag. "Time's up. Rules change." As for Giles getting shot in the derierre with the tranquilizer gun, I think he said it best: "Bloody priceless..."

Steve Quast

Apparently when Spike drove away with Drusilla last season he forgot to bring her dolls. C'mon, Spike! Now they're orphans!

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

There is, as you say, sooooo much going on. First off, I don't think it's Xander's fault that Oz got out. But it IS his fault he came in and immediately decided to fall asleep. That ain't great. But how was he supposed to know the window was open, and who the heck didn't check that? In the end I think Oz should have checked it and whoever was there when he locked himself up. PLUS, Giles isn't mad at all when he finds Buffy asleep. I love Giles with all my heart but he does have Buffy goggles on sometimes ;) I really liked Mr Platt (RIP) and Buffy soooo needs a therapist :'( Her life just got so complicated. Now what's she going to do?! Trivia: SMG missed her mark in the library and ED actually hit her. They had to redub ED's lines (who was basically just saying 'OMG!!') but SMG kept going so they kept the take. The scene when she's talking to Giles. Argghhhhh!!! From Giles' side, I HATE that she didn't tell him. He opened up about Jenny, which I'm sure is VERY rare for him, and then she lied to him. If you watch him he is seriously freaking out (in the profile shot his eyes are all over the place and he's doing his classic 'pretend to be find' mannerisms). Buffy even uses a line that Jenny used - 'the hills are alive' - but then stops herself when she realises from Giles' look, I think. AND after Buffy walks away to talk to Willow, Giles just sits on the stairs, staring in to space for sooooo looooong. :'( From Buffy's POV she is freaking out about finding Angel and THEN Giles mentions Jenny. OK, she's already said it was 'a dream' but I think that's why, later on, she tells Platt that she can't talk to him even after thinking about it for a bit. I still HATE that she lies to him though, but I do understand. I also think she can't talk to Willow (or Xander) because of The Lie from Becoming Part 2. She knows Xander hates Angel but as far as we are aware she has not discovered that Willow did not say 'kick his ass'. Good point that she could have talked to Faith, but I guess she doesn't know her that well yet. Cordy has gone MIA (:/) and Oz is a bit preoccupied lol And Giles gets taken down by a tranquilliser dart lol

zerofk

You know I hadn't actually noticed that until watching along with Domi. Poor Miss Edith :-(

zerofk

I like that the show tackles the issue of domestic abuse - including the gaslighting and the victim making excuses for the perpetrator. The execution isn't perfect but I think it's fine. Oh and I like Scott. I don't think Buffy should break up with him. Especially not to get back with blah Angel.

Domi E

Very true!! I can’t believe some people don’t like this episode, I actually really loved it!!

Domi E

Absolutely great points 😭And I can’t believe Eliza actually hit her hahaha OOPS

Domi E

Totally agree with the first part! On the second part.... Come on zero we have to agree Angel > Scott 😋but that’s a question for next episode......

Domi E

I’ve just rewatched the scene and now I’m laughing so much, POOR SMG 😭Though props on not breaking character, she really is so professional and incredible!!

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

I mean, I do like Scott, and at this point I was still Angel grrrrrrr, but Scott doesn't really compare in Buffy's eyes does he ;)

Domi E

I liked Scott up until Homecoming, then he pissed me off 👿

zerofk

I'm reaaaly not a fan of the Buffy / Angel relationship. They "fell in love" after exchanging all but 5 sentences. And after they became a couple it was not much better really; all they do is kiss and talk about how much they love each other. There's no substance. Buuut I realise other people feel very different about this so I'll shut up now :-)

Domi E

Actually I get that, it makes sense! Just because people ship them doesn’t mean you have to!

UTU49

Yeah! Ha ha! Maybe Snyder actually really LIKES Buffy, but he mistreats her, hoping that it will help him avoid getting killed like the other faculty members. So he kind of likes her, it's just that he likes himself a lot more.

UTU49

Hey, Domi. I like this one too. There are a couple of factors that some people perceive as flaws big enough to prevent them from enjoying the episode. For example, the Pete-Debbie subplot comes out of the blue late in the episode and probably would have felt more satisfying if it had been introduced in the first act. And some people aren't thrilled about the depiction of abuse -- some viewers have protested the subject matter and others have protested the execution. I think they have a point but it doesn't bother me enough to affect how meaningful I find this episode. BTW, you and other reactors seemed very disapproving of Buffy's statement, "Don't get hit.", because they interpret it as blaming the victim. I don't see it that way at all. I see it as Buffy saying that you need to remove yourself from a situation that endangers you. We need to remember that Buffy is a kid, with no training whatsoever in counseling and probably below average awareness of issues like abuse and mental health. Am I off base here?

