My conclusion (yet again) is that Buffy is truly TOO FREAKING GOOD for this world. Honestly.

In one sense, what Joyce says is absolutely true: Angel and Buffy are from different worlds, different times, different cultures, etc. But in another sense, Angel and Buffy are from the same world, one which most humans don't take part in, and which was a driving force in their being together.

Steve Quast

I think all things considered Joyce handled her conversation with Angel really well. Everything she said was true, but she said it as tactfully as she could.

Steve Quast

Angel: We need to talk Domi: Oh fuck my life.... Why did that make me laugh so much? lol

Steve Quast

It is true, though. Angel should have waited until after prom before having the talk with her.

Steve Quast

These gang members on pcp are getting uglier and uglier.

Steve Quast

Last season: "It's horrible! Buffy sent Angel to hell!" This season: "Buffy, send Angel back to hell!"

Ron Fehr

Your sisters did a good job dressing you up. You look nice.

Nica Marie

The actor who plays Tucker was also the singing voice of Aladdin in the original animated Disney movie. See, Xander has his moments of being a truly good person. I wish he got more credit for that instead of all the hate. And I still say Buffy is wrong to say Celebration by Kool and the Gang sucks. That song is a classic party tune for good reason. And just why is Pump Up the Volume one of the movies Tucker uses? There is no prom scene in that movie. Just a lot of awesome music and of course Christian Slater. Now excuse me while I recover from my cry over the class protector moment. This happens every time I watch this ep.

HuntingSwan

Domi my favorite part of the video is your thoughts afterwards and I love to see how long you talk about the episode, the longer the better for me! <3

Lunarwind

Looking good there Domi. And your eyes when you got the Anya scene at 7:00!

Devon Martin

awesome reaction! this episode is another fan favorite....isn't it CRAY how this show can trigger such human emotion..i can't believe i was not even a teen when i started watching this show...now that im 32, this show hits on a complete different scale....i love when i watch these reactions and how this show can trick you with where they are going with storylines......i so hope you can watch eps 21 and 22 back to back ;)

Justafox305

homecoming - suppose to be a big football game (against rival school). and also a homecoming court , the seniors vote for the king (usually a football player) and queen and then a big dance afterwards. Sometimes the king and queen of a past year or successful people from your school will show up to talk about their success. Prom - fancy party, there is also a king and queen picked.

zerofk

Dolled up Domi looking nice :-) The airpods don't really match the outfit though ;-) The way Anya asked Xander to the prom is - well, original. I kinda love it. That class protector award scene hits me in the feels every time. Having Jonathan present it was the perfect choice. Buffy saving the prom, Xander buying Cordelia her dress, Giles offering Buffy comfort, the whole class recognising Buffy - everyone is so good this episode. It's all so heart warming. Except, you know, the hellhound thing.

Ron Fehr

I had the exact same response as you upon seeing Buffy being appreciated by the entire class. I teared up too. One of my favorite reaction videos of yours so far.

Ron Fehr

I guess, being from a different time period, that tact wasn't something that he was good at.

Ron Fehr

One thought on why Angel broke up with Buffy before the prom: He didn't want these thoughts plaguing him for hours on end, so he mistakenly chose to do it when he did. Just to get the conversation over with.

The Suburban Big Man

I find it interesting reactors tend to be against Cordy and Wesley when Wesley is perhaps in his mid-20s> Buffy and Angel is ok, although Angel is more than 200 years older or even if you make him his human age when he died, he is also in his mid-20s. Xander went to the Prom with Anya, who is even older than all of them but she is stuck in the persona of a 12th grader, she is still old though. Domi, I am not judging you, it's just an observation on how reactors tend to react to these relationships, just interesting is all.

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

Agreed, no judgement here but I don't have any more problem with Wesley and Cordelia that I do with Buffy and Angel. Domi also has their future relationship in her head (well, maybe, who knows what she can remember of that ;D) so that maybe makes a difference too. I mean, I'm not FOR their relationship particularly but it's no worse than Bangel, Wesley is described as 'young' in the script so I've always thought he was 23, 24, which ain't great, but I always thought Angel was about that age (as a human) as well.

