Last time I used vimeo pro it didn't work for like at least 80% of you guys but this is our only option because A&E is trying to turn this into a giant copyright dispute on youtube and even if I felt like suing them over a patreon video the video would stay blocked for at least an additional 30 days (and also my account would receive a strike and lose some uploading capabilities, and I would then have to also dispute the strike).

Although they don't advertise this Vimeo appears to try to prevent people from watching any content on mobile without using their app or logging in on browser. If you don't want to make an account, you should be able to view it fine on desktop without logging in!

Aimee W

cyberbully. what a great time on tumblr when it came out

Ywhre

this movie is so funny because it implies jkr has no imagination, she just parrots everything she sees in her life

JG

Omg my piano teacher also told me the wrong story about the napkins when I was a kid lmao

Wes

literally Room dialogue

Wes

gotta love that classic American realization that 80% of what you thought were creative ideas from Harry Potter are just normal British things

Michael Gilmore

My brain cannot handle the video playing and you talking at the same time -_- I'm hearing both and comprehending neither.

Avataris

Insane fact about me: when I was around 8 or 9 my mom bought this movie on iTunes when it came out and it was on our family iPad. So every time we went on road trip I would watch this movie (not having seen/read ANY of the harry potter movies or books), so I've watched this about 20 times and unfortunately know it word for word lmao.

Mitch Benn

It’s the “The Def Leppard Story” de nos jours

Mitch Benn

I was living in Edinburgh in the mid 90s around the time JKR was writing the first book (I’d graduated Edinburgh uni in 92)… I’m fairly sure the cafe was Nicolson’s (on Nicolson st)… it’s called The Brown Medicine Co now. The cafe which made the most vociferous CLAIM to being the one JKR invented Potter in was The Elephant House on George IV Bridge which I remember opening in 1994… Last time I looked it had been burned out and hadn’t been reopened yet

Mitch Benn

16.40 that’s a SPECTACULARLY bad Scots accent. It’s wrong in a way even an English person wouldn’t do it. Gotta be US/Canadian

Robert Romero Jr

I really like this format but you need to lower the audio of the thing you’re watching or pause. It makes it really hard to hear you as the film is talking over you.

Kit

That owl ornament is definitely a repurposed necklace because I had the exact same one in middle school lmao

Paulie Paul

Well Jenny definitely made the right call that there would be some not-quite-John-Williams-soundtrack music at some point! It was most obvious at around the 19:00 mark as Joanne is writing furiously and the camera pans down to the magical forest at her feet. This was a fun commentary. Too bad about the sound mix, but Jenny did acknowledge this later and corrected it the next time she did one of these (Christmas Prince 3)

Doug Targon

This… hasn’t aged well. She’s blatantly friendly to neonazi groups now girl. JKR is thre extremist here.

betp

says the video doesn't exist 😔

Dango

Links broken for me

-twinkle-

Not working :’(

Steph Joy

Copy and paste isn't working either. 😒

Ryan JF

Vimeo you have failed me for the last time

Kolla Matt

Nice, the link does not work for me but i can play on the patreon page :)

emergre

This does seem to work for me. Not sure why everyone else can’t see it

##I'MTOPOFTHELISTWHOO!

Yeah both the embed / link don’t appear to be working ATM. :c Will check back later! Good luck! 💚

L Stutt

Neither worked for me, sorry

Eric Rolfson

On iOS I couldn’t watch it in the Patreon app or copy and paste the link but I was able to load it on the Patreon website in Safari.

Pret M

Jasper’s link is working for me

Evan

guys add "ef" right to the end of the given link and it works

Allyson Laredo

Ugh. So sorry you have to deal with this insanity. Embed works for me!

Peachy Parfait

It plays fine on the patreon page for me! Using chrome.

Liz

It doesn't work :((

CJKArt

The video works for me by using the Patreon browser website instead of the app

Tbing34

Did you ever make that Snyder Cut video? I remember you talked about it like one time and saying that you might post it as a bonus video lol

Peach

It worked in Safari for me too

Joel Eblin

Embedded works, but not link. Jasper's link does

Evirenia

Embed works for me on mobile in the US!

