Well, this is the episode where Warren is really showing his true colors. He doesn't feel guilty about what he did, and he'll do anything to avoid going to jail. Right now, it seems like Andrew and Jonathan have no choice but to go along with what Warren says. Jonathan at least is starting to realize the seriousness of the choice he made to join the gang. Whether or not he feels remorse for what they did to Katrina, I don't know, but he's showing signs of regret for teaming with the other two.

As a Blockhead I am legally obligated to point out that Buffy name drops New Kids on the Block in this episode. As the way she does it just doesn't ring true for me (for various reasons), I have formulated an idea as to how it happened. The youngest New Kid is named Joe McIntyre. He has an older sis named Amy who wanted to be an actress in Hollywood. Now, I never heard a call to arms through the Blockhead grapevine of an acting gig of hers that we all just "had to support". (And, trust me, we would have.) So, possibly she pivoted? The credits include the name Amy McIntyre Britt as one of the casting personnel. So what if, to acknowledge their NKOTB connection, the name drop happened? And thus, 2 of my very favorite things became linked: Buffy and NKOTB.

“No Will” No Spirit. It’ll make sense soon.

Girl4Music

I mean Buffy is trying to make time for Dawn but Dawn can tell that she doesn’t really feel it. Being part of her and all. The callback to “Dawnie, I have to” hurts.

Girl4Music

I mean could it also be both? That she doesn’t spend time with her friends and sister because she’s fucking Spike? Work can’t take up all her time. Nor slaying. The majority of her time is spent in bed… or rather everywhere else but the bed… fucking Spike. The literal personification of the hatred for herself. That’s got to have something to do with it. And the way she was punching him to a pulp while calling him “soulless” and “monster” and “dead inside”. Perhaps it’s how she really feels about herself. Kinda like Faith in ‘Who Are You’ when she was calling herself a “murderous bitch” while beating on Buffy. The thing you must remember above all when it comes to how these episodes are structured in Season 6 is everything has a metaphorical meaning that links back to Buffy and the way she thinks and feels. Absolutely everything.

Girl4Music

You’ll hate me saying this but Tara has just come out of an abusive relationship herself so she can absolutely identify and relate to what Buffy is feeling about Spike at the moment. Which makes me think more that the parallels between Buffy and Willow aren’t actually parallels but more juxtapositions. There’s things that happen later down the line that really make this line of thought more apparent. But basically,… I think Willow and Spike are the same character this season or representing the same or similar things and it’s Buffy and Tara that parallel each other even though Buffy is violent and abusive herself to Spike. But I genuinely think that that’s just her personal way to deal as you said. The parallels I’m thinking about are more to do with feeling ashamed for who you are,… that you might not be a good person. And sorry to bring up ‘The Body’ again but the conversation Buffy and Tara have in that episode is pretty much saying the same thing. Especially when Tara reveals that she thought the thoughts she was having made her feel wrong or like she was a horrible person. I don’t know. Some fruit for thought. But I definitely think it’s Willow + Spike Buffy + Tara for the actual parallels this season.

Girl4Music

“I can’t seem to get passed the last 2 minutes of this episode.” Yeah, that seems to happen a lot in this show. The ending scene for a lot of episodes ends up being all anyone can think or talk about because it hits that hard. Don’t think this is the last you’ll feel this way. They continue to do it.

Girl4Music

“I feel like crossing the rape line - I’m so glad that she like verbally said it as well. You know it wasn’t just like implied or whatever. I’m very glad that she made it very clear that what they were doing is rape.” Hmm, yeah. But they never do that with Willow. Possibly because she’s a woman. I don’t know. Just a guess. But please realize that while this was just attempted rape because they were stopped, Willow was not. Nor did she stop herself from performing on Tara while Tara was mentally inebriated. It was successful RAPE. And I feel like as much as you want them to get back together again, you have to acknowledge that what Willow did to Tara was unforgivable. So they shouldn’t. I just hate that every rape/sexual assault scene in this season is only called out as actual rape for plot reasons except THAT ONE. They gloss over it like it doesn’t even fucking matter. I hate it. I hate that she rapes Tara and they never say it! Never call it out for what it is! You can’t apologize for raping someone. You just can’t. It doesn’t work that way.

