The audio book as read by Wil Wheton makes this book even worse. I like Wil, but he doesn't have the range or chops to turn this turd into a... non turd?

Jenny Nicholson

I know very little about Wil so he doesn't do anything to help it, and I think the act of hearing anyone read it aloud is inherently more embarrassing

Jenny Nicholson

I do think it's really funny that he, in trying to be faithful to Ernest Cline spelling "poser" as "poseur," reads it as "pose-oor" every time

Matthew Morey

I think the horribly animated CG avatars are going to take it to a whole new level of embarrassment in the film. Now I'm actually excited to see it...

Sam Cohn

Yeah it's a pretty overrated book. Thankfully the movie looks like it's taking a lot of liberties. So hopefully we won't have to watch them reenact all of War Games. As annoying as this book is for, among other things, being a series of pop culture reference lists, the irony was not lost on me when I found myself overjoyed by your mention of Teen Witch and Girls of Rock 'N Roll (and playing it at the end).

tim_schu

I'm not optimistic that the movie is going to be good or anything but I do think that the references will work better in a visual medium. Rather than having to stop everything for a list of things you might remember they can just exist in the background or something. Unfortunately nerd references are the entire substance of the book so even if it works better here that only gets you so far...

Matthew Morey

Aw man, I couldn't put my finger on it, but that's it! Effing Reboot. Btw we can continue to wax nostalgia about Reboot and other shows of the time and publish it into a bestseller aparently. We don't need compelling characters or anything! Just nostalgia!

Blue Corn

Geniusness. That's what this is.

I probably can hardly wait for the probably multiple videos. If there’s anything I love, it’s list after list of things I know.

AndyofCT

That Synergy reference was truly, truly, truly outrageous!

Bill Lehecka

So which book is better? Trapped on a Island or RPO? I can’t wait to hear more on RPO from you. And seriously, i’m not kidding, if you think RPO is bad, Armada is like 1,000 times worse. It’ll make you regret you ever enjoyed anything Star Wars.

Dave Forest

Jenny you are both awesome and quite silly. Thanks!

Alex Woodcock-Clarke

I do agree that the book was terrible. When I read the first couple of pages, I thought: 'How clever. He's deliberately mocking the style of clunky, strangulated, subliterate fanfic to communicate how this kid only thinks in infantile toy and game modes'. Then it turned out this was the way the author actually writes. Then it also turned out he's a multi-million selling author, and I'm not. So, que voulez-vous?

Alex Woodcock-Clarke

Spielberg does have a good rep of taking bad or broken stories and turning them into great films. 'Minority Report' is a typical Philip K. Dick story, well written but also random, haphazard and trailing off into tangents, but Spielberg managed to shape a rather solid story out of that farrago. I just can't understand what he saw in the actual book of 'Ready Player One' to want to make a film out of it.

Pat The Baker

Both books sound like all kinds of eww....

2026-10-07 10:00 I'm going to be experiencing the Ready Player One phenomenon entirely through Jenny's videos, I expect, which will be the best way to experience it. As someone who was alive in the eighties I find the recent nostalgia for that period very puzzling. Not that it didn't produce interesting things but it's mainly a horrible, bleak, bigoted time in my memory and I thought we'd all quietly decided to pretend it never happened.

While this is - as always - a brilliant takedown, don't you think it was pretty 'RPO'-ish for you to be pretending to read off the book but actually just to be reciting the text off your phone?

Alex Matkovic

Can I find DJ Sebastian on SoundCloud? I would love to hire him for a party sometime.

Ficsandmusings

Amazing. Anyone commenting that your sarcasm is so understated and imperceptible I'm just going to assume has never had a conversation with a human before.

jenny, thia video finally made me become a patreon, i was laughing so hard that i realized i had to support you. i read and liked the book but i do love reading lists of things i recognize :P keep doing what you do.

I watched/played almost a third of these and I'm a 90s guy, and they were the *shit*. Hamtaro, Care Bears, (Darkheart is the coolest) Neopets, the Disney princess sequels, if you said Poptropica I would've flipped out.

Austin Baker

This is basically Twilight Sparkle in FIW. So accurate.

Brandon Blackmoor

Okay. So it's not just my old man cynicism that makes me think this movie (and book, apparently) looks profoundly inane.

Miguel Sandoval

You gonna do a Bingo video for Avengers?

Terry Wilson

Admit it. You had a lot of fun working all of those references into a story and sharing it with the world. :p

R2

Child, please! I need to know where to find that purple fluffy pom pom sitting next to the book. It's so cute.
