WHAT THE HEECKKKKKK!!!!!

Also.... Still tweaking microphone settings and getting used to the new set up so bare with me. I also learned how to pause on the next episode so that's exciting, haha. No more long pauses!!!! Only slightly... :P

But again, thank you all SO much for helping me get my new laptop!!!

Buffy did save the day – for Jonathan.

Whisper_dvm

One of my favorite episodes!! Will be watching shortly!

Allan

The infamous episode that was postponed due to the Columbine shootings...except here in Canada :P

Ron Fehr

I was just about to tell Domi the same thing, Allen.

Ron Fehr

Actually the Columbine shootings happened only weeks before it happened in my old high school.

Ron Fehr

A great reaction to Buffy's discovery about Joyce and Giles. I had the same reaction. At least you know why Joyce didn't want Buffy to read her thoughts.

AlyAdmirer

Columbine was literally, like, ONE week before "Earshot" was scheduled to air. Then, as Allan says, it got postponed in the US, and didn't actually air until just before Season 4 started. I'm always a little jealous of people coming into BUFFY later, because they got the experience of seeing "Earshot" where and when they were supposed to--though I absolutely understand why it was postponed.

AlyAdmirer

I STILL love that headline, "Apathy on the Rise, No One Cares" :-)

Tim Pierce

It's obviously understandable why this episode was postponed, but man was it confusing, back then, that Buffy tells Angel she needs some space in one episode and in the very next episode they're back together.

Richard Ashton

Just in case anyone wonders about Giles calling Wes a 'Berk'. This is shortened and possibly rhyming slang for 'Berkshire Hunt' (now pronounced as if that first 'e' is an 'a') and stands for C... err - 'Contemptable Person'.

Nica Marie

Yes, the ep was postponed due to Columbine. But, does no one see the reference to another real life campus tragedy? Jonathan in the clock tower directly references the 1966 shooting at the University of Texas in Austin.

Devon Martin

This was such an important episode 🖤...I remember seeing previews for this episode not realizing what was about to happen in Colorado...crazy coincidence that this episode was supposed to air and they pulled it until after the season ended...you are so on domie when you said this topic in particular still exists

Ron Fehr

Gotta say, Domi, that I didn't mind your pauses during the episodes. Sometimes they were necessary. If you're not always able to take notes, perhaps you could sometimes make your comments mid-episode so that you don't forget about them later on. By the way, you sounded better on the microphone. Is it a new one?

Steven

Anthony Head reminded me of his Gold Blend/Taster's Choice advert days when he taunted Wesley over the demon Azorath.

Jeffrey

I like pauses during the episode. Get those thoughts out!

Reaper74

One thing I've always liked about this episode is that we get to see Wesley and Giles truly working together to help Buffy. They put their pride and egos aside and act like co-Watchers.

UTU49

And why Joyce didn't want Giles over for Christmas Eve.

zerofk

I like this episode. The irony of Buffy's telepathy making her even more disconnected from her friends is not lost on me. And I like that they keep brining back those smaller characters like Jonathan (no pun intended). One thing I don't really like is the misdirect of the big gun - that's way too unwieldy for a suicide. Sure maybe it is because that's the only gun he could easily get his hands on, but it still feels like tricking the audience just for the sake of it. It even has a scope. I also like Buffy's speech to Jonathan. I don't know if it's the right thing to say in that situation, but it's very true. Everyone, and especially everyone of high school age, is too busy thinking about themselves to give much thought to anyone else.

UTU49

Yep. It's amazing that this episode was written and filmed BEFORE Columbine, and scheduled to air AFTER Columbine. For those of you who are under 30, Columbine was enormous. It was something that people thought about for weeks or for months. School shootings in the United States are far FAR worse in recent years. Can anyone even remember how many school shootings (and other mass shootings) that there have been in the last 10 years? There have been so many that they all blur together. I think there were a couple of times in the last 10 years when there was a mass shooting and then another one (or 2) within the next year. I have to stop thinking and writing about this now.

Steve Quast

The Mayor is like an evil Walt Disney.

Steve Quast

I wish I could edit my enemies. I'd make them all 3-foot troglodytes.

