This audio comes from Con of Thrones 2017, where Aziz and Emmett Booth (PoorQuentyn) held a panel on how HP Lovecraft has influenced ASOIAF. Some of the audience questions were inaudible so we cut ahead to the answers after a brief pause, in some places.

Thomas Motter

Great stuff! Loved the comment on Randolph Carter, especially since he is probably the most memorable protagonist in all of Lovecraft's work.

Lady Kay, Huntress of the Wolfswood

I love Lovecraft and really enjoy hearing about his influence on other works. The black stone of the Hightower isn't greasy, it's dry. It's like the fused stone of the five forts and the dragon roads in Essos and the Black Wall of Volantis. I think the Hightower base has more to do with the Empire of the Dawn (and dragons, if they had them) than any ancient Lovecraftian aquatic race that preceded them.
