In case you can't tell, I think I was a little bit thrown back about this episode's placement haha. But, as Adele would say, I guess.. This is the end.

Thankfully, the confusion that starts this episode most definetly gets solved in the next one.... Right? ;)

You say that it all seemed too easy. And yet the whole gang turns on one another. (Like I heard someone say that the defeat of the Master in Prophecy Girl seemed too easy. Buffy died!) Making the actual plot resolution easy isn’t a flaw if it takes a toll on the character’s life. The latter is why we watch it, else we’d be watching a lesser show. Nothing rushed about it. Our four main protagonists magically became one after their Beatles-style breakup, over two episodes – and really extending through the whole season – giving us a window into how things will be settled more often in the latter seasons of the show. The stress of their arguments were part of the hoops they had to jump through to defeat Adam. That was the point of it. To draw out the action part of the defeat would have lessened that. Adam decoded the files. He said that he did it to get the Slayer there. It was all timed accordingly, and the dialogue revealed that timing, step by step. We aren’t supposed to think Willow was necessarily close to decoding it. That was a pretense, her pride, revealed comedically.

Think of the word 'evil' when you think of the title. It helps to pronounce the word correctly. Prime+evil= Primeval. I know it's wierd, but that's how I remember how to pronounce it.

Steve Quast

Yeah, this episode's placement is a bit confusing, but don't worry. The next episode isn't confusing at all. Everyone else understands what it's about right away.

Ailish

Next episode is going to be great. And I'm so pumped you're almost to season 5, it's definitely my favorite!!

Steve Quast

You were right about the chip. It would seem that your prediction skills are improving. Impressive....most impressive.

Ron Fehr

I was thinking the same thing.

Loves Bitca

"I think that I'll get a better idea what the actual finale finale will be about after watching this one" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Brendan O'Connor

Knowing you’ve seen the next episode, you probably thought the ending of this episode was pretty…cheesy

Ron Fehr

That's right, Domi. And just to let you know, your friend Alley was just as confused.

Ron Fehr

In a way, I find a little hard to feel sorry for Forrest. He started becoming unlikable once he began badmouthing Buffy.

Steven

I like that it was (Superstar) Jonathan who discovered what and where Adam's power source was.

Loves Bitca

The program was programmed to uncode itself at a certain time, as Willow discovered, because Adam wanted Buffy there for the completion of his plan. From Adam's side, he wasn't going to take a chance the Willow might not solve it, as he needed Buffy there to even out the casualties. From the writer's side they were showing that getting Buffy there was actually part of his plan.

Loves Bitca

While Willow and Buffy WERE roommates, they really aren't so much by this point even beyond how much they were both gone before. While she and Buffy are technically roommates in the dorm, Willow seems to have pretty much moved in with Tara now.

zerofk

In the intro you said you would get a better idea about the next episode after this episode. How'd that work out for you? :-P I love the final fight between Buffy and Adam. I know a lot of people don't think he's a good villain, but that fight is _epic_! I loved your insights into Xander during the outro! You're right, he does channel his sadness into anger. Even as far back as episode 2 of season 1 when he kicked a waste bucket and said "I don't like vampires" after they killed his friend Jesse.

Richard Ashton

Strangely enough, whenever I see the word 'Primeval' I hear 'Hannah Spearritt'.

CeNedra

"I thought this episode was a dream sequence"... me "😂😂😂😂"

UTU49

'Hannah Spearritt'. That's a weird joke that I don't get... and I want to get it.

UTU49

Hey Domi! Your reaction to the Gang defeating Adam in this episode was very similar to the reaction of EVERY OTHER REACTOR. It's almost like you guys somehow managed to forget that the Buffyverse is UNconventional... with a capital "UN". One of the many great things about the Buffyverse is that Seasons 1 - 4 are COMPLETELY different from each other. As for what happens in Seasons 5 - 7... I honestly don't remember. (This lie amuses me quite a bit.) :P I hope you enjoy the next episode... and the 66 episodes after that. :)

UTU49

Domi: "Is this episode a dream?" Me: "No."

Khanach

That was great! The best thing about you looking for patterns in everything is that when they're not real, they provide us with this amazing WTF moments XD Expecting to see some more of those pretty soon :p

Cheryl Coffin

I think if you look up the dictionary meaning of the word Primeval you’ll find it exactly describes Buffy when the spell was cast. Very much aligns with the point you were making when you described it.

Raven Dark

Steve, you stinker. LOL

Raven Dark

Yeah, Domi asked if this episode was a dream sequence... Oh, the irony.

madfem

i have the same earrings yieeaah ♀️♀️

Steve Quast

"I think maybe watching episode 22 is going to make things more clear in my head." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Steve Quast

Let's face it, though. Adam really is just a glorified season 1 monster-of-the-week character.

