Domi continues to shade Olivia by calling her Julia throughout this video looooooooool

Domi E

Oh my gosh wait. I’m sorry. I don’t know how I got this mixed up. I’m so sorry. I promise this was not shade, AT ALL.

HuntingSwan

I found it hilarious!!!! <3

Domi E

Now I feel really bad, I can’t believe I mixed it up. I almost skipped posting a reaction this week because I’ve been having some personal problems, so I promise this is not on purpose it’s just my brain having a hard time catching up, I’ve had a lot on my mind

HuntingSwan

Oh hon no! Please don;t feel bad! I only pointed it out as a joke, I love you! Don't let anyone get to you, stay true to yourself <3

x_Rhi_x

awww no its really funny! i love it! <3 also hoping you feel better Domi. Its always perfectly fine for people to have their opinions. People can be really defensive over stupid things but dont let it get to you!

zerofk

Well she did call Jenny "Ms. Weekend" for like 5 years straight, so it's certainly on brand...

Ron Fehr

You're definitely right. Olivia was introduced in a weird way. I feel that she should probably have been in more of the earlier episodes., possibly as a companion of sorts for Giles. It still seemed like somewhat of a surprise when she suddenly appeared on Hush. As for how he even knew her, my guess is that Giles met her during his rebellious period, when he was still friends with Ethan Raine.

Richard Ashton

I thought it was because she disregarded Baseball Movies in her first lines.

Steve Quast

Don't feel bad. It's an honest mix-up. And I think I speak for everyone when I say we're laughing with you, not at you ;) Seriously though, I hope you're doing well. Sorry to hear that you're dealing with personal issues and I hope things get better soon. Thank you for still being willing to put up a reaction for us. And listening to your reasons for not warming up to Olivia, I think they're understandable.

Steve Quast

For an episoded titled "Doomed," it really is quite enjoyable.

Nerk Derk

From Hush, you can assume that Olivia has known Giles long enough that he was immature enough to claim to be a member of Pink Floyd. So, probably his literal "Ripper" days. It's assumed she's visiting from far away (probably England, given the accent, as she does fly).

Steve Quast

"God was like, let's shake things up, and that was my first earthquake." LOL And on your birthday, too. A gift like that is hard to top.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

My take on the season 1 references is that the writers needed to impart on us that was a "real" apocalypse, a moderately big thing in the Buffyverse that needed to be dealt with, in order to give tension to the relationships, but only had a single 45 minute episode to do it. So one of the ways to do that is to throw is back to when the stakes were high and the tensions raised, and it works. Olivia was definitely brought in quickly, but again I feel like it's about where do we dedicate our storytelling time. Giles needs at least a little forward progress on that front but we've got so many other avenues that need exploring that something has to give, in this case in the form of just dropping in a premade character in lieu of being able to take the time to build her up. Is it kinda lazy writing? Yeah, kinda I guess. But it's also necessary just to keep everything rolling at the same time. I always kinda shrug my shoulders when this episode comes up "Oh yeah the aftermath of Hush" but then am always surprised at how low-key well done it is.

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

I, personally, detest Julia. I mean, she hardly says anything, can't be bothered to even show up in any episodes, never helps out, never tries to research. She's just, kinda, not there for most of the time 🤣😜 Love ya domi 🥰

Richard Ashton

I have just had a thought for a new YouTube channel - "Learn Portuguese with Domi".

Steve Quast

Yes, I agree, Willow is hot. Percy, I like you and everything, but your taste in women is a little off. I paused a few times just now to read what you were swearing in Portuguese. Love it lol.

William Hult

I have to say that the comments last time were way over the top about your reaction to Olivia. I won't say that i didn't roll my eyes at you being so hostile to her character, but that's part of the charm of a reaction video! I won't always agree with your opinion about characters or plot lines, but I watch because I think you are funny and that you have a good perspective on the show. I just wanted to say that I hope the reaction you got on your last video hasn't made you feel that you can't express your feelings about the show, and that I always love coming home from work and watching an episode of your reactions, and I'm certain that we're many that feel that way!