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

Oh man, this episode always gets me. I really love the way Xander and Cordelia seem to come to an understanding. It's been said a lot that Xander is not from a well off family so it's extra huge for him to pay off her dress. I guess he knows how much it sucks to not to be able to afford stuff. I really love the way Anya asks Xander out because she's stuck with all these human emotions and she doesn't know what to do with them. I love the look of resignation on Xander's face as she goes on and on about the men she has destroyed lol I die a little when Buffy breaks down when she's talking to Willow, that scene upsets me so much more than the ones with Angel because, yes, he's being a bit of a dick breaking up with her right before Prom. Apparently SMG was so upset that DB was leaving that she couldn't stop crying after they shot that and they all had to take a 20 minute break :'( I love the "you're having Prom, even if I have to kill everybody on the face of the earth", "yay" part. :D And since you didn't mention Giles once (shame on you :P) I LOVE the way he can put aside whatever he may feel about Angel and truly support Buffy when she's upset, and stand there looking worried all night, and take that little umbrella from her and step out of the way so gracefully so she can have a dance with Angel. That proud smile on his face during the speech ( which is what makes me cry the hardest) gives me life! And I'll just say this, everybody has a partner to dance with EXCEPT HIM. :'((((((((

Dave Ford

My problem with Wesley isn't that he (potentially) dating Cordelia as much as that he absolutely shouldn't be hanging round a high-school. I know he's got a reason to be there - but it's not 'assistant librarian'.

Domi E

LOL, for once in her life Buffy was wrong!! 🤪

Domi E

aww thank you!! 🥺that means so much u have no idea!!!!

Domi E

oh for sure!!! it really is incredible!!!

Domi E

OH? i never knew homecoming had anything to do with football, i’m shocked!!!

Domi E

It really is the most heartwarming episode!!!

Domi E

yep thats probably it but poor buffy!!

Domi E

I think for me it’s less about the age difference and more about the power dynamics. I mention this in one of my vids but I can’t remember which one. Anya and Angel are clearly set up as “younger” in the sense that they don’t hang out with Giles/Wes/Joyce but with the squad, Anya being surrounded and being friends with Highschoolers and all. Wes on the other hand is clearly set up as an authority figure, who has some power over (some of) them, and that’s where things start getting a little creepy. I feel like the Bangel relationship can be creepy if you think about the age difference which is SO wrong, but at the same time I completely forget he’s older just because all we see of him is him being somewhat of a teen!

Domi E

And RJ I remember nothing of Wes/Cordy’s relationship in Angel tbh. I think I got Wes confused with Doyle? My brain is truly a mess

Domi E

Noooo there’s no way SMG was that sad, this is gonna make me cry!! and omg I can’t believe I didn’t mention Giles??? I’m sorry my brain was 100% in a “Buffy is the best person ever” mood this reaction. AND WHY WOULD YOU SAY HE HAS NO PARTNER ARE YOU OUT TO HURT MEEEEEEE

Justafox305

yup, the main focus of homecoming was suppose to be about the former students "coming" back "home" to the school they graduated, but most ppl only care about the football game and the dance and who will be crowned homecoming king and queen

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

You know I am 😈 and I really find that moment bitter sweet (and head canon that he went for a little walk till the song was over 😢) Buffy IS great though so I'll forgive you for getting a bit forgetful 😁

Steven

I think Angel realised that he and Buffy had no future, that he couldn't give her the things in life she needed or would want. In 'Earshot', when Buffy found she couldn't read his thoughts, Angel did say 'just ask', which was another way of saying he would never lie to her. When Buffy pushed for the reasons for Angel's behaviour in the sewer, he tried to put it off but in the end, had to tell her. To do otherwise would have meant lying to Buffy and would have made their time together before his leaving an act.

Antonio

The perfect reaction to pretty much a perfect scene ie. the Class Protector award. It's such a wonderful thing to re-watch scenes such as this and see people such as yourself cry happy tears along with us. There are many more fantastic moments to come on BtVS, but I think it's this one that most fans will have at or near the top of the list. And SMG has gone on record as saying that this is her favourite episode, which just makes the emotional impact even greater on re-watch.

Antonio

It's true, your analysis after your vids is so awesome to listen to - one of the best reactors out there for this.

UTU49

"He's 240 years old. He doesn't exactly 'get' the prom." I think we have to cut Angel some slack here. He's doing the best he can for Buffy's long term welfare, and he was functioning with the hangover of a truly horrific nightmare. You can't expect people to understand everything. You can only expect them to treat other people with respect and compassion. Angel was doing that. My 2 cents.

UTU49

Snyder: "Who the hell is bringing in all this triple strength pcp? Why I oughta... "

Superplin

I love that you love Buffy (the character) as much as I do.

