No reason to blame Joss Whedon for Cordy’s arc. I assume that he and David Greenwalt realized they weren’t taking advantage of her character as they might but it seems that it was for good dramatic reasons. Your comment about how every episode is becoming top-tier (which continues throughout the series, with a few exceptions) is an indication that they knew what they were doing. They weren’t ready to expand the group too much from its core until post-high school. So, what did they do? They gave Cordy the second role in a new show. So that she’s kind of hanging around this season, as Angel seems often to be, is somewhat the case. I look at it that we get great secondary characters in the process, who will become primary characters in their own show. Seems like a plus to me. From my understanding (though I’ve read little about it), the Joss-Charisma problems didn’t start until late in Angel. If you decide to gripe about season four Cordy (and even blame Joss Whedon) then I’ll be all ears. I’m very much looking forward to your reactions then. On Faith’s non-presence, my guess is it’s largely due to her contract, but they make good use of the limitation by showing that she is isolated, which may not give us the Faith rush we want, but makes sense in terms of the storyline. The storyline is everything in BtVS. And I’m glad it was/is. It is this which makes it the best show in television history. Good points (among many) about alternate dimension Buffy showing what it would be like without their little group, their community, their family. I’m reminded of what Spike said in “School Hard”: “A slayer with family and friends. That sure as hell wasn't in the brochure.” This is what distinguishes Buffy from, as far as we know, every slayer that has come previously. And what she was without them, as alternate dimension Buffy, highlights some of the temptations and bad decisions to come in her future. For, though she does have family and friends, it doesn’t always feel that way.

The good news, Cordelia is still alive.

Ron Fehr

More good news, a Cordy-centric episode (mostly).

Tim Pierce

Jenny would never have been sent to keep an eye on Angel and Buffy because Buffy was never there. Same as to why there is no Faith. She was never made a Slayer. Also, Angel knew about Buffy because everything that happened before Buffy came to Sunnydale (Angel seeing Buffy in LA) still happened. I haven't finished the episode yet, if you naturally realize this, just ignore me.

Anitusar

Vampire-Willow, yeah :) What more does one need ....

Nica Marie

Welcome to the Wishverse. A fan favorite. The girl drained in the machine at the factory also has a small role in the movie Clueless. So glad you enjoyed this ep.

Steve Quast

"I wish this show would get even better." Done!

Steve Quast

The demon at the beginning just wanted to know if you were interested in his lord and savior Kthulu.

Negative

Great episode I love "what if" scenarios. Xander and Willow make excellent vampires. Although I wonder why anyone would even continue to live in Sunnydale if it got that bad. Hell, even with Buffy around there's still a pretty high body count at the school. You would think families might look into moving to another town. Got some loyal Sunnydale residents here.

Dave Ford

Your comment on why Buffy and the gang (The Scoobies, btw) didn't check up on Cordy - well, remember Cordy has now lost all her friends - she despises what Xander and Willow did to her, and her old circle won't take her back either. I wouldn't be surprised that if Buffy had reached out to her, she wouldn't have returned the call. Her reaction at the Bronze shows she think Buffy would be on 'Xanders side' - and she's not wrong. Willow and Xander can't check up on her because of guilt and Buffy is stuck in the middle and is sticking with her closet friends. I feel desperately sad for Cordy in this episode, but I can understand how awkward the situation must be for the other three too.

Dave Ford

Is Buffy's death worse than her blankly walking through the ashes of Angel without her even blinking? Or Oz killing Bad Willow?

Devon Martin

Those pesky vengeance demons 😈 🖤....this is another solid episode 👍

Steve Quast

It's interesting, I just watched Riley Lynn's reaction to "Killed by Death" (remember the Freddy Kruger guy). Recall that in the hospital evil Angel shows up and Xander says to him "You're gonna die. And I'm gonna be there." Yeah, this just made me think of that. So, it's fitting that Xander is the one who killed Angel in this episode since those two have never gotten along. Also, real time Willow cheated on Oz, so in this alternate universe Oz kills vampire Willow. And then the Master kills Buffy. It's all very poetic in a twisted sense.

Kirsten (Heavenli24)

Love this episode - it's just so fun to see the 'what ifs' of the alternate reality. And it just shows how much Buffy's friends and support system have helped her and made her stronger :).

Steve Quast

So this episode DID technically feature a big bad. It just wasn't the big bad from THIS season.

Antonio

Lol your reaction at 25:45 and 25:55 - I thought your camera had broken!

Steve Quast

I totally dug Willow and Xander as a vampire couple, and as vampires in general.

Steve Quast

PS If Alyson ever gives you that look and says "Bored now...." Run!