GenU

What?! It's Monday already? It seems like only yesterday that Domi was combusting over Tara.

Loves Bitca

Yeah, I used to refer to girls I liked, boyfriends by the wrong name and pretend I didn't do it on purpose too.

Darrell Palmer

Hey Domi, I'm here to cut you some slack. As patreons we have seen the full arc of the series and have our own perspective on how Julia fits in. You've only seen her twice and I agree that we don't really see any chemistry between her and Giles in those episodes. I don't blame the writers, I blame the casting or direction. I don't blame you for your reaction to this. Please put this behind you and just be you...

Iarna

Ok, so your intro double-take got me curious and I played the intros for Hush and Doom side-by-side and what they cut was some unmemorable Buffy-in-the-cemetary shots which is why it's hard to see without that direct comparison.

Anitusar

Yeah, cannot agree more. I am here for domi's reactions, not an echo chamber of my thoughts. And it is not like domi wants to fight every poor child that is mentioned on the show like some other reactor ... (even if Alley is mostly right in doing so) :D

Iarna

Regarding Olivia, well, this is a show with an entirely white main cast and so when folks react negatively when a black character is introduced... I gather it was not uncommon for folks to react negatively to Kendra as well, and that kind of created an unfortunate through line. Portions of the fandom have also been defensive to broader criticism of how the Buffy (the show) handled race. All of this makes this a bit of a sore spot.

zerofk

This is a rather mediocre episode for me - not bad, but not great, just middle of the road. But this reaction was great :-D I'm glad you really liked it. I agree that the dialogue is very good this episode. Some very quotable moments. And I appreciate the subtites for the Portuguese swearing :-D

Yziel

This is one of my favorite epsiodes of the season but I'm quite biased towards anything with Spike in it :)

zerofk

When Riley said "we will bag it" about the demon I always assumed the "we" was talking about him and his commando buddies, not about him and Buffy. That would be nice though if it was about Buffy.

TheMew

With Olivia they didn't have a whole lot of explanation but I think you may have just missed it in 4x01 because you were surprised to see her. In that episode she calls him Ripper and they say she is visiting from England and while she is there looked him up. So they just kind of reconnected and had a good time and then she decided to come back and visit in Hush and it's just basically they are enjoying the time they have and that's really it. It wasn't just sex perse but it also wasn't really serious enough for it to be a "relationship" and be shipping them or anything and then at the end she is a bit freaked out by the Supernatural stuff and her and Giles have a conversation and that's where it's left for now. I think you may have just read a little too much into it because of missing a few lines and thinking her being there was more serious than it was. It's cool though stuff happens and sometimes things are missed. People should be nicer about it though.

Thom Purdy

I love it when you swear in Portugese!

Thom Purdy

A contradiction of feelings. Welcome to the Buffyverse!

Jordan Haddow

I think it showed how much she still has Jenny on her mind. Jenny + Olivia = Julia.

Jordan Haddow

It's just your Jenny love creeping in. Jenny + Olivia = Julia. I thought it was hilarious as soon as I figured out who you were referencing when saying Julia. Also, please don't let the more aggressive comments get you down. Some supposed fans like to be quite opinionated and forget you reactors are half putting on a show. We sign up for the reactions, and bigger than life reactions frankly sell. Alley took flak all season 4, because as you know, she's bigger than life and likes to get passionate about her opinions, just like you. Don't let a vocal minority beat you down, most of us (what I like to think of as real reactor fans) understand reactors may have opinions other than our own and keep in mind that an over the top reaction may just be part of the show. Keep it up. I put it in my comment for the last video, but I completely understood your attitude towards Olivia. She's some interloper who just springs up in Giles life. No real character generation or usual introductions first. In a show like this, it can be easy to be edgy about her as such characters tend to be bad. When I see her, I tend to think of Ford from season two's Lie To Me. An old friend who turns up just to stab you in the back.

