I thought you might like this one for some reason :)

Domi E

Hmmmm, I do wonder why!

Martin Waits

I've been anticipating your reaction to this since Hush. :)

Ron Fehr

I don't know if you remember Sandy, the girl Riley met at Willy's Place. Sandy was the girl that vampire Willow took a bite of in Dopplegangland (I think that was the episode name). I guess at some point she was allowed to drink vampire Willow's blood.

I noticed something almost right away. As soon as Tara's family arrived, her stutter came back. This supports my theory, that whenever she feels threatened or intimidated, she has a little trouble getting her words out.

zerofk

That scene at the start with everyone helping Buffy move is so cute. Such a great group dynamic. Then Tara's family shows up and immediately her stutter is back. Until the gang stands up for her and it disappears again... (Edit: I just noticed Ron also mentioned this; sorry for the repeat.)

I think this episode was just for you after enduring all the confusion since Restless. I was so looking forward to your reaction since you were starting to miss Tara. On the other hand, poor Red Dress Lady. Finding out that you had a run in with a slayer is so ... I mean, if her friends knew ... But I like how you paid attention the moment she demands it "because she is great and beautiful". Correct reaction :) And hello again, Sandy. I miss your sire Vampire-Willow.

Dan

A couple of thoughts now I've watched the reaction... There are a few clues that it's a metaphor for gay teenagers with unsupportive families - such as Tara not introducing Willow as her gf, and the Beth's "God knows what kind of lifestyle" line. We love some bad predictions. We're not laughing at you, we're just laughing towards you. I love Xander's glee at the prospect of beating up Tara's brother. It would make a change from trying to help fight demons/etc that he can't take on himself/alone.

Maria

Loved the reaction! Buffy’s ”we’re family” always makes me tear up ❤️ When is Fool for Love up? That one is definitely in my top 5 Buffy episodes, so I’m way too excited for it!

This episode continues the "witchcraft" metaphor for homosexuality. Notable scenes are - Buffy and Xander worrying about not fitting in if there were a lot of "wiccans" at Tara's birthday party. Also Xander saying "Well her and Willow are all wiccy". Buffy "Which is cool" Xander "Yeah!". They are reassuring each other that it is okay that their friends are gay and not to make a big deal about it. - Tara's father in her room talking about how Tara "doesn't even try to hide it any more" and that he had hoped if he let her go to college she would "get over the whole witchcraft thing". And like you mentioned, the unfortunate fact of her family abandoning her when they find out what she is. That one is on the nose.

Ron Fehr

I noticed it disappeared at the end too.

Khanach

Even discounting spoilers, I could say many things about this episode, but I'll settle with the fact that apparently you didn't noticed that Buffy didn't see Spike helping her, because he's a technically a demon, and therefore invisible to the gang until Tara broke her spell. So much for being helpful! Fantastic reaction, by the way. I guess we all knew you'll love this one, for whatever reason!

Ron Fehr

I liked Red Dress Lady's comment. Most people would say something like "if my friends found out, I would be so embarrassed." But she started out her comment with "if I had friends, and they found out...". So I guess she doesn't have any friends.

Ron Fehr

While I agree with your comments about witchcraft being a metaphor for homosexuality, I think these particular comments could also just be taken literally. What I mean is that they could be taken either way in this case.

Raven Dark

Yay!!! *Rubs hands* I can't wait to see this one! Watching now...

UTU49

Yay! (Sorry. I know this isn't the best comment, but I just had to say it.) ^_^

Hi Domi, what a great reaction! You are such a great reactor - I love how emotionally invested you are in these characters! You mentioned about the 'found family' theme being a reference to what gay teengage kids can go through. This is definitely one of the big metaphors of the episode. Tara's family not accepting her 'magic lifestyle' is a metaphor for them not accepting her sexuality. Tara's family tell her that her 'magic' - i.e. her sexuality - is evil. Tara says it doesn't feel evil - i.e. her love for Willow. So the revelation for Tara that her family were lying to her and her 'magic' does not come from an evil place is a metaphor for her realising there is nothing wrong with her sexuality. It's really very beautiful. There is also the broader theme of patriarchal control of women – telling them they're evil – which has connections to some religious thought etc. The writers had to really push to get the network to allow them to show a scene of Willow and Tara in bed together. I believe this was the first time a scene like that had been shown on television! One of the themes of this episode is that family goes beyond blood – this is clever because it is also highly relevant to what Buffy is going through with Dawn. Another thing about this episode is that the story of the kitten that Tara tells to Willow at the beginning is the story of the episode - Tara is the 'kitten' who finds a home!

This is probably one of my favorite episodes of the series. All those little hints about what Tara is, why she has the odd little ticks, the big one with her sabotaging the spell directing everyone in one direction when the truth of the matter is, no matter how evil a demon is, they don't compare to the evil man is capable of. Spike's semi heroic act at the end to prove what Tara really is was perfect. Now we just need a bit or alot of Tillow every episode going forward to make up for the last few episodes and first three seasons without it.

Bud Haven

I liked how Tara's real family all stuck up for her. Even Spike was there. He even helped, by punching Tara. lol Everyone stuck up for her. Except Riley, who was out drinking with vampires.