Justafox305

Domi - "if you haven't seen all of buffy don't listen to the next words out my mouth" me a rebel, listens. lol

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

Great reaction, I may have to screen shot some of those expressions :D In Becoming 1 they showed Angel in LA so I'm guessing he went to Sunnydale to wait for her and Giles was there but for some reason Buffy went to Cleveland. So Angel tried to help but got caught and Giles continued on despite the fact that his bosses are clearly ignoring him :( I also assume that Willow and Xander were turned along with Jesse (who might have subsequently died) in the first episode because Buffy wasn't there to save them. Then of course, Buffy dies in this one because Xander is the one who brought her back to life in our reality. So in this universe the Prophecy came true :((( I love how it shows what Buffy is like without Giles and her friends. She seems totally estranged from her watcher, who didn't seem to know where she was, and very angry and isolated and hurting, as you said. And Giles is not only still fighting the good fight but he's also got himself a little found family <3 And it's Oz and Larry and Nancy (not sure if we're supposed to know her tbh). I also love Giles' hope. He says to Buffy that he has to believe in a better world and to Anyanka 'because it has to be' which is so :'( Considering what's going on it's remarkable really. And Buffy and Giles with this weird dynamic is so great. She's so dismissive and, frankly, rude, but in a way he's the same, trying to help, trying to work with her, but there's no connection :( And poor Cordy. Buffy did at least go out to ask if she was OK at the Bronze but I guess she's in a tough position, wanting to be loyal to her friends but also knowing that Cordy is hurting. You're right though, the trio are a bit of a clique. The characters outside of them are always held at a bit of distance IMO. When Jenny died it was mostly just Giles grieving with Willow a bit but Buffy and Xander didn't really seem to know her that well and Buffy mostly seemed to feel guilty and sorry for Giles rather than grieving for Jenny specifically. I bring it up because it's like you said about if Oz died only Willow would probably be properly grieving. I dunno, I'm not saying they wouldn't be sad but it's hard for other people to break in to that group. Oh, and that machine is one of the most horrific things I've ever seen! =:O

CeNedra

I have so been waiting for this one and you posted while I was at work again 🤣🤣🤣 made me hurry up and finish though 😍

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

And this deserves its own post...JENNY SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE!! I know you've watched ahead so I can say that I would have much preferred her to be in this episode. It would have been actually Jenny, even if it had been a different version, plus, THIS is the scene we all deserved: Giles in the library, looking worried and dishevelled (did I mention that dishevelled Giles is the best Giles? lol) when the door bangs open and he jumps because, vampire? But then he turns and his face lights up in a smile. You know the one, the one we haven't seen since the last time he saw Jenny alive and he thought she was coming over to his place, the one that was so common in the first half of season 2. Yes, THAT smile. The happy Giles smile because, damn, I want to see that smile again (sorry, I may be digressing) Anyway, you see that smile and then it cuts to his POV and it's Jenny walking in to the library and, ahhhhhhh <3 Plus, we'd have Giles and Jenny helping to save those people and Giles and Jenny talking to Buffy - and I just bet Jenny would have something to say about Buffy disrespecting Giles like that lol Of course, there's a painful downside to all of this because, cut to the last scene. Giles and Jenny are fighting with Anyanka, Giles rips off her pendant and gets ready to smash it. "How do you know the other world is any better than this?" "Because it has to be." Except it's not! Because at least in this world he has Jenny. SMASH :'( OK, I may have thought about this scenario a lot lol

zerofk

I'm pretty sure killing off Cordelia was put into the episode specifically to mess with Domi. This is a pretty interesting episode. Not only do we get a "what if" of Sunnydale without the slayer (a mess), but also of Buffy without her friends (tough, but ultimately not up to defeating the Master), of Xander and Willow as vampires (way cool), and of Angel without Buffy (useless, obviously).

HuntingSwan

Yes Domi! Season 3 is all top notch and it's cool you're recognizing that consistent quality!

Tom Tattershall

Wow, I love and hate this idea. Although I do believe Jenny would have been sent to Sunnydale because she was watching Angel to see he was still suffering, not because of Buffy being there.

Tom Tattershall

I was a bit surprised that Darla and Luke weren't in this episode. One or both of the actors may have been unavailable or the writers had so much fun using Willow and Xander in their place, they couldn't find room for Darla and Luke in the episode. They could have been mentioned. Maybe Angel managed to kill them and that's why the Master kept Angel alive to torture him.