UTU49

I've got too many thoughts about this episode and this reaction video. First things first. When I first saw the thumbnail, my first thought was, "Domi looks different. :( I like the way she usually looks." Then I realized that you dressed up for the prom... which is heart-warming. Then you mentioned that you let your sisters dress you up, which is doubly heartwarming (or quadruply heart-warming since you said sisterS, plural). And then, of course, this episode is quadruply heart-warming on its own, so at this point, my heart... is warm. It's a good thing I have a nice cool drink with me. (Cran and raspberry with ginger ale.) Okay, now that I've gotten these silly thoughts out of my system, I will, perhaps actually address the episode itself. -_-

Domi E

Yeah I get that. But even if he didn’t 100% understand Prom I think he knew how important it was to Buffy though :(

Domi E

Awwwww thank you Anthony!!!!

Domi E

omg i’m shocked right now haha never knew that’s what it was about

Domi E

That’s a great point!!

Domi E

Awww I didn’t know it was her fav episode that makes me so happy!!!

Domi E

She’s literally the best!!!!

Domi E

Aww, this message was so heartwarming!! Thank you ❤️❤️❤️

Superplin

A surprising number of people who watch this show disagree. So I'm super protective of my #1 girl.

Domi E

WHAT?! How is it possible to watch this show and not have Buffy as #1?! Especially after this episode!!!!

Superplin

I've no doubt you'll hear about it sooner or later. I'm actually pleasantly surprised you haven't already. I got salty yesterday because of a comment someone posted on another reactor's Patreon about how awful Buffy is, how selfish, how the show tries to make us feel sorry for her but she's actually terrible, etc. It makes me legit mad

Domi E

Oh my?!?! I would be mad too cause what the heck!!

UTU49

The Prom is one of my favourite episodes (and apparently it is also one of Sarah Gellar’s favorite episodes). For one thing, it has, for me, one of the best happy cry moments in the history of film and television. I think this episode is a master class in the use of setups and payoffs that are unabashedly and very sincerely sentimental. Many of us find the Class Protector award scene really emotional. When you think about it, this is really something they have been setting up since episode 1 of Season 1. For Buffy to get this recognition at a time when she has been both down-trodden and self-sacrificing is monumentally satisfying. And for Jonathan to be the one to present the award after the events of Earshot is – for lack of a better phrase – just so lovely. I came very close to using a perfect BtVS quote here and then I realized that it comes from a future episode. Ah, zut alors! (I don’t actually speak Frawnsay… much.) And then Xander paying for Cordy’s dress is another thing that they have been setting up for… years. While it wasn’t necessarily planned in advance, it is informed by events of the last 2 years and is the culmination of their relationship to this point. And of course, this is a major moment for the Buffy/Angel relationship. I love that the mayor – of all people – broached the topic of their future in the previous episode. I love that Joyce has acted with concern for her daughter while simultaneously treating Angel with due respect. I also love that Angel didn’t tell Buffy about his conversation with Joyce. He was withholding significant information from her, but I think this was one of those times where it was the right thing to do. Angel knew that Joyce was right, and he could take full responsibility for his decision, so there was no point in poisoning the relationship between Buffy and Joyce. Last but not least, if anyone wants to watch another reaction to the Prom, two others I really enjoyed were Van’s and Arvin’s. Arvin was crying at the BEGINNING of the episode, so I was thinking to myself, “Uh oh. This poor guy is gonna get dehydrated.”

Domi E

Absolutely great points!! It really was set up so well!!

UTU49

I can't say I have a full understanding of why I love these characters so much. It almost feels like they are my favorite cousins that live far away... something like that.

UTU49

Richard, twice now, I thought that said "snails". There might be something wrong with me. -_-

UTU49

I totally agree with you guys. When reactors like Domi or Liam Duke talk about Buffy for 30 minutes (or HOURS), I'm as happy as a clamp.

UTU49

It's wild to think that you still have 4 full seasons of Buffy left. It's just too bad that they are all exactly the same as Season 3. On the other hand, Season 3 is good, so that's fine.

UTU49

Homecoming is a yearly event for the entire school. The prom is a formal dance just for the graduating students. The prom is a pretty big event in North America. I probably went to about 15+ dances in high school... but you only get one prom... so it's super special. My prom date sucked, though. I can't really complain because I sucked too. (That sounded so bad.)

UTU49

In my mind, I'm inserting a very short shot of Giles with a little smile on his face during the final dance. Then he looks down sadly, and they cut back to the dancing couples. Ouch. Ow ow ow ow ow.

Vicky N

I don’t know how many times I have watched this show, this episode gets me every time. I cry like a baby. Domi thank you so much for your appreciation of Buffy. She is my favorite character as well and not only on this show.