IHateBerwald

Jenny a face when they did “flick and swish” needs to be a gif

Macy M

Neither of these links work for me but the one someone added in the comments did

bingo bango

thanks for finding a work around jenny, it must be a hassle to deal with

noname

I got the "this video does not exist" error at the vimeo link but not watching the embed in a desktop browser

Shiny Skunk

Embed works fine for me!

Max

They're praying on your downfall

Kim

the link doesn't work but i can still watch it on patreon

Luis

Embed works thanks!!

Trevor Atwood

Doesn't work for me on mobile, but DOES work on desktop.

Dango

Yep, Jasper's link works just fine

Emma

Oh my god I've seen this movie I totally forgot!

Sarahodo

If you download the Vimeo app, then click on the link, it might work. That's how I got it to work.

Liz

I've cracked the code!! You need to be logged in to vimeo to view it.

Shiny Skunk

The weird thing about this movie is just like... she had a pretty ordinary life by all accounts? So I guess they have to put all these stupid AND RON WEASLY WAS A /REAL DUDE/ things in it because like, what else is there to even talk about.

Dumb Fake Name

The movie is way louder than you Jenny, I wonder if that played any part in the copyright claim

Taylor Calloway

Yep, if you open it in the app it will work!!

Ford Prefect

I was able to watch it in Chrome just clicking on it.

MadMat

Works for me haha

EB

I remember this film used to be on Prime Video, my sister and I watched it multiple times when we were younger

Tony M Parker

Needed this. Coming home to new Jenny content is like a warm bubble bath after a hard day at work.

Wesley

Thank you for posting this! I feel bad that you had trouble posting, but I hope you know that it's really appreciated :)

Remington

Subscribing to your patreon was money well spent! I'm looking forward to watching this one :)

Babybel Cheese

the implications of this movie are hilarious😭 she didn’t have ONE original thought

Brian Cash

If I ever write a novel, I'll have to remember to only include references from my childhood.

emu

This video drinking game: drink every time jenny says some variation of “whimsical”

emu

everyone knows the first thing jo wrote abt hp was “little boy wizard who lives in a cupboard and the snake is a Korean lady”

Macy M

I personally want to see a lifetime movie of the life of JA Johnstone

Anna Glin

omg sorry but I hate when people talk over movie clips like I can't understand either the movie character or you in that case :(

Cathal

The embed works for me! Your commentary while the movie was playing was hard to hear but this was so funny, I can't believe how crass these cheapo biopic movies are. It really doesn't do its subject any favours by implying that JKR just like... saw in real life everything that was in the books and transposed it into the book with no creative transformation of any kind. People also don't talk about how good Rowling was at self-marketing - she took her rags-to-riches life and crafted a really media friendly narrative out of it, she knew how to sell herself and she was clearly very business savvy. Now that she's A Problematic Author she's lost control of her narrative somewhat, it's not really hurting her career though.

marioabbs

I watched this movie on tv ages ago and it felt like a fever dream

Thomas Hartwell

Have you ever seen "George Lucas in Love"? Really funny parody of this exact kind of biopic

Michael DeBellis

Also, there was some major problem with the Internet this morning. Apps like Facebook, WhatsApp and others were down and some are still down. I don't think people are certain what the problem is but it seems to be a problem with the DNS servers that route from a URL to an IP address so if there is a problem for some people it may be related to that.

Kyan Krumdieck

Embed didn't work but link did for me! Maybe the full watch along format is what triggered the take down? Or they have hair trigger take down on anything j k Rowling related to try and reduce the hate towards her? Lol

Emma L

I actually watched this movie back when it was first on Lifetime. Blast from the past!

Bryan Sutton

I want to see a movie about Jenny coming up with the ideas for movies about how creatives come up with ideas. "You can't just list ideas about how the Nostalgia Critic got started! No one will subscribe for that."

Jack Avalon

I Personally can't wait to see the film adaptation of the life of Addison Cain, where we see her become inspired to write her VERY ORIGINAL werewolf torture porn.

Steven Clark

I'd like to think that they called him "Postal Troll" as a reference because he looks so much like the goblins from Troll 2.

