After all the depression these last few episodes of Buffy gave me, I'm so thankful for the serotonin from this one because that ending... OH MY GOD!

Great reaction. Loren does not know everything about what’s going to happen, in terms of his leads and mystical intuitions. He knew that Angel wanted a chance to give Darla a second chance at life and he knew where that might be possible. There’s no reason to think it was anything beyond that. And even what he might “know”, one thing we find out in the Buffyverse is that prophecies and mystical knowledge are unreliable. That doesn’t mean they aren’t often a guide and sometimes spot on – but often they are not. Kind of like any “good” theology, I’d say a guide but not inerrant – not by a long shot. Which leads me into thoughts about Angel and Darla and love (and actually Lindsey). The word love is used in so many ways in our language (in all languages, if I’m not mistaken). There is no hard and fast definition. It doesn’t follow a logical pattern. Anyone who has ever experienced anything in the regions of love (which I think means most everyone) can tell you that. We’ve seen Lindsey’s fascination with Darla already and we’ve only seen it grow. That may be all it is but that is often a lot. As to whether it is *also* his way of doing Wolfram & Hart’s bidding is an interesting question. I don’t think it can have a yes or no answer. The two different motives can possibly work together. (You said that “they” seemed surprised by Darla’s illness. Lindsay was. I don’t think for a second that Holland was and I saw no indication of it.) On Angel and Darla’s love, I don’t think you can call it love in the past. When Darla leaves him for Holtz, the writers were letting us know this. It seems that Angel, *now*, has developed some form of love (which is shown by his willingness to sacrifice himself) and it does have to do with the many, many years they spent together. This is not the same as his love for Buffy but there are many forms of love. I don’t think Angel has low self-esteem, though he does feel guilt, which is sort of his prime motivator (based on his soul and his past). It isn’t whether he is willing to sacrifice himself for Darla because of guilt or because of love. Our romanticism wants to say that the two things don’t work together but they do. Angel’s anger – destruction of the anteroom – we will see the continuing fruits of that in the episodes to come. It is one of the “big bads” of the season. The Buffyverse sort of created the idea of the Big Bad. Buffy continues to have an identifiable one each season (though season six is tricky). Angel doesn’t really play by those rules (but Wolfram and Hart emerges this season as a series Big Bad). Really good observation about Darla and the lipstick and the reminder of blood in her mouth. I’m looking forward to your Angel reactions in the ones you’ve already seen.

Wow! Darla sure sings better than Angel.

zerofk

To be fair my dog sings better than Angel. Or he would, if I had one.

Ron Fehr

So Domi, another one of your wishes came true. Drusilla is back. At least Wolfram and Hart didn't have to resurrect her from the grave.

James

Hi Domi, you are such a great reactor! Your discussion of this episode was SO good! Thank you!

CeNedra

Julie Benz will be 50 on May 1st 😱😱😱 ikr

Hmm that vampire who killed Darla in the end, I feel like I've seen her before... :-D I'm a bit ambivalent about the trial itself. On the one hand it's well done, but on the other it feels a bit generic. Three trials, a commentator saying how nobody ever succeeded, having to fake sacrifice yourself to save another, ... it's all so cliché. Oh and btw, Angel is an idiot for not realising that big pedestal smack in the middle of the hallway _with a light beam shining onto it_ might be important. He runs right past it! Sure he was in pain at the time but he saw it clearly before he started running. He should've ran to it immediately, and only then to the door.

This episode rules. One of my favorites from the whole series. It’s episodes like this that make me wonder how people could watch Buffy but not Angel when so many of the characters that were originally introduced in Buffy have their stories continued and fleshed out on Angel.

Melissa Murphy

Lorne does not know Darla, he is not connected to the group in a big way, at least not yet, so why would he care? he's just a guide at this point.

Thom Purdy

How could you not fall in love with Darla?!

UTU49

Poor Angel. He compares poorly to non-existent dogs.

UTU49

Drusilla's appearance in this episodes is... Awesome? Super cool? Amaze-balls? Effulgent? I can't think of the right adjective.

Ron Fehr

What's another word that means effulgent? Oh yeah, gleaming.

Ron Fehr

Perhaps he already considers Angel a friend. I think it would explain his helping out.

Dave Ford

"His head's too full of you, Grandmother." "Stop calling me that." "Don't be cross. I could be your mummy..."

Stargazer1682

"the most" complex? It's relative. There are so many complex and nuanced characters throughout the Buffyverse, and we're only like, halfway through.

Ryan Martinez

That ending is such an amazing reveal. I can remember being a teenager watching this show week to week and being utterly shocked to the core when Dru walked in. I was left in a state of utter disbelief. Just, dumbstruck.

Ron Fehr

I loved "Lindsey, what the hell?", followed a second later by "Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God...". Couldn't have asked for a better reaction. Yo never disappoint, Domi.

Dave Ford

He does have a better singing voice than one other person in the Buffyverse. but that's about ir - after that your down to the imaginary canines.

Ron Fehr

It's a bit humorous that just a while ago Darla wanted Angel to turn her, but he refused. This time he was willing, but Darla said no.

Veronika

This whole reaction was such a fantastic rollercoaster but your surprise at Dru's entrance was everything! <3

Domi E

personally, i wouldn’t know!! (clearly)

Domi E

that’s a good point! i hadn’t thought about it that way, i just figured he would care about people regardless of knowing them or not. we’ll keep watching and see, still getting to know lorne!

Domi E

that’s very true, it was such a great episode i do hope most people watch it cause it’s SO good!!

Domi E

WHAAAAAT?! okay she is TRULY a vampire!

Domi E

oh but come on zero, cliches can be cool sometimes no? 😜😜

Domi E

james you’re so sweet and this has made my day, THANK YOU!

Domi E

YAYY!!! it’s so exciting 😆

Domi E

haha poor angel his talents are elsewhere

Domi E

agreed agreed agreed

Domi E

ah that must have been such an exciting moment, I LOVE IT!!

Domi E

haha thank you ron!!

CeNedra

Exactly 2 weeks younger than me.. she looks 20 years younger tho 🤷‍♀️🤣

That’s Not Acting

I don’t understand the question. Lorne does that exact thing with anyone who comes in looking for guidance. It’s just what he does.

That’s Not Acting

Great reaction as always but it seemed like maybe you missed the real tragedy at the end. And it’s that reversal of fate that really elevated this episode beyond just another cliche quest story.

Stargazer1682

I've read that Julie Benz had never really sung on camera before; and she's talked about how nervous she was, but Tim Minear convinced her (or insisted) she sing it herself, rather than someone else be dubbed over her. But it's so damned good! I would love to have a complete recording of her rendition, without the dialog over it. Honestly, is there anything sexier than a woman singing some sultry jazz?
