I always find it ironic that ever since Season 2, for all the years Spike wanted to kill Buffy, he had open access to her home, but as soon as he declares that he loves her - bang, he's exiled.😅 It's always bothered me that after going to Spike for help multiple times, and after he gets knocked out trying to help fight Glory at the hospital, Buffy can't even be bothered to make polite conversation with him at the Bronze. She treats him like something on the bottom of her shoe. I never thought this before but maybe she's that rude because she is resisting at least an attraction to him, if not stronger feelings. For subtext, one of my favorite writers on the show, Jane Espenson, reportedly had a post-it up in her office that said, "Buffy has sex dreams about Spike."

Hannah Weber

You’re so cute!! And yeah James marsters’ tiny facial expressions are incredible.

Hannah Weber

Spike + Dru = spuke!! You know, like “spook” Hehe 🧛‍♀️ 🧛‍♂️

Ron Fehr

I don't know. Spuke doesn't sound very nice. Take away the s and you have puke. Lol

Bud Haven

When Spike walked into the barrier and realized Buffy had locked him out, you could see William the bloody awful poet looking at her.

Ron Fehr

The only reason that Spike was able to feed off of the girl was because she was already dead, when Dru broke her neck. Dru lied to Spike. The chip was still working.

Foamy

Enjoyed the Dennis cameo

Superplin

I love this episode, too. I think it’s largely underrated.

Darrell Palmer

This reaction was well worth the wait!! 🥳

Note that when Spike approaches Buffy at the Bronze he is wearing a button-up shirt like Riley would wear and rather than his long leather jacket he is wearing one like Angel wears. He's trying to present himself to look like Boyfriend material to Buffy.

I have not read The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (I really should one day...) but I love Tara and Willow's discussion about it. "All Quasimodo's actions were selfishly motivated. He had no moral compass, no understanding of right. Everything he did he did out of love for a woman who'd never be able to love him back." I wonder which white-haired vampire this could apply to... As for Spike: "We have something, Buffy." after she's told him unequivocally that she doesn't like him. That is 100% stalker behaviour. I'm once again reminded of Giles' quote from season 2: "It's not love. It's obsession. Selfish, banal obsession."

UTU49

"Take away the s and you have puke." Perfect!

Darrell Palmer

"Fuck that watch order!" Oh yeah, I agree. I love your predictions for the next Buffy episode and absolutely can't wait to see how that plays out. 🥳

UTU49

So you are shipping Spuffy hard? You are shipping the protagonist with a serial killer? Is that wise? I shipped Hermione with Voldemort. I shipped Katniss with president Snow. I shipped Jon Snow with Cersei Lannister. I shipped Arwen with Sauron. I shipped Princess Leia with The Emperor. I also shipped Little Red Riding Hood with the Big Bad Wolf. I'm kidding. But I question the idea of shipping the protagonist with someone evil. :)

Shaun Houghton

Generally speaking Spike feeds of his victims, not always, but generally. I'd say he was more Predator than Serial Killer.

Bud Haven

I don't think warning Domi that her favorite ship isn't going to go well is necessary And very spoilery. I'm going to recommend she skip your post.

Henrik Holst

lied and lied, what she tried to say was that the chip hadn't changed him and that he was still bad. Spike had up to this moment begun to see that the chip had changed him just how Angel:s soul had changed him.

Henrik Holst

that's some really weird ships there my friend :-)

Henrik Holst

Domi have already seen S5 of Angel before so she have seen Spike ex Buffy already years ago, she have spoken of it several times already.

GaveUp

Do not assume because domi has seen anything past where we are that she is any different from another reactor. She has explicitly asked to not have these assumptions made and based on reactions alone clearly doesn’t remember anything from the future.

Mark Sahba

I guess I don't understand the Spuffy shipping. He is a stalker. He's broken into her home, stolen and gone through her clothing. In this episode, he chained her to a wall and told her to say she loved him or he would have Drew kill her. If this was a human male, he should be in jail. I guess I just don't get the desire for Spike to succeed in his bullying of Buffy.

Ron Fehr

I believe that she also said that if she hadn't spoken of future things (which she may have forgotten), it's better not to bring some things up, assuming that she already knows.

Marty Beck

I find Domi's takes on Spuffy fascinating, because she comes to it with knowledge of it from future AtS and BtVS episodes (even if it is just rumor or second-hand accounts). It is similar in a way to how she took to Cordy right away in Buffy S1 in part because she knew something of what she would become...same with Faith.

Ron Fehr

It seems like tying up Buffy's hands was the only way that she couldn't stop Spike from telling Buffy that he loved her. She couldn't run away or even cover her ears. In a way, Spike had no choice but to do something drastic.

Martin Waits

Nope nope nope. I think Spike is fascinating, but "he had no choice but to do something drastic" is not something you want to throw around as an excuse.

Dave Ford

Martin, well said. Another reactor, SoFieReacts has mentioned this often in her season 4 reactions - that Spike has a very confused attitude toward sex and violence and often seems to treat them interchangeably. We all remember his idea of romantic love toward Dru involved tying her up and torturing her.

Shaun Houghton

Remember people, kinks may be fun, but they need consent from all individuals involved.

Martin Waits

Totally, Dave. Love, sex, and violence are basically all the same to Spike.

Ron Fehr

I don't think that there was violent intent at first. Spike just wanted Buffy in a position where she had to hear the words. That's basically what I meant. Of course, Spike being Spike, violence ensued, and that's when it was not acceptable.

Martin Waits

"Also, you can tell it's not gonna have a happy ending when the main guy is all bumpy." 😉

Ray D

Willows headache is from the spell that she did last episode to save Dawn from Glory

Ron Fehr

I get the feeling that Joyce is the only person that Spike would never hurt. In the season two finale, there was a slightly awkward moment, where Joyce mention seeing Spike before. Spike responded by reminding her when, but he made no attempt to hurt her. This was before the chip, so he was already changing. Also, in Lovers Walk in season three, Spike was pouring out his feelings to Joyce about Dru leaving him. Even in the scene where Angel wants to enter the house, Spike is behind Joyce, pretending, only pretending, that he was going to drink from her. I don't recall a single time when Spike made any threatening moves or remarks towards Joyce.

Kate

This is one of the episodes that really show all Spuffy shippers don't come to it with the same enthusiasm lol. Spike's behavior in this episode turned me off of them for a good while, it's usually one I skip on solo rewatches. Ah, the Spuffy ship. Such choppy waters.