Ben Lyons

I also thought the mirror scene would just be her looking at her house & daughter lol. I like how the ghost mother was superimposed over the daughter though, almost completely obscuring her from view. Also I am from the UK and can confirm that all trains have trolleys with sweets being sold by lovely old ladies. And all of our schools look like that.

Erin Franklin

Neither embed or link worked on my phone but watching on desktop worked fine. A&E being awful about this did make me resent this terrible movie all the more though!

Ford Prefect

We get to see how JK Rowling got her initials

Stranger Kate

Just realized what I needed from 'I, Tonya' was a scene where baby Tonya whacks at another girl's knee with a stick

Janine

The absolutely unironic use of the phrase "welfare mother" in the postscript yikes

Abby Gebhard

Both are working for me on mobile! ❤️

Richard Reeves

I don't get how the green screen effects are so poor in those vehicle interior scenes. I can't tell if they were even trying to match up the lighting sources. I hardly ever watch cable TV. Is this normal SFX quality for TV movies? Have I been spoiled by recent streaming shows?

Eve

I’m lowkey sad they didn’t include Dobby in this. Fun fact: when I was a kid I had such a bad phobia of dobby I had to be sent to exposure therapy. They would print out little pics of him and make me look at them. Anyway, now I love him and I want him in this >:((

UK73

Works for me. 😋😋

Tim Bates

Best part of the movie for sure, but I am honestly amazed that one of the specific parts of the Harry Potter mythos this film chose to draw attention to was the Goblin bankers; a part of the franchise which, even a decade ago, was already being seen as problematic, and which has, since then, only grown more so. It'd be like if the movie showed Jo witnessing a parent cruelly enslaving their children, and been whimsically inspired to create House Elves. PS, as a Brit, I can confirm, this is 100% accurate, owls are everywhere.

The Tinkers!

So glad that you were able to find a way to post the ramble! I always like having the movie clips included but I think you needed to turn down the volume of the movie or just run the captions, it was hard to hear your commentary over the video. Thanks for covering this wild movie that I had no idea existed!

starrydewdrops

Woah I’ve actually seen this before!!! Absolutely wild, I completely forgot about it. Loved your commentary but if you ever do a similar format video I think it would be cool if you either paused the movie or lowered the volume when talking about it because it was kinda hard for me to process both sounds at once; I had to backtrack a lot. I hope I don’t sound to whiny, I really love all you do! :D

Charlie Kane Hutton

I'm getting flashbacks to seeing this on TV when it came out. Honestly, they were snubbed. Cyberbully stole that award!!

Totesnotasheep

Did anyone see "Cruella" because *SPOILERS* they did the name thing in there too! They did it twice in there and all I could think of was when they did it in "Solo." I can't wait till we have a movie that is just purely explaining names and how people got them for 2 hours.

Roman Àclef

Works! What a hassle. Thanks for fighting through the BS and coming up with a solution for us.

Marco's Translation Notes

Thanks for putting this on Vimeo so that we can see it earlier! I'd guess that Vimeo probably actually works for most people, but people are more likely to leave a comment if it doesn't work so that number seems inflated

Anisha-Cheyenne Rice

Vimeo is working now but the sound level of the movie is very overpowering and I can't really understand you 😔

Mariayuri Kumagae

This was a great one, I'd like to see more in this format please! Jenny makes the most pathetic of media so entertaining (also can't wait for the DEH video!)

shai

Idk why anyone watches movies like this for purposes other than comedy, like genuinely what is interesting to people about just watching a creator come up with their ideas when the execution of the ideas is the whole point. i also just think stories about writers are boring in general but like... especially real people writers whose work you could just read instead

edwardiansuggestions

The GENUINE shock and terror I felt as I realised I not only watched this film when it came out but LOVED it is sending me spiralling

Allyson Laredo

I also remember people telling a story of her writing the entire book on napkins because she 'couldn't afford paper'. I think it was just a weird rumor lol

NevadaNate

The link works for me. Others pointed this out already but the movie is louder than you

Cathal

Some writers had interesting lives but not necessarily the most famous ones you'd make a movie about (like Doris Lessing had an interesting life but no one would make a movie about her lol). Also the creative process is so hard to represent visually! So everything becomes painfully literal

Brandon Santoro

This monthly content is truly my favorite Patreon perk. Never heard of this and am so much better now that I know it exists. 😋❤️

Cathal

I think she jotted down the initial idea on a napkin and people just took that idea and ran with it lol - like where would she even get that many napkins to write a whole novel on it

Tori G

this is great! there were so many terrible/hilarious moments in that film.

