What’s the ship name for Buffy and the cheeseman? I forgot.

Meredith

This comment made me laugh harder than it should. Chuffy????

I had to skip to the end immediately. :) Edit: you're spot on with Graham being pronounced like gram.

Richard Ashton

Graham, also spelled Graeme, is pronounced "Grey'm". Well, over here it is.

I was excited to see this reaction! Obviously, the most important and shocking thing about this episode is Spike having a sex dream about Buffy. It's very well done in that it's filmed like an actual scene so it looks completely real (Buffy wearing the same outfit that she had in the prior scene, for instance). But I was surprised that you didn't touch on Buffy's own shocking and extraordinary line - "Do you think I've spent the last 8 months with you because you've got super powers? If that's what I wanted, I'd be dating Spike!" This is such a wild thing for Buffy to say and it deserves a lot of discussion. It's such a very specific reference to someone that is her mortal enemy and that she despises and also that she knows that Riley hates Spike. Why would Buffy ever even mention Spike as an example here unless it's crossed her mind before? Angel would have been a much more obvious reference especially since he was referenced several times in the episode. I also want to add that this isn't the first interesting thing Buffy's subconsciously said about Spike. Remember in Lover's Walk, she told Angel that: "I can fool Giles. I can fool my friends, but I can't fool myself. Or Spike, for some reason." She admitted (to Angel, no less) that Spike - evil, soulless, Spike! - subconsciously knew her better than anyone else. And of course, it was Spike, of all people, who was with her the day that Buffy came out to her mom about being a Slayer. So, it'll be very interesting to see where they take this idea of Buffy and Spike because as you mention, they have such an incredible dynamic and amazing chemistry in scenes together and they've spent years building this up.

m.,

A LOT of good points here.

Domi: "Superstar, It's got to be about Cordy" "Out of my mind, It makes me think of Cordy" She's Domi. Linoleum makes her think of Cordy.

It looks like Spike fried the chip in Domi's brain, lol. Such a great reactor moment when we get mislead so thoroughly just to then get slammed square in the face with the fact that Spike realized he is so tormented by Buffy because he's fallen in love with her. Well, as much as a soulless vampire can at least. Also. It's amazing how much Buffy and Riley go through in this episode and yet we feel like their relationship hasn't really changed. We had questions to begin with and just as many to end with. These two aren't looking as hot as they should. Plus too, the ongoing mystery of Dawn with addition of the mysterious health scare for Joyce. I loved how you picked up on Dawn's genuine fear for her mother's life. Would a nefarious interloper doing a superstar type of spell act like that? Me thinks not. But then what? So much fun.

Ron Fehr

Hi Domi. I just want to say that you got another prediction right, but for spoilers sake, I won't tell you which one.

Jordan Haddow

I disagree a little. I think Domi caught that point, because it looked to me like she reacted, although slightly. I think she was trying to keep it in so she could hear the whole discussion. One of the problems with reacting is that while talking to the camera, you tend to miss what you're talking over. I do agree with you about Spike's innate ability to see into Buffy's soul, so to say. I'll even add one to yours. How about when Parker tossed Buffy aside. Spike just happened to walk in at the end of it, yet he was able to see every little detail of Buffy's broken heart and try to use it against her. She couldn't even hide that from him. Doesn't do much for building their relationship, but shows a connection between them. Add to that, a little theory I've always had about Buffy. I think she has a belief that isn't mentioned much, but is present in a number of episodes. I think she believes that for her to feel a real connection with someone, they need to see into her, know her without words. When she was in Faith's body, she got so frustrated with Giles because he couldn't just look into her eyes and see it was her. Later, she felt so betrayed by Riley because he couldn't look into her body's eyes and see it wasn't her when Faith slept with him. This is later emphasized in Superstar when Jonathan states plainly that that is the reason she is mad at Riley. Not that he slept with her, but because he didn't know it wasn't Buffy he slept with, her soul. In a way, it could be said that she kind of brings it up in this episode. She makes the claim that she trusts Riley more than anybody before, she's told him more than anybody before. The thing though, is that, in her mind, a good thing? Go back and watch the episodes where her and Angel on close and how many times was Angel able just understand what she was thinking? How many times did he know things about her she didn't tell him? Lots. I like Riley and I know Buffy is trying very hard to smooth out their relationship. Even on my first run through though, it always seemed like she was always trying very hard to fit a square peg in a round hole. My thoughts on the matter at least.

Graham's name, while I never thought about it before, is a little tricky to pronounce. To me, it seems like it should be pronounced Gray-am, but pronounced rapidly if possible. I suppose English not being one's first language would make it tricky to say.

