Google “The Marx Brothers”, then find Zeppo.

Hopes for Wesley, gets a Xander episode. Ouch!

Steve Quast

Haven't had a chance to watch your reaction yet. I'll have to do it later on this evening. I understand not connecting with this episode (at least right away) because it's kind of nuts and they were obviously trying to do something different. But I like it quite a lot, especially the last 10 minutes or so when everything is going nuts. It's such a fun time lol. Anyway, I'll be back with more comments later on. Have a good one!

This is a clever idea for an episode and some people really like it, but really, I only liked the scene where the Bangelspeak got skewered. I think it's just one you either love or are annoyed by, and I'm in the latter camp.

Richard Ashton

The music running throughout this episode is called “Dead Guys With Bombs”.

Antonio

To be fair, the possibility of you liking a Xander-centric episode, especially so soon after what he did in Lovers Walk, were always going to be on the slim side!

Tim Pierce

Someone will explain this better than me, but the whole "let's have a plot to end the world but mostly ignore it" was done on purpose. If you ever watch it again, realize that the entire episode is being seen through the eyes of Xander (Buffy and Angel's scene, Giles talking to the spirits), which means the events are his take on everything. Also, this episode was meant to poke fun at the at the show, turning the drama up to 11. Personally this is one of my fav episodes of the season, just the pure bonkers of it all, but I would say the majority of the people don't like it upon first viewing.

Steven

Zeppo refers to Zeppo Marx, one of the Marx Brothers, who perceived to be superfluous to the Marx's comedy act. He quit acting after 5 movies.

Richard Ashton

If anyone has not seen / heard of them - try YouTube for the Contract Scene AKA Party of the First Part. Chico's fake Spanish accent makes the punchline work so well.

Stewart Denew

I like this episode, the whole world ending madness thing being essentially background slapstick was a great turnaround on how the episides usually go.

Soren Andersen

Its an episode I appreciate for existing, but I dont really like it that much. I do love how the show is able to transform itself with a shift in perspective. It reminds me of how I initially rejected the show, due to immature and preconceived notions but later found to be my favorite show of all time.

🤔 admittedly I didn't like this episode 20 years ago and hadn't rewatched until I discovered reactions but since then I've grown to really really like it .. it's not in my top .. anything.. but as someone who puts season 3 in my second to least favourite season, The Zeppo is probably one of those I would rewatch. Out of the 22 episodes, I'd probably rewatch maybe 8 of them 😁🙄 roll on season 4 ❤

This is a middle-of-the-road episode for me. Some good, some bad. But nothing too much in either direction. I think that Xander is the most inconsistently written characters in the show. Everyone else has had some development, or else a very consistent character (like Oz). With Xander it's sometimes like he's a different character depending on who wrote the episode. Something I don't like about this episode is how everyone is suddenly "we must keep Xander safe!" They've never worried about him getting hurt, and he's been in the thick of it as much as anyone else. But suddenly it's important to keep him "fray-adjacent" for some reason. Something I do like about this episode is the final confrontation with O'Toole, as well as Xander simply smiling and walking away when Cordelia insults him again.

See's D set up a whole bunch of expectations about watchers, slayers, and the big bad, etc, and then watches The Zeppo. My guess, ypur going to feel frustrated.

madfem

The concept of the episode is to be a commentary on masculinity. Basically we're following Xander who is trying to find his "thing" (yes, it IS a penis metaphore) because he's insecure about his value within the group. At the end, he understands what he has to offer (courage and heart as you said yourself Domi).

madfem

Okay so i just rewatched the Passion of the nerd guide for The Zeppo and you should definitely watch it, there is no spoiler in it. It will make you appreciate this episode so much more (also it gets so much better on rewatches if you have everything Passion of the nerd says in mind.)

The Suburban Big Man

The story format is inspired by the absurdist play Rosencratz and Guildenstern Are Dead, where story B gets the focus while story A is pushed to the background. I thought it was clever and highly entertaining but it is an episode that is more appreciated upon repeat viewings especially after you watch more of the show.