Jordan Haddow

I love Tara so much and she deserved this episode so much. After a while after watching it, I realized that it made Tara out to be even better than I thought the first few times watching it. She was raised with the worldview that she was part demon and was eventually going to end up turning evil when her demon side comes to the surface at the end of her teens. She somehow managed to work up the nerve to leave and try and live a good life as much as she could before the change. Then she meets Willow. We all know that Tara has loved Willow since early one, but this episode lets us see that her love was so much stronger than we ever thought. Just imagine the moment she learned that Willow's best friend in the whole world is the slayer, the one person whose purpose in life is to slay evil demons. Knowing what she knew, she should have left Willow and run for the hills. Instead, she clung to Willow despite the fact that she fully believed that her demon side would emerge, she would turn evil, and Buffy would slay her. She chose to face Buffy and her imminent death rather than give up a moment with Willow. Keep in mind too that Willow hadn't even fully returned her feelings by the time she learned who Buffy was. Got to love Tara. I really enjoyed this reaction. I just knew you would love it, but it was still so much fun seeing how tense you got when you thought she may end up leaving. Not so much out of cruel enjoyment over your angst, but more because I just knew the ending would be just that much better to you.

Jordan Haddow

Ya, I love that detail in the show. When you rewatch season 4, you can see it being used a lot. It gives a good indicator of how comfortable she is with each character, because she will stutter for some and not others. For instance, when she first met Buffy, which was actually Faith, she stuttered and Faith ended up making fun of her about it.

Ron Fehr

This episode always reminds me of a season four episode, in which Williw sought Tara's help in locating demons. As we know, Tara intentionally botch the spell by not blowing her dust onto the makeshift map. Now we know why, because she thought she was part demon and didn't want it known.

Ron Fehr

Hey Domi! I was expecting you to grab your flag at some point during your reaction. You know the flag I'm talking about.

Ryan Martinez

It's crazy to think now in 2022 that a lesbian kiss would be so taboo over 20 years ago. But that was network television at the time. Just implying it as this show did was so beyond it's time.

Ron Fehr

I just want to say something unrelated to your reaction. I don't know if you've ever heard of Popcorn In Bed. The creator, Cassie, watches movies for the first time, and sometimes has her sister watch along with her. Your little back-and-forth talks with your sister had me thinking that maybe some time you should do something similar.

UTU49

Domi, do your sisters know the show? Have they just absorbed some from you or have they watched some?

m.,

Next episode is gonna be a doozy.. you could make a pretty convincing argument it's top #3 material

x_Rhi_x

definitely in my top 3 for sure

Ron Fehr

I just wonder what Domi would have done had Buffy not defended her. For a second it looked like that was going to happen, and I could see the look of disappointment on Domi's face.

Veronika

I had a feeling you would enjoy this one! 😏 Our sweet, sweet Tara! She's officially part of our gang, the family. I don't know what it is but when I was rewatching this episode with you I saw some Cordelia references throughout this episode that I had never noticed before (maybe I was trying to watch it through your Cordy-focused lenses :D). This is I think the first episode since Pangs where Cordelia is mentioned on Buffy since she left. And then the scene in which Buffy is trying to fight the 'invisible' demons and she tells the guys to shut up with the camera on her as she's trying to focus is reminding me so much of the scene in Out of mind, out of sight.

Ron Fehr

I had the same thought about the scene in Out of Mind, Out of Sight.

Ron Fehr

Domi, I just noticed something about your thumbnail on this post. It looks like you're praying, saying thanks for this episode and thanks for bringing Tara back.

Antonio

It's defo in my Top 3 Episode 7s.

Loves Bitca

Been waiting for you to get here since Hush.

Loves Bitca

Just a minor thing. Buffy moving back home was primarily because she learned about Dawn and Glory trying to find her as the key. To be nearer Dawn to protect her. Looking after Joyce was somewhat of a cover story.

Loves Bitca

Remember though that the reason you originally came up with the idea that Thespia was Tara's mom, was your reason for why Tara would not want to use that spell. But we now know she didn't want to cast that demon finding spell because she thought it would reveal her.

Loves Bitca

You mentioning that Tara and Dawn look a lot alike, like they could be related. I always noticed some kind of resemblance. I think the eyes and facial features, cheekbones. Recently someone posted a current picture of Michele Trachtenberg (Dawn) on a Buffy facebook page and someone said they thought it was Amber Benson (Tara). So you're not alone. I also find it interesting that Tara calls Dawn, in her found family "Dawnie" and her real brother is named Donnie, verbally pronounced the same.

Nick Velasquez

This episode always makes me wonder about Hank Summers. We see in season one he has visits with Buffy. In season two she spent the summer with him. In season 3 they had plans but work got in the way. In season 4 she wishes he was around more, but when she sees angel in “I will remember you” she mentions she’s visiting her dad. But now I’m season 5 he ran off with a secretary and bailed on Buffy and Dawn. It always makes me wonder if he did that since season 4 or if the Monks changed Buffy’s memory.

madfem

it was about found family for sure. also if you rewatch the scene where cousin Beth finds out that the women in the family aren't actually demons, you can see her beginning to understand all the gaslighting and abuse that was done to her, so I wouldn't say she's a bad person, just far more brainwashed than Tara. :(