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

Yes, it's definitely a love/hate scenario lol And I agree, Jenny was sent to watch Angel initially so she would be there...with lots of time on her hands because Angel isn't going anywhere and is DEFINITELY miserable lol

The Suburban Big Man

The reason the writing is becoming so good is probably because they finally got a regular writing staff, and not just contracted out writers. Writers who understand the overall arching developments that are planned. Also, Dean Batali and Rob Des Hotel are no longer part of it. In Season 2, it was Joss, Marti, David, and Batali and Des Hotel. This season, we have Jane Espenson, Douglas Petrie, and David Fury joining the writers' room.

Jordan Haddow

It would have been cool. i bet they thought about it, but i think the cost would have been too high. They probably blew a bunch of their budget on getting the Master there.

Jordan Haddow

Absolutely. She gives Angelus a run for his money at being sadistic.

UTU49

Nicole Bilderback, I think.

Jordan Haddow

The really sad thing is, she probably was there. Remember though, she remained hidden in the background until Buffy started having a closer relationship with Angel. So Jenny inserted herself into their group to keep a closer eye on the situation. So, the only reason Giles even knew Jenny at all was because of Buffy. In that universe, Giles and Jenny are strangers.

Rey

Obviously they loved Cordy and had enough fans liking Cordy that she had a more starring role in Angel. Eliza Dushku was under 18 I think so she couldn’t work as long, nor was she intended to be a regular.

UTU49

Many shows have done alternative reality episodes, "what if" episodes, or alternate timelines. I think this is one of the best ones, because even though the events of this episode are undone, they still reflect on who the characters are. Giles, for example. His desperate belief in a better world is both sad and heroic. Even though in our main reality, Giles did not do that, he is still CAPABLE of it. And in that sense, we are still learning about the characters even though all the events are no longer a part of their reality.

Jordan Haddow

Great reaction. I know right, Cordy dies. My first time watching I couldn't believe they killed her. First they fake us out that she died, then they go and alternate universe kill her. Sheesh. Sure got us, you know the ones who hadn't seen Angel's show by this episode, to sit up and think how much we would actually miss her if she was gone. I really love this episode, if for nothing else, Vampire Willow. She's so joyfully sadistic. She would give Angelus a run for his money. Imagine if Angel was actually Angelus and he was with Vampire Willow. Wow, now that's a world I would not want to live in. It was a cool episode and I am looking forward to what is to come.

Nate

Love this episode. The prophecy from the end of season one, of Buffy being killed by the Master came true in the wishverse too. I can't help but love vamp Willow and Xander, Giles looks so sad and broken though.

Phoenix Dawn

Season 3 is definitely one of my favourite seasons of Buffy!

FernWithy

As to checking up on Cordy, we know Xander had called fifty or sixty times, and I doubt she'd have taken Willow's calls, either. Buffy has less excuse, but she might have assumed that Cordy would see her as part of the problem. The episode wasn't really Faith-less, though. Buffy in the Wishverse was, essentially, Faith--the Slayer who is cut off from all her connections.

Steve Quast

Always thought it would be interesting if Angelus and vampire Willow met each other.

KT

Great reaction! This episode is seriously hype as hell, and retroactively makes the Master a more interesting and threatening villain upon rewatches of season 1 (at least for me). The Master didn't get a ton of chances to feel dangerous because he was trapped almost the whole time. If he hadn't been so sassy and charismatic, he would have been pretty boring tbh. This ep shows you what would have happened if Buffy had lost and he had remained free, so the stakes feel more real. It has often felt like they don't really know what to do with Cordelia. I mean they give her some of the most bananas lines, it's incredibly impressive that Charisma can deliver them so well and make Cordelia feel cohesive even when she's not given much to do. Or is written to be quick as a whip in one ep (Killed by Death) and totally clueless in another (Passion). I attribute it to her being so unique a character. Ironically, Whedon does really know how to write Cordelia, some of her best moments are his. Which makes his treatment of her down the road even more aggravating (if that's even possible). But she's great in this one, I love how when Giles is trying to calm her down shes like NO. LISTEN TO ME. And how quick she is to realize and admit she was wrong to make the wish. And despite how tragic and disturbing it is, Xander and Willow sucking the life out of her together is truly one of my favorite moments of the episode.

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

I don't know, Jenny was working at the school so I imagine she was in this universe too. Obviously without Moloch maybe they'd never talked but in MY head they end up with each other anyway because, well, it's meant to be dammit! lol I'd say it was more Willow's 'fault' really, she's the one who scanned Moloch into the internet, so that probably didn't happen in this universe. And I wouldn't say Jenny did any of it on purpose. I know some people do think that, but she sure took her time if that was her aim. And really it was Giles who went to see her at the end of IRYJ and Giles who brought her back in Prophesy Girl to help, it wasn't her idea.