Jordan Haddow

I don't know. I think the look back had a few more things going for it. One being the growth of our team. Back in season 1, when the earth quake happened and we found out about the end, it was so huge. Here though, basically the same thing happened, but it wasn't such a big event. It's kind of like when you are playing a game. When you reach the level one boss the first time, it's a big deal. Going on, when your on level four, the same boss character wouldn't be nearly as hard to deal with. You are experienced and have leveled up. It kind of feels like that with Buffy in this episode. It's an apocalypse, but it also just feels like a Tuesday. Just another part of her week. The Riley thing seems to be bigger. Also, season four seems to have our team drifting apart some. Notice how happy Domi was to see Willow and Zander back together again. With the callback to old times, we also are given a contrast as to how the team was back then to now. Zander and Willow were constantly together and Buffy rarely didn't show up for Willow at a party. Now, it almost feels unusual to see them all together. My thoughts at least.

Jordan Haddow

I have to say, I've never liked Percy. The only reason he was ever nice to Willow was because Vamp Willow threw him over a pool table and then choked him out. The guy was a self absorbed jackass from the beginning. I would have liked it if Willow gave him a swift kick to the nards or used her witchy power to toss something at his head. I know they were using that scene to put Willow in a certain mood, but still. It would have been great. Guys like that really need a line up of people (like in the movie airplane) giving swift kicks to the nards.

Jordan Haddow

Still, it's a show made in the 90's. Portions of the fandom need to keep that in mind. Even Friends, one of the biggest shows of all time has garnered complaints about how it handled race. Most major shows of the 90's have issues, especially when viewed by an audience who grew up in the current generation. There is a difference between a show and the reactor watching the show. There is also a thing called manners. It's coincidence that the character Domi was disliking was black. I never once heard Domi reference her race in a negative fashion or make any form of negative comment regarding race. Her dislike of the character is completely understandable, when she is contrasted to Jenny's character. A character that was introduced slowly and who's relationship with Giles grew organically on the screen. Olivia just appeared our of nowhere a couple of times as Gile's "orgasm buddy". Did the show betray some background racial issues by casting a black woman as nothing more than a play partner? Maybe. Did they maker her sterotypical, hardly. She's British, classy, independent, artistic, and intelligent. If Domi was being racist, I could see a lash-back being feasible. Just because people thought or felt that though, doesn't excuse being harsh or aggressive with her. People need to keep in mind the time the show was made, the over the top nature of Domi's reactions, and the need to put a little thought into things before commenting. Also manners would be good too.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I don't disagree with any of that, I just think it's by design. The fact that it's a big deal and also just Tuesday is meant to reinforce the idea of how difficult Buffy's life is and why she feels as down on relationships as she does. There could be an apocalypse tomorrow that she might have to die to prevent and that kinda puts a damper on things. Also the growing apart I feel is intentional. That's exactly what happens to folks in their early 20s. They're trying to figure out who they are, what they're doing etc They move away, make new friends, drift apart, make mistakes. Part of what made Buffy so great is that it so accurately portrayed the life cycle of a young person while most of its viewership was going through the exact same thing, literally growing up with the show. Whether you were Willow the nerd who went to college and overachieved but is self conscious and trying to discover who she is in a specific way, or Xander who just entered the workforce and is struggling to find what he wants to do and just keep a roof over his head, there was something there for everyone in some way. I think season 4 gets maligned a lot for being disjointed and I think at least a little bit of is intentional. It's supposed to. The entire show is about tension between growing up in this supernatural world and just growing up. We can pick nits about other things and they'd be fair. And maybe I'm just trying to defend the show I love so much. But I also think that a lot the stuff that happens around this time that fans don't like had to happen for it to be what it was.

