Hm.... Honestly I'm still quite unsure about my thoughts on this ep.

The amazing thing about Angel reviving Kate is that he was incapable of giving her CPR. Yes, he's could do the chest compressions, but not the mouth-to-mouth. The powers that be must have intervened.

Domi is happy, everything in the world is perfect.

It's interesting to see some of these episodes reacted to by other reactors around the same time. Riley Lynn just reacted to this a few days ago. She had a much more surprised reaction to Angel and Darla's exchange about "three times". So, mazel tov, I guess.

I was looking at the episode you couldn't remember and I thought I'd search out the actress who played Rebecca. I typed in Tamara Angel as parameters but got a Brazilian singer 'Tamara Angel' from Sao Paolo. I thought that things were getting too connected and stopped.

If anyone hasn't heard, Angel had an epiphany. Episodes like this is why I love the Buffyverse. Amazing episode. I think the reason Wesley could get up and help Cordy towards the end without being in pain is because his adrenaline was going. That's what I think at least. I am pretty sure the Powers That Be intervened and allowed Angel to enter Kate's apartment without an invitation. That's my take on it at least. Good thing that family was dead or Angel would have went splat when he drove the truck into the house. Pretty sure he didn't know they were dead since Wesley said they saved the little girl. Imagine driving through the house wall and smack right into the Invitation Spell Barrier. That would be embarrassing. Also lucky that Gunn, Cordy, and Wesley weren't close to that wall or they could have gotten run over. That was pretty reckless Angel lol. "If Nothing We Do Matters, Then All That Matters Is What We Do..."

As others have mentioned, I think the PTB stepped in and bent the rules so Angel could enter Kate’s apartment. The conversation with the two at the end she mentioned that she has faith and “we’re not alone in this” is her coming to the realization that some higher powers were looking out for her well being.

I'm in the camp that Angel was able to save Kate because of the "second chance" he'd earned for Darla in "The Trial". Since it wasn't able to be applied to Darla, it was granted to Kate.

Ron Fehr

Interesting idea. I like it.

Why is it that other demons can break into people's homes (for example Wes), but vampires need an invite? In Angel's cases, it's not fair.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to suggest this (or the last episode) is similar to the misdirect of "Enemies" or cheapens the resolution. Nor would I class "Eternity" as being the same as "Enemies" either. "Eternity" wasn't trying to "fool" us, it was a reminder of how dangerous Angel can really be if unrestrained; and a chance to revisit a side of the character without needing to commit to a much longer storyline to resolve. Did they subvert expectations here by setting things up with Angel sleeping with Darla in the last episode? To some degree, yes, but the resolution isn't remotely designed to pull the rug out from audience, so the writers can laugh because they "got you again!" (Maybe a LITTLE of that). It mainly underscores just how much of a rock bottom Angel had hit; and then he's caught a break. It's like he's trying to kill himself, only for him to survive; and it's not for the audience's sake, but for his, because now he has a new perspective on what he has to do. And like Lorne says, it's not to go back to where he used to be, to go to a new place in his life, whatever that might be. As for Kate, there again, I don't even think that was about subverting expectations; it was a climactic cliffhanger, after a fashion, that could have gone either way. It's not like this episode starts off with Kate just getting up on her own and being fine; that would have been the ultimate copout of the setup. Shock value for the sake of shock value. Someone still had to step in and save her, and while it might seem like it was a quick resolution, the importance of Angel doing that isn't made clear until Kate reminds him and the audience that by all rights he shouldn't have been able to. "I never invited you in," is one of my favorite lines from the Buffyverse, that still gives me chills every time I watch it. And I absolutely love Angel saying, "If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do."

I always wished they would have dug into that lore a little. It conjures this idea in my imagination that at one point in history vampires were such enormous threats, like top of the food chain predators on Earth, that some of the most powerful mystics enacted a spell that would enchant and protect every home and continue to do so with every new home in perpetuity. And then there's the implications of, when people move, when does that barrier go away; and when it does it get activated in a new home? Like, that's probably the most logical explanation I've ever come up with for "The Freshman" how Sunday and her gang could get into Buffy's dorm, while Angel and Spike needed an invite later on; if because they were just moving in, they weren't fully settled or hadn't considered it "home" yet, so the barrier hadn't taken affect yet around their dorm room. And then you've got the shop owner from "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been," threatening to put his bedroll in the shop, so vampires can't just enter. Would that have actually worked? Was that maybe the real reason why Anne keeps a bed in her office, as a way of protecting the kids that stay there from vampires, by being the one consistent person who "lives" there?

Stargazer1682

There's no reason to assume Lorne knows everything right away. He may not have lead with the others being in danger, because he might not have known (or intuited the danger) until he mentions it. Keep in mind, at no point was Angel singing during that conversation (that we saw, anyway). How much Lorne knows and when is ambiguous, but there's no indication of an ulterior motive to hold anything back, especially when he does ultimately try to help Angel, even if he sometimes thinks it's against his better judgement.

Jenny brought up within the first 40 seconds. We're back on track, folks.

Ron Fehr

In regards to smashing into the house, maybe just the front of the truck penetrated the house, leaving Angel safe in the cab. Unlikely, I know, but I suppose it would be possible.

Is Domi sure she didn't read the title of the next episode? How did she correctly predict the return of the Queller Demon?

Ray D

I thought it was canon that the “second chance” was applied to something in the future that I won’t spoil here. But maybe I’m wrong

Ray D

Agreed. This episode is amazing. One that really is a huge impact on Angel going forward.

Ray D

I looooove this episode (really this whole two parter starting with last episode). This show is on much better footing than it was in season 1 but it still seemed to be a show without a mission statement or overall goal for the characters and it’s finally found it, “if nothing we do matters, all that matters is what we do”. Very profound and Angel’s new mission statement. Angel went dark because he thought that’s what it took to defeat evil. When Holland Manners made him realize that there is no “defeating evil” it will always exist in some form. It sent Angel into a crisis and hit his rock bottom. But he’s used that feeling that nothing matters to forge a new mission statement and it’s a good one and worth repeating, “if nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do”

Stargazer1682

Never said, just assumed by some. This makes more sense, in my opinion.

Ron Fehr

I guess the episode after The Ring was Eternity.

Ron Fehr

I had to check what the next Angel episode is called, and I can see why it's a spoiler

"Are you okay?" "No. You really hurt my feelings." "I don't want you to come back and work for me. I want to work for you." I love this episode.