Tori G

that line really threw me for a loop because i knew that public school doesn't mean the same thing in British English, and the British version doesn't make sense in context.

salem

the goblin reveal really made my day

Geoff Clarke

I was thinking this exact thing through the whole video.

Thanatoast

My favorite part of this movie is how it tries to convince you that J.K. had all seven books planned before even publishing the first one, but I guess they also didn't show a Korean lady with a tattoo of a snake or something who tells Joanne she's cursed to do her job forever or something. So y'know this biopic wasn't written with any input from her.

shai

right, but like the creative process itself is not the interesting part of their life either way though. Like if you're interested in them as a person outside of their writing that's one thing, but that's basically never the case for popular writers like JKR who are only interesting to the public because people like their books

Gussie Ruck

i think a gregory macquire bipoic would be excellent bc the whole book is just. what would the wizard of oz be like if they lived in a complex religious, social, and political landscape and everything was depressing. quirky moments could be depressing clips of world events interspersed with random wizard of oz references

Patrick Miller

It’s a bit difficult to hear you over the movie audio

Scott Carter

it is sad the populace won't see that part because it was very very funny to hear Jenny list those off

Dan Gibbins

Hoo boy they went hard into every biopic cliche, even "Don't you know that before Joanne attends a film premiere she has to remember her entire life?" But Jenny's reactions remained super fun. Sorry this one was so hard to get out. Maybe it's for the best you didn't save it for main channel if A&E are gonna be jerks about it.

JoshuaMartian

• I don't know if it was intentional but I loved seeing the origin of the chummy low-class accent she uses in her books, in the form of her kindly landlord. • I love the wonder in her friends voice when she's like "Wow, you've written seven books of an unpublished fantasy novel series?". In real life, she'd probably be trying to mask her pity and thinking "God, PLEASE don't ask me to read them" • Maybe they shouldn't have included her coming up with problematic banking goblins by suggesting that's how she sees actual bankers, as horrible mouth breathing sub-humans. • Gotta love the continuation of the 'creativity = looking at things' trend in biopics.

JoshuaMartian

A fun addendum to the Biopic drinking game is having your friends decide who would play you and what thing you would happen to look at that would inspire the direction your lifes work would take.

Jacob Nelson

the movie audio was a little too loud in comparison with your commentary. If you do this again have the video a little quieter so people can hear what you are saying

PamperYamper

thanks for the extra effort on this one!

carmen

ah i cant hear her at all >.< anyone else having this problem ?

Nirya Istari

Jenny's Suggestions for drinking games always sound really dangerous to ones health.

Laura McRaniels

"J.A. .....no..... J.B. .....not quite..... J.C. ...already taken....."

Calvin Maragnano

One of my favorite moments was when child JK loudly corrects Real Life McGonagall on how to say Rowling for the sake of the audience

Luis

Oh man Jenny's commentary was priceless and having Aragog there was great I wonder what he thought of the film 🤔 So I googled "postal troll" wondering if there was a mask but I only got troll dolls in mailman costumes :/

danieldotj

You take that back! Cyberbully is a masterpiece

S G Matthews

I think if this was written now, there'd be a scene where a nest of obnoxious birds were outside her window, and her sister or someone would say "oh, I can't stand those disgusting tweets!" And Joanne's eyes go wide. And the inspirational music starts.

Aramis Calcutt

Audio mix could use some adjustment. Much of the time Jenny’s wonderful commentary is drowned out by the audio from the film.

Joel Eblin

I needed the movie to have JK Rowling say to an Asian woman "Cho Chang, you're literally the only Asian I know. And I'm fine with that."

