I knew Faith wanted Angel to kill her the moment she shot him with the gun for the 1st time. I'm always surprised when I see people taking till the end of the episode to realize it. Her self-loathing was CRYSTAL CLEAR since she beated herself up in "Who Are You?"!💔

You have no idea how fast I've clicked on this...I'm so excited to watch it! <3

Ayyyyyyyyyy. Gonna watch now!! R u making us wait til Friday for part 2 tho? 😭

One of my favorite things about this episode is the song playing in the bar as Faith fights/dances. Rob Zombie's "Living Dead Girl" perfectly sums up how Faith sees herself. She feels she IS a living dead girl.

Stupid job making me wait to watch. So looking forward to this one. Edit: Okay, finally got home and saw just past the opening credits where Domi's brain began to short circuit and smoke.🤣 Oh yes, this is going to be good. Now, back to the episode. Second Edit: Okay, finished it. Holy cow that was awesome. So glad you weren't spoiled by the title, because you were like a kid in the candy store after seeing Faith. So bubbly and happy. Then slowly, Faith took that away from you. Acting so chaotically, joining the lawyers, so quickly taking on the hit for Angle, her toying with Angel, elbowing Cordy, and then torturing Wes. And then that moment when you hear her ask Angel to kill her. Such a crazy episode, but finally Faith has found someone who sees the real her and cares for her. We get all of Angels tortured redemption story to underline that he sees exactly who Faith is and isn't giving up on her. [Domi - this next part is a pretty in depth analysis of Faith in this episode and the last Buffy episode she was in. I've come to the conclusions I make after rewatching these episodes a bunch of times. I don't think there are spoilers in it, as it doesn't deal with future episodes, but you may want to rewatch the episodes a few times to come to your own conclusions first before reading further. It's up to you.] Add to that, how crazy this episode is on replay. Others have alluded to her wanting to commit suicide by Angel, but after a few rewatchings, I've now come to the conclusion that it's further than that. When you go back to that last episode in Buffy, we can see her psyche already fracturing. Her impulses she has to fight, like stabbing Willow in the gut multiple times. The tortured past she can no longer bury, as we saw when Riley said he loved her. The glimpse of the life she lost when in Buffy's skin. Then, finally, her facing herself and hating herself so much she actually tries to kill herself. See, here she is trying to get Angel to kill her, but her suicide mission actually started with her final battle with Buffy in her body. She realized then just how much she hates what she has become. When she came to LA, she had no idea Angel was here. She went around causing as much chaos as she could, attracting as much attention as she could. She violently confronted the cops, even breaking one's jaw with his own handcuffs. She was trying to get the cops to hate her so much that they would kill her. Instead, Wolfram and Hart inform her Angel is in town and they want her to kill him. You can see the click in her eyes, how getting Angel to kill her would be so much better, so she jumps at the chance. She then does what she was doing to the cops to Angel. Trying to get him mad, trying to get him to hate her, trying to free the vampire in him so he will kill her. (Kind of like how Buffy punched him over and over until he turned so she could force him to drink from her). Such a cool episode. I just love Faith's character so much, even if she's done dirty many times over. My first time watching this episode, I thought at the end, finally. I kind of hated the dark path they sent her down in the 3rd season, because she already alluded to how bad her life was in her past. Finally, her character can start heading towards the light hopefully.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

This episode is such a masterclass in storytelling, foreshadowing, parallels etc. Living Dead Girl as the fight/dance music. "... one of you will surely end up dead." "That's what the lady wants." The gun, hoping Angel might actually just kill her then. "I'm a monster! I'm a monster!" "I'm bad! I'm evil!" I'm sure that's an incomplete list but just, *chef's kiss* Also I'm kinda annoyed with myself that I burned my impression of Domi joke on This Years Girl, would have worked very well here also lol Maybe it's kinda a good thing that all your predictions are so wildly wrong, not that anyone else's wouldn't be as well. Keeps the surprises as surprises😬😆

I love that the script asked for rain during that final scene, it wasn’t something production could do anything about, and it started raining as they were filming

Ron Fehr

I have the feeling, judging from the final scene, that Faith was tired of the direction her life was going and and just wanted Angel to end it. Fortunately Angel didn't see it the same way.

I LOOOOVVEEE this episode. Watching it now, I'm wondering if it's my actual favorite episode of the Buffyverse. Faith hates herself so much and my heart breaks for her. Random trivia on Phantom Dennis: Jane Espenson said in a commentary that when a writer creates a new character like Dennis, they get a small royalty for every episode that character "appears" in afterwards. She didn't get any from creating Dennis because the PTBs decided that he hadn't actually "appeared" in episodes like this one! lol

They do have rain machines that they can use for outdoor scenes. In this case they didn't have it in the budget, so they had to nix it, Then as you say it ended up raining for real while they shot the scene.

UTU49

Oh, yeah. THIS little episode. I forgot all about this one. ;)

I’m not a fan of Angel, but had to check out your reaction to this one. I’ve only just started to watch, but I hope you aren’t too disappointed that it is not Kate centric. 😎

I remember the final scene blowing my mind. I moved from liking Faith coming out of Buffy to "she has to die for torturing Wesley" to "omg, she tried to commit suicide by Angel the whole time". I just sat there for 10 min after the episode ended going "wow ... wow ... wow". For me this is one of the perfect episodes in the Buffyverse.

