To say I'm excited for Season 2 after that ending would truly be an understatement... TOOK 400 DAYS BUT SHE'S BACK AND I AM SOOOO READDDYYY FOR THIS!!!!

Happy New Year Domi. 🎉

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Lets fucking go! I love this episode so much, it really is the payoff for all the world building of season one. Another example of one of things these writers do so well and that's jamming so much into the last episode or two of a season but in a way that still makes sense. Not only does it make for consistent banger season finales but it frees up the bulk of the episodes to have character growth, MotW's, all that other good stuff. I can't wait to see your reaction to it, gonna fire it right now 👍 Cheers, Happy New Year all!

So excited for this. And before I even watch I just want to say....I think it's fair to say that we've all been waiting for this episode (especially the ending) ever since we watched your reaction to Angel killing Darla in the seventh episode of Buffy.

Khanach

Happy New Year, everyone! May we all Shanshu in 2022 :p

Ron Fehr

The title of this episode was a little bit of a joke (not exactly the word I was looking for, but I couldn't think of anything else). Although I never saw it, there was a movie titled To Live And Die In L.A.

Like all the surprises you've had this season, your reaction to seeing Darla was priceless. As dark as the episode was, at least it ended on a high note for you.

Antonio

Angel getting to become human again is his reward, and your reaction to Darla returning was our reward!

Steve Quast

I love the fact that, even though you've been waiting for Darla to come back forever, you were still surprised when she reappeared at this moment.

Richard Ashton

I don't think anyone's said this but Oh My God!

Richard Ashton

Thinking of Kate and Wesley getting together (KaSey) and the fallout when Darla sires Wesley and a pregnant Kate goes on the rampage.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I suspect one of the big things we're probably supposed to take away from Lindsey's actions is his relationship with power. He speaks about his experiences growing up being, as he perceives, being stepped on, and then again meetings power in the last scene with Angel ("You're either the one with the power, or you're powerless"). And so he stays with W&H in order to be the one in power since to him it's a binary choice. You're either one getting screwed or the one doing the screwing, there's no middle ground. I would venture that's also how Holland knew he would stay in Blind Date, since he'd done his research on Lindsey's background before selecting to work at the firm.

FINALE TIMEEE! This might be my most favorite reaction of yours <3 I mean 400 days is a very long time but she's finally here! I was honestly so scared when your camera stopped working because I did not want for you to go through that whole process again...I'm glad everything worked out in the end. :) Anyway, Happy New Year, Domi! Thank you so much for everything <3 I can't wait for seasons 5/2!

Random tidbit from my experience of Angel the Series. --> I didn't watch all of Angel until well after I had already finished Buffy. This meant that I was aware of the title "To Shanshu in LA" for YEARS, before I actually saw it. I thought "Shanshu" was a PERSON. So I thought maybe "To Shanshu in LA" was the start of a letter that someone had written to this Shanshu person... or perhaps it was an address label on a package. I was pretty surprised to find that I had not even gotten the right part of speech when perceiving the word "shanshu". Well... I have to go and "shanshu" now... so I'll talk to you all later.

Dream Cruzer

Fun fact about Kate : She made Maxim magazine's "Hot 100" list in 2002, voted one of the most watchable women in entertainment.

I love that both the series one pilot and finale episode titles are puns on famous LA movies -City Of... (Angels) (I know it's also just the nickname for LA, but it was a pretty famous movie that was just coming out around when they filmed the ep) and -To Shanshu (live and die) in LA. This one especially is such a perfect pun since it encapsulates the big twist without giving it away (unless you're much cleverer than I)

UTU49

Is "word play" maybe a concept that you would like to use for this situation?

Ron Fehr

Thank you UTU49. That's probably what I was thinking of, and I just couldn't remember the term.

Ron Fehr

For 416 days. Finally the wait is over.

Ron Fehr

I don't know if you've started season two yet, but if you haven't, do you have any hunches why they brought Darla back? (Consider this a question for your season one Q&A)

So far as the prophecy of Angel eventually becoming human, some have wondered about it in relation to "I will Remember You" as he chose not to be human, because he needed to keep up the fight, and here he seems happy with the idea of becoming human. So what changed? I think it's the fact that Wes said "It's his reward" after many battles and a few apocalypses. Before it was an accident. If it's his reward, then he earned it, and that means that he's redeemed himself. Before he couldn't leave the battle because he's still working on redemption.

so it turns out, the thing that ties Angel to the world is his found family, Cordy and Wes, cuz the moment they're in danger, Angel puts himself entirely in the game to save them; he tells Kate to go to hell cuz he doesnt have the luxury to be passive anymore; he takes charge. i dont know if you noticed that ☺

Yes, it was so worth the wait. You had been predicting and focusing on Darla's return for so long while we all had to sit back patiently (okay, we were snickering at your impatience). I think at some point you finally just gave up on Darla's return and Boom. The surprise was awesome. Even knowing she was coming back, you were still caught totally off guard by it. I'm mostly not enjoying the misery you lived through to get back Darla, just mostly happy that it was still able to surprise you so well. Also, I just have to say, our poor team. it's such a shock to see the powers of the visions being used as a weapon against Cordy. I mean, at first we just think they are normal, but every time we see her afterwards, her deterioration seems to be getting exponentially worse. It's just so hard to see her there so beaten down. Plus, what the hell, the office is blown up with Wes inside. Honesty, with how the Buffyverse has treated us, I was seriously surprised both of them survived the episode my first time through. I really don't like all the pain Cordy went through, but it seems like her experience is one that has had life altering effects on her. Cordy at the end there seemed like a new person. I still love that part where she hands Angel the glass of blood and tells him there's no shame in drinking it in front of family. So much more I could say about this one, but I will leave it at, I really loved your reaction. So good. Looking forward to the next seasons, where I think the drama really begins.

madfem

interesting how you took the whole Cordy growth thing this ep. i personally loved it, it made so much sense. we'll see if she changes drastically or not.😉

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

To me the appearance of David Nabbit does things 1) leaves the possibility open for him to show up if the writer's decide to use him again, 2) sets us up for the scene switch using the "have you seen any cool monsters" gag, 3) reinforces the saving people for its own sake theme which, aside from being a basic core concept of the show, ends up being particularly relevant in this episode, 4) it's for funsies lol It has that deadpan, campy, self awareness that is a hallmark of these writers and this show in particular, and sometimes you just need a little silliness to fill a few extra minutes of airtime. If anyone is familiar with the "I'm a lion" gag from Firefly it's not dissimilar. Instead of an honest misunderstanding of speech its an honest misunderstanding of their relationship by David that ends up being resolved by everyone just kinda shrugging their shoulders and going back to the crisis at hand. For those of that enjoy that kind of humour it's fun and chuckle-worthy, for a lot of others I suspect the whole scene just falls a little flat and I get that.