Dr sunshine

Right? Even doing just one of her suggestions is enough to make me pass out

AppleSnaps

I super appreciate the effort it took to get this online. I can even stream directly from my Apple TV or whatever. Seeing it on a big screen makes me feel like I too am in a room with a majestic spider and a scary blue slime.

Alex Kazakoff

This was filmed in BC! A lot of the actors are Canadian which is why some of the accents aren't great. The bookstore she has the event at near the end is Munro's Books in Victoria and I think when she's mocking Portuguese cheating guy's accent they're down Helmcken Alley in Bastion Square (which is apparently very haunted so.......spoooooooky). I didn't know this movie existed but it was fun to hear your commentary and a nice surprise to see some familiar landmarks too :)

Jackson Bockus

The first scene is his mother reading Wizard of Oz to him as a bedtime story and he starts asking pointed questions about why the wicked witch is evil and do the Munchkins believe in God and what is the nature of political power

Rae Abigail

Man I was really hoping we would finally find out what fat person did Joanne wrong

Kate Shep

Really enjoyed this format of video :) and excited for the Dear Evan Hansen takes

J

I would love another one of these, but please pause for commentary or bump your voice levels! It was hard to hear either you or the film 😌 Also I’m 90¾% that none of the W English characters were played by English actors. Those accents!! 👎🏻👎🏻

PogieJoe

Jenny always manages to track down the most obscure cringe. It's honestly a gift.

matt pierce

She did have the idea on a train, but didn't have anywhere to write it, so she just had to sit and think about it for the ride. But then she did do a lot of the writing in cafes

Jiminy’s Journal

So, was the case worker supposed to be Umbridge? Also, Sarah Dejardins, who played her sister as a teen in this movie, played Mrs. White's counterpart in a teen drama adaptation of Clue. I think the whole series is on YouTube.

Dash

WAAAA!…y

Shiny Skunk

And I guess that scene at the night club would've been inspired by him looking at weird furry porn.

Niamh (Best ham sandwich for miles around)

I know there's probably nothing you can do but omg vimeo is buffering like nobody's business. It will play about 12 seconds and then spinning wheel of doom shows up. I think I'm going to sue A&E because they simply have no right to keep me from this. No right!

Michael DeBellis

I think Public School in the UK means the opposite of in the US. They are boarding schools like Hogwarts (minus the magic). Although I don’t see why that would prevent her getting into Oxford. In any case I thought it was driven by scores on standard tests, I remember English friends telling me about the pressure on “A levels” which I think were the tests on graduating what we call high school.

Michael DeBellis

then again I wonder how much the writers understood the UK anyway, I agree those accents don’t sound authentic.

Michael DeBellis

I’ve got to stop commenting after every frame but had to say I took some long train rides in the UK in the 90’s and don’t remember any wooden trolleys of snacks.

pp247678

Yeah generally public schools are the 'posh' ones that charge fees to go to them, as opposed to state schools. Oxford is difficult to get in to, you have to do additional entry tests. It's been criticised in the past for only allowing in students from rich backgrounds, though they are trying to change that image (since university tuition fees in England are capped at £9250 per year currently for all universities, which you'd also get a student loan for which has pretty good repayment terms etc, so it's not only the rich that could afford Oxfords fees etc). High school in England finishes at 16 when you will do GCSE exams in around 8/9ish subjects and then college is generally from 16-18, where you'll either do one subject full time as a vocational qual (usually with fewer/no exams, more portfolio work etc) or A-levels, where you choose 3 (sometimes 4) subjects to do with exams at the end. Some universities (like Oxford) will only really take A-level students as an entry requirement, though most universities will take either A-levels or the equivalent level vocational qual. And that is your crash course on the English education system lol I work in a college myself and deal with university applications.

Madi

I need that Doug walker origin movie like I need air

Ink

I for one am disappointed that they excluded the horror thriller subplot where she discovers the danger of kids being transed

Garbaz

Watched in on tablet, in browser, embedded in Patreon and it worked great for me.

Nathan

"Is that canno- I mean, is that real life?"

Tom

Yes, Doug Walker biopic lol genius!!

Just Helen, but also, Indecision

So glad you finally got the horror movie reveiw channel started! 10/10 that depiction of ""Edinburgh"" as knock-off London was genuinely disturbing.

