This is one of my favourite interactions in the entire Buffyverse. Which is odd considering it’s Season 7 and I don’t like a lot of Season 7. But this is when Anya and Willow finally learned to understand one another. This interaction directly reminds me of their first interaction in ‘Dopplegangland’ where they also did a spell together and sat opposite one another. Of course Anya was no friend to Willow then. She just wanted to get back to the Wishverse to find her amulet that would make her be a vengeance demon again. But the fact that these two scenes parallel each other shows the growth that both have gone through and the understandings they have made in their arcs. Willow - originally warning Anya that magic is dangerous but never really listened to her own warning. She wanted to be dangerous. Now coming the other side of turning evil and knowing fully well just how dangerous magic can be and how it would effect her to be so dangerous again. No warnings this time. They know well what can go down. All her growth is in her coming to understand the risks and consequences of doing dangerous and dark magic and that she doesn’t want to go there ever again. Anya - originally manipulating Willow into doing a spell with her without telling her the truth about what it was for. Now back to being a vengeance demon but is actively going against her duty as one because she’s not happy with it. It makes her upset to inflict pain. Something she admits to Willow in this scene and to which Willow can empathise with her on. All her growth is in understanding being human even though she isn’t a human being herself anymore. Coming to realize that being a vengeance demon isn’t who she is. The interaction also shows that Anya still likes to push Willow’s buttons just in jest - but otherwise she was pretty civil towards her here despite the last time they interacted Willow attempted to kill her. And the reason for it is because she knows how much Willow regrets being the way she was. How sorry she is for it. There’s no need to punish her more than she was already punishing herself. That wouldn’t accomplish anything. And then there was Anya’s final line: “it did get a little sexy, didn’t it?” and Willow’s automatic response to her in agreement. You could say this is the first time they realized that they had become friends.

Damn! I spent ages (well, two minutes) restarting my Bluetooth headphones before checking that 1. there was no sound on the laptop and 2. your sheepish grin. I think I might be getting old...

Ron Fehr

Happy Birthday Domi. Side note- this would have also been my paternal grandmother's birthday.

Ron Fehr

I was wondering at the beginning too.

Girl4Music

WILLOW: “I don’t want to leave here.” TARA: “Why not?” WILLOW: “It’s so bright. And there’s something out there.” Turns out Tara was much safer in her own bedroom. Even if her father could walk in whenever he wanted. I hate that damn trauma-inducing fucking window in Buffy’s house. The place where all disaster strikes.

Girl4Music

“Come in. Enjoy my personal space” Yeah, Willow tends to ignore and disregard consent. Still a thing. Probably always will be. You know, this episode is so brilliant. Like it’s executed so brilliantly. But I feel like it only explores half the story. WHY is Willow subconsciously manifesting a spell where her friends can’t see her? Her magic has always been tied to her emotions and her insecurities and fears does make her magic go wonky without her really being able to control it…. But as good as this episode is, they don’t really address the deeper problem going on here. Which is that Willow’s guilt and grief causes her to create an alternative dimension or reality whereby her friends that she fears won’t forgive her or trust her ever again can’t see her and she can’t see them. It’s trauma. She’s self-sabotaging. And because of the whole demon Gnarl thing, there’s such a confusion as to why things are happening the way they are only to conclude that Gnarl was just an unlucky coincidence. It’s Willow that’s created the shift in time and place. Subconsciously. They don’t address this revelation at all. They just move on from it. It’s really frustrating that an episode this brilliant can be written but cannot be continued or followed on.

Some fans seem to have little problem forgiving Angel for his many evil deeds when he was without a soul but are less inclined to forgive Spike that one event when he was in the same situation. Spike even sought out his soul while Angel was cursed with his. I continue to be baffled.

Don't worry Domi, nobody noticed the microphone thing. There's a handful of monster designs in the show that stand out, and Gnarl is definitely one of them. I love it. And the actor is great in it. It's played by one of the Gentlemen from Hush. I really enjoy the Willow/Anya interactions. I didn't like it when they were passive-aggressive to each other, but after the troll episode they became more mellow and fun. "Is it difficult or time consuming?" flashes through my mind any time someone asks if I can help them.

Girl4Music

It’s because the show treats Angel and Angelus as two separate entities but there is no Spikelus equivalent. Spike is just Spike. They are his actions and choices and therefore he will be taken to task for them. There’s no split-divide identity personality disorder going on with him like there is with Angel/Angelus. Angel’s redemption story falls completely flat because of this. It’s more like an absolution story.

