I have to say I think I took this title very literally because I do indeed look like fear itself watching this episode. Be warned, it is chaotic. And yes, the coffee was definetly BAD.

Just noticed Oz - in costume as God - responded "You're welcome" to Buffy's "Thank the Lord!"

Ron Fehr

Since Buffy uses her strength to work out her issues, the writers had to find another way to give her a vulnerable side. Hence, it's often her emotions that take a battering.

I love this episode so much! It’s fun yet such a great character study. Plus the writing feels extra witty. The Oz as God bit is one of my favorite moment. Especially later with the throw-away line later in the the episode. Oz turns off the speaker. Buffy says “Thank the Lord” and Oz says “you’re welcome”. I love that it works on 2 levels- just responding to the implied gratitude to Oz for turning it off but also Oz responding as “the Lord” since that’s his costume.

Ha, the Bent-Necked Lady was my first thought as well :o) Thankfully, this wasn't nearly as scary as Hill House, but at least that show didn't have spiders....

I love the episode, so cool to see all their fears. Particularly fun to rewatch and realise how early they stop noticing Xander - it's just after the "Thank the Lord" joke. This one is funny and scary and thought provoking, a combo that few shows even attempt never mind bring off as well as this :D I love Anya but she does have a habit of bringing up the elephant in the room. Can be a good thing, can be a bad thing. I also love how they mesh the fears so well, Xander fears being ignored, Buffy fears being left alone, perfect combo. I don't think Anya and Giles were in the house long enough to have their fears realised but we know Anya's now anyway lol And Giles with a chainsaw 😘 I also love Buffy's 'I'm embarrassed of my dad' attitude to Giles in his costume 🤣 Poor guy, sitting on his own wolfing down the chocolate lol And Buffy needs to realise Parker is a douche and get over him because she's worth a million of him!! Oh and also, the fact that it's the fear itself that is the enemy, not the thing you fear (which is really tiny in comparison) Anyway, superb reaction :D

Veronika

Your reaction to Giles wielding the chainsaw was priceless! I love this episode so much and seeing your reaction to it was amazing!

Anitusar

I kind a like "electric sword thingy".

Nica Marie

The episode title references the quote by Franklin D. Roosevelt "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

GaveUp

Chainsaw? Surely you mean electric sword thing!

Bri

"Mi Casio es su Casio". I love Oz.

I love this episode. This episode shows why they should all be in lots and lots of therapy. Surely the Council have access to like, a network of therapists (maybe psychics or priestesses)? But yeah, so much of becoming an actualised person is being able to pin down the emotional crux of whatever deep fear drives your unconscious decision making. Fascinating to see what the gang's are. Also Oz rocking and saying his mantra, desperate, gets me every fucking time.

Halloween or not, if you jump out at someone on the street just to scare them you deserve to be hit. Well Ethan didn't show up. Bummer. Still, this is a pretty nice episode. Some fun scenes and also some nice character moments with the gang facing their fears. I also love JOyce's openness when talking with Buffy about being gunshy.

UTU49

This episode is a nice exploration of the characters' fears... but it's also just really funny. I loved when Oz is concentrating on trying to figure out how to improve the sound quality of the speakers, and Xander says, "Sensing a disturbance in the Force, Master?"

Ron Fehr

The machine that Giles brought with him to the haunted house was a chainsaw.

Ron Fehr

Obviously I hadn't watched the entire video when I mentioned this.

Zak

It's interesting that their fears here are different from their nightmares in the season 1 episode despite the fact that certain topic such as Buffy's dad where bought back up, personally I think it is a good thing as to much repetition just isn't healthy. I think this is a pretty good episode on the whole.

Domi E

It works out super well though!!

Domi E

I have to agree with Anitusar in this, I must say. I’m all about professionalism.

Domi E

Haha that’s too great, I LOVE OZ!!! And I love Willows line about the close relationship to God 😂

Domi E

Omggg great minds think alike, Anthony! And haha… Good point!

Domi E

Thank you RJ! Knew you’d love Giles and his chainsaw!

Domi E

Thank you so much!! And haha yes GaveUp, valid correction. Don’t know why people keep calling it a “chainsaw”. Weird made up words!!

Domi E

Oh great reference! Hadn’t caught that, thank you!

Domi E

I’ve been begging them (BUFFY!) to go to therapy for so long that... I have to agree!

Domi E

Totally agreed! And I’m still waiting on Mr. Ethan, I have hope 👀

Domi E

Hahaha. All these small little quotes that I many times miss are too great!!

Domi E

Yup totally! Super interesting comparisons to be made!

Steve Quast

Finally watching. Yes, be afraid. Very afraid.

Steve Quast

What the hell's wrong with HER? You're lucky she didn't knock you out, kid!

Steve Quast

"I have thoughts....I forgot what they were....but I have them." Why does that sound like such a Domi thing to say? :P

UTU49

Are you sure? I always thought that thing was called a "munchy teeth loop".

Poor Buffy; the Angel thing is bad, then just as she starts recovering from that & feeling safe enough to open up, another bad experience... combine that with the upheaval from change in circumstances, it's not surprising she's having a bad time. Not only is Giles feeling less relevant after being fired from the council, at least he was still able to interact with the scoobies but now he's missing that a lot thanks to them being in college, he's clearly feeling pretty lonely - much the same applies to Xander too. I like the little call-back to the previous halloween one & getting savvy enough to take precautions, but things still ending up completely different from what they're expecting. Your chainsaw confusion... it's really easy to forget english isn't your first language :)

Domi E

Great points Stewart! Poor Buffy :(