Clara Margot

I live in Edinburgh and the Edinburgh scenes are hilarious. (fun fact there are a lot of shitty Harry Potter tours in the city that like to make a big deal out of street names like Potter Row)

Myron

Love the video however the audio was quite the mental exercise this early in the morning.

Moose Knuckles

I was crying laughing at the Postal Troll!! I think this format is great

Francesco

It's a bit hard to hear you over the movie's audio but great video nonetheless

Sarah Crockett

It's great but I think there is a problem with sound levels, I can't hear you when you speak at same time as characters especially at 4:20 it's very hard to listen

Lunar-glitch

Joanne looking out the window at her screaming fans, suddenly frozen in terror as she seems to notice a slightly too prominent adam's apple on a woman and the whole movie happens in a terf rage fugue state

Emma Pridemore

I really want to watch this but the audio of the movie and your commentary playing at the same time/volume is killing me 😭

TalysAlankil

Movie: "She keeps writing to this day" Jenny: "SHE CERTAINLY DOES" thank you you killed me

Ramona Mantegani

Really hate that I bought a ticket to see Dear Evan Hansen after watching the ramble🙃

Luis

I paid $15 for a preview screening in anticipation of a video 😒

Robbie G

'You're such a weasel-ey guy' was a REAL stretch

Clouds in the Sky

Did anyone notice the easter egg in Dear Evan Hensen that shows Ready Player One was one of Connor's favorite books?

Reese

This format was a lot of fun!! Would definitely enjoy seeing other videos like this in the future. I remember seeing Alpha and Omega in theaters at like, 18 with my friend and we had a blast. It wasn't good, but we definitely enjoyed it anyway. I'm just shocked there's EIGHT of them now, and would also love a biopic of the brain those came out of.

Amaaa

Not to pile on with the audio, but this is difficult for viewers who are hearing impaired or have auditory sensitivity. Really like the movie commentary style though!

Steve Ray

The napkin cupboard.

M. K.

I notice there wasn't a scene where she was discussing the gayness of Dumbledore.

Cassidy Knight

So if it says “video doesn’t exist” through here, and the Vimeo link through the email notification doesn’t work, does that just mean I’m out of luck?

Kelly Stiver

It's been over a week Jenny, where is any commentary on MLP Gen 5???????

Bullseye

They actually did make a movie like this for Wizard of Oz. He looks at a pair of filing cabinets labeled "A-N" and "O-Z".

Luis

I hope the unauthorized Jenny biopic will be filled with random spider imagery

Arben

Boy Dudley

Derick Gadd

Nice October look, Jenny! :)

Derick Gadd

I think that's actually where he got the name for Oz in real life though?

Pterranodon

This just further proves my theory that The Greatest Showman is just a high-budget Lifetime biopic

Pterranodon

"I will be pausing the video for commentary" *Commentary constantly drowned out by the documentary, pausing only for the tail-end of every other scene* Jenny, I love your rambles, but pls

Pterranodon

*Korean woman with an Indian name seduces her husband away* "God, that woman is an absolute snake!" Rowling Kowling's eyes grow wide, "Get me a napkin!"

Pterranodon

*Jo walks around a museum showcasing the horrors of slavery* "Hm, what if... they actually LIKED it?"

AHHHscreamapillar

Oh I could barely look at the screen for parts of this. The cringe! 😹😆

Emilio Bustamante

Dissapointed they didnt show the scene where she killed her editor and stuffed his body in the trunk of a car, which she then drove into the bottom of a lake - granted that was after publishing book four

Emilio Bustamante

That or her traumatic horse bitting inccident which made her obbsessed with "Horse Faced" Aunt Petunia

Emilio Bustamante

But in the movie theyre in a post office, and called them "postal troll". Which honestky would have been a lot better if that was what she has writen in the book

resnet

only watching this film it it shows us the true ending of her character arc: i.e. her turning into a rabid transphobe and is shunned by society

Tasha

We have snack trolleys on trains but they aren't wooden and don't have giant lollipops, more like crisps and mars bars and bad sandwiches.