UTU49

"You see, Miss Edith, if you had been good you could watch with the rest." A line that always stood out to me. Drusilla being a disciplinarian with her dolls... in aid of nothing.

Domi E

That makes total sense! I was taken aback by her commentary but I don’t think she means harm. Other that that moment though, I’m quite curious to understand more of the negative POV in regards to the depiction of abuse.

UTU49

BTW, Eliza Dushku (Faith) and Mercedes McNab (Harmony) are 2 of the only young actors on the show who were actually the same age as their characters. I believe Sarah Gellar was about 3 years older than her character, which by TV standards is very good. More BTW, Mercedes McNab is the only Buffyverse actor I know of who is from my area of the world: Vancouver, Canada. I guess I'm sort of on the opposite corner of the Americas from you.

Kirsten (Heavenli24)

Great reaction :). I have mixed feelings on this one - I enjoy most of it (I love Buffy discovering Angel is back and trying to figure out how to handle it), but the Pete and Debbie parts bring it down for me, as I just don’t think their storyline was that well-executed. Having said that, I enjoyed the episode more through seeing your reaction to it than if I’d been watching it on my own... the tension and anticipation you had for what was going to happen made me feel that too :P. One of my favourite lines/exchanges in this episode is: Willow: “it's not your boyfriend who's the cold-blooded…(to Oz) Jelly doughnut?” And then later, Oz says: “Hey, I may be a cold-blooded jelly doughnut, but my timing is impeccable.” …which just makes me chuckle :P

UTU49

I'm pretty sure that "Beauty" was actually referring to Giles.

Steve Quast

Watching abuse is uncomfortable, but sadly it's something that happens in real life, so I don't mind when shows depict it as long as it's done appropriately.

Ron Fehr

One thing still baffles me. Angel came out of the hell dimension naked. If he was still feral, why would he think to get pants, and where did they come from?

Steve Quast

I've mainly seen criticism from the angle of, there's too much happening, they brought back Angel too soon, they felt nothing at the ending scene between Buffy and Angel, etc. All fair points, but overall the episode just works for me and it's one of my favorite stand alones (which includes a bit of plot as well).

Domi E

I can understand parts of that for sure, but I thought the ending scene with Buffy/Angel was everything ❤️

Domi E

Oh that’s so cool!!!

Domi E

Aw thank you Kirsten! And haha that’s a great detail I hadn’t caught actually!!

Domi E

Haha, Angel is a man with important priorities

Antonio

I still can't understand why the "Don't get hit" line was left in - it's just so out of character for Buffy to say, and obviously not at all what a victim of domestic abuse needs to hear. There is some great writing in this episode - the scenes with Platt for instance - but that line is so...ugh.

Lunarwind

Yup, Canada is indeed a cold place! Ba-dum-tish

Domi E

It honestly makes no sense... I don’t get it either.

Ron Fehr

I think that the Pete-Debbie storyline was alluded to a bit in the first act, but not the abuse aspect of it of course.

Ron Fehr

The exclusion of Xander when Buffy went to the school therapist hadn't even occurred to me until you pointed it out, Domi. What you said totally made sense.

Rey

Probably in the same vain as "don't die". Essentially fight back or don't get yourself in that situation. I know there's a psychological aspect of it but there is truth to that whether or not the victim can see it.

Jordan Haddow

I don't know. I personally have always thought they had 3 beauties. Buffy, Willow, and whatserface. I think it just would have sounded really stupid to call the episode Beauties and the Beasts. Each of them played an important role opposite of their respective "beast".

Jordan Haddow

I don't know if Snyder actually likes anyone. I think he sees people in 2 camps. Those he steps on and those he needs to kiss their ass to get ahead. That's one thing about Joss and the Mutant Enemy people. I find that if a character is bad, but not the big bad, they tend to be a bit two dimensional. I agree though that it would be cool if that was the case.

Jordan Haddow

I think another element of Buffy saying to avoid being hit is her unique perspective on the issue. There are a number of things in this show that can seem off because people forget to view it from a slayer's perspective rather than a regular person. Buffy has been fighting life and death battles for years now. She has to stay vigilant and constantly be learning from her mistakes to just stay alive. So to her, avoiding a black eye, is simply that. Avoid it, get away from the guy. It's hard to empathize with how the girl feels because Buffy has a tonne of unnatural strength. There may be a bit of irony in the comment as well. Not long before that scene Buffy had been hit in the face by Angel, yet she is keeping close to him. So, in effect, the isn't listening to her own advice. I prefer the slayer can't empathize well perspective more myself though.