Ron Fehr

I love Buffy's determination that her friends have a great prom. Even if she has to kill "every person on the face of the earth to do it". One problem with that. With everybody dead, how can you have a prom. Lol

FernWithy

Heh, I have to admit, I laugh a little at the cringy response to 21 (ish) Wesley perving on18-ish Cordy (which I share), but at the same time, 243-year-old Angel and 18 year old Buffy are so cute! :D Most of this episode is just okay for me, but Jonathan's speech at the prom lifts it to one of the great fan-favorite episodes. With Anya... I guess the rest of the gang is just kind of goes with the flow on Xander and his monster dates. Like, "Okay, whatever... she's Xander's date now. Figures."

Domi E

ooooo i’m so excited!!

Domi E

[insert me having a breakdown in the corner]

Domi E

Aww, thank you for appreciating her too!!!!!

Domi E

hahahaha good point

Domi E

haha they really were so okay with anya! and omg i thought wes was on his 30s not early 20s…… oopps

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

The script describes him simply as 'young' so I've always thought of him as 23-25, I think he'd have more experience and be a bit more able to handle Buffy, Faith and Giles if he was in his 30's - although who COULD handle that lot?! ;)

Bri

What I love about this show, is that you're primed to want Angel to show up to have this romantic (if sad-romantic) moment with Buffy, then gives us the scene with the class protector award, and it means more. Having her efforts recognised, her goodness recognised by her community, meant more. This is such an important moment for Buffy. She has this moment of real connectedness with her community which fills her spirit, at the moment when her romantic disconnection has made her so sad. I'm glad he shows up to, but I didn't need it so much after the award, and I don't think Buffy does either. Argh I love this episode and this show. Also, the scene between Willow and Buffy is amazing. SMG's performance is so amazing, and that women feel able to provide to each other the kind of physical comfort needed in this kind of raw, overwhelming pain, is presented so beautifully here. (And it's really sad that the way many (particularly cis, het) men experience friendship is without this kind of physical comfort and intimacy)

Bri

Can I just say, Angel is about 200 years older than either Joyce or Giles.

FernWithy

Yeah, I just figured he was a super recent graduate on his first job. Just the vibe I got. So I figured 21-22, usual graduation age.

UTU49

I've always perceived Wesley to be in his mid or late 20s. It's interesting to hear that members of the fandom have perceived his age differently. I'd be interested in hearing some more people's thoughts on this. How and why they perceive Wes' age.

UTU49

"What I love about this show, is that you're primed to want Angel to show up to have this romantic (if sad-romantic) moment with Buffy, then gives us the scene with the class protector award, and it means more." Yeah, this show is so great at really giving you meaningful events and stories, rather than just entertaining you. There are so many other shows where you feel that the writers are just trying to yank you around and keep you watching. Buffy on the other hand is... emotionally nourishing. As a result, here we are, watching this show again, 20 years later.

Bri

Totally. It's very deliberate storytelling in that way, in a way that is still unusual. Emotionally nourishing is a great way of putting it.

Bri

Alexis was 34 at the time of S3. I always read Wes as being younger than Giles (who I read as being early 40's). I never read Wes as being under 25- if they wanted to portray that, they should have used a younger actor, in my opinion. There's no way on earth Alexis was passing for 22, if that's what they intended. Re: him and Cordy, Vs Buffy/Angel, One of the reasons the Wes thing is gross, is that whilst he's not Cordy's Watcher, he is Watcher to two girls exactly Cordy's age, who are watching his interest and actions. I just think it was always going to doom his relationship with his slayers, because who wants to be objectified by their watcher? Whilst Angel did come to Sunnydale to help Buffy, he's not her teacher or her watcher e.g. isn't in a position of trust in that way. (Although he is, of course, a lot older!)

Bri

Thanks for shouting out Arvin's reaction, UTU49. Arvin's reactions are very insightful and emotional .

UTU49

NP. I've enjoyed so many reactors, that I like singling out some of their reactions for my favorite episodes. I have my favorite reaction videos from Shan and Liam Duke and lots of others.

UTU49

Thanks. I also like to describe my favorite shows this way. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is both nutritious and delicious! (There might be a food theme here.) :P

FernWithy

I guess I don't pay much attention to the actor's age. If we're there, then Cordy is in her late 20s, so it's significantly less creepy either way!

