Well the last episode of Angel was simply heart-wrenching. Hopefully this one is more light-hearted and fun. Joss wouldn't be so evil as to have two tear-jerking episodes in a row......right?

Steve Quast

PS I'm really enjoying your alternate titles.

Jordan Haddow

Haven't watched yet, but I thought I would jump in with some context. This wasn't a planned storyline. The actor playing Doyle was having issues with drug addiction and was being let go from the show. I think he entered rehab not long after filming this episode. It's a sad story all on it's own. Truly a crushing episode though. Especially following the last Angel episode.

Stewart Denew

Oh dear... all this following on from the previous two... you need all the hugs.

Steve Quast

*at the beginning of the episode* "I really can't cry again." ................

Emptysea93

Actually, this is only partly true. Joss Whedon confirmed both before and after Glenn Quinn's death that Doyle was meant to die during the first season. However, they moved those plans up due to Glenn Quinn's drug use causing him to be removed from the show early. Doyle was always meant to die, Whedon specifically created him as a tragic character who would die by the end of the season, specifically to help set apart this show from Buffy. Which is generally a bit more light hearted overall.

UTU49

Don't worry, Domi. The Buffyverse never has 2 heart-breaking episodes in a row. Oh, wait. Yeah, oops. That's wrong

Richard Ashton

"You get a Spike you can love". That's one hell of a declaration...

Steve Quast

They FINALLY found someone you could ship Cordelia with and then they kill him off in that very episode....

Daniel Schlösser

Especally hard to watch for a German like me. It is ovisious this military demons are similar to the Nazis. They are proud of their pure origin and persecuate all others (like the Nazis the Jews). Even their uniforms look similar. We would have needed some more heroes in those times...

Denni Caid

Looking at the episode critically, it's certainly got flaws - the clan of Nazi demons determined to extinguish all demons that have had their blood “diluted” with human blood is heavy handed at best, and it doesn’t really fit with the Buffyverse lore introduced in Buffy S3 with the Mayor’s ascension, where Anya told us that all of the demons that walk the earth now are corrupted, or human hybrids. Parts of the episode are pretty slow, and there’s a certain amount of cheese factor in Doyle and Cordelia’s final scene, where he grabs and kisses her, then switches his face into demon form and says “too bad we’ll never know if this is a face you could learn to love” The moment after Doyle’s sacrifice is just stunning, everyone trying to process what just happened, and Cordelia throwing herself horrified into Angel’s arms. The absolute best thing about the episode though is the bit at the end where Angel and Cordelia are rewatching the video she made of Doyle reading her cheesy commercial sounding incredibly awkward doing it. Except now that last “Is that it? Am I done?” means something completely different now and *runs off sobbing*

Dan

Regarding no demons actually being pure... that doesn't exactly clash with the Nazi metaphor. The Nazi idea of their supposed "racial purity" was always largely bogus and they were into making mythical origin stories for themselves.

Shaun Houghton

So Dan, you're saying they, mythed the mark. 😁😁

UTU49

They were mythtaken.

UTU49

Maybe Doyle's gonna be okay. Maybe he's just gone for coffee with Jenny Miss Pretty Lady Weekend. Is that too much to hope for? T_T

Glenn Quinn - Doyle - is so good in this episode. The way he delivers that line "Is that it? Am I done?" is perfect. At the beginning of the episode it's just a funny line of a guy doing something he hates and wishes it was over. At the end it's pure heartbreak. The nazi metaphor is too heavy handed and full of plot holes. That part of the episode I don't like. But the character moments with Doyle and with Cordelia make it all worthwhile.

Jordan Haddow

O.O Oooooooo, Domi gonna be mad you ripped that bandaid off. Ouch.

Jordan Haddow

I know. No matter how many times I see this episode, that line always gets me. They did an amazing job of making it quirky and oddball funny in the beginning of the episode, then in the end, not only does it have such an impact, it's an impact like a slow moving car accident you see coming but can't look away from.

Jordan Haddow

Actually the thing that kind of hangs me up on the logic of this episode is not that line. Buffy saw these demons in the hell dimension. It could be posited that they just come over into our dimension for cleansing campaigns. The part that I find weird is the Mayor from s3. He became a pure demon and became huge. When Anya said that demons on earth aren't pure, it also implied that true pure demons are vastly more powerful. These guys are neither smarter nor powerful. I don't think they are even pure in the sense of being like the Mayor after ascension. I think it's more that they feel they are pure in purpose. In one of their rants, he says that they are doing the bidding of those higher up and bringing back true evil or some such crap like that. I think they aren't so much slaughtering half breed demons as much as ones that coexist with humans. The demons Angel is helping are peaceful. I don't know, but I agree the pure blood stuff doesn't totally add up. By the way, love the myth gags.

Shaun Houghton

That depends, tell me about your rats again.

UTU49

Yeah, low rats are important. I don't think anyone should underestimate how beneficial low rats are. Does anyone want TALL rats?

Raven Dark

This made me laugh-cry way more than is appropriate.

Richard Ashton

There is a big difference between a Nazi and a German. Almost 60 years ago I was learning German at school and nobody mentioned WWII. There was even an exchange student called Ulrich for 6 months. It was great.

Domi E

Joss Whedon is literally THE DEVIL. That was so incredibly mean!! And thank you 😄

Domi E

That really is so sad :(

Domi E

They really don’t care about my feelings AT ALL!!

Domi E

I would like to sit down and have a chat with whoever decided this was an acceptable idea. It is not. Joss Whedon I am coming for u.

Domi E

Completely. It was so devastating 😭😭😭

Domi E

THE AUDACITY OF THESE WRITERS!!! Though idk maybe that just means they’re saving Cordelia for me.

Domi E

Yeah I def didn’t love that part of the episode, it really just felt wrong

Domi E

Yeah, great points!!!

Domi E

Hey UTU49, meet me in the parking lot in the back 🙅🏻‍♀️I’m ready to fight

UTU49

"Is that it? Am I done?" It's funny exactly once... and then never again... ever.

UTU49

Wow, Domi! That's a spectacular example of finding a positive way of looking at things.

UTU49

Nope, sorry. I can't fight and cry at the same time.

Steve Quast

Finally got a chance to watch the end of your comments, haha. Yes, this whole Buffyverse experience may be a sign that you need to follow a lawyer career so that you can sue these writers for all they're worth and make them suffer. And yes, you should definitely send them the bill for law school.

Steve Quast

Your reaction to the title for the next episode sent me into some major LOL's.

Ron Fehr

I like to think that your knowing about Wesley may have softened the blow a little after Doyle's sacrifice

Veronika

I've finally managed to find the time and catch up on your reactions and damn...the pain! 😭 I really wouldn't want to be in angel writer's shoes right now because of all the lawsuits they'll be facing 😅 the audacity they have after the last episode... This one really hurts...I really loved Doyle and I thought the trio's dynamic was incredible. We'll see where that goes...Absolutely amazing reaction as always! 🥰 But hate to see you sad 😢 hopefully the writers will give you and the characters a little break...

Ron Fehr

Question. Would you let Wolfram and Hart represent you if they did it pro-bono? You've got lawsuits building up. Lol

Ryan Martinez

"Is that it? Am I done?" That line destroys me everytime.