I literally showed my stylist a photo of Buffy from Gone and told her I want to grow my hair out to that style. 😂

Girl4Music

By the way monitors,… please delete my comments of they’re potential spoilers. I don’t know what is and what isn’t but you absolutely have permission to just delete them. Or ask me to if it only works that way. I will do it.

Wisdom of the Sphynx

If is is any consolation each of us walked these same steps through the pain of the Buffyverse; but you have us along with you for the journey. ❤️‍🩹

Also, more relevant to this episode: It’s actually a favorite, despite it being so very dark. I think it touches on so many core themes of the season, and like you, I love seeing Buffy and Tara having a friendship separate from Willow. It’s what they both deserve.

Captain Hammer

I think she was trying to walk the walk and do what she told Faith to do when Faith accidentally killed someone. But it's a very hard grey area. Like Giles said, she's on the front lines of a war every night. Accidents are going to happen.

Ray D

This is where the trio goes from like fun comedy villains to serious. Especially Warren.

Raven Dark

Oh, this show. Jeez. Its effect on you is awful and wonderful all at the same time. What a great reaction, Domi. Please be okay.

Ray D

Not to spoil anything specific but there are going to be a lot more very sad and depressing scenes and seeing how that final scene made you feel in this one I just hope that you’ll be ok. Just mentally prepare yourself for more trauma to come

rattusprat

Good to see you draw the parallel with what the trio did to Katrina and Spike seeming to push ahead whenever Buffy verbalizes a "no". As you said it's not exactly the same but still in the same ballpark. But then you were struggling, almost on Spike's side, when he tried to prevent her from giving herself up to the police. In that moment does Spike want what's best for Buffy, or what's best for Spike? If he does think he's doing what's best for Buffy, he is definitely not letting Buffy make her own choice in the matter. While this is not related to sex, I would also put Spike's action here in a similar ballpark. He is trying to prevent Buffy from making her own decision about how to live her life. And on Buffy's choice to turn herself in, that's a complicated one. Is it: (1) Buffy doing the right and moral thing. (2) Buffy overwhelmed with guilt for killing someone (this to me is the part that Spike doesn't understand - he can't understand guilt as he doesn't have a soul. In a parallel situation in Season 3 Faith felt the guilt for killing the Deputy Mayor but tried her best to mash it deep down because it was too much to deal with). (3) Buffy seeing an easy way out of her current life that feels wrong (ie Dawn's interpretation). I think Buffy's choice is about all of these things. The show is displaying its great writing again by having the character motivations be complex and multi-layered.

Such a great episode. Not exactly "enjoyable", but certainly emotional. I love that it's Tara to whom Buffy opens up. It always reminds me of The Body, where Tara lets Buffy know that she can talk to her when she needs it. I feel like Buffy, either consciously or not, remembered that in this episode.

madfem

I know you enjoy rewatching this show a lot, so I suggest you rewatch 3x15 'Consequences' and 4x16 'Who are you' in tandem with your next rewatch of this episode cuz there are great parallels between these three 😉😉

I always appreciated that they did not remotely pull punches on Buffy's depression, as in clinical depression, and how insanely toxic her and Spike really are and always have been. There's charisma and chemistry from both but that pairing was never healthy, even pre-season 6. Spikes always been more obsessed than in love, at least to me, and Buffy as Said is just using him to feel anything in the depth of her depression and despair. The trio; You aren't supposed to like the villains, which I think is kind of the point of them. They start as silly and (allegedly) funny and not something to take seriously, and because no one really takes them seriously (including the audience) they slide and slide and do more and more fucked up things. There's a condensed parallel there with Spike as he's done all kinds of messed up things over the previous seasons that the audience just ignores because we like him. Willow's apology is her actions and Tara sees that. Words are cheap and often we say sorry more to make ourselves feel better as it doesn't really do anything for the other person. It's so much more impactful to have Willow show her intention to get through this and be better by doing it and doing it with no indication she's seeking any kind of "reward". I guess Double Meat isn't viewed very well but I would never call it the worst episode of the this season. At worst it's just a kind of mid monster of the week. S6's worst episode is so much worse than just being boring.