Jordan Haddow

It's not one of my favorite episodes, but it is a pretty good one. It digs up a lot of the old stuff the group had lived through and kind of processes it in current times. Buffy's history with men. Her death and first apocalypse. How the team used to mesh so well and how things just feel different now. Like you mentioned, it was so nice to just have Willow and Xander back together again as just them. It seems like forever since that's happened, yet back during season one, they were inseparable. Even the hotly contested Olivia. Is it just that she is Gile's "orgasm buddy", or is the lack of our seeing their relationship more indicative of Giles not being part of the group so much anymore. Only seeing glimpses of her kind of gives us the feeling like we are missing out on portions of his life. Buffy does seem to be getting wrapped up in Riley and now his work. Heck, she missed meeting up with Willow at the party. More than that, she's even lying to Willow regarding Riley. The episode does seem to deal with a lot. I like season four a lot for that though. On the surface there is this and that going on. Under the surface though, there is a lot going on too. The whole dynamic seems to have changed. The writing of this season faced some challenges and we can't say how various elements were affected. Like Oz leaving when he did. Still, I think there is plenty to look forward to, and I definitely can't wait to see your next reaction. Keep up the good work Domi.

Melissa Murphy

I'm kind of glad you explained it cause for me even as over the top as you are(nothing wrong with that) it was extreme and I usually never begrudge a reactor their opinion even if I disagree because its usually story based but the reaction to Olivia(not Julia) was so over the top I found myself getting angry and that never happens. I do love your reactions so i will keep watching but I wanted to explain my point of view on this matter

Jordan Haddow

Actually, I agree with you. A lot of fans don't like season four as much as others, but it was a great season for character growth. Much of the growth in young people (well people in general) is trying new directions, getting distracted by things, letting old things go, and making mistakes. I love the psychology of the motivations behind characters actions, and this season is layered with all of that. The unfortunate thing about this season is though, the forces outside its control. Like Seth Green leaving early in the season and various other factors. I really wonder sometimes what the original arc would have been like without the changes. I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have had Tara so early, so I welcome that change. Still, the season did have to go into rewrites, so some of the bumpiness can be blamed on that.

Jon Dub

Why in the hell would anyone just assume that any hatred towards Olivia is due to her being black? What a messed up mindset! Everyone who watches Domi knows that Domi was a massive Jenny fan, and she shipped Giles and Jenny excessively, so Domi is going to be wary of any love interest for Giles that isn't Jenny. Note: The actress who plays Olivia is quite popular here in Britain and was on a reality show and is actually quite a huge bitch, so my opinion of her is tainted also :)

CeNedra

You're getting grief about Giles & Olivia..? GG, yet I saw it coming 🙄🙄 just deflect by saying you absolutely hate Spike with all your heart 😂 that'll take their mind off Olivia 🤣🤣🤣

Loves Bitca

I still can't believe the people who took the Olivia comments so personally. I mean I like Olivia, but it was funny and it was very clear that it was not an attack on the Olivia character as we saw Domi making the comments before Olivia was the one that came in. She was "hating" whoever it was going to be if it was a girl that Giles was having over. It was the concept not the personality.

Bud Haven

You were talking about Buffy and Riley's relationship possibly being doomed. We saw a big reason why it could be. When Buffy called Riley "Teutonic" B - You think girls need help and guys can take care of themselves? R- Yes. If anyone doesn't need taking care of, it's Buffy. If a need to be taken care of, is part of Riley's idolization of women, he is going to sorely disappointed.

Ray D

I’m super indifferent towards Olivia. But I don’t think there is a reason to hate her as passionately as you did. She basically was introduced as one of Giles old friends from England who he had a “friends with benefits” relationship with. Giles was fired as a watcher and because of the school burning down is jobless. Not to mention his girlfriend was murdered. His character is supposed to be sad and kind of aimlessly not sure what to do with his life at this point. My option is, let the guy get some action and be happy for him. It’s clearly not some grand romantic storyline, it’s an aimless, jobless guy, who called up an old flame/friend from his homeland to get some. So while Olivia hasn’t done anything to make me care all that much for her, she also hasn’t done anything to elicit any hate either. She’s just kind of there in the background being inoffensive and I always barely even notice her or remember that she’s there when I rewatch. It’s your reaction so I’m not criticizing you at all. How ever you feel is totally valid. But I just didn’t think she did anything one way or the other to illicit such a strong reaction positive or negative. It felt jarring how much you hated her honestly.