Ron Fehr

I believe it was Shan from After Show Reacts that had a theory that Spikes attracion with Buffy began from the first time he saw her. He was pacing around in The Bronze watching her in a normal setting. Later he made sure she could overhear him talking about someone outside trying to bite someone else. Obviously that was so he could see her fighting style.

Martin Waits

I was born and raised in the US and English still doesn't make sense sometimes. :P It's a horribly complicated and inconsistent language. I am always impressed that people for whom it is a second language communicate as well as they do, since I'm awful at something as relatively simple as French.

Martin Waits

Not really disagreeing with either of you about Spike's ability to pick up on Buffy's feelings, but I'll just say that he is gifted at doing that with everyone. He saw that Willow was still hurting in Something Blue when Buffy and Giles thought she was doing ok, and his ability to pick on the emotions and inner dynamics of others is what made him so good at messing with everyone in S4 (like The Yoko Factor).

Bud Haven

Three big ouch moments for Riley this episode. First was when they were in the training room and Riley asked Buffy if she wanted to spare, she just gave him a look and walked away. Another was when Buffy asked Riley if it was OK for her to leave to check on her mother, he said yes but you could see that he wanted her to stay. And the biggest perhaps was when Rioley said, "Loving you is the hardest thing I've ever done" Buffy replies, "I don't know why." But once again not saying I love you too. But I think your right, she does love him, but expresses it more phyically rather than verbally. Which makes sense for a Slayer.

Ron Fehr

She needs to say it verbally to reassure Riley. My belief is that she said it once to Angel, and when that didn't work out, she was just afraid to say the words to anyone else, for fear of the same thing.

Ron Fehr

When doesn't she think of Cordy? Lol🙂

zerofk

I very much disagree. Angel would not be a good example because she _does_ (still) want to date him. And who else with superpowers is there in her life? Nobody, unless she would've said "I'd be dating some random demon" which certainly doesn't sound as good. As for Buffy subconsciously saying interesting things about Spike - here too there is no reason to think she is in any way attracted to him or even thinking about him more than she'd think about anyone else. As Martin said, Spike is very perceptive of _everyone_, and Buffy knows that. The whole gang knows it, because they've all been the target of his painful insights.

zerofk

I agree that Spike is using Harmony, and is not good for her. But I also think that Harmony is using Spike. It's too a much lesser extend, but it's there. She knows how to use her beauty - and abuse his lust - to get what she wants. That said, it's still a mostly one-sided relationship. Almost like an evil version of Buffy and Riley... Speaking of Riley, I don't like him in this episode. The way he acts feels very "alpha male" - like he *has to* be the strong one in the relationship. And I don't just mean this about refusing to see a doctor; that's just a tiny part of it. It's his whole demeanor towards Buffy.

UTU49

Your reaction to the ending: "WHAT. THE. FUCK?!" 100% reasonable response. A couple of reactors just about fell out of their chairs. The fact that it was a dream was 10 times as interesting to me, because now Spike has this shameful secret.

UTU49

It's one of those names that has multiple common pronunciations. There were a couple Grahams around my neighborhood when I was a kid and everyone around here (Canada) pronounced it "GRAY-um." The "u" should really by a schwa, I guess. Actually one of my favorite bosses was named Graham too. Great guy. Practical and super easygoing.

Bud Haven

Buffy can’t see it though. She feels showing her love should be enough. “I don’t know why”

Loves Bitca

Actually, James Marsters described that he played that scene of stalking her in the Bronze as a sexual attraction. Not in the script that way, and just actors motivation, and also not the same as whatever he's feeling now with his saying he loved her in his dream.

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

tbh I'm from the UK and when I arrived in the US I had NO idea that Graham Crackers were spelled 'Graham' because in the UK we pronounce the name Grey-um. I then saw the 'Graham Crackers' box and put two and two together. So, yes we drop the h but at least it's two syllables.

Veronika

I was expecting utter shock at the end of the episode, but my god...your reaction was totally priceless :D I have to say, I did not feel sorry for Riley because I hated his 'alpha male' (as zerofk has put it) behavior towards Buffy this episode...I understand he thinks that Buffy does not love him because she has not explicitly said it but man...she had shown it to him by the way she was scared for him and made him go to see the doctor. This is probably the reason why I could never personally ship the two of them together.

indaeo

Yeah, when Domi said that she thought that Spike's feelings would be more gradual, I immediately thought - they *have* been gradual, since 203. lol