The Buffy and Tara friendship was so underrated, I loved that ending scene between them.

Ron Fehr

Buffy didn't want to be forgiven, but that is one thing that is not under her control. I keep thinking about what Giles said once, that forgiveness isn't done because it's earned, but because it's needed. And Buffy needs forgiveness, even if she feels that she doesn't deserve it. That's one thing I love about Tara. She's wise enough to see that, and willing to forgive Buffy.

Ron Fehr

Your comment about Willow's apology being in her actions just further confirms the saying, "Actions speak louder than words." And I recall in her relationship with Oz, when she and Xander were found making out, that she wanted to talk it out with Oz. Oz rejected the idea because there was nothing beneficial in it for him. Willow just wanted to talk to make herself feel better, but to Oz that was "on the empty side." Her guilt was just something that she would have to live with.

Ok, here I go, trying to binge your Buffy reactions from here to 6x18 today. Wish me luck! I’m gonna post some comment in each episode, that you probably won’t read because I’m so late lol First thing, I really missed your Buffy reactions! Glad to finally have the time to catch up And after that, wow, fantastic reaction to an amazing episode. And the most amazing thing about it it’s that it’s not even in my top five of the season. The scene when Katrina is murdered still chills the heck out of me, the exact moment when you go from “haha stupid nerds, such losers, grow up” to shit getting real. Many parallels with Faith's storyline in this one too, from the “accidental murder” and Buffy taking responsibility, to Spike making almost the exact same points than Faith trying to justify it, to Buffy beating Spike while actually beating herself, much like Faith did in “Who are you?”. I love these season so much, even if it’s such a tough watch most of the time. Ok, on to the next! (as soon as I finish your review)

Alex Wright

Never looked at so called "love potions" and "love spells" in fantasy narratives the same way after watching that scene in Dead Things. Quite a contrast to the humourous way they were shown in Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.

Alex Wright

Katrina's murder wasn't remotely an accident, especially not for Warren. Don't know Californian law, but hiting a kidnap victim with a sparkling wine bottle to prevent her escape - after attempting to rape her - is definitely murder under English law. The mens rea (required mental state) of intention to cause serious harm is there. I suspect in California it's at the very least second degree murder. Or maybe felony murder, since all three are committing serious felonies - kidnap, attempted rape - and death resulted.

Alex Wright

Jonathan has a line and feels more uncomfortable yes. But kidnap and rape - I guess we should remember - weren't his line. At least as long as the victim was an unnamed woman he didn't fully see as a human being. Although I guess that's perhaps to be expected after Superstar, when Jonathan also used magic to rewrite people's free will and take what he wanted without worrying about consent.

X-man

It's not the only time. This happens routinely in the show. In season 1, a bug pretending to be a school teacher, was preying on teenage boys and it was never called out. Faith tried to rape Xander and it never got called what it was. Faith also committed rape by deception on Riley when she did the body switch with Buffy and Buffy blamed him for being assaulted. Buffy committed assault on Spike in Gone. But it was played for laughs. The writers of this show have personal problems.

Girl4Music

I feel like the predator part of the Bug Lady story was called out and made plain and clear for what it is. But you’re right. They never treat it for as serious as it is because they focus on Xander’s emasculation feelings and the fact he hasn’t boned a girl yet instead which was just completely the wrong choice after you see a literal adult teacher attempt assault on Xander and other male students. Yes, the writers really do have problems. Especially Whedon. Because most of these non-acknowledged or addressed sexual situations come under his personal pen. I’ll never get over the fucking Willow and Tara one though.