Ron Fehr

I hope that you don't consider this a spoiler, but yes, that's the Anya that we are supposed to meet. Tara comes later, of course.

GaveUp

Just my opinion but better to play it safe and not confirm things or reference the parts we know Domi has seen. Given the lack of prior season context things appear to be more murky in the memory banks than people think. That’ll probably change deeper in to the show as the puzzle is put together, but only time will tell.

Ron Fehr

I hope that I didn't do any harm. My intention was merely to confirm her suspicions.

Dan

I would say that's a spoiler because otherwise certain arcs might have been more of a surprise. (I was happy Domi didn't think that.)

Ron Fehr

I like how quickly you put things together when you first saw The Master. I don't know if everyone who saw the episode for the first time would have realized that.

Steve Quast

Can you delete this comment? I would say this is a spoiler and, when she was talking about Anya, I thought to myself, I hope nobody spoils this for her in the comments.

Ron Fehr

I personally don't see how this is a spoiler. She already had her suspicions. I didn't give away any future stories.

Ron Fehr

But delete the comment if you feel that is what you should do.

Domi E

For future reference, yes I do consider this a spoiler. I don’t have a lot of things figured out so unless I actually pose it as a question I’d prefer people not confirm or deny my suspicions! In this case you’re all good because I’ve seen Doppelgangland, so with Anya being back I assumed she was THE Anya, but please be careful next time. It might seem small but I’m trying to really go in with as little info as possible.

Ron Fehr

Okay. Sorry about that, Domi.

Domi E

I freaking love Cordy centric episodes!!

Domi E

Oooh, smart. That makes sense! I guess I was just too desperate to see Jenny hahaha

Domi E

She’s truly the best!

Domi E

Oh nice!! And yep, I freaking LOVE the wishverse! Too cool!!

Domi E

LOL, I’m not sure that I am, Mr. Demon sir

Domi E

LOL so true! It truly is a mystery why people still chose to stick around!

Domi E

Yeah I totally understand how the others feel awkward, but I think the least they could do is reach out, like Xander did. Because, even if she doesn’t wanna see them or talk to them right now, at least it would show that they care, and she would know it.

Domi E

Damn that was all a lot, but I have to say that personally Buffy’s death is as devastating as it gets

Domi E

It really is too great!!

Domi E

Oh damn! That’s a great point, I totally hadn’t made all these connections!!

Domi E

Hahahaha. I think I might have had a hard time processing everything

Domi E

Is it bad if I do too?? Haha

Domi E

And omg yes Aly’s performance was beyond creepy and too great!!

Domi E

Ahhh!!! DON’T LISTEN!! I don’t know where anything comes in so it’s always a mess😂I hope you finish Buffy soon so you don’t run any risks of spoilers!

cruzinbosco

One of my favorite episodes of the series and I truly think this is my favorite season. It's just sooo good!

Kirsten (Heavenli24)

Nicole Bilderback was in Bring It On with Eliza Dushku as well :)

Domi E

Oh awesome! I haven’t seen it yet but it’s on my list!

Domi E

Great points as always RJ!

Domi E

Aw no I’m sorry! Haha. At least you finished 🙌🏼🙌🏼

Domi E

You’re always trying to hurt me, and I hope you know you’re succeeding because 😭💔

Domi E

You guys are making me sad imagining Jenny was there but we just didn’t see her :(

Domi E

“useless obviously” LOLOL. Yep it really showed us a lot! And I knew it was purposely to hurt me, it’s so rude!!!!

Domi E

It really is incredible!!!!

Domi E

Oh that makes a LOT of sense!! Love it!!!

Domi E

Oh interesting! Tbh I sort of always read it the other way, that they changed her to Angel because from the main group she’s the more “expendable” one! But I have to get to the end of S3/S4 to know for sure. But that makes sense!

Domi E

The Cordy feelings these last few episodes are a lot! And oh damn that would be SO freaking creepy I would dig that duo so much though!!

Domi E

When does he not? :( But yes great point about the prophecy!!

Domi E

From what I’ve seen, it really is so freaking great!!

Domi E

True!! It really is a Faith version of Buffy! And even if she didn’t take the calls, I just wish people (other than Xander) did the effort of checking up on her like he did

Domi E

Great points!! Charisma is incredible!!!

Domi E

It’s really freaking incredible!!!

Justafox305

I'm at the very beginning of season 6

Rey

You're not wrong in that they brought her over to Angel to allow her to shine a bit more and progress her character. I think fans liked her but the writers may have been unsure about how to progress her storyline if she stayed in Buffy.