Dr sunshine

Great video. It sucks that your transformative work is in a dispute. Thanks for putting up with all this annoying stuff in addition to being so creative.

E.K. Young

Wait what was that line about KA Applegate cheating with the husband? If a joke, what do Applegate and Rowling have to do with each other? I live under a rock so I have no idea. Also I didn't read Animorphs and know her for other work so maybe it would make more sense if I had 😬

Garga Lenoir

Journalist : So where did you get your inspiration? JK : Honestly nowhere, the universe just kind of spoon fed me every lines...

Galewolf

Jenny did a podcast on Cruella - it's an episode of the show "Sardonicast"

Bernard Mason

The dialogue makes me want to block my ears with lava. I felt myself physically cringing at some of the lines and terrible british accents. Great Ramble Jenny!

Sarah B

I overall enjoyed but it was really hard to hear you over the audio from the biopic as you didn't pause most times

RowanCrimes

Cast Jenny as the lead in the Addison Cain lifetime movie

Nikchemnyk

Jenny easily guessing Canadian TV movies awards is so on-brand.

Nikchemnyk

Hahah. In JKR's On Writing book she'll reveal she set herself a standard of 50 napkins a day back in the day.

Silvoid

Can't believe they cut the scene where Jo was *magically inspired* to be a terf

Space_Husky

Good Ramble! Also, the format was fun and seemed easier to edit so I am in favor of this for future content!

Tina Grapegrape

I saw this when it came out and Oh Boy even at my most "Joanne can Do No Wrong" phase this was so cringe

Stephen Gillie

"The universe spoon-feeds them the book." The specific details of Rowling's life are "mad-libbed" into this story framework, for the most part. So it's "about" her. This story-frame is like candy to people who want Rowling's level of fame. They see it as a checklist. This isn't supposed to accurately depcit the author's life as much as sell an Author's Dream to naive literaries. And the "ironic in hindsight" moments are in support of this - when other people check our logic and plans, this frames them as "ironic in hindsight" mini-villains to overcome or surpass in this authorial hero's journey. They're not giving a reality check against our naive worldview - instead, they're the naive ones, questioning the wisdom of the Great Author. It's almost Ayn Randian in its expectation for everyone to bow before the Author/Architect. Mental illness is a hell of a drug.

Neil Dutton

I've decided that the post office guy brought the 'troll' costume from home and they just didn't notice until editing.

Neil Dutton

First husband should just have fully been noseless voldemort.

Poshpot

Love the watch along format of a good bad movie

Jessie

i remember watching this like ten years ago when i was like 12 and all i remember is that i thought it was questionable even at the time and that it was super difficult to find anywhere

Cynethryth

"It's more watchable than Solo, that's for sure." I am slain

Brian L Hughes

sorting hat vibes when the teacher was assigning seats

Practically Imperfect Comics

I'm surprised they just didn't show her sitting and reading Niel Gaimans "Books of Magic" in 1993.

lain harley

i looked it up and her and her dad are not on speaking terms so you kinda called it

AW

Okay this is a tiny stupid nitpick, but I'm curious if this movie was written by North Americans, because of the thing with the "because you went to a public school" scene about her not getting accepted into Oxford(?) Don't Brits call their private schools that you have to pay tuition for "public schools" and their public schools that are funded by taxes and are free "state schools" and so going to a public school in the UK wouldn't be a signal of being lower class..?

Dhonaill O Apostrophe Shea

Haha I went to University in Edinburgh and Potter Row is the student accomodation. It's basically a college dorm complex

Natalie Arnold

I was wondering that too - it seems wrong on multiple levels

Sophia

Wait I'm kind of new to jenny's patreon. What happened to her Barbie video? Is the project on hold?

run_away

I think Barbie is on hold until Evermore is out, Beanie Babies is shelved for a while until she can figure out in what direction she wants to take the video, and sounds like Evermore is delayed for a bit until Evan Hansen, which sounds like a less production-intensive video. Could be wrong on those though, my memory isn't the best. Could be that Barbie was shelved due to copyright fears, though I don't think so.

Sophia

Amazing thank you!

A live watch-along with droll commentary? Too bad BB-8 couldn't have chimed in!