Jordan Haddow

Scotts a dufus and was never right for Buffy. I personally think she only gave him the time of day because she was on the rebound. Never mind that Buffy can bend steel bars with her bare hands, throw a full grown man across the room with ease, and take a blow from a bat and wave it off like an annoying insect. The guy is far too hesitant and weak willed for someone like Buffy. I'm not saying he isn't a good guy, but lets face it. Buffy has a type and he isn't it. You can see it in all her scenes with him, her affection always seems forced, not natural.

litafanforlife

The Buffy/Angel stuff absolutely makes the episode for me. The scene where Angel falls to his knees in front of Buffy is so emotional.

Jordan Haddow

Great reaction. This is one of those episodes, for me at least, that is so good and yet so bad at the same time. From what I heard, this episode was supposed to coincide with some sort of thing involving focusing on bringing public attention to domestic abuse. That said, the other parts were awesome. Character development for Oz and Willow were great. Now the Buffy/Angel stuff. Let's not kid ourselves, is all the stuff we really cared about. They packed in so much into this one episode that it took me quite a few viewings to really get at what they were doing. There is always the controversy of why Buffy stayed quiet about Angels return. I think it was because she was afraid of the position being the slayer put her in. Doesn't make sense? Angel returns and is wild. Dead bodies about, mangled. As the slayer, she should have killed him right away. For most of the episode, she was living in terror of having to kill Angel and she was trying anything she could to find a way not to. It wasn't until he said her name and hugged her that she finally had a glimmer of hope that she didn't have to kill him again. Until she made a decision whether to kill him or not, I don't think telling anyone in her group was even a notion in her mind. How could it be? At least that's how I saw it after a while. Still, loved your reaction. Especially at the end. Angel hugging Buffy's waist while she cries and that tune from the S2 finale playing in the background to remind you of just before she sent him to hell. Hard not to feel that scene.

Antonio

That makes sense in that it's one episode after she said "Don't die" to Faith, and perhaps the writers were playing on that a little, but the two girls in question were very different ie. one a Slayer and the other...er...very much not a Slayer. In any case, I think it was the aggressive tone in which Buffy used it that irked me the most, like Debbie was letting herself 'get hit'.

Domi E

Oh yes Jordan that’s a great point about Buffy’s persona!

Domi E

Yeah I totally get what you’re saying Anthony and I agree. While Buffy clearly didn’t mean it in a bad way (since Rey pointed out, she uses the “Don’t die” a lot), I think it was def too much for the moment

Domi E

Completely agreed!!

Domi E

You’re right. It def makes more sense now as to why she hasn’t told people he’s back, so thank you!

Thom Purdy

"I don't like seeing these people suffer". This really ain't the show for you. LOL J/K

Nicholas J Hoover

This is one of my favorites too. Some people seem to think there's to much going on but all three threads are different faces of the same issue with buffy, Willow and the gf all reacting in different ways. I think it's kind of brilliant.

Nicholas J Hoover

Yeah it's not as if she hadn't been abused before by him, this was certainly not first time. He's clearly been abusive for a while and she just kept making excuses instead of leaving him. Not saying what buffy said was the right thing to say, but it kind of makes sense as a thing to say if you're giving something a 'come to Jesus' speech (the metaphor not an actually finger to Jesus speech in case that's not a common metaphor in Brazil)

Bud Haven

When SMG is reading Call of the Wild at the beginning and end of the episode I get chills every time. I've watched it more times than I 'd care to admit. If she did audio books I'd buy in a minute. When Buffy is in Mr. Platt's office you could see the desperation in Buffy's face. Probably the scariest moment of the show.

Domi E

She really is an incredible actress in so many ways!

SK Elkins

Late comment here, but when you were talking about Willow's calm when dealing with the corpse, I immediately flashed back to your favorite call-back episode (and mine!): S01E03 Witch! Remember the scene in the science lab, when Xander is too squeamish to get the "eye of newt" from the dead frog, and so Willow just reaches over, calmly removes the eyeball for him, drops it in the potion, and then continues on with what she was doing? I guess she's always been pretty cool and efficient when it comes to scientific interactions with dead things.
