It sure looks like Parker had you fooled at the beginning of the episode, which I think was the intention. Great to see the return of several familiar faces. You can guess who I mean. By the way, I don't mind your ramblings, so I just watch your comments at regular speed.

Zak

This is an ok episode, not particularly special, Spike (always a win) and Harmony are the high points. As for the Parker and Buffy stuff, i'm very meh about it because the way Parker spoke to Buffy was something which automatically made me think "oh I know where this is going" and I was right so didn't really invest in that. Overall, its a good episode but not the most amazing.

I forgot it was a Domi Day. 🙂

Antonio

Permission to stake anyone who speeds-up Domi whilst she's talking 😡

Domi E

Totally did! And thank you :D

Domi E

Well I'm glad you weren't fooled like certain other people (coff coff ME)

Domi E

Please don't stake me Anthony it's the only way I can deal with my own ramblings hahaha.

Justafox305

I remember when I saw this episode and I was like...is that where The vampire diaries got the idea for the daylight vampire rings??

UTU49

When I saw the notification for this video, I jumped in my chair, pumped my fist and loudly yelled, "YES!" I swear to God that I'm an adult. lol. I just watched Dark and Skull watch a terrific episode of Avatar, so this is a really nice day reaction-wise.

Bri

I loved the Anya stuff. She's awesome 😍😍

The Harmony/Spike relationship is interesting. It's obviously not a healthy relationship. Spike is mean to her and treats her like shit, and she weaponises her sexuality to get him to do what she wants. And yet I think somehow they both do get what they need from it. Buffy and Parker - well I just don't understand how so many viewers like him at first. I hated him from the first fake smile the first time we saw him. He's the prototypical "pretty boy", pretending to be interested in a girl just to get in her pants. Note the way he keeps bringing the conversation back to either himself, or to how Buffy relates to him.

UTU49

I think every reactor has liked Parker at first... because Parker is essentially an actor who plays a role specifically designed to fool women into taking their pants off. It's really too bad he's so successful at it, because everyone deserves a more genuine person than Parker Poophead. This dude is a hair away from saying things like, "I swear to God you are the most beautiful woman I've ever seen," not because he actually thinks that, but because that might get a woman's pants off the fastest. What a colossal asshole. Damnit! I tried to get thru a Parker comment without swearing.

UTU49

Domi: Talks for half an hour. Me: Happily listens to every word at regular speed.

Steve Quast

For what it's worth, your talking a lot never gets unbearable.

Steve Quast

Yep. We already get to see vampire Harmony. And admit it: if you were made a vampire you would bite Willow, too.

Steve Quast

The sign on the building which you thought said "Faith" is either Gamma Alpha Pi or Gamma Alpha Eta (pronounced AY-ta). Unless that last one is an iota and some other letter, but I'm pretty sure Fraternities and Sororities only have three letters. Off the top of my head, I don't know if they've actually said the name of the fraternity. If they have I'm sure someone will say so. Here endeth the lesson.

Steve Quast

Okay, so now that we're here, I just want to throw something out there. This is not at all meant to be serious, but just more of a humorous sidebar showing some of the irony I've seen in the opinions of some fans. A number of fans, and some reactors, have taken issue with the inappropriateness between Buffy and Angel in seasons 1 and 2 (especially in season 1). And I completely understand this. Buffy is very young, she's a teenager, she's also technically underaged, and Angel, as he says to Joyce in season 3, is "old enough to be her ancestor." Because it's a tv show, and because of the unique situation between the two characters, and because the two of them really are part of a much larger world that the vast majority of people are unaware of, I never had any big problems with their relationship. Though I completely understand people who do. HOWEVER.....I have never heard anyone say anything about how Anya, who is an 1100 year old ex-demon who used to torture and kill men, is now very forward with Xander (including being very sexually forward). Granted Xander is of legal age now, so there's no issue there, but he's still very young and immature. Can you imagine how fans would had reacted if Angel acted the same way towards Buffy in season 1? "So Buffy....I'm really attracted to you. I think of you all the time. Sometimes in my dreams, you're completely naked." *Angel proceeds to disrobe* "I think the only way I can get over you is if you and I have sexual intercourse." *proceeds to say "sexual intercourse several more times throughout the conversation* "Now, let me just describe for you how I think this sexual intercourse ought to go. I don't think I should get behind you. I think face-to-face is the best way...." I think we all would have a field day with that lol. But yeah, I do want to make it clear that I 100% ship Xander and Anya and their interactions are definitely one of the best parts of this episode (and all in all it's a great episode). I thought I would just.....throw out some food for thought.

Steve Quast

Yeah, remember before, earlier in the episode, you were talking about how nice it was for Buffy to be dating a human. As it turns out, Parker's not human. He's not a demon, he's just not human. He's something....less. And Spike, Buffy and Parker just broke up. Must you hit on her already? Get it?.....hit....yeah, never mind....