Stewart Denew

Excellent episode with a lot of setup for the season finale & Angel's spin-off series. Joyce's talk with Angel was much the same thing as what the mayor said - the mayor placed some doubts but it'd be possible to brush them off as just trying to get into their heads, however hearing them from Joyce too, from a place based on love for Buffy... it's probably what really helped cement Angel's decision to leave. Props to Xander - the dress & covering for her (including volunteering for the magic shop visit, subtly done but presumably to ensure no-one happens to notice her working at the nearby dress shop) is him apologising via actions instead of words & demonstrates his sincerity far more effectively, which Cordy clearly understands & appreciates. Wesley & Cordy... like Giles said, she's 18, old enough to make those decisions for herself & Wesley is clearly young, presumably barely out of uni so probably only supposed to be 25 at most, that's not a huge age difference, also it's not like he was in any position of authority since he wasn't a teacher or her watcher at all, so there's far less power imbalance there - then the way they realise as soon as they kiss that there's literally *nothing* further going to happen there is hilarious - the behind the scenes thing where Charisma & Alyson were both interested in Alexis just makes it funnier. Johnathan has been a recurring character in a few episodes but him being the one to give the class protector award has a lot more impact when seen in proper context with the events of Earshot, though obviously that wasn't apparent with the original airing. Good to see Emma Caulfield again, she's a great actress & Anya has a fun character premise.

Stewart Denew

Time alone isn't necessarily a good measure of maturity though.

Bri

It just never occurred to me that Wes was supposed to be that young, I guess.

Domi E

I feel similarly to Briony since that's also the way I saw Wes originally! I had no idea he was supposed to be in his early 20s, woops. Even with Charisma being older than the rest of the gang I think she still looks like she's their age!

Domi E

That's so true! Great points!

Domi E

That's a slightly lil fact that has COMPLETELY slipped my mind and thinking about it makes me so??????

Domi E

OMG I didn't know Charisma and Alyson were into Alexis? This is absolutely hilarious!!! And ah I totally forgot Earshot hadn't aired for you guys, that really must have been a bummer

Veronika

I don't know if anyone has already mentioned it, but SMG was actually really emotional during that scene when she is crying on Willow's lap and the set had to be closed for 25 minutes for her to recover. SMG was really invested in the Buffy/Angel relationship and she wanted them to be together...plus the fact that David was leaving for Angel. Sarah said that David was her most trusted coworker, so I think that was also a factor. I just love to see when reactors appreciate SMG and her skills as an actress because she is killing it!

Domi E

Oh my goddd this makes me want to cry. THIS IS SO SAD :(

Kirsten (Heavenli24)

Awesome reaction :). I just love this episode (it’s one of my favourites)… the break-up scene is so well done (even though it’s badly-timed on Angel’s part) and it’s done in a way that even if you’re hoping for a HEA for Buffy and Angel, you understand why it has to happen. It sucks that they can’t make it work and that Angel has to leave, but on the plus side, it gives us 5 whole seasons of Angel :). As I understand it, the original plan was for Angel to be gone forever after 2x22… and the only reason he returned from hell and was in S3 at all was in order to set up the spin-off (hence him being a little out of place at times in S3). So, if the choice is between Angel leaving and getting his own show, or no more Angel ever again after Becoming Part 2, I’ll take him leaving any day. Other moments from this episode that i love: - Buffy receiving the class protector award… gets me emotional every time - Xander buying the dress for Cordy - Angel showing up at the end Oh, and regarding your prediction that this episode would be mayor/Ascension-based and not a MOTW episode, the thing is that Buffy is not just a show about fighting monsters, but is also a show aboout growing up and experiencing life, so while this wasn’t a main story-arc episode, it’s an important one nonetheless, because it’s focused on the other big moments in Buffy’s life: going to Prom, graduating high school, growing up (which I’ve just realised is exactly what Buffy says to Angel in the episode). I’m dying to watch 3x21 right now, but I don’t have the internet speed in my room to do it, so I’m going to have to wait until my next night shift on Saturday to stream it (but hopefully that will mean I can watch 3x21 and 3x22 together).

Domi E

Thank you Kirsten! That’s so true I totally agree!!

UTU49

Thanks for sharing that, Veronica. I hadn't come across the fact that David was one of Sarah's most trusted coworkers.

litafanforlife

This is a heartbreaking and beautiful episode. I am a Buffy/Angel fan until I die so those two just kill me. I loved Buffy getting the class protector award and Angel coming to the prom for Buffy. This episode definitely made me cry lol.

Effie

Yes they were extremely close friends during the show. I remember reading that David and Sarah struggled with the Angelus twist because they had such a close bond and it was hard acting those scenes. From what I read it seems they were each other's rock.

Effie

It was so satisfying watching you break down over Angel and Buffy haha...takes me back to how I felt when it first aired. Yes the heartbreaking thing about it was it was because life and their circumstance not because they stopped loving each other which is why I still ship them after all these years. It will be interesting to see how you feel about them as they go on their separate journeys....for me having seen the end I personally don't think Angel made the right call. I do think short term maybe because Buffy should have the chance to be normal for a bit...but yeah...will be interesting how you feel at the end.