Not gonna lie, getting to watch a Xander-centric episode on Nicholas Brendon's 50th birthday makes me happy. I love this episode as we get an inside glimpse into Xander's viewpoint. I know he's not the easiest character to love but the more you watch the series, you realize just how important he is.

Steve Quast

"I'm very very convinced we're going to be meeting Wes this episode...." ......PSYCHE!!!

Steve Quast

Most people who speak English don't know the word. We all have to look it up.

Steve Quast

Angel: This is worse than anything we've ever faced Dude, you literally spent hundreds of years being tortured in hell.

Steve Quast

*zombie runs away* Xander: I wasn't finished! (Also what Xander said to Faith earlier that night.)

Steve Quast

Domi: 100% convinced they were going to meet the new watcher (Wes) The writers: Na na na na na na!

Ron Fehr

"You got a problem with dead people?" This line reminded me of the 1993 movie My Boyfriend's Back, which focused on a zombie in love with a living girl. Part of the story revolved around people not approving of their relationship.

Ron Fehr

Although Giles was fired as watcher, the council was probably doing a lot of deliberating before choosing his replacement. My guess is that the council didn't want to make a hasty decision.

Ron Fehr

Strangely, the reopening of the Hellmouth was not the main focus of the episode. We were likely just supposed to take it for granted that the team knew what to do.

The double standard regarding Xander and Faith hookup is cringeworthy. Xander is not my favorite character of the show, far from it, I don’t think however that he is portrayed as a “player”. In every interaction with a female character, he is never the instigator, except with Buffy, once. He can make more or less inappropriate jokes, but he never take the step to actually pursue a girl’s affection if she doesn’t reciprocate in some way. The fact that he is attracted to a pretty girl is normal for a 17-18 boy. In this case with Faith, she is the one instigating the encounter and taking what she wants from him. You can’t blame him for going along with it.

Vicky N

I didn’t like this episode the first time I watched it, because I don’t particularly care for Xander and I didn’t get what they were trying to do. Now I appreciate it so much more, the way the show is able to poke fun at itself is fantastic. It’s something you can’t do when you have a 22 episodes per season, you can take the time for a little detour. The fact that with an episode like this you still have character growth and a little bit of plot is a credit to the writers. Yes the fact that the big plot of this episode was in the background is intentional. The acknowledgment of the overdramatized relationship between Angel and Buffy is shown through Xander’s eyes as we the spectators are viewing it.

Stewart Denew

Well said - the main thing with Xander is that all other things aside, he's still 17/18 & immature, though I think he's actually got a bit of a romantic streak & wants to have a connection with someone he's pursuing; while Xander went along with Faith because hey, she's gorgeous, coming onto him & a horny adolescent's blood rushes away from the brain, afterwards he was just brushed off & he was pretty obviously hurt & confused (admittedly it was quickly glossed over due to other things taking priority) by the fact that Faith clearly only wanted a physical release & emotionally it hadn't meant anything to her.

Vicky N

You are right, at this point, Angel is nothing more than Buffy’s love interest. But it’s what he has always been on this show. If you want to see him as something more than that, perhaps there could be a show where he is the protagonist 🤔

Antonio

I'd recommend watching anything Buffy-related on YouTube only after you've watched the entire show, purely because of algorithms/recommended videos drawing your eyes to things that will only spoil future plotlines for you. But I imagine you probably know this by now anyway.

Thom Purdy

As of this episode, Xander has saved the world 3 times: Prophesy Girl, Innocence, and now, The Zeppo. As to Faith, remember how she says: "Isn't it crazy how slaying makes you hungry and horny". I don't think she had much in her fridge so...

Domi E

Thanks!!! You too Steve!

Domi E

Yeah I can tell people have many mixed feelings about this ep!

