The story of Rachel wasn’t just a side story that was tacked on to fill the time. If Angel had been a daytime helper, Rachel would likely be one of those who’d have fallen through the cracks, she would have been left “in the dark”. I think they used the real ring because, as we saw, Angel and Doyle recognized it immediately – it must give off some demon vibes. Spike had already seen it before, plus they didn’t necessarily know how it would go down, that they wouldn’t have to directly hand him the ring.

Zak

Not really relevant to the episode but Cordy looks amazing here. The actual episode.....it is decent, more spike is always a good thing, the other vampire villain....not a big fan of him but oh well. A decent crossover, kept it simple.

zerofk

Cordelia looking amazing is always relevant on Domi's patreon.

I was so looking forward to your reaction of seeing Spike and Oz and you did not disappoint! Bear in mind this is only the third episode of Angel and they needed to establish that the storylines of Btvs and Ats could intertwine so that when you only watched Ats or Btvs you would miss something. They needed the fans of Buffy to want to watch Angel too...but they also needed new fans, so this episode while having callbacks and parallels to Buffy for the Buffy fans, if you have never seen Buffy but watched this episode, you would still be able to understand what is happening.

The series is still trying to establish itself so there are some weaker parts in these early episodes, but it's understandable - being a spin-off, Angel has the additional difficulty of also having to be different enough from Buffy to establish it's own identity while not being so different as to alienate the existing fanbase. Spike's narration at the start is brilliant.

Spike making fun of Angel from the rooftop is so good. And there are some scenes where he's genuinely scary too. But I'm not so much a fan of setting his hair on fire - making fun of a bad guy makes them less scary, and scarier is better.

Season 1 of Angel is definitely pretty weak, especially the early episodes, but the use of Spike here is well done. The Angel and Spike relationship is so fascinating and foundational to both shows. In particular, I find it very interesting that Spike was willing to ally with Buffy (of all people) to stop Angelus from destroying the world in Becoming and yet equally willing to try and stop souled Angel here in order to get the Gem of Amara for himself.

Wow, I really love reactors. When I saw this was up I did this little dance and silent squeal... like a 2-year-old girl being excited to see her birthday cake. It was, of course, very manly. :/

Shaun Houghton

What was manly, the dance or the cake?

UTU49

lol. Everybody loves a manly birthday cake.

This episode doesn't go into the considerable arguments that can be made for and against the ring. On the one hand, I feel it was stupid for Angel to destroy the ring, because shouldn't they keep the ring so that they have it available in case of an emergency? On the other hand, my interpretation is that the ring is so dangerous that Angel would prefer that no one have the ring than he have it. On the third hand (I'm running out of hands, here guys!), couldn't Angel have gotten Doyle, or Cordy, or Buffy, or Giles to hide the ring somewhere? Then if things ever get REALLY bad, Angel would still have the option of using the ring. Right?

UTU49

Random thought. If I were one of your family members or close friends, it would take all of my willpower to not call you "Dummie" as my own personal silly nickname for you. My brother and I had multiple weird childhood nicknames for each other that we kept using throughout much of our 20s. There are whole chunks of my brain that I can barely control. :( :P

FernWithy

Unless he lost his soul again and knew exactly who he had to kill to get the ring...

Ron Fehr

Yes, I loved Spike's narration. One of my favorite lines was, "Watch the hair. Never the hair. "

Ron Fehr

Also, viewers could tell how Spike felt about Angel. Buffy viewers already knew, obviously, but I'm pretty sure new viewers could understand.

Ron Fehr

I like it when Domi refers to herself in the third person.

Steve Quast

Finally getting a chance to watch. That Spike monologue in the beginning is so amazing. It's one of my favorite moments of the show. Freaking hilarious.

Steve Quast

PS The mono-syllabolic dialogue between Angel and Oz is great as well.

Steve Quast

I'm trying to think if there's a time up to this point in the Buffyverse when we've seen Spike and Angel duke it out, vamp faces and everything. I think this is the first time.

Steve Quast

Spike: Speaking of little Buff, I ran into her recently. Your name didn't come up... Actually it did, through your lips...sir!

Steve Quast

That moment where Angel gets to walk in the sun for the first time in over 200 years is everything. Such a powerful scene for me. PS When a ginger tells you you're pale, you know you're pale...very pale....paler than most people.

Steve Quast

I'm really glad you seem to like this episode as much as I do.

UTU49

We could definitely head-canon that Angel thought all of that through.

Bri

The title is definitely Bangel related. When Angel breaks up with Buffy, he says to her that she needs to be with someone who can take her into the light. His commitment to being 'in the dark'ness, so he can help others who live in darkness, has to be his main commitment, because a) he hates that people suffer and b) he wants to ease suffering because he's caused so much of it. He knows Buffy has to be in the dark too, to a certain extent, because of her calling, but he can see a world where her relationship is a source of light (comfort, security, joy, pleasure) rather than characterised by further darkness (worry, pain).

Domi E

I agree with zerofk, if it were up to me my Patreon would be 99% Cordelia praise :) But yes I thought the crossover was pretty awesome!! Excited to see what they'll do with the next ones!

Domi E

Yup! Great point. It worked really well!

Domi E

Yeah it definetly is hard but I think they're doing a great job! And that narration killed me, he's too good!!

Domi E

Yeah that's true! But I think they're trying to go away from Spike being just a bad guy, that was s2 Spike... This one feels different, we shall see... We shall seeee....

Domi E

LOL. Spike has great moral standards, clearly :P

Domi E

This makes me so happy! :D And no such thing as manly or girly, people react (pun intended) the way they want!

Domi E

Yeah that’s a great point, the ring def can get messy and dangerous, unfortunately!

Domi E

Hahaha I love that nickname! Adds up well I can’t complain ;)

Domi E

Oh yeah that’s a good point! I don’t think they had a chance to in School Hard but maybe that was the closest they got?

Domi E

It really was so moving, I loved it!! And hahaha, true that!

Domi E

Ohhh amazing interpretation thank you so much for sharing, Bri!

Bri

"We're usually laconic".... Love it. It harkens back to Enemies, Willow talking relationships with Buffy; "Buffy, I too know the love of a taciturn man, "

Steve Quast

Remember when they first met on Buffy? Angel was Angelus and Oz was a werewolf, and all they did was growl at each other. Taciturn indeed.

Steve Quast

Yeah, in Buffy it was always Spike and Buffy fighting each other. Angel and Spike never engaged in battle. Maybe the closest was at the end of season 2 when Spike rose from his chair and hit Angelus from the back lol.

UTU49

Oh my goodness. I think I had a dream about Charisma Carpenter, and it might have been because I read your comment, Zak. It was nothing weird. I was just looking at her and trying to make sure to call her "Charisma" rather than "Cordelia".

UTU49

I've always loved that this cross-over with the gem of Amara, Spike, and Oz... is made up of 2 episodes called "The Harsh Light of Day" and "In the Dark". It connects the 2 shows enough that it helps make Buffy and Angel feel like one thing (which we, of course, call the Buffyverse).

Ron Fehr

Then Drusilla interfered before any fisticuffs could have happened between them.