Girl4Music

I have no criticism. I think this episode is great. One of the better episodes of Season 7. Absolutely. But I just feel like don’t go far enough with the concept of it and with what gets revealed from it. It deserves a continuation as far as I’m concerned because it is not enough to address what’s actually going on with Willow this season.

Georgina Cussans

I did the same thing😭i'm too used to my bluetooth headphones dying/disconnecting randomly lol

Khanach

Well, happy birthday! As a present you got an absolutely creepifying, Willow-eating monster! Very appropiate for a Buffyverse birthday, I'd say XD

Girl4Music

Come on though. Who wouldn’t want to eat Willow? She’s adorable.

Ron Fehr

As for myself, I got a little grossed out when I saw the monster eating a strip of skin. And I don't usually get rattled.

Leijette Riopel

I have always just thought that Anya and Spike could see Willow because they’re demons. Gnarl could also see her, and when she tries to do a spell to repel him, he tells her that spells leave him alone, so maybe they are implying that her magic doesn’t work on the demons….? She doesn’t actually interact with any humans in Sunnydale this episode until the spell is broken. The scene where she is wandering the hall in the high school always felt to me like none of the students or teachers around her could see her. Obviously the episode never confirmed whether anyone human could see her or not, but that’s what I have always assumed was happening.

Brendan O'Connor

This episode has one of my favorite Spike moments. Currently he is having trouble telling the difference between what’s real and what isn’t and he realizes he isn’t the real issue as Willow/Buffy and Xander only focus on him when they should be talking to each other. The scene playing out both ways is a great example something more than the characters missing each other by coincidence, and great acting by James Marsters

Khanach

Quoting Xander in Go Fish, “The skin is the best part!”

Hosman

This is actually a pretty amazing episode, from start to finish.

Robbie Whitesell

i was worried it was my headset at the start. i paused it. looked into it and found out it wasnt me lol

Ron Fehr

I think you're right, that Xander didn't think that Willow was the one guilty of deskinning the victim. When speaking with Buffy at the time, he started his sentence with "I know what you're thinking." He wasn't referring to his own thoughts, but Buffy's.

Ron Fehr

About Willow's spells not working on demons, I'm not sure you're right. In the final episode of last season she was able to convince Anya to release her, even though Anya said mind control didn't work on vengeance demons. Granted, she didn't make Anya release her, but merely put the thought in her head.

loopkill

Ummmm holy shit, you just blew my mind with that HIMYM reference! I can't believe I never thought about that after watching both of these shows a bajillion times!! 🤯🤯🤯

Alex Wright

One of Willow's early season 4 spells definitely worked on Spike.

Alex Wright

Feliz aniversário! Espero que o seu dia seja perfeito!

Ron Fehr

My guess for no blonde girl from Venice this episode is probably related to Buffy's budget. Going overseas to two European cities (three if you count the Giles and Willow scenes) was likely all that was allotted to the show.

Ron Fehr

I didn't even notice that Willow was in a different bedroom at the end of the episode, but it makes sense. Since she was still staying at Buffy's house, she wouldn't want to constantly be in a room that held terrible memories.

Shaun Houghton

Nobody else has said it, but I will. That is a great look for you Domi.

Rio de Tanana

The writers messes up with Willow and 20+ years later, fandom keeps falling for it. Too bad for fandom, the writers did figure out they had made a massive mistake when they found out that they were actually going to need her this season. So here’s the corrective redemption slog, which should have been completely unnecessary.

Girl4Music

It’s not because they’re demons. It’s because she doesn’t care about them and their opinions of her. As for the students in the school possibly not being able to see her… even if that was the case… she can obviously still see them and she could still see all the people at the airport even if they couldn’t see her. The only actual humans that she can’t see are Buffy, Xander and Dawn because they’re the people she cares about most of all and is worried about being forgiven by. Her magic is manifesting the way it is because of her emotions - as it always does. As it always will do. It’s got nothing to do with what species the characters are or aren’t. It’s all to do with her insecurities and anxieties. Who she really cares about and who’s opinion or perception matters the most to her. She most certainly doesn’t care about Spike or Anya’s opinions/perceptions or her thus she can see them and they can see her. It’s not because they’re demons at all. I do have a good theory for this that involves and informs what happens in episodes following on from this but it’s really only a headcanon that makes sense to me based on how I would have written her arc this season because I think they do a very poor job of it although I still really love her endgame.

Shaun Houghton

I have no idea what you are babbling about.
