The author Jacob Bacharach returns for a sequel to our Junk Filter episode about Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, with a look at his long-awaited Dune: Part Two.

Villeneuve said in interviews that he thought of Frank Herbert’s novel as an allegory for the French Canadians under the thumb of the authoritarian government of Maurice Duplessis that used the Catholic Church to subjugate the Quebecois people before the Quiet Revolution of the 1960s. Jacob and I use this allegory as a jumping off point to extend the metaphor: are the Bene Gesserit the Catholic Church? Are the Fremen the FLQ? And is Paul Atreides the saviour of an independent Quebec, the Kwisatz Tabarnak?

Plus: Jacob and I discuss the charms of Dune: Part Two including how the movie differs from Frank Herbert’s novel, the arrival of Christopher Walken as the Emperor qnd Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, and our MVP Javier Bardem as Stilgar. Plus: Josh Brolin’s homoerotic ode to Timothée Chalamet, the dreaded Dune Popcorn Bucket, and a look at some of the galaxy-brained responses online from people who thought Paul was supposed to be the hero of the story.

..it's so bizarre that the bucket went from concept to production, and nobody in charge asked "Hey, maybe we shouldn't make this promotional item look like a Saw-trap, or shaped in a way that obviously and immediately evokes vagina dentata? Also, maybe this amount of plastic is sorta excessive for some trivial shit that will be in the ocean in a few months, where it no doubt will fishtrap something endangered?" Looking forward to listen to this tomorrow in the garden; Bacharach is an international treasure.

...So sick of Bene Gesserit keeping men out of STEM. EDIT//: The discussion actually made me sorta interested in seeing part 2. I felt like Dune 1 was visually beautiful and interesting, but otherwise kinda inert and oddly muted. I think you guys clocked Harkonen as having seasonal affective disorder, and that was the general vibe of the first one; beautiful but listless, and for no clear, discernable reason (other than that's part of the house-style of Villeneuve). Hearing that it's actually going the "Paul is actually a monster, not just a pretty space-twink to gawk at"-route sounds at least a little interesting. ..Though it does kinda seem very indicative of the general state of big-budget movies (at least in speculative fiction) that even just a slight twist on the bog-standard formula feels daring, or fresh. It feels like there's never been a time where more money is seen on the screen, but it's basically inversely proportional to what can actually be imagined (ie, what that money is in service of). It's getting very close to being a situation where the only way you can be creative is with set-dressing and costuming.

...watched it and, "eeeeeh, question mark, hands waving in the air". Better "turn to evil" than Anakin Skywalker, I guess. Very community-theatre towards the end (Paul being free to walk up to the Baron, The Baron deciding to crawl towards the throne like he would be the new Emperor if he could just make it up the stairs, "oh no I'm stabbed, but I also stabbed you, though! With a dagger from nowhere!, etc) Favorite moment was probably the Arrakis blind reverend mother using the voice on Jessica. Was very evocative, and communicated that "oh yeah, there are other planets where this is happening, and people like this have The Voice too".