Steve Quast

Spike, you were doing so well until you MADE HER MAD, haha. Episode 3's still killing it. Harmony came back, Spike came back, Anya came back. For how long we'll see, but for this episode, at least, it's pure bliss. Glad you enjoyed it. Your reaction to it was great.

Jordan Haddow

This episode is so cringetastic of all Buffy episodes. For the whole first half of the episode we are all sitting here cringing into ever smaller balls of hissing hatred for that jerk of jerks Parker, all the while as reactors who don't know what's coming are all googly eyes at him. I swear I spend most of the time in a fight with myself on whether I should just skip the horrors that are prancy Parker's flirtations or stick around and watch. So far, I've managed to watch at least knowing it'll pay off more once the tables turn and the reactor's reactions turn from gooey to soul searing loathing. As they should be. Okay, enough about garbage boy, now onto SPIKE. Yay. It's too bad that Joss had a hatred for the Spike character, which seems to appear in this episode. I mean, I know he's a vampire demon without a conscience, but still. It seems like they were really pushing the boundaries and forcing it this episode. OF course, if could be the director. There were a number of rough elements to this show, like the fight. It seemed al little jumpy and overly choreographed to me. Otherwise the episode was full of fun. Spike, Harmony, and also Anya. Surprise characters abounding. Potential for future hijinks are high.

Ron Fehr

Back in the days when Buffy was on its original run, there was still the precursor to voicemail, called an answering machine of course. To show my age, I remember the time even before answering machines. When someone wasn't available to answer the phone, you would just have to call another time.

Jordan Haddow

I haven't seen them, so can't say for certain, but I do know that a lot of rectors who watch Buffy after TVD say they see whole sections of Buffy that has been ripped off by that show.

Jordan Haddow

I know, me too. I love how this show can take some element that play such a minor role when introduced and can then just keep threading it through the show as it goes. Like Xander's military experience. Heck, the best part is that these seemingly useless tidbits that at first just filler around the storyline of an episode and up being critical later on. How Anya ended up being the key to the team understanding exactly what they Mayor was doing and then they were able to devise a strategy as to how to defeat him. Just so much fun.

Jordan Haddow

Also, doesn't she look just super cute with her bandaid. I don't know fi they spent a lot of time finding that color or just happened upon it, but it just works perfectly with her.

Jordan Haddow

I know. Honestly, I think one of the issues with the Buffy Angel relationship was a case of unreasonable nature of reality striking. If one goes back to the pilot and looks at Angel then, he was smaller, much leaner, and lets be honest, a bit more feminine. As we move through the seasons, the actor obviously filled out, grew wider, his head and jaw's more commonly viewed masculine elements filled out. I'm pretty sure that they show had intended Angel to be a guy who was turned into a vampire as a teenager, thus he was supposed to be eternally frozen in the body of a teenager just short of growing into a man. Thus, when he and Buffy would get together, their age gap wouldn't really be that pronounced on screen. Unfortunately reality set in and the actor aged in appearance and so they had to set his age of change higher, thus giving birth to the cringiness. It doesn't help that some reactors look up info on characters and find an age of 26 assigned to his appearance. I'm pretty sure that age was first mentioned in the Angel series, so that's 3 years after his character first showed up in the pilot. Looking at that pilot again, can anyone actually say that the show had always intended him to appear 26?

Jordan Haddow

Lol, ya, back in to stone age era days before cordless phones. I still remember when our rotary phone was mounted on the wall and we had one of those super long curly cords between it and the handset, so people could sit somewhere in the house while on the phone. I also remember how big of a ball of knots that stupid cord would turn into. Or heck, party lines. Did you ever have to deal with those? We had some friends whose parents were farmers way out of town. I just could never get used to their party line. For those too young to know, a party line is where the network is stretched so thing, several houses share the same phone line. Each house is assigned a different ring. If it's not your ring, you not supposed to pick it up, otherwise you could listen in on your neighbors phone calls, lol. As a kid, I just couldn't get that concept, so when everyone just stood around ignoring the phone ring, I would every time run over an pick it up.

Ron Fehr

I personally don't remember dealing with party lines, as I was still to young at the time. But I definitely remember some aunts and uncles talking about them.

Veronika

Ah yeah...this episode. I freaking hate Parker! :D I am a big Bangel shipper and this episode broke my Bangel heart when I first watched it because it made me think that Buffy didn't love Angel as much as I thought she did when she could move on this quickly. It took me a Passion of the Nerd's Buffy Guide to understand what was actually happening in this episode. I also found there a comment that Jane Espenson, who wrote this episode said in a commentary that in the scene between Buffy and Willow, Buffy was supposed to say the line:Buffy: "It's that the whole time, I kept thinking, hey, look at me with someone who isn't Angel. Look how much I'm not hung up with Angel anymore. Look how this is not all about Angel. God, how come I didn't see it?" But it was deleted. I think that if this line was kept in, it would be easier for me to understand immediately what was going on but that might be just my problem of being really thick and about 10 years old when I first watched Buffy :D it's so interesting to me to rewatch this show 10 years later and see sooo many things that I didn't before. Btvs is just so deep and everytime I watch it (and your amazing reactions to it) I find something new to think about. I am so glad I found TPN's Buffy guides because thanks to him I understand Buffy on a whole new level and I hope that after you finish both shows you will check it out. (but not before you finish Btvs and Ats because his analysis tends to be kind of spoilery). This episode is really interesting with the parallels between Buffy, Anya and Harmony and I love it! But the most important thing about this episode...SPIKE IS BACK!