Ron Fehr

True. Although we saw two or three examples of how bad he could be, we never really saw him fight much, until he fought Buffy.

Ron Fehr

I'm not sure how it was done, but when you hear Buffy speaking in her 'primeval' voice, you can hear the others' voices blended in.

2026-09-06 19:00 I know a lot of fans doesn't like Adam as "the big bad" of the season, I personally think he is okay, but one thing I like about the arc with him is how the last fight is in a way a science vs magic kind of arc/fight and I think that's kind of cool. I have also heard theories about the real "big bad" of season 4 being the changes that jeopardizes their friendships rather than it being Adam, and personally I love that theory and it actually puts season 4 up on the list as my second favorite season all together as it's such a different and creative way of creating a "big bad". We got this invisible force that slowly tear us apart without noticing, it's so relatable and close to real life. Luckily in the end our Scoobies did notice and the spell and fight against Adam becomes a beautiful metaphor. The season started with Buffy trying to figure everything out alone and ends with the core becoming one again, a full circle of a season in my opinion.

This set up, with this not being the finale, though it seems pretty final of the season, and how it's set up confuses everyone. So I hope you know we are not laughing at your confusion so much as a "Welcome to the party", because we've all been there.

It's the way things go. People always grow a bit apart in college, as life changes. Willow experienced the other side of it when Buffy was early in her "Spanking new relationship" with Riley, how new couples spend so much time together at the expense of time with their other friends. But they all reconciled in the elevator shaft, and with that bonding spell, I think we can assume that they will all have a healthier mixture of time with the others and time with their significant others. At least Tara and Riley are more part of the group now, so it's not as much spending time alone with them, as spending time together with the group with them.

Loves Bitca

True, and I realized later on rewatches of the season that this season was more about the journey and the fracturing relationship between the main characters than the big bad/Adam. Though I can also nitpick and see so many ways they could have explored Adam better.

Bud Haven

Yes, the beginning of the great confusion 😂😂

Henrik Holst

What is really really cool is that every single spell used at the end is in real Sumerian. "Sha me-en-den." - " We are heart." "Gesh-toog me-en-den." - "We are mind." "Zee me-en-den." - " We are spirit." "Oo-khush-ta me-ool-lee-a ba-ab-tum-mu-de-en" - " From the raging storm, we bring the power of the Primeval One. " (Enjoining spell to create ComboBuffy) "Im-a sheng-ab". - "Boil the air" (the wall ComboBuffy created as a force field). “Kur. ” - "change" (ComboBuffy transformes the missile into 3 doves).

Just enjoy the journey and don't worry too much. As for things becoming more clear? We'll have to wait and see. A lot of fans like to dump on season 4, but it was a season of major turmoil in the show. We all have to remember Dr. Walsh's and Oz's premature departures from the show and how it affected things. Mutant Enemy is great at planning far ahead. Take for example Willow's becoming gay. Joss had said that from the beginning of the show, he knew that either Xander or Willow would end up finding out they were gay along the way. We can see Willow was decided upon way back in season 3 when in Dopplegangland Vampire Willow showed WIllow's true nature. So, we know that the show had plans set long in advance how this season was supposed to go. Then the early departures upset those plans and they had to scramble to recover the season. Add to that Doyle's early departure from Angel and the havoc that wreaked over there would still have affected the production team as some of them were involved in both shows. So yes, the season could have been better, but considering all that happened to wreck the season, I think it was really well done. Now, also, we get introduced to an added element of complexity they added to the show. The fact that the Big Bad really isn't the big bad anymore. Well, at least not the only one. Obviously Adam is the distinct big bad for this season, the fact that he's finished now, we know he isn't the only one. As mentioned before, the team is kind of its own worst enemy. Their dynamic and how well they function through the turmoils life throws at them can have a greater effect on their ability to save the world than the big bad. Add to that, each of them is also personally their own worst enemies too. Take for example Xander and his fears of being useless. All these threats are playing on separate layers at all times and intertwine at times, like how Spike used their personal issues to cause team division. Also in how they fix the team, which quiets many of their personal fears, which all combines to helping them to battle the big bad. If you go back in season 3, you can find these elements there, but I think this season really made it a more ongoing thing through the season. So, basically, the show is becoming more complex than just some big bad to defeat. It's really how life's issues are the real big bad, and so the monster needing defeating really is kind of diminished in comparison. Anyways, don't worry about being confused. We all were the first time through. Can't wait to see your face next episode. No spoilers, but it is going to be great to watch.

Yeah, i used to kind of poo poo on S4, when I looked back on it afterwards, while realizing now that I enjoyed the episodes at the time. I think we tend to look back at the season as the story of the big bad. But looking at it now it's more about the characters and the journey, and for that it's done very well. I was just looking at it from the wrong perspective before.