Sophie Cleverly

This was hilarious - particularly because I'm a children's author and I kept imagining how bizarre it would be if someone made a movie like this about me. Like there are lots of random references to real things in my books, but someone trying to guess which ones would never get it right. However I did genuinely have one of those moments where a teacher said I was rubbish at writing, so I'm sure any future Lifetime movie directors will be pleased with that... Also was absolutely not expecting the guest appearance from my 2010s owl necklace lol

Ginny Mabrey

Omg I can’t wait to hear her thoughts

I feel real silly. This is my second watch through and only now realized the sister is the sister and not her editor. Like, through it all I was imagining the sister as a ridiculously committed editor working for little to no pay.

Liv

This strongly reminds me of the Greatest Showman and I don't know how to feel about it.

Hey, so we actually have three kinds of schools: public, private (paid for) and grammar (free but you have to pass a test at age 11 to get in. It’s sort of like a private school that is free)

Matthew Finbow

Right, but I think the original commenters query is about the terminology in this movie being incorrect - In the UK we have state-run schools, which are either "comp" schools (short for "comprehensive") which are non-selective, or "grammar" schools, which are selective based on academic achievement. Neither of these types of schools charge parents fees. Then we have private schools which we call "public schools", which DO charge parents fees, and are generally where the wealthy send their kids, and also give students a leg up when applying to more prestigious universities. I think the point is - No-one in the UK would ever call a state-run school (be it comp of grammar) a "public school".

When I was younger I was so inspired by JKR because of where she came from and I always wanted to be a writer, and honestly it felt like such a betrayal for her to be a TERF. I'd like to see a sequel to this called the Radicalization of JK Rowling in which it's explained how she was sucked in by the transphobic movement to become who she is.

Filemon Tursas

no offense but it's kinda hard to make out what you're saying because the film audio is so loud

Clarissa Lys

it really is a shame that jkr went off the deep end, it's truly awful for someone to use a platform of her size for harm like that

Fiona Gray

This is so funny. I go to uni in Edinburgh, where she wrote the books and after you walk around for a while you realize that it was all just inspired by actual things and history in the city. Examples: one of the student union buildings is called Potterow (someone just graffitied over it and it says 'otterow' right now - which I love). Also, there's a castle on a rocky hill in the center of the city, the same way Hogwarts looks in the movie - that is visible from the cafe she wrote in. I used to work as a ghost tour guide and told historical stories about witches and showed tourists around the graveyard that has a bunch of names Rowling copied. With this film showing her walking around and getting inspiration - if they filmed it in Edinburgh, it might have been accurate!

AW

@Laura and Matthew (sorry, I don't think there's a way for me to directly respond) - thank you both for answering and correcting my terminology! I didn't know anything about grammar vs comp schools, I'm glad to learn more about y'all's schooling system (:

UK73

This is a cut down version, right ?!

l

is there any way to re-do the sound mixing? cuz i really want to watch this video but i literally cant do it

EmilyPathh

tragically, i have seen this movie, years and years ago

Matthew Driver

You sound like the radical extremist tbh. What has she even said thats 'radical'

Matthew Driver

by society you mean a minority of extremists

Michael Bennett

jk rowling cast a spell to make this unlistenable

Norbert

This video is iconic

Sal

I love how the dream sequences need to spell out the story for her.

Penguin Gabe

This was a nightmare to listen to, I really wish you had paused more because you talking at the same time with the movie just turns into unbearable overlapping noise, jiminy christmas my head hurts after like five minutes

em

I just noticed... The book that 'Joanne' is holding when she first gets the book in the mail is definitely not the edition of the book she would have received. Rather than the long-bearded Dumbledore featured on the back of the book, at first it had a young short-bearded brunette wizard guy on the back. Not nitpicky at all, right~? (And of course the next shot shows that very information in a 'goofs' bit. Whoops!)

Gemma

I'm crying because as a kid I also thought that JK Rowling wrote her first book on napkins because she couldn't afford paper

Orlando Correa

@Narcissa The YouTuber Shaun (has a sunglasses skull icon) has a couple great videos detailing JKR’s connection with hate groups and regressive politicians!