Steve Quast

Faith: Killed a man, denied it, betrayed Buffy, assaulted Xander, tried to bring back Angelus, teamed up with the Mayor, killed "innocent" demon. Number of things Faith has done wrong: 0

UTU49

There was a lot going on in this episode. They brought back Percy... and Jonathan got to be important, when I don't think he was important in any previous episodes. They also created 3 new student characters for this episode: Nancy, Freddy, and Hogan Martin. I actually thought all 3 of them were interesting characters who I would be happy to see again. I'd like to say a little more about these characters, but because of spoileriness, I'll leave that to the end of the season.

Steve Quast

Once again Xander saves the day.

Steve Quast

"Sure we can train...as long as you're not busy having sex with my mother." "Oh no. We always save having sex for when you're out on patrol." "......!!!!!!"

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

I love that Giles calls him that in canon lolol it definitely originated as rhyming slang for a very rude word, not sure if the censors were aware of that :D

cruzinbosco

I absolutely love that ending. If you go back and rewatch, you can see a couple of students behind Buffy and Giles who overhear the conversation. Their reactions are priceless!

Vicky N

All the call back to “Band Candy” . Both episodes were written by Jane Espenson.

GenU

Domi's picture in this reaction seems to be a mirror image. But the inset Buffy episode is OK. Not sure how that happened. Maybe it came from the camera that way.

Bri

I love this episode.... I love how moved you were by Buffy's goodness, Domi. She is so compassionate and kind to Jonathan when she talks him into giving her the gun. I love that with all the physical power she has, she solves the problem in the most healing and loving way she can. I think there's something really important about that, especially given the recent trial of Derek Chauvin. Of course, because of white supremacy, police brutality extremely disproportionately effects people of colour. And also, police brutality also sits within a policing culture where police would rather shoot, or use other types of extreme force, rather than expose themselves to a particular element of risk. Buffy assumes an element of risk and allows an element of risk to the other students, because she feels it's worth it to treat Jonathan in a humane way. Of course there is a limit to that risk, as there should be. (For Buffy and the police) But this scene stands out to us, because we are exposed to a culture where violence is presented as the normal response to someone who seems to pose a danger. I'd argue that one of Buffy's major strengths as a slayer is that she's imaginative, creative, and compassionate in her approach to problem solving. It's this representation of justice where there's a strong sense of proportion.

Antonio

Yep, I like to think Freddy went on to win a Pulitzer at some point.

KT

I love the framing of mass shootings in this episode, especially for the time. The truth is, you don't reason people out of murdering a bunch of children. In reality, Buffy's speech to Jonathan working only makes sense when his aim is suicide, but the twist works on you anyway because we're conditioned to believe mass shooters are typically victims of bullying and that they're doing it because people were mean to them. And a lot of television portrays them like Jonathan was portrayed in this episode, except unlike Jonathan they're actually mass murderers. Victims of bullying are much much more likely to turn their pain inward and to kill themselves than to kill others, or even to bully others. Mass murderers are the bullies. They're the ones filled with hate and possess the level of entitlement and narcissism that it takes to kill a bunch of people. I think it's really important that the actual mass murderer in this ep had a purely hateful and completely illegitimate motivation that was never going to be reasoned with. I could also go on and on about why Buffys speech was so effective at talking Jonathan down even though it soundsd kinda harsh on the surface, but I have to go to bed.

GenU

Domi, I noticed that your image is cropped a little closer than you normally have it. I assume you're trying to crop out the microphone. However, microphones don't necessarily have to be kept very close. You can experiment with it at various distances.

Domi E

Some awesome fun facts there, I love it!!!

Domi E

Wow. The timing is truly incredible... Just shows how important of a topic this is!

Domi E

It was really hilarious!

Domi E

Oh man that really does sound hella confusing! But at the same time...... Isn't that sort of the regular Buffy/Angel dynamic we always see... Even in the right order? :P

Domi E

Oh wow! I didn't know that one. Heartbreaking.

Domi E

That was really some absurd timing!

Domi E

Yes I'll def pause if I feel the need to! :) And yep just got a new mic!

Domi E

Okay I just wanted to say thank you for mentioning this cause I just googled that commercial and WOW I LOVE IT. He looks HOT..

Domi E

That's so true!! Gotta love them and their concern over Buffy!