Jordan Haddow

It can depend on where you live. I grew up in a rural farming town. So people out on the farms had to deal with party lines up to the 90s

Domi E

Urggghhh he’s the worst and I can’t believe I totally fell for it!!

Domi E

LOL YUP, absolutely! I thought the same thing!!

Domi E

Aw yay!! I’m so glad 😄

Domi E

Yup exactly!! Sooo good and Anya’s the best!!!

Domi E

Urgh I totally hadn’t noticed that, I’m gonna have to when I rewatch. I was totally fooled by him!!

Domi E

UTU49: Makes a nice comment Me: Smiles a lot 🥺😁 Thank you!

Domi E

Steve don’t drag me like this 😋

Domi E

Thank you for the lesson!! ☺️

Domi E

Oh my, Steve. That dialogue in Angel’s perspective made me cringe sooo hard. If Angel had done that I would have hated him so much but it really worked for Anya; so interesting!

Domi E

And great point Jordan!!

Domi E

Urgh so Joss hates Cordy and Spike? This is not going great for me!!!

Domi E

Oh damn that’s so interesting! Don’t remember ever hearing about party lines!

Domi E

Ahh I can’t wait to be able to watch his vids people have mentioned it quite a few times :D

Jordan Haddow

Joss had this idea from the beginning that vampires were supposed to be symbolic for toxic people. He had always wanted Buffy and Angel to break up to signify her growing out of toxic relationships. So he never really wanted Vampires to be viewed in much of a positive light. Angel is kind of the exception soulwise, but it was always built in that he wasn't good relationship wise to to the happiness catch. He really didn't like how much the fans latched onto Spike. I think it may have been more of a thing that he didn't like outside forces influencing which characters continued to be brought back on the show. In my mind though, the original though, his original idea that vampires were toxic for Buffy was flawed. In my mind, Buffy is closer to being a vampire than a normal human. She spends large amounts of time in the dark, she's even stronger than vampires, she spends a big chunk of her life being violent, she is constantly killing. Nevermind the valid point Spike brought up in this episode. It must be difficult for Buffy to be in a relationship with a normal guy when she has to constantly hold herself back from breaking, or as Spike put it, bruising him. I always think about how Scott would have reacted if he found out about Buffy being a Slayer. Personally, I don't think that character could have handled it.

UTU49

Jordan, I was thinking exactly the same thing. Great color. Specifically, great color on Willow.

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

Watching you love Parker at the beginning was so painful. NEVER trust a guy with eyebrows like that!!! ;) I hate how sad he makes Buffy :'( I love Anya and Xander, I love Oz admiring Giles' record collection. I don't really like Spike with Harmony though. Although I love them separately. I also low key hate that she wants to give Angel the gem. I understand why she does but I think it's a terrible decision to give an immortality ring to somebody who COULD become Angelus again. Giles looks thrilled (activate extreme sarcasm mode).

Domi E

Aw I thought it was so sweet she thought of him!!

Domi E

Yeah that’s a great point. Scott def wouldn’t have handled it well, I’m not sure P🤮rker would either!

Steve Quast

Imagine creating a character as amazing and ironic as Spike and not liking him. Joss, you're a putz.

litafanforlife

I'm a Bangel shipper and this episode broke my heart too. For me though, it wasn't because it made me think that Buffy didn't love Angel as much as I originally thought. In a sad way it kinda made it clear how much she loves/loved Angel. It broke my heart to see Buffy so desperate and trying to cling to this new guy in a hope that she could get Angel out of her system or tell herself that she wasn't still hung up on Angel. I think you're right about the line you quoted, if that was kept in, it would have been clearer for a lot of viewers.

litafanforlife

Parker is kind of a giant piece of garbage, isn't he? I got a bad feeling about him from the beginning, and not just because I love Buffy/Angel lol. I legit had a bad feeling about him. Besides Parker being a jerk, I enjoyed the episode. Spike and Harmony are pretty entertaining and also very messed up and Anya is really funny too. Xander's "And the amazing thing- still more romantic than Faith" line is great lol. I was happy that Buffy wanted to send the ring to Angel.

Hosman

I feel bad for Buffy. Her first 2 sexual experiences ended basically the same way. She wakes up alone. Her first scene in "Innocence" with Angel after she finds him after he disappeared was similar to Parker. Angel was like "You have a lot to learn about men" and that it was just a good time, nothing more. Parker has the very same view on sex. That scene with Buffy and Angel (after he turned into Angelus) mirrors the Parker-Buffy situation pretty well. I wonder if Buffy thinks all men are like that because of her first 2 times.