Domi E

Hahahahaha. No further comments at this time :P

Domi E

That def makes a lot more sense! I hadn't gone into it with this view! Excited to eventually rewatch it and I'm sure I'll warm up to it more :)

Domi E

Thanks for letting me know guys!!

Domi E

That's true it was def a surprise!

Domi E

Yeah that's a great point!

Domi E

Excited to reach S4 soon :)

Domi E

Yeah that's a great point, there do seem to be quite a lot of inconsistencies with his character! Which is disappointing because poor Xander, he deserves a bigger chance at character development!

Domi E

Yeah I never click on Buffy youtube vids, but I'll def watch that later cause now I'm curious :) Thanks for the rec!

Domi E

Ohhh interesting! Yes everyone says it does get better with rewatches, so I'm excited to rewatch!

Domi E

Omg that's so sweet I LOVE the timing!!!

Domi E

Okay, good to know! Haha

Domi E

This was a direct way to attack me

Domi E

Oh, that's so interesting!

Domi E

Yeah thats true! Though they suck so maybe they were just lazy and slacking.

Domi E

Yeah it was an interesting choice!

Domi E

I def didn't mean to sound biased in my judgement of Xander, so I'm sorry if I did. Of course Faith is just as much to blame!

Domi E

I'm def excited to rewatch it cause thats what everyone's been saying they like it more!

Domi E

Haha. A show with Angel as the protagonist? Never heard of it, what a weird idea!

Domi E

Oh damnnnn. And haha great point!

So, they pair Xander with Cordelia and you don't like it and then Xander and Faith and you don't like it...what is going to make you happy!!?? ;) You are SO right about it basically just being The Pack part 2 so I too get annoyed with this episode as it's just a retread and I'd like the show to give Xander so more freaking layers! The excluding him from the danger comes over as forced and not in character. Over the years though I have reconciled with the fact that I don't get to see the big adventure and whatever the 'bravest thing I've ever seen' was :/ I definitely get why you're a bit frustrated about the lack of consequences from the last episode and, yeah, I think most people feel that way. HOWEVER, I don't think they're in a totally happy place. Their only one-on-one conversation was IMO a little strained. When Buffy says she doesn't want the details Giles just goes with that, in the past he would probably have said how important the details are or at least look a tad disapproving, but nothing. Also, his wardrobe, he's in a SWEATER!!!!!! He's lost the three piece suit. Significantly, I think, it comes back when he's been trying to phone the watchers council and when things get seriously but we have NEVER seen Giles looking this casual lol Also, the jelly doughnuts. He says that everybody knows they're his favourite, my head canon is that Xander got extra to cheer him up about being fired. Willow ate one of the four and then sat there and watched Buffy eat three. I think that's why she ratted on Buffy, I think she was shocked. I know it seems like I'm making a lot out of doughnuts BUT Giles is pretty bloody annoyed up to the point when Willow tells him it was Buffy when he is immediately 'that's OK, Xander can get more'. I don't think Buffy is doing it consciously particularly but it feels a bit passive aggressive to me and it seems like Giles is OK with her eating every one of his favourite doughnuts until she finally forgives him.

SK Elkins

You're misremembering what happened in The Pack. The kid who refused to narc on the bullies in that episode wasn't Xander.

SK Elkins

Just imagine the most cliche and derivative-of-previous-episodes events and dialogue possible, and you'll get to see the "big adventure." That's how the apocalypse plotline in this episode is constructed. It's, y'know, a parody.

SK Elkins

I think there may be a significant generation gap when it comes to this episode's reception. Younger viewers seem more likely to miss the televisual cues that the apocalypse plot and its scenes are parodic, whereas I don't remember anyone being confused by that when this episode first aired. I really do think that it may be a case of comedic cues having changed over the intervening years. Humour prompts can be very subtle, and very much tied to time and place. (And Domi is watching cross-culturally as well, of course, but this is a pattern I've been seeing in younger US viewers as well.)