Steve Quinn

I was very surprised at your comments at the start of this reaction concerning Olivia (not Julia!). I love watching your reactions, always heartfelt and intelligent, and I find it terribly sad that you would be forced to worry about what you say because of adverse comments from people online. Come on guys, don't we watch these reactions to relive how we felt when first watching this amazing show? And do we really need to be so aggressive to reactors who feel differently to us? Stick to saying what you feel Domi, ignore those who cannot see shades of grey. Incidentally, I do feel Olivia was suddenly presented as a major love interest completely out of left field....very true to life, just not so good in drama.

Steve Quinn

I also wanted to say that one interesting aspect of this episode that can be overlooked is the presenting of the different ways the Scoobies and the Initiative deal with Apocalypse situation. Buffy and friends reading, researching and discussing the demons' motivation - quick cut to Riley, Forrest and the others talking pheromone signatures and covert tactics. Heart verses head.

Iarna

I have no time for the "it was the _90s_" excuse -- yeah, I was there too, it sucked. That said, this was not an issue with the show but the fandom. Y'all are projecting a loooot on to my pretty minimal "here's some context on why folks might be sensitive" comment. Your own explanations for why your feelings were fine, or why Domi's were, is all entirely missing the point.

Ron Fehr

My guess concerning Percy's conversation with his girlfriend (that Willow overheard) is that Percy didn't want to mess things up with her. Had he known that Willow was nearby, who knows what he would have said.

Veronika

This breaks my heart...I'm so sorry people were so rude and that you had to explain your opinions which you shouldn't have to...they are your opinions...this is why we're watching your reactions (or at least I do) to hear what you think. I freaking love your commentary on things because you're so smart and funny and I always enjoy what you got to say about an episode. Your last reaction was so precious and hilarious and I just hate that the comments made you feel this way. I just want to say that you're literally my most favorite reactor! Domi, you're the best!

Ron Fehr

You sure were overjoyed when you found out Spike could hurt demons. It sure gave him incentive to get back to being himself. Also his attempt at another accent was hilarious. He definitely had some great moments in this episode.

Ron Fehr

I don't think that Percy's girlfriend was evil, just a little jealous of Willow.

Ron Fehr

Ruffy is about the only name I could think of for the Riley/Buffy relationship. You immediately dismissed Biley, as did I.

Ron Fehr

You haven't seen much Joyce this season so far because Kristine Southerland took a little time off. I don't remember why.

Ron Fehr

Yes, the resolvement at the end seemed a bit quick, but I don't think that was as important of a focus as the Buffy/Riley story. To me, defeating the bad guys seemed like a subplot. The gang also seemed a bit cavalier about defeating it, like this was just a regular part of their lives (which in a way is true).

Rörd Hinrichsen

Based on when it originally aired and what Buffy's canonical date of birth is, this episode would take place very close to her 19th birthday.

KT

What's kind of hilarious is I've seen multiple reactors wonder if Tara was the bad guy in Hush for similar reasons to why you're suspicious of Olivia. They have no clue who Tara is, and focusing on her so much in the episode made it seem like maybe she was involved somehow. I think Liam Duke might have even thought that for a sec (since he's very protective of Willow) though I very well may be misremembering.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

"I have the world's shittiest memory." Proceeds to rhyme off episode titles as well someone like me who has seen the series front-to-back like 27 times.

The Suburban Big Man

Nothing wrong in having a friend with benefits, And I think Olivia and Giles thought of it as that. Nothing more, nothing less.

The Suburban Big Man

I do find it interesting that it seems like most reactors really like this episode when much of the fanbase thinks it's just ok. It is known for being written in a hurry by three writers and the production was also rushed,
