I wrote this new song for the first friend I ever lost, Gerard. My first experience of grief. Wrote this from the perspective of a 6-year-old kid who has little experience with loss. Back then, I didn't feel the full weight of grief and loss. There was only a weird mix of confusion and false hope. This song is meant to capture that feeling.
Verse 1:
Today I had the strangest day
I was told that you had gone away
That left me dazed
I saw you yesterday
Now yesterday feels like a million years ago
Verse 2:
Hours ago, I called you out to play
But your mom told me you had no hair
I said it's okay
I don't mind
But if you want I could come back another time
Chorus:
Now I'm here
Lying in a hospital bed
Watching cartoons
And waiting for news that you'd come back
Like grandma's begging you to
What do I do without you?
Verse 3:
You always had the whitest face
People tell me that you're handsome
And your smile radiates
But to me you are a rascal
For the naughty little jokes you make
Verse 4:
I'm thinking of what I should say
When I see you walk into the room
I'd ask if I could stay
Overnight
I have a feeling it'll all be all right
Chorus:
So now I'm here
Lying in a hospital bed
Watching cartoons
And waiting for news that you'd come back
Like grandma's begging you to
What do I do without you?
Refrain:
Life goes on and on and on and on and on
Life goes on and on and on and on and on
Life goes on and on and on and on and on
Life goes on and on and on and on and on
And on and on and on and on
And on and on and on and on
and on and on and on, Gerard