Talking about Giles and Angel after Jenny, I always found it interesting showing how Giles is trusting of Angel after that, after he had time, that Giles was the first person that Angel went to in Pangs, and that Giles and him just worked together so easily. I also like how friendly Wesley and Angel are and Wesley liking to work for Angel as his boss, after he was very against Angel on Buffy. It would be interesting to see how Giles would react to the way Wesley is now. He's changed so much.

My take on Faith in this episode and "the game" is different. I don't think she was making it like a game to justify killing Angel. I don't believe she ever had any intent in killing Angel. I think her intent was always to get Angel to kill her. The "game" and getting him into the game and needing him to up his game were about taunting and threatening and making him angry enough to kill her. Angel's not going to kill a person easily. She had to work him up.

This is a great episode. The photography in that final shot is amazing. This is the second time Faith bares her soul while fighting. First against Buffy in Faith's body "You're bad!" and now against Angel "I'm bad!" She is so broken. And it breaks my heart. FYI Miss Lawyer Lady is called Lilah.

zerofk

I agree, I always read this as "suicide by Angel".

Bri

It's so painful understanding how Faith feels in that final scene. Your reaction was as sensitive and compassionate as always, Domi.

UTU49

Lilah: Just remember that her name is like Dar-LA or Drusil-LA, but she LIES. So her name is LIE-LA. :/

The last scene seems to be a mirror of the final confrontation in "Who Are You?". In that episode, Faith is beating Buffy (in opposite bodies), but she is confronting herself by saying how she honestly perceives herself; that she is nothing and disgusting, a muderer. In this episode, Faith is beating Angel, attempting to goad him into killing her by telling him how she perceives herself as evil and bad, essentially unworthy of the compassion he ends up giving her at the end. The way they handle Faith hitting rock bottom after the events of the last Faith episode makes this one of my favorite episodes of either series.

FernWithy

Eliza's performance in this one should have gotten her an Emmy. It was so good, so intense. I mean, the episode was written and directed very well, but that performance just brought it to a higher level.

Molly Willis

Faith's vacant stare out the window after she drops the shard of glass is so much more painful when you know what she really wants. It's like she's taking one last look at the world before she goes, with a real "is that all there is?" look on her face.

Raven Dark

I can't add much more that hasn't already been said except this. I don't think Faith was listening to Wesley when she said, "What's that, love?" That attentiveness was phony. She was messing with him. Wesley threw that insult at her because he thought she was going to kill him anyway and he had nothing left to lose. I also think he may have been trying to get her to kill him faster as apposed to having her torture him first. Fabulous reaction, Domi. To such a great episode.

Ron Fehr

I somewhat agree with you, Raven. But I'm not 100% sure. Domi may be right. It all depends on the writer's intention when he or she wrote that line.

Ron Fehr

It didn't seem to me that Faith was concerned about how much her 'remuneration' was. Knowing it was Buffy's boyfriend was enough to get her to accept the offer. She probably only asked how much because she figured the lawyers would expect her to. Also, she wouldn't admit that she would have probably done the job for free. These are just my thoughts by the way. Feel free to disagree.

Pumpkin 3.14

I know most people have already mentioned that they don't think Domi really got the ending correctly. I think that she didn't really pick up on the end of the episode of Who Are You either. Faith hated herself and was trying to convince Angel to kill her, she wasn't trying to convince herself.

GaveUp

There is no correctly. There is just how people react and are impacted by it. Also realize this is a first viewing ... all the breadcrumbs laid along the way are not obvious on a first viewing for everyone.

Domi E

Yes….. I’m sorry 😭😭

Domi E

Oh damn, gonna have to go listen to the song now!

Domi E

Haha thank you! It really is a brilliant episode!

Domi E

I love that so much!

Domi E

Omg thats hilarious, hahaha

Domi E

You know Darrell, I think I’ll forgive them for this one 😜

Domi E

Agreed!! It really is mind blowing!

Domi E

Oh damn, that does make a lot more sense!! I totally see that!!

Domi E

📝📝📝Ok I got this

Domi E

This is so sad 😭Gonna have to pay attention when I edit this episode

Domi E

Oh yeah that also makes perfect sense given her okay of actually wanting to be killed, thanks for pointing it out Raven!

I feel like there are parallels with Giles' 'perform the ritual in a tutu' line. It was somewhat a Ripper bravado line but for me it's always felt like he was trying to get Angelus to kill him before he told him how to open Acathla. The world was on the line so it was his only way out. However, Wesley should really have played for time. He should have had faith that Angel would find him, he's good at that sort of thing. But I totally understand that he wasn't thinking logically at that time :/

Keenan White

Seeing Faith break down like that at the end of the episode really pulled at my heart strings, Eliza’s performance was top notch in my personal opinion.

Ray D

This ending is one of the most powerful scenes in the buffyverse. The rain, the acting, faith acting tough and first and then breaking down, asking him to kill her. Just amazing. It hits me in the feels every time. I like the flashbacks with the moments when Angel went from evil to having a soul again and how they echo Faith’s journey from being evil to at the end hopefully getting her soul back (more metaphorically in faiths case). It’s very well done.

Hosman

I always wondered how Angel even got into that apartment to save Wesley without being invited in by the owner. It belonged to the guy that Faith beat up at the bus station. In the next episode the police say he gave them a description of Faith, so I assume he was still alive. Oh well.