Domi E

Yeah those are good points for sure!

Domi E

It really is so horrible. I can't believe shit like this is still happening.

Domi E

Well that's a very interesting comparison haha.

Domi E

Interesting choice Steve..... Very interesting.

Domi E

I guess we shall see soon enough :)

Domi E

As the wonderful Miss Taylor Swift would say... "That's my man"

Domi E

Ha! You made me go back and rewatch and that's funny. I had totally missed it!!

Domi E

Oh awesome!!!! It makes so much sense now!!

Domi E

Actually I mirrored it myself when I was recording, for some reason it looked better. It's all about getting the new set up right I'm still changing things around!

Domi E

LOVE THIS!!! So true Briony you bring an incredible point!!!!

Domi E

Yep that's a great point, there really is quite a distinction!

Domi E

Oh don't worry, you can totally see the microphone on my next vid! The distance was more because it's been hard for me to find a good place to position my camera but I'm working on it!

Tim Pierce

True, but there's at least context. Whether it be Buffy talking Angel down from a ledge, or Angel curing Buffy of a case of the insanities.

UTU49

Well, personally I love troglodytes. No, I'm just kidding. The truth is that I like the WORD "troglodyte".

UTU49

Geez Louise, Steve! lol. Thumbs up for writing extra dialogue for the show.

Stewart Denew

Fantastic episode,, others have already mentioned the timing vs. Columbine so won't go on about that but the way they balance the serious stuff with the comedy is great. Love Cordelia's echo effect & while it's a funny way of showing she doesn't have much of a filter, it could just as easily be a demonstration of the idea that she's a fundamentally honest person, especially with her friends - as she said previously "tact is just not saying true stuff. i'll pass". It's probably a bit of both. Once again, Xander makes a joke in passing that's surprisingly plot-relevant; also just the whole stumbling into what's going on while distracted by food seems to me a pretty strong shout out to Shaggy from Scooby Doo & they do nickname their group "the scoobies" after all :) Joyce had sex with Giles! On a police car! Twice! The escalation there was what really elevated that & hey, makes you remember Band Candy again which was another fantastic episode. Ending with the call back to that & the physical comedy was just a perfect cap to the episode.

Chas Summers

This episode didn't air until right before the Season 4 premiere. It had been scheduled to air about 10 days after Columbine.

Steve Quast

Indeed troglodyte is a great word.

Steve Quast

For obvious reasons the writers never utilized any of my suggestions. Go figure.

Domi E

Great points! Its a great ep!

Claire Eyles

Yep, definite rhyming slang origins. Calling someone a 'dropkick' in Australia is equivalent to the c word as well, although I think most people don't know or realise the origins of the term. A dropkick is a type of punt kick in Aussie rules football, punt rhymes with...well, you get the picture. All quite on the western (as in 'all quiet on the western front') is another rhyming slang phrase for the c word as well, albeit a very old one & I don't think anyone's used it since the 1960s. What can I say, I grew up in a family of fluent rhyming slang speakers. :D

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

That was the first thing I ever saw him do, it was HUGE in the UK, headline news believe it or not lol He was the only member of the cast I recognised when btvs started :)

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

The only advantage of watching the wide screen version is you get to see the background students much more. Giles must have such a rep by now, first he snags the hottest teacher in school and now Buffy's mum ;)

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

I love this episode!!! The little details, like Cordy not even knowing what Jonathan looks like, Cordy in general tbh (and you obviously know her well, you called it), the call backs to previous episodes and lots of characters coming back. I find it interesting that Giles is the only one who Buffy doesn't really get to listen to much at all. For all the others their inner monologue style and thoughts (if not secrets) are revealed, and they are perfect for their characters but Giles is just worried about Buffy, he doesn't give anything else away. It's JOYCE that does that for him lol I'd love to see that training session....awkward :D

GenU

Forgot to mention that the revelation in this Earshot episode that Giles and Joyce had sex on a police car in Band Candy puts the final scene in Band Candy between Giles, Joyce and Buffy in a whole new light if you re-watch that scene now.

Lee Wilcock

Anybody else notice that her audio and video were slightly out of sync? But apart from that the audio had less echoing, and the overall quality was better. :)
