Ah now this is a lot of fun..

"it's so Shakespeare it adds up" - oh, this is Total Shakespeare - right down the the lead character being utterly unable to spot a women in drag a man despite it being completely obvious and the 'Present from Stratford Upon Avon' mug in the doctor's office. Lots and lots of proper historical goodies in this - Marlow did (quite famously) die in a tavern brawl so that was pretty well signposted for a lot of the audience. And the young boy, obsessed with death, was John Webster - who grew up to become a playwright writing some of grimiest and darkest of Elizabethan theatre.

But, yeah, and Judi Dench utterly steals the entire film. Love the way Elizabeth tests 'Master Kent' who gives her a bow rather than a curtsy.

The one time i feel the academy actually gave the "right" movie Best Picture over the obvious favorite that year. Saving Private Ryan is great, but Shakespeare in Love is better. Joseph Fiennes was robbed of a nomination, he is so perfect in this role. One of the greatest romances ever put to film.
